I hit an auction on Friday with my Dad and FIL. It was freakin hot and stuff went cheap. Picked up a few items on the cheap. My fav was these OTC wheel bearing sockets, 19 of them all different sizes, only a few look like they have been used. 9$ for the set

Man, you guys are cleaning house, even some of those that said it sucked... (The bad way...)

Today was an anomaly for me as we took a drive to go Yard/estate/barn sailing, and some antiquing.

I spent .75c on stuff directly for me... :p .50c on an USB powered 3 LED light, (map light off the Stereo USB? :dunno: ) and .25c for an old building mounted wood insulator post - The glass screw on green Hemmingray type insulators. (I'd love to find the die to cut those from fresh wood, I have quite a few and would prefer to "mount" them... )

SWMBO spent well over $100 today, so I can't say it was a bust. Heck $95 was at one estate sale! (Old Victorian, VERY cool place...) I had hopes for the barn sale, but it was mostly **** and not "barn" stuff... My daughter and SWMBO spent $10.

Maybe I can do better locally tomorrow...

Here's the flea market haul for Saturday. All USA made. $10 for all these goodies...

pic 1:
Pair of large Craftsman screwdrivers, one flat and one Phillips
K-D reaming tool of some sort
pair of Ridgid 8-inch pipe wrenches in good shape
6 sockets, from Thorsen, Proto, Westcraft and Crescent
oil can with spout
Dunlap 6-inch metal rule

pic 2:
Armstrong 4-inch C-clamp, some bubba welded on some curved "C" pieces to clamp onto pipe or something round. Couple minutes with a die grinder with a cutoff disc and I think it'll be put back to original configuration

pic 3:
brick hammer, by Plumb, good shape but needs a new handle

also a tapered hammer marked "Bell System". Never seen this type before last week, and now two weekends in a row I saved 2 of them. Amazing.

that snap on box will bring 30+ on ebay if your intent is to flip.

stage20, Thanks for the heads up. People are crazy for the Snap-On boxes it seems

That craftsman tool box is badass! And that Schauer charger is cool looking too! Good stuff. : thumbup:

That Craftsman box is Bad *** and big bucks too.

bagged89s10 & jwsia, Thanks for the comments, I have never seen a Craftsman box like that in the wild so picked it up because it looked pretty unique. Got it at one of those estate sales where you need to make at least 3 rounds around because of so much stuff all over and it was the 2nd day even. The square topped ones seem to be way more common. It needs a lot of cleaning. The Schauer charger picked up since I picture it as a man cave piece.

I have a similiar scraper but never knew what it was. What is such a scraper used for?

mach158, Wood scraper, I believe it is an old version of this

I have the same exact one except it is 110V. I got it from my F-I-L. He had it for years, got it new. I can't remember what the date was on the tag that was on it. I am thinking 1947, but don't quote on that. We use it for seeing if any bears are having a turn at the apple tree this time of year at night!!!

you need to rub that out with rubbing compound first and possibly a clay bar. Once it has the oxidation layer off, see where you are, and if its looking good enough, then wax.

I went to several garage/yard sales yesterday. I had to. I was so ordered by SWMBO. It went kind of like, me: I gotta go do this service call - sorry it's Saturday. She: (arms crossed, toe tapping) Sure, and I bet you'll hit some garage sales 'on the way'. Me: Ummm well.... She: OK, there's something I need. Keep your eyes open for me.:rocker:

So I hit a few and came up with some nice things. Two of the Vise-Grips are the real deal; the longnose is Mastercraft (Taiwan) but looks well made. All are rusty, but jaws in great shape and fully functional. I like BernzOmatic, so couldn't pass up the DOE even though I already had one. The Stanley razor knives were a steal at a buck apiece - I hate the jelly bean colored ones.

And the block grinder was also a good deal at $10, even missing the end caps, eye shields and quench tray. The lamp shade is plastic, but appears to be original. I guess the more recent the grinder, the more plastic in it.

The total tab: $26

And best of all, I couldn't find what SWMBO wants, so I have to try again tomorrow:D

I bought this today from my neighbor for $35. It will replace my inadequate HF air compressor. Hopefully I will be able to sell my HF for a decent amount.

That looks almost like a railroad stub punch that part of the long cylindrical end has been cut off of. The proportions look pretty close.

Rec'd a call on old tools, found when cleaning out an estate.

Bought these tools and after cleaning them up, found two on left in Pic 1 were Simonds, next Disston and last was a Johnson. All had SKROO-Zon handles. However biggest surprise was after cleaning up hacksaw with a Brazilian blade, found hacksaw was marked L.S. Starrett and No. 144.

Pic 2 & 3 is a clamp on vise. Jaws around 2-7/8 inches, max opening 2-1/2 inches, Depth to screw 1-1/2 inches and max table top to allow clamping around 1-1/2 inches. It also could be bolted to a table rather than clamped. There appears to have been stickers to identify maker on both sides, but stickers have been gone for long time. If anyone knows maker, would love to know who it was.

