I try to keep the miles down as that eats into, or I guess adds to, what the "hobby" costs me. Generally 1 to 1-1/2 gallons if possible, and that is probably my average "gas tax" for doing this, not counting the occasional long distance foray for something special or "road trips"/Drive with the family where we may hit a few places while in another area.




Great Winchester book!!! And I under stand the driving thing. But for me every thing is 15-20 miles away so I don't sweat the drive too much unless I have to go to the "BIG" city...kc. That's 70 miles one way

Hit one sale on the way back from selling a vise. Picked of a box of wire for 3 bucks for my new shop project next year , a Miller Falls egg beater drill and a 12" crescent.... $5.50

Speaking of hand drills I just used a 2 sp breast drill to drill a 15/16 hole with a hole saw in a 55 gal plastic barrel so I could tap it for 3/4" pipe. it went pretty fast surprisingly...

Right on, I was just thinking how cool a gas engine would be.

They look like they could be specialized cutting broaches for fine tuning the bore of a bushing. However cutting broaches are usually 5 sided.

Hit a family run estate that started on Thursday and I could only get there today, so it was pretty well picked over. Found this still attached to bench.

$ 5.00 and I remove, no problem. It's a CA Herriman No. 10 carpenters vice. Works fine.

Went to a sale advertised with a lot of machinist tools and equipment, with a partial list of the items. It was a pristine home shop, everything was taking care of and spotless. The company running the sale informed me it was being sold as one, by sealed bid. So no tools from this sale, just some Romex and a roll of 12 ga thhn wire for $5.

Things are really winding down by me these days, only had a chance to go to two sales. Picked up the following for a $1 a piece, total $7 bucks, less than lunch. The Stanley level is cool, but only one of the bubbles is good. Picked up what I thought was a file handle, turned out to be a precision screwdriver? of sorts complete with its little wrench. Didn't notice til I picked it at home and heard stuff rattling inside, so it was a cool surprise. What is a good way to degrease the wood on these old tools? I would really like to clean these up.

Dngr: I also have that wood handled screwdriver with the hidden compartment with more bits. Mine is a bit cleaner but don't recall a name on mine. Does yours have one. Maybe simple green or wd 40 on a rag for cleanup but ill let the pros chime in and listen for better answers. Nice finds.

Joe: You didn't pay too much for the swiveling starrett and I'm not sure I've seen one so maybe you have a keeper. It's every bit as nice as my reed 404.5 that will be my daily user and I paid more for it.

Nice finds there! I like that multibit screwdriver!

I clean wood handles and inlays with Murphy's Oil Soap, Its meant for he job and doesn't destroy the oils the wood needs to stay in good shape, in fact it helps restore them. Very rarely do I need anything stronger but if I do for something that has impenetrable stuff, I go for the surface layer only then back to Murphy's or I use something to manually scrape the crud off that won't bite into the wood. sometimes its a plastic kitchen scrubber, sometimes its the edge of something plastic the isn't too "edgey" I try for pressure rather than cutting to break it up with the latter.

Nice piece. I've had several like it including a Miller Falls 1868 version I bought for 6 bucks and sold for 115 so good luck with that piece!

I have a similar level, picked up earlier this year, with all 3 bubbles good. Must have looked great when new with the nickel finish.

Littlestown 400, picked up today at estate sale for $10. Bunch of junk on an old workbench, moved it aside, and found this bolted to the bench. Asked if I could unbolt and look at, they said sure, if I could get the vise off (they really didn't know much about tools, etc). Seems a bit loose, and I'm not diggin the paint job. So this may be my first vise rehab.

Hit up a local companies liquidation auction on thursday, Picked up two post vises, one complete the other one missing the spring,post and mount. 10 for the pair.

Also picked up a craftsman floor model drill press, Can't find any numbers on it, guessing it to be a 100 or a 150. Dp has a 1/2 hp walker turner motor hanging off the back, i dont think thats original but the rest seems to be. Luckily the table doesn't have any non factory holes. Couldn't pass it up for 10 bucks either.

Today, at the local antique co op, picked up a set of older craftsman nut drivers for 8 in good condition with the plastic pouch and a pint sized Unico oil can, figured it would go well with the DP

Some Snap-On SAE crowsfoot sockets, bent nose Petersen Vise Grips, Craftsman 1/4-inch ratchet, and a Craftsman 3/8-inch RHFT ratchet.



Williams S53 1/2-inch log-handled ratchet, 1/2-inch drive SAE sockets, Snap-On 1/2-inch drive ratcheting adapter and a 3/8-inch drive Duralast flex head ratchet.



Craftsman bottle opener, Snap-On wrench, Craftsman Professional hose picks, and Klein crimper pliers.



Finally, an old Snap-On toolbox that will be my first toolbox restoration project. Appears to have been made in the 1940's. It is pretty rough, but straight, and I couldn't pass it up for $75.

I've been spending on an el camino project so that is cutting into the tool budget, despite needing more tools than ever! Got something good this weekend, $60 on the Kennedy and $10 for the other stuff. One of the plug sockets is a Thorson, the other a New Britain. The box is in great shape, only a little rust on the handles and clasps, all the felt is intact. He also had one of the smaller ones that opens from the middle, like a tackle box, but I had to choose. Lots of estate sales but not many tools.
