Mostly of interest to those who do woodworking, but maybe some will find this collection from one estate sale interesting.

First, from a person who had four saw vises and two saw sets, there were 8 nice handsaws, from which I chose the best 5 - New 16, D 115, D 8 Thumbhole rip, and 2 D23's (pre 1928). All sharp, all straight, no broken horns, only one medallion in poor shape, all just need a minor cleaning.

Nice Disston's. I'm checking out 3 stops in the morning then I'm heading up north to my Mom's. Going to pick up a bunch of stuff from my Grandfather's garage now that I have my own shop down here, and that includes a Disston or two. Probably the tools I have the earliest memory of for some reason or another.

This mornings finds. I broke the bank and spent more than I wanted. Total spent today = $9.

Brink & Cotton 6" clamp. Made in Connecticut. $2
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1438392095.213250.jpg

1950s bathroom scale. It says better homes but I believe it to me made by Borg. $1
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1438392336.559885.jpg

Steelmaster parts cabinet. $5
19"w X 11.25"h X 16"d
Missing one label holder badge thing. I might sell it if I can't find a good place for it. Couldn't say no for the price.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1438392551.696740.jpg

Brand new Genie garage door opener remote and keyless pin pad. $1
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1438392659.143742.jpg

PLUMB USA hatchet hammer head. I was going to originally pay $1 but the guy said free if I buy the parts cabinet.

There was an old looking axe I saw while walking to my car but I kept going. I should have looked at it.

Picked up a cement mixer for $25 for a couple of retaining wall projects. Now just have to figure out how to get it down the side of the house. (to the left of the mixer in the pic). Going to have to take the axle/wheels and hitch off, turn it sideways and mount it on a couple of moving dollies and make a plank road to roll it down.

That is an awesome find and I wish I could find something like that. Been looking for awhile and may end up getting the HF version to get some concrete projects in before winter.

I don't usually collect stuff like this, but this Greenfield Tap and Die "Little Giant" Set No. 70 was just too good to pass up earlier this morning.

I've seen smaller sets on fleaBay and pieces of sets here and there at estate sales or flea markets, including right here in this Garage Sale thread from time to time, but I've never seen a complete set in the wooden case with these sizes taps, dies, and handles, and I've never seen a double deep case with a removable drawer like this. (You stick your index fingers and thumbs through the holes on either side and lift to remove.) The case is 2-1/2 feet wide. Looks like everything is here except one die. I'll do a better inventory once I clean it up. The label is in poor shape, but readable with care.

If anyone here is a GTD expert or has any old catalogs, please let me know. I'd love to know more about this, starting with vintage (looks 1940's to me).

Husky 11 piece 1/2 drive 12 point deep well set 3/8 to 1 inch. With a 3 piece pittsburg extensions set, a pittsburg extending ratchet. And a standard lenght jobsmart ratchet in a nylon dewalt bag for $25. I need a set of 1/2 for the car so this should work well.

Had 3 targets this morning. First one produced the stuff below for 10$

Eclipse Ratcheting screwdriver, Made in England
Snap-On SP266 USA
Craftsman Philips #1 Canada
Craftsman Robertson #2 Canada
Proto Philips #2 Canada

4 Challenger Canada 3/8 sockets (7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8)
Craftsman USA 9/16 combo
Snap-On 1/2 Combo

The guy had some other stuff I was interested in, including 3 carry boxes and 1 top chest in the garage I didn't ask about because I was waiting for my 2nd stop. He said he'd likely be having another sale in 2-3 weeks time.

I get to the second stop, they had a 3-piece Mastercraft stack in the online listing, basically junk but I figured if I could get it for a decent price it would tide me over until I could get something better. Get there and there's not a hint of a tool in sight. Turns out the sale that was advertised was the neighbours house and there's no one there, was advertised for 7:30 and it was 9 by then. :dunno::mad:

Third stop, advertised lots of tools. Get there and there's a Black & Decker 6 volt cordless from the 90's and a MasterCraft 12 volt from the same period. No thanks.

Now I'm off to the dump before it closes and driving up north to raid my Mom's garage of my Grandfather's stuff.

