warmpancakes is good people.

I've got a box of tubes in the basement from a free pile, I have no idea what to do with them or what to look for with them.

some are worth thousands, but most are worth nothing

you can google the numbers and if they are audio could be $$$; if just TV, not much, usually (a very few exceptions..)

I'm good with band saws right now BlueBolt but thanks! Actually I am looking for a deal on a Milwaukee portable but after that I'm done. Well, I take that back, I still want a Craftsman horizontal and then I think I'm done. : lol:

The 12" King Seeley is just about wrapped up, I just need to clean up the table and bolt it back on and finish soldering wires on the motor, reassemble it and get it on and I'll be done with it... I think:D

Wow what a day today.

Met Junkyarddog. Great guy. Picked up this 2 x 72" Square Wheel sander, this REALLY cool Grip-On vise with the wheel lock down, and this 87# Hay Budden Anvil. Paid, $230 for the anvil.

Pretty good deal on the hay budden, it looks to be in fine condition. Anything hay budden under 100lbs sells for a ton on flea-bay

Two planned stops this morning, first one was score. I hit the second one and the only tools were brand spanking new HF freebies. They were priced cheap at $1.25 for the flashlights, screw driver sets and tape measures so they will sell, just not to me. :D I hit about 4 sales on the way home for shitz and giggles but nothing of interest. Here is my booty for the day.
02199.jpg

02200.jpg

All U.S.A. on the right side pile, everything else import. Few names in the box, Snap On impact socket, bunch of Stanley screwdrivers, Proto punch, Miller Falls punch, Craftsman V wing ratchet, some wrenches, swivel socket, few extensions and standard sockets, couple wrenches and screwdrivers, Cee Tee pliers, Crescent pliers, old Klein linesman and Klein pocket knife, Ridgid pipe wrench, torch looks new, bunch of other good domestic brands in there too.
02201.jpg

I showed up and had a look around, inquired about tools and was pointed to a pile of circular saws so I asked if there was any mechanic type tools and they said no. I checked out the saws but passed and started chatting it up with the older lady about her raised gardens, raccoons and possums. We had a good laugh and as I was getting ready to leave, her son(older than me) said to hang tight, he went inside and came back out with the box above. When I opened it, first thing I saw was the Williams extension, then the two Craftsman ratchets, I asked how much for the entire box and he got the deer in the headlights look. I kept digging then found the Proto below and asked how much, he said $5, SOLD! I asked if they had change for $100 and he said yes but I would have to buy more than $5 worth so I offered $10 on the rest of the box, he countered with $15 so we shook on $20 total for everything. Finally got me a flex head swivel Proto hard handle ratchet like new, looks like it's never seen a socket. :willy_nil
02202.jpg

Now I have another box and bunch of tools for my upcoming sale and figure I can make some of my money back, definitely worth waking up today!

Damn Nine. Usually for me those misc boxes are full of junk.
:+1: Same here.

I only had one stop for this morning. The tools were mostly abused 70's/80's Craftsman. All of it overpriced. There were two small vises, a Wilton and a Dunlap. Guess which one went home with me.

I came out with a vise and an old washer assortment. (I needed to pick up some 3/8" washers on the way home anyway).

Normally an exposed screw vise won't get a second look from me, but this one was nearly pristine and still had the pipe jaws. I tried to get it for less, but other than to throw in the washers for free, they wouldn't budge. I just couldn't leave it behind for the unwashed masses to paw over.

3-1/2" Wilton Shop King
Schiller P'rk Ill.

I got a pile of machinists tools last weekend but nothing to get real exited about, only a few Starrett pieces. I plan to get out and look around a bit this weekend but I don't know if I'll get time. Good finds everyone especially nine4 on that box, I got lucky on one of those box lots earlier this year but usually just get a pile of chi-com **** and car parts.

Today I went to the wrong sale first,it was a pretty big flop. They postponed from last week due to road construction. Advertised lots of tools, turned out to be mostly over priced worn out 50 year old Craftsman stuff for hand tools.

Then went to sale #2. I saw Snap On in their pictures but figured it would be way over priced by that estate sale company. Got there in time to see all the Snap On and premium quality tools get hauled off by a collector/dealer. He told me I was too late!!! Then I almost threw up in my mouth when I saw the prices he paid on the stickers.

$8 for a full SnapOn 22 piece excellent condition socket set in the case with shallow and deep sockets, ratchet, breaker bar. :headshake
$2 each for large wrenches, hub cap puller, etc. :headshake
$10 for some other minty high quality dial torque wrenches in the box :headshake

I think the person pricing was blind. "Oh yeah this here feels like a cheap set. Lets put 8 bucks on it and see who bites.":headshake:sad:

Pic 1- meager haul from the first sale: Some nos Armstrong sockets, a crappy Meteor ratchet, some used Craftsman ratchet parts that were hidden in a little parts drawer. $4

Oh yeah, let's not forge the photo of my avatar that I found alone on a shelf. They threw that in free. Ironic isn't it.

From second sale:
Picture 2- Cee-Tee pliers large and small, Proto pliers, Channelock pliers, Crescent Wrench, Proto wrench, Ideal strippers,Husky breaker bar $8

Pictures 3 &4- The Snap On scraps that he left me. Metric Allen wrench set, test light, pocket screwdriver $3

Normally I'd be happy but I screwed up today.

I agree Nine, sometimes just striking up a conversation can help. I helped someone load a heavy chair once, and the homeowner was then very helpful to me pointing some buried stuff I had missed.

nine4gmc:

You did well and just proves a little conversation sometimes ends up paying off.

Have an off the wall question, that Companion 10" band saw uses 63" blade and it was designed to use 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8" widths.

I see they sell band saw blades locally that are 63-1/2 inches and so wondered if the tension adjustment might squeeze a 63-1/2 inch down enough to work on that Companion 10" band saw?