Pics 4-7 is an update on finally installing ice and doing a field test on the restored Oak Ice Box in operation.

Temperature inside garage on 9/6/2015 around 11:45 a.m. was near 90 degrees. (pic 4)

Pulled out a block of ice from chest freezer and found out after taking container off, that the ice still had unfrozen sections. Decided to split the ice and pour off the water and put the remaining two pieces of the frozen block into the oak ice box. (pic 5)

Four hours later, wife displayed the ice in the box still remaining. (pic 6)

The thermometer which we had placed on the upper wire shelf on the food storage side of the oak ice box (left side) recorded the inside temperature at 43 degrees. (pic 7)

Did run test for almost 24 hours and temps held around 43 degree temperature and looks like ice would have been plentiful to run for 3 days before needing another load.

Mike, Cool test of the ice box!

Those dual steel dowel clamp-on vises were made/sold by many, if not most of the vise companies, so really hard to say a maker with certainty. The only one I have with a makers mark is a Millers Falls. The main difference seems to be size and the main screw retainer; a set screw like yours, or a C-clip of some sort.

As Outlaw said, it's a pretty common style. The raised diamondish boss around the leadscrew is distinctive, though. I've seen Yost and Wilton vises with that detail.

Most definitely!

I like that size box, it's a good size for a set of tools for on the road. Its only issue is being metal its prone to rust...

I broke the tool drought today, and I wasn't even officially yard sailing. a drive by on a trip to the store.

An old DOE with metric and SAE markings: 8/10 mm, and 5/16-13/32, and a Cornwell 3/8 Flare wrench. std open on the off end. A buck for both.

Thanks guys, the box looks bad but I had the drawers out and there was a little rust below but nod bad. I have to say it is solid as a rock only a few minor dings. Anyone know were I can get gray wrinkle paint to refinish it? Also when I had the drawers out I noticed a small stamp that read: 1-63, is that a date? Thanks

I'd say it was Jan, 1963.

Wrinkle is hard to come by, most of those boxes were Hammertone and everyone sells that. (yours looks like Hammrtone)

My finds: a set of mikes, calipers and a baby Wilton bullet vise (my first Wilton piece) all for $40. There is more there, but I was limited in the time I could spend searching.

And a post clean up update with a better pic... The vise is a Wilton 3" 9300 dated 1/76. The calipers ( 1"-2" x 2, 2 -3", 3"-4"), are Starrett except for the right hand one in the pic which is English. One of the vise faces had a headless screw. Anyone know where to get a replacement?

I have a big 5" Chinese vise and wanted a smaller one for a different bench and this Wilton fits the bill. There was also a 4" Athol and a very rusty, but beefier (3-1/2"?) Wilton that I may go back for...

Thanks for the leads on who might be the maker of the clamp vise!!!!

Been a little slow lately round my way, but finally got a chance to get to a town wide garage sale that coincides with a yearly street festival. Literally hundreds of garage sales - showed up at noon, and only managed about a half dozen sales before I had to head to the street fair with the family-
Grand total was $17

CTyankee,

Good eyes, it looks like a portion of the latch may have been replaced at one time.

That light is definitely retro man cave material. Nice score !

Hello All. Been a while since I've been able to visit. Lots to catch up on!

Went to a sale outside of my usual zone and it was well worth while. They just opened and there were six or seven guys NOT looking at the tools, the main thing at the sale. So while they were checking out house wares I bee-lined for the $5.00 Gerstner. Bonus items included the wood boxed Lufkin depth gauge, misc tool bits, dial indicator and scribe rods, and one of the missing latches off the box. It might be ugly on the outside and missing the mirror, but the drawers were lined with cardboard. The felt is in great condition. My first Gerstner.

Next stop was the table of micrometers and dial indicators. This was the $3 & $5 table. Avoided the China stuff and scooped up all of the US & JP. After their weird and generous math it added another $40.00 to my bill. Found the papers and test blocks hidden in the Starrett boxes while taking these pictures!

Got the dies for another $5.00. The blocks and bars also came in the tool box.

The ultrasonic cleaner was $5.00. Same as the small track anvil, $5.00. The larger track anvil came from a sale about a month ago along with the tool box they are sitting on. Paid $3 for the anvil and $20 on the box. Not sure who made the box.

There was so much stuff there in the $5 range. Problem is that I ran out of cash.

Still, a good weekend all round!

There was so much stuff there in the $5 range. Problem is that I ran out of cash.

Still, a good weekend all round!

That tool box could be a beech box handles look like a beech. Not sure on the spelling of beech.

Nice haul Mr. SackOmeasuring tools. I'll go out on a limb and say that I see a fair amount of suckage there... Here I was being pretty proud of my measely four rusty micrometers for $20...