A quick stop this morning at one of my regulars yielded this:

KD 3-piece hone set, Snap-on vacuum pump that had most of a Mityvac stuffed into the case, couple of Snap-on sockets, Snap-on battery service set in roll, couple of Mac gauges, Mac battery side terminal tool and hose clamp pliers, and an IR die grinder and Mac cut-off tool. Totaled $21.

Not a stellar day, but got a few things I've been wanting for a while:

10 stops planne all claiming "tools" but the dog days of summer are upon us it seems many didn't have more than what Tim mentioned. bits of junk

One stop was the HS Flea a few things came from there. First up for anything was a Freecycle PU for some wooden coat hangers. Only three fit that category the rest (most) were slack clamps and the like. (no pic)

Second was this Segal Key duplicator and 8 On-Off-On switches. 126V 6A - $15 all. (He started at $20 for the cutter alone)

attachment.php

Then I got the Vise Grips, thread snips tiny (Solengen Germany) scissors for $5

The Flea market got me these wavy edge Fiskars for a buck; the Plvmb, Indestro & P&C sockets for a buck each from another guy, and that old clamp with the cool thumb screw for a buck from yet a third seller

attachment.php

I've been looking for a key duplicators since forever, and decent set of tread snips even longer...

The last piece is a piece of history, an needs its own post (pic count)

I'm late in taking pics and posting this stuff but this is from an auction last week locally. I've not been to many Garage Sales lately just because of lack of time but am enjoying the ease of being selective at auctions selling tool, etc online with local pickup.

A box of 2" new casters.
Casters.jpg

A No. 11 Cole Swivel Vise. Just needs cleaning and jaw inserts.
Cole Vise 1.jpg

2 brand new fire hose holders which will also work great for other storage in the shop.
Fire Hose Holders.jpg

A 1/4 inch number punch set. Looks new or very close.
Number Set.jpg

Three pick axe heads and one axe head all needing handles but for $5 I couldn't resist.
Pick Axe.jpg

Three brand new 8" valve shut off wheels. Not sure what I do with them yet but some artsy project will surely reveal itself.

and the piece of history: political history, but it's more than 50 years old so not likely to get me in trouble for "politics"

They could pack a lot of political information onto a 3 foot piece of wood couldn't they!

THE REST OF THE STORY

Second day of an estate sale.

Another saw vise

A Model T tire changing tool - hasn't been used in a while.

A Stanley 358 Miter Box - pretty good condition - the wood insert is original - light cleaning and she'll be ready to go.

Finally - a VISE!

A quick detour on the way home after picking up a couple breakfast biscuits found these, picked from a small tub that was offered at $5. Eight Snap On 3/8" drive sockets, 1984 dates mostly, beginning to show their 30+ years in Louisiana where I am visiting. fae097c6173f3dbe0cc80081ab9409fe.jpg
Got them for $2 including three Craftsman and a no name 10mm.

Craigslist... Including the free stuff. Saw this one in one of the pics for a garage sale and was the first one there on the Sat. morning.

Missed out on a free one a few days earlier.

You can have this one when I'm done...:D

Outlaw...that key machine is beautiful!! I know you have more machines than I do lol

I went to one estate sale today and it turned out pretty well. The guy was a commercial printer with a lot of hobbies - the house was full of books, photography equipment, and a decent amount of tools.
Here is what I got for 29 bucks:

Craftsman toolbox, bunch of locks and misc parts, Ridgid pipe wrench and cutter, Vise-Grip 10R, Craftsman and "Industronic" punches, Channellock long nose, Ace tap handle, Craftsman awl, unbranded 'made in USA' slip joint pliers

Earlier in the day I was helping my buddy clean the shop at his work and got 4 boxes of keyblanks and a busted pair of long nose pliers for my collection of wall art which goes with the melted Craftsman awl!

Lots of great finds shown this week from the other GJ buyers!!!

Went to an estate sale of a local meat butcher and purchased the following items.

5 meat cleavers and various maker marks, but surprise was one was Craftsman (pic 1)

3 knives and again various makers, with one needing a new handle put on, which is the F. **** of Germany (pic 2)

2 meat hooks and a small 24 lb scale by Foster (pic 3)

Lastly, an older Hollymatic Model 54 Steak and Paddy molding machine. At this point not sure I have everything, but do know that the motor and step motor does run. pics 4-6

Never know what you will run into when you are out there looking.