We win some, we lose some, some by a couple minutes.

3Bay,

Been there done that way more than once  . The worst is seeing guys walking out with the stuff, I rather have not even seen it..........the bastards............ :lol_hitti You still did pretty good considering your top choice wasn't all it was advertised to be. Guess I know which two sales to scratch of my list for tomorrow.

Like you said you win some you lose some. Never was a Star Trek fan but sometimes when hitting sales I think of how cool it would be to just zap yourself immediately to the next sale...........yeah that's how my brain works after a long work week

It should with no problem but if you want to be sure, wrap a string or belt around it and adjust it as large as it will go and measure it.

Thanks guys, I got real lucky today. I was literally walking off after looking at the saws and just happened to mention the raised bed gardens to the old lady. I think my beard may be intimidating to some older folk as they were keeping an eye on me before we started chatting like I was going to steal something but completely opened up afterwards and was laughing and joking with me.

Here's my last Lista, until I find another. Picked up a 9 drawer, the mate to the 7 drawer that I bought last week. Bought from the same guy, only the price went up to $600. I passed on that offer, then he calls back with the original pricing. Box is sound and square, but will be a total repaint inside and out.
4fa05a315bd13375200e7972dbfc2cd1.jpg

I was up in Tybee Island,Ga for work and scoped out sales along the way.
Found one, and thought I spotted a pair of Knipex pliers hanging on the wall. Made it there at 12, and sure enough a pair of Alligator pliers for $ 3, estwing hammer for $4 and some misc. Funny thing was the China pliers and such were priced at the same or higher.

And of course, two good looking sales popped up in my town while gone, guess I'll see what's left tomorrow.

15 miles out??? I have to drive 17 miles to the nearest gas station or grocery store. :3gears: Ah, but life in the country is worth every mile!

You guys are still finding good stuff. No one for me to go out as it's yard work and leaf cleanup one around the house. :(

Ditto here, although its too windy to rake, so I'm going to take time to process some of the recent purchases from the estate sales I'm no longer going to...:)

I need to see if that two stage air compressor I bought last weekend fires up. If it does, its going on Craigslist for hopefully a nice payback.

Figured this wasn't a bad haul for $30. Never had been to an estate sale before, so I show up 90 minutes early they hand me #4. First guy in when they started letting people in and was the only guy in the garage for a solid 10 minutes.

Around a dollar a tool is not bad for opening bell prices. Good score on some quality tools. What is the make/model on that double box end (DBE) wrench?

It is a Penens 9/16" and I think the other end in 1/2". It will work great as an option for working on snowmobiles as those are two very common fasteners on them.

They had a box full of Husky USA screw drivers too, but they were $2 a piece. I might go back tomorrow to see if they are still there for 50% off.

I decided to take the day off today.
Ok, what actually happened was that my BIL and I went to a "cask beer tasting event" last night and when my alarm went off at 6am my body said "screw you, you're sleeping in today". I was still drunk until about 10am. My BIL is still flat out on the couch. It was a good night (even though most of the beers I sampled were somewhat disappointing). :beer2:

(Yes, we had a designated driver take us home)

15 miles out??? I have to drive 17 miles to the nearest gas station or grocery store. :3gears: Ah, but life in the country is worth every mile!

I try to keep the miles down as that eats into, or I guess adds to, what the "hobby" costs me. Generally 1 to 1-1/2 gallons if possible, and that is probably my average "gas tax" for doing this, not counting the occasional long distance foray for something special or "road trips"/Drive with the family where we may hit a few places while in another area.

So that Estate sale:

Not a ton of tools and the "Tool boxes" mentioned got left behind (only one Kennedy carry box was worth considering, but I don't need more of those...)

What I did get was a small cardboard box of tools for $5, with some that were interesting:

a 1/4" drive Proto ratchet was the first thing in my hands, floowed closely by the partial set of Thorsen Combos, a Long C Craftsman DBE, an "Union mfg Co. Wood chisel that needs re-edged plus a couple of handles, two screw holders with mag tips at the other and, I think one is for Phillips, a double ended pin vise, a Stanley Sheetmetal hammer and driver, a Lufkin tape measure, a revolution counter, and tow small odd balls that have a narrow tapers square pin in handles with those wooden "sheaths" to protect them.

attachment.php

The brass bells were $5, and the music box key chain was a buck (both for SWMBO)

here is a close-up of those tapered square pins - anyone have a clue?

attachment.php

A book on 20's/30s/40's Winchester and Marbles collectibles from 1973

attachment.php

And a nice hardbound illustrated edition of the Sherlock Holmes collection. - $2

Picked up a few items at an estate sale. A Athol clamp on vise, a Richard Wilcox wood vise, a dewalt grinder, a Stanley #78 plane, 2 Pony clamps and what I feel ( for me anyway ) is the catch of the day a Versa Vise and a Yankee #1003 hand drill. I paid $120 for all.

I went with my son this AM to an Estate Sales.

He grabbed an old Dell keyboard with "clicky" keys - he's a computer kid.

I grabbed a toolbox tray, 2 pairs of leather gloves, an empty metal J&J Autocare medical kit, a pair of tweezers and a nail file. The tools had been pretty well worked over already.

Total of $11.00 - not a bargain but fine by me.

Wow. Great finds. I had a chance at a hand drill press recently, and I thought would be cool to have, but they wanted $75 for it, and it was gunked stuck. So not sure how much a rehab may cost. I'll keep looking.

A sewing machine motor gears down might be enough.

Speaking of hand drills I just used a 2 sp breast drill to drill a 15/16 hole with a hole saw in a 55 gal plastic barrel so I could tap it for 3/4" pipe. it went pretty fast surprisingly...
