I've done the tape thing a few times, but that was only so I could walk away to pay for the item before I did any more digging. I've seen some who plaster the whole house with tape and then nitpik when it comes time to pay for all the items. There's usually a big pile of items they passed on left behind that others would have bought, but lost out on because of those guys.

As far as I'm concerned, if you tag it, you're committed to buy it even if you don't like the price.

People are crazy at estate sales. I was the first in the door at an estate sale two doors down from my house about a year ago. The check out table was literally three feet from the shop entrance, and I made a pile between the two. Everything went well at checkout until I lifted a two foot section of railroad track onto the table. A "gentleman" got in my face, talking so loud he was literally spitting on me...raving about how that was something from his pile (close to mine but still two feet away) and that I was trying to steal his items.

There are some things I'm willing to fight for, figuratively and literally, but estate sale items don't fall under the latter umbrella. It's hard to imagine that I'd forget or falsely remember moving a heavy piece like that. The whole ordeal was tempered by by the checkout lady offering me a longer, flatter section of track for a better price. She never did make good on that offer after the fact, but I did get several axe heads, two clamp vises, and some miscellaneous hardware thrown in for free due to the incident.

At the end of the day it's more of a hobby for me than a livelihood, so I tend to hope karma will bring them their just desserts.

I hear you there. In the incident I just referenced, I assumed that the checkout table and the three people manning it would be of assistance given the proximity. Unfortunately, that's a big "no sir" on that assumption. No holds barred!

Nice vises, Bagged. I wouldn't rassle you for them but I've met a few guys who would!

Yes sir. Not quite a garage sale but what I think was a pretty good CraigsList deal. I was on the fence before Nine brought me to my senses. Seemed that we both saw it simultaneously just after it was posted, and I was right around the corner.

A little bit of a different transaction than I'm used to, at least when buying a tool box. It was on the 11th floor of an apartment building. I show up, follow the directions provided to apartment 1110B. I see doors marked 1108, 1109, 1111, and 1112. Where there should be 1110, there's a door with no label on it. I knock. No answer, I text the guy, who says he's coming into the hallway. Nothing for a couple minutes, and a guy gets off of the elevator and walks toward me. I ask "Are you Jacob?" He more or less freaks out, sprints past me, and once clear of me he says in a low voice, "I don't know any Jacob". While it's not in a bad area at all the history, construction, and occupants of those buildings are a bit odd but understandable given the former ownership of and proximity to a controversial Televangelist from these parts.

It was at that point that I'm told by the seller that there are two buildings joined by the lobby I walked into. I'm able to find the guy by following the same directions in the second building, as they are more or less mirrored. Nice guy, quick transaction with a bit of haggling, and I'm rolling the tool box out of the door. Nobody stopped me but I think I passed about ten people inside and outside that assumed I stole it. Next time I'll get a receipt!

Sorry to be so long winded, TLDR;, etc. The box is nice and everything works. It was repainted black / white by a former owner who also added a custom rolling stand to it. I have the top key which locks all drawers except for the center drawer directly below the top key hole. Guy was asking $125 and wouldn't go below $100 but I think it was a fair deal. Unsure of the exact vintage but is likely 70s per Nine's estimate. Only markings I could find at a quick glance were on the top right of the front side which read "PAT NO 3393951". Hoping it's not quite too tall to put my drill press on so that I can get it off of my work bench and clear up some space.

So I went to see the guy I met on Sunday who mentioned he had 2 Vises for sale. I was only going to buy this Parker 973 for $30, but the seller was pushing me to buy both the Parker and a 3" Columbian. He was at $45 but I said no. Then he settled on $40 and I grabbed both. The seller collects and sells mainly singer sewing machines but also picks up vises. I need to find a parker no 1 vise wrench now.

Stopped at a sale before work and spent $50
Metal cabinet, 4 parts boxes, 2 rolls or Norton cloth backed sandpaper, a brass hammer, vise grip, assorted brand US made wrenches, wire wheel/brush assortment, drag link sockets, socket set, and a tape measure.

This cabinet has a hook on the back so I guess it's a toolchest side cabinet.

Picked up a decent lot for $20 this morning. The ad online showed a bunch of junk inside of the house and some pots / pans outside but no mention of the garage / shop whatsoever. It was close so I stopped by on the way to work and I'm glad I did. Got a proto box (mostly surface rust but a few pin holes in the left bottom), a small "Superior" belt driven grinder with working motor, three coleman lanterns, some yard tools, a wilton vise (swivel base needs repairing, or I may just remove it), a few Craftsman wrenches, about 30 misc. Craftsman sockets, and some other misc. items that were in the box.

That box would have been made by Waterloo. The date should be stamped (very lightly) on the bottom front rail, about 7" in from the right side. You may have to remove the paint and use a magnifying glass at an angle to read it. It will say "Made in USA" over a date (**-**). My guess is sometime between 1976-1981, more like '77-'78.

Yeah , I like the guys that run around put "SOLD" on every thing with blue tape. ... The minute they turn there back it's gone... and I leave the tape on some piece of ****.lol.

There was a dearth of tools at the sales this morning. Not even worth posting a picture of the pieces I brought home. Just a few incidentals. I had an old all metal staple/nail puller that went into my bag first, but now I can't find it. ****.

I don't blame you; nothing in the area looked promising this weekend. This was the estate sale off of Mullen drive. The pictures showed nothing of interest and if it wasn't on my way to work I'd have passed. I stopped back by on my lunch break, dug a little more, and for $2 came away with a DL hand cleaner dispenser, some misc. hardware, and a NOS variable speed wiper switch (PN 2770378) that fits late 60s Cudas, Chargers, Coronets, etc.

It should be more in the 80's, possibly very late 70's. Originally red frame, gray drawers. In the 70's, especially 76, that box had red drawers, gray frame and center (from top to bottom) mounted drawer pulls. Have yet to see a catalog scan of them.

Asked the fella if he had any other old tools for sale, so he showed me to the garage where i picked up these other items as well. Total was $25. My favorite is the "General magnetic level-protractor" thingy.

That's a great score. I really like using my workmate. Especially when I want to cut, grind, or sand outdoors

22" logging saw (kinda unusual), 7 oz Blue Grass hammer, several C clamps, set of Craftsman combo wrenches, two SK combo wrenches, and a pair of small Stanley shears.

It's definitely painted, this is the second one I own now. I like buying tools in pairs especially when it's an item I really like. Was yours an NOS one that you bought this summer? I kind of remember someone picking one up.

Stopped by my local junkyard today. I got these 2 pieces. First a hand crank sharpener from the 20s. Works great and the stone is perfect. Then I got this GIANT CLAMP.

This clamp weighs about 50 lbs and is made by Alsop Engineering. Originally designed to hold a 6' tank stirring motor (think big electric outboard motor). It rotates 360 and goes from horizontal to vertical. The table is 10 x 10. I will mount a vise to it and use it for grinding and welding (if I dont end up selling it, which I probably will). Paid 35

It's a pretty cool dust collection cabinet. It was full of sawdust before I vacuumed it out.


This one is slightly smaller than my other craftsman 10", but the accessories make it much better and slightly more compact to fit in my garage. Now I need to part out or sell the 10" saw.

Not too many scores so far this weekend. But I got a couple goodies yesterday after work.

Sears Craftsman 9-42970 "Electric Security Engraver" new old stock in original plastic pouch. No COO markings but it's a neat retro piece. Works great. I actually needed it too since my Dremel etcher grew legs and walked off.

Craftsman older 1-1/8 socket, 12 pt 1/2 drive. Marked C-36. Very nice chrome.

Finally small HD Armstrong c-clamp.