Mike

Continued:

Did pick up some tools today as well.

One of the pipe wrenches in pic 1 is made by Walworth and is a Walco 24. It is also marked B&O Rail Road. Nice surprise when discovered that info.

Pic 2 has couple of hand saws, a Channelock 420, Watt-A-Driver kit, and an SK 24 piece tool set No. 4224

Pic 3 has couple of wooden twist clamps, another rail to pound on, a hay cutter and a wooden and metal Stanley Liberty Bell No. 132 but missing front knob and also a brass tip to the back handle.

Pic 4 has a small bench vise which is an Ace and No. 3-1/2

Pic 5 isn't a tool, but a Holophane Glass Lamp Shade approx 19 inches tall by 8 inches diameter at the bottom opening base.

Pic 6 is light related as well, a pair of old metal 12 inch wide lamp shades

Pic 7 is nuts/bolts, but what caught my eye was the nuts with the red shades. Fellow thought they came from a dismantled bowling alley in our area.

TP, a Unimat like that was my very first lathe. after I for the big one it was given to my best bud's dad, as an Xmas present from both of us. (My bud paid me half of what I bought it for) nifty little lathe, I wouldn't mind having another again for those bitty fussy hand jobs.

Maybe someone here can school me on estate and auctions. I drove a estate sale today and did not stop because I thought you may have to already register. Is stuff like that you can just show up for or what and if you do have to register how in the world do you find out about the stuff. Flea Markets here are over priced most of the time and I even went to a yard sale today that said it was a MEGA SALE and the first thing in the listing was tools and I showed up and all he had was a broken hammer. It was no MEGA anything about anything. Thanks for any pointers you can give.

Most Estate sales are simply house/garage wide yard sales. Some, on the first AM, will have a sign up sheet and limit how many are in the house at one time (or things get broken and stolen in a tight crowd).

Auctions will have rules, and require you to sign in and possibly get assigned a bidders number.

Most household estate sales are just walk up affairs and no pre-registration is required. Yes at some you may have to wait in line or take a number and they call blocks of people at a time to limit the number in the house and avoid damage. But I think that typically happens early at the beginning of the first day and with some ES organizers that have a large following.
Some easy ways to find out about sales in your area are CL ads, and one of the best is to go to estatesales.net and sign up for email notices in your area. You'll get daily emails listing new and upcoming sales with pictures of some items usually included.

Shop Victoriously!!!:rocker:

My only sale action this weekend was a visit to an antique mall in Carlisle, PA. Well, actually, a second visit, because the guy who owned the stuff wasn't around to talk prices the first time.

I really like the lines on this old Wilton vise. It's not a bullet, but still nice. It's missing the retaining ring in the screw for the jaw, but that's what got the price down to $35. I'll clean it up and put it on one of my benches - this ones a keeper!

BB, there are a couple in the big vise thread that are two-toned and really sharp looking, if you haven't seen them, do a search in the thread for them.

Hey all! Haven't posted here in a bit, keeping up with this thread can lead a guy into unhealthy financial choices sometimes!:lol_hitti I have been searching for a small brake for what seems like forever, the ones I've seen are either garbage or too expensive! This was a CL score, made the trip out to pick it up this morning! 24" finger brake complete appears to have seen minimal use in its life. I paid the man his asking price of $175 for the brake, and then he asks me if I have a use for this? I can just have it! Score! Famco 3R 4ton arbor press :rocker:

2 sales from yesterday. Both items were something I actually NEEDED. :lol_hitti

New 250 ft roll of 14-2 wire. 20 dollars. About half off retail after taxes.

My real score...String trimmer with edger attachment. Thing was covered with dust and cobwebs. Lady was kind of hesitant when I asked when it last ran. She thought maybe a year ago. She offered it for $17, I said I'd take a chance at $15, thinking it was probably gonna be a basket case.

Brought it home, wiped it down, dumped the old gas, refilled and primed. Started on the 3rd pull. Runs great.
