And another tape measure, because despite buying at least a half dozen at estate sales over the last six months, I still find myself looking around my garage in the middle of a project saying "Where the h-double-hockey-sticks is a g-d tape measure!?!?"

Yup, can NOT have too many tape measures! I think I have the problem under control with 10 tapes mounted in baskets right near the workbench. If one (or two, or three, or even five) tapes get misplaced around the garage, I still know where to go to instantly get another one...:D

Went to the local flea market today and was shocked at how deserted it was. Last time I went it was packed with 100+ sellers and lots of customers. Today there weren't even 20 sellers. Place looked like a ghost town!

One guy was selling tools and I picked up a few things. $5 for the Craftsman 1/2" ratchet and $10 for the Snap-On 1/2" breaker bar, dividers, Craftsman stubby ratchet and 4" vise grips.

After deciding not to go to any garage sales, I stopped at a junk store instead. [emoji15]
First pick was a crappy machinist chest with random junk in it and no front. But I have a use for it. Closely followed by a Mac tools double flaring set. $7 & $5 respectively. Then on the way out I saw a set of card file drawers. $25. What about the shelves they are sitting on? Another $5. At least it all fitted in the shop and didn't take any extra space due to re-organization. Oh and the file card drawers had a bunch of good actual files in them along with a 15" Rigid pipe wrench. [emoji106] Here are a few pictures.

d7068988109700884abb02ac0b1098eb.jpgdbadca48156e4439eecf0ecf72e99897.jpgafffc87f874aa2869adf85825ccda869.jpg66617476c585bbaf4a0aa31ebd93b260.jpg

The shelves are about 36x36x18 and the card file just about fits the top.

Craptain, I like the pulls on the card file, looks like stainless.

Anyway I pulled out some of the better finds from the flea market guys.

Snap On Blue mini screwdriver/pick set -$25

DSC07953_zpsdbnw2nrb.jpg

Here, let me stick my finger in my eye and twist it around a few times.

3bay, Last evening I was thinking about heading to Clarence this morning but the weather put me off it. I've got a normal set of those Snap On blue hard handles and would have had to buy that set on principle - assuming I found them before you. :D

Nice haul.

Thanks, I got this at the tractor & steam show in Alexander. Most people were too busy eating popcorn and diving through cast iron pans. :D I go for the tools.

Good strategy - I like it! Central storage rather than scattered around the place.

No GS time this weekend but I went to the first of the season live antique auction last night and came home with this tray of wood planes. 8 different planes and a couple extra blades.

I think a couple of them will eventually end up at the drill press and grinding table.

BTW the freebie black/red 25' HF tapes are pretty much ****.
Dollar Tree has some black and yellow tapes that work pretty well at a buck each.

This mornings planned stops were a bust but the unplanned stops yielded some finds.

Anyone recognize this anvil? The seller claimed he bought it used 25 years ago. Rebound is really good (est 75-80%) and it's not a cast iron Vulcan. It weighs 70 lbs and he was firm at $50:

At $3.00+ a pound for anvils around me that is a "YOU ****" price!

OK, here's why I paid a Hamilton for the above. After being disappointed in the garage, I decided to check out the house with the expectation that I'd be disappointed in the basement. Not so. After wandering around dodging the crowd, and finding nothing, I took a look at a pile of books that I had passed several times. No-one was even looking at this pile of books on some kind of stand. Which makes sense, it was all junk.

And then ..................... I took a look at the "stand" that the books were hiding ...........................................

Ooops, gotta go, time to eat dinner. More latter.

Right, so here's the rest of the story ...............

Hiding underneath the books, in plain sight, was a safe. A MOSLER safe ! :bounce:
FOR ONLY $65 !!!!!!!!!!!! :yikes: :willy_nil

:3gears: I immediately slapped a sold sticker with my name on it over the tag and RAN up the stairs to throw some cash at the poor girl behind a cardtable. :3gears:

I had some help getting it out of the house, but ended up unloading it and getting it into my house by myself. Not a pretty sight.

I've been looking for one of these for 6 years but the lowest I've seen them go for is $250. I really wanted one of the older ones, but those go for even more.

Now I finally have a secure spot to keep all my marbles.
(too bad I lost most of them years ago :lol_hitti)

It turned out to be a good day after all.

I did NOT know that, but you are absolutely right! I was thinking that era, but had no idea it was WWII. Apparently the dagger is the part that has the ********.

There are two ********'s, on the hilt there is an eagle holding one and one on the top finial [? not sure what it's called.]
and as timdp said, it's probably a repo that are a lot of them out there.

Did my big pick today. Didn't get my Wilton vise as the seller is keeping it.

I got all this though and a LOT more. All drillbits are USA made (pd $5 per box). The Hout tap and drill bit set is cool ($5). The vise is 2" and weighs nothing since it is all aluminum($75). It is German made.

Norton wheels are brand new and I have 2 of them ($5 ea). Pd $30 each for the Mitutoyo and Starret tools.

More pics of bigger stuff tomorrow

Went to the indoor flea market this morning, only ended up spending the 1$ entrance fee. One guys booth had a few interesting things but he was in the hospital and obviously the stuff I was interested in was the stuff that had no price tags. Sales are starting to dwindle down around here, will probably be going into hibernation until the Spring. Either way with all our Varsity Sports starting my "me" time on Saturday and Sunday mornings is about to go extinct anyways.

So my wife loves yard sales, she spends almost every Saturday she can going to them. She brings home so much "junk" as I put it I literally built a barn to store her "bargains" so I can have my garage back. I was out mountain biking yesterday when she texts and asks me if I'm interested in a Stihl Chainsaw. I already have a MS361, so not really but I do ask her, "How much?" She never responds. When I get home she has a Stihl 025 sitting in the garage. I'm not very impressed until she tells me she only paid ONE dollar. The guy she bought it from said it would never start when he bought it and he wanted it gone. I changed the gas and five pulls later had it running.

Saving for a new house is really putting a damper on my play funds. I walk around the flea market and get a few things to play with, but then I see a big pile of tool chests, filled with old Craftsman tools from the 50s, Starrett tools in a machinist's tool chest in PERFECT shape, Williams and Plomb and Snappie and Armstrong and Indestro, then the owner says he wants to sell them as a big lot for $400, and it's a STEAL for everything in the lot! But then I look over at my wife and she's giving me the eye that says "YOU'RE the reason it's taking so long to move!" and I gotta hang my head and sigh. But if momma ain't happy, noone's happy.

Here's the few things I did get today at the fleas....

pic 1: $6 for all
1962-dated canteen and cover, good condition
industrial control box, not sure what I can use it for, but it was only a buck

pic 2-3: $12
Craftsman clamp-on vise, 2-3/8 inch jaws, very good condition, I love the logo going vertically down the front of the vise

pic 4: $3
Craftsman trigger oil pump, nickel plated with a little rust, but works great

pic 5: all for $6
Stanley No. 80 draw plane, rewelded on one handle but it's a user
Stanley Bell System D screwdriver
Craftsman 1-inch C-clamp
lot of 3 screwdriver bits for hand brace
Stanley nail set

So for the most part, I've taken a hiatus because I have a mountain of tools to clean up right now... but the other day, my bonney CL alarm went off and had to jump on it. Asked the guy if he could hold it for me, which he did thankfully, and I grabbed it earlier... plus a hand plane.

Unused. Complete. 50's logo on the sockets. Just a bit of wear on the ratchet. $25 and going straight in my collection.

Yeah, she did good on that deal. I try not to encourage her "shopping because she has brought home more junk than I care to think about. She's brought home horrible electric chainsaws, electric weed trimmers, tool boxes with tools in them rusted to the bottom of the boxes. Almost everything she brings home, I already have. She tells me to give the stuff to our son but he just borrows all of my stuff. That's what usually starts her looking for things is my son will borrow something and I'm always trying to figure out where the hell my stuff is. After two years of her bringing home junk this is the first time I've been impressed. I did her she sucked today and gave her a thumbs up. She turns around and said, "You wish."

Now in the same deal with the chainsaw she also picked up a Stihl FS55 weed trimmer. The plunger on it was dry rotted and I was not able to get it to start but I figure a few parts and it will run. Oh, and the price was another crisp $1 dollar bill.
IMG_2829.jpg

The way she explained it is she was at this yard sale and the father of the guy having it showed up with the weed trimmer and chainsaw along with a bunch of other stuff. Teresa said the son wasn't thrilled with his dad dumping this stuff on him. After the dad left she asked the son how much for the saw and trimmer. He said a dollar a piece, it's his dad's junk, it doesn't work and he wanted it gone.

Okay - it's Curbside shopping season around here! The next town over is having bulk pickup over the next 5 weeks for different sections of town and this weekend was Section-1.

I saw a steel desk yesterday wavered on it - and went back today with my son for him to look at it today. We grabbed it and a vintage office chair at another stop.

The desk was painted poorly in tan and it needs a sand and repaint. There are no tags at all on the desk - they might be under the tan paint? Looking at it from below it seems possible to "flip" things side to side so the drawers are on the right and the knee hole is on the left. The pencil drawer is gone and the top looks like it was used as a workbench at some point.

The chair is a newer Harter - judging from the relatively modern sticker instead of a metal plackard/logo.

We picked up a bunch of other stuff but this is the garage/shop related materials. He's not going to use the chair so I'll toss it on CL and see if there are any takers.

Cheers

Jake: Great looking old safe. A lift table is in your future and you will be able to buy heavy items and not hurt yourself.

I though of that when I was taking it out of the truck, but it wouldn't have helped me get it down the stairs. I used a 2-wheel dolly and some ramps. It was a wild ride.

That is a beautiful safe. I assume you have the combo?

Thanks Jeff.

He showed it open, so I hope so!

The combo was taped to the top (I have it hidden now). I didn't feel the need to share it with the group.

The key to the inner locker is missing, but that's easily dealt with. I know a locksmith a few towns over that specializes in safes. I can take the lock off and bring it to him. Even if it didn't have the combo, the safe was open when I bought it, so all I would need to do is take the door off and bring it in to get the combo changed.

If it had been locked with no combo, I wouldn't have touched it for even $1.

I went to a sale today that was not really planned but turned out ok. I saw the listing last minute and it was full of hot rod parts, tools and such so I took a drive west about 45 minutes.
It turned out to be a live estate auction which can be good or bad depending on the level of common sense in the crowd. But thankfully there were few bidders that wanted to spend stupid money so most prices were reasonable. Unfortunately by the time I got there all the Hot Rod parts had sold but there were lots of tools left as they went around the garage.
I managed to get all this plus an all steel sliding door book case and a 5 tier shelving unit (not pictured) to what else, store all the tools I keep bringing home from sales. :dunno:

The tool haul includes 5 wood planes, a Craftsman body filler rasp, a couple practice grenades with rifle launch tubes, a Craftsman hole saw kit, a China made body hammer/dolly set, files by Nicholson, Oregon, Kromedge and a saw set vise/clamp.

So I went to follow up on an ad I saw on CL for some tools. The guys father in law had died and he was a plumber. The picture showed some good stuff and some stuff that was potentially junk. I thought it was worth a drive to check it out.

When I showed up in the neighborhood I figured I was going to score big or I was going to walk away with nothing judging by the houses. I had to stop and take a picture of one.

The guy had a ton of chinese junk and a good bit of stuff that was decent. I went through it all and picked out what I wanted. I took all the snap on wrenches, all the craftsman sockets, all the Klein pliers, some proto stuff and anything else that I recognized as being decent. I took a few torx drivers and some extra screwdrivers just because. I also grabbed a couple pipe cutters and a box of set screws. Also found a neat oil filter wrench and grabbed a hose cutter and a hacksaw as well.

As I was looking to settle up with him he asked me about the turbotorch which I had no idea about (I started a separate thread on that) but looked online and felt like I needed to take it.

On my way out he offered me this chainsaw (cheap he says) and I asked if it ran. He said it did but doesn't know. I know these things are pretty low end but I don't have a chainsaw and he offered it to me for $20 bucks so I grabbed it.

I paid him another $40 for all the tools and $80 for the torch since I figured the bottle was worth at least half that. $140 total. More than I was looking to spend and by far not the best tool deal I've gotten lately but I think I did okay.
