I was going to nominate BlueBomber, just to see if we could shatter that illusion of retirement he keeps trying to convince us he's keeping to.

Ask him if he would take $500 for it. When he says yes, tell him that was just a demo of how everything is for sale.

I like it! Normally I'm a bit more witty but I'll be damned if I was more or less speechless.

I had two stops this morning. I stayed up all light just to hit them, they were clear across town. I'm on the couch watching all girls garage waiting for time to leave, the time arrives and off I go. I get to the first stop about 10 til 7( opening time ) and there is already a crowd, nothing worth buying though and I walked it twice from both sides of the tables being sure there was nothing I missed. Finally decided to roll on to the next one, I get there and realize its one I went to before. The lady owns an antique store and once a year has a garage sale with all the junk she can't sell in her store. Last year or year before I got the jewelers lathe tools there. This year there is nothing, I leave empty handed and head home.
I decided to hit up Merc to let him know the stops both **** and he replies that he was at my first stop an hour before me and help the woman set up... :wtf:  although he did get a few things, it was nothing I would have been interested in so no loss anyways. Her prices were high too for what she had, $100 for a small plastic tool box of muzzle loading ****, $10 for an even smaller plastic empty tool box, etc. I'm sure the rest of the month will be slim pickins too... Better luck next year!!

I'll start out by saying I **** for not texting or calling you about it. I got there right after 6. I was up early (the boy gets you on such a schedule) and decided to just roll toward that area. I parked and noticed the lady setting up and hauling things. I asked if she wanted me to wait, or if it was okay if I looked around. She told me it was fine to look around if I helped her with a couple of things. After seeing a few of the prices I nearly walked, but I figured I didn't have anywhere else to be.

She was asking $25 for portable metal tool boxes, 35 for plastic ones, and others like Nine listed above. Very few USA made tools to be had, and all absurdely priced. I chatted her up while moving things, saying that she might have a rough go as her prices were a bit high. She was surprised by that comment.

Around 6:30 everything was set, and I could see a bit better as it was just getting light. I told her that I was interested in the Craftsman tool boxes (2, $25 each), the Coleman folding stove stand ($5), a lamp (no marked price), and a few smalls that were unmarked...but again, that her prices were high. I also added that high prices aren't a huge deal as long as she's willing to haggle. She thought for a moment and asked me "What's the largest bill you have in your pocket?" I answered, "$20." She said "Then that's what I'll take."

It wasn't a bad deal but nothing great, either...but considering how high her prices were and how stubborn she'd been about it when we were chatting, I felt like I just won the lottery. After talking to Nine he knew right away that the lamp was a Dazor (P-2134), so that made the deal a little sweeter.

Nothing local, but I had a couple of addresses in the collage town we had to take my youngest back to. No tools listed, but other interesting things so...

This stop had a HUGE 3 way Knight Speaker. 15" the Motor/Magnet assembly weighs a ton!. For those not into audio, 3 way means the woofer (big cone) Tweeter (center horn) and Mid (covered with that cloth like stuff around the mini horn) al are in one frame. these were expensive back in the day, and can be still!

It needs one spot on the cone patched but looks great otherwise. Hopefully it will also sound great.

I also got this box near full of old service manuals from the golden era of stereo.
Lots of Pioneer and JVC, I haven’t had time to sort through it.

And a few books. A history book on Greece from 1925, and two shakespears

I mentioned 2 stops, but we had a TOO and I got these for resale. First time I’ve ever found guardian service with the glass tops!

Later in the day I again struck out, much in the same way as yesterday. Somehow I <always> seem to be the guy who happens upon the "not for sale" items that are somehow in plain site. I went to a thift store this afternoon. Nine, it's within a mile of your house...the "OMG" one. They have a small but growing section of tools. Most are overpriced but anything that isn't a set they seem to ignore. I dug through a pile of wrenches and I find a Snap On 14MM wrench so I figure I'll go a little further. I pick out a few other USA made items and turn the corner. Then I see another Craftsman metal tool box, with no price marked. Why not get three today?

I picked it up and realized it was full. It was mostly junk tools inside but there was a mostly complete 12 point 1/2 shallow Craftsman socket set, and about five Craftsman wrenches. I grabbed the whole thing and went to the register. I told the guy "I'm not interested in most of what's in here, but I'd like to know what you're asking before I dig through it."

"Oh....
...
...
...
I can't sell that."

"Why not?"

"That tool box was brought in...by somebody else...and hasn't been gone through. So I can't sell it."

"Well can you sell any tools in it?"

"No..........................it has to be looked through. The tool box and the tools."

"Okay, do you have somebody who does this? Who does it and when do they do it?"

"I can do it, but not right now."

(there are no other customers in the store)

"So I'm here, willing to buy some or all of this, and you're able to look through it, but...you won't sell me anything?"

"Yes, that is correct. It takes a lot of time to price tools like this."

I was pretty aggravated at this point, but not butthurt enough to leave without what I'd found. So, for three bucks plus tax, I got a KD USA driver, Channel Lock 430 pliers, Snap On 14mm wrench, and a double box end Challenger wrench.

1212-2.jpg

Twice in two days! I don't think the guy working was the proprietor of the establishment so it's likely he wanted it for himself. In his defense, however, it was the one thing in the store without a price tag on it or in a bin marked with a price (each). In hind sight, I'd have gotten a good deal if I bought the sockets and wrenches I wanted in the box without bringing everything up to the front, but c'est la vie.

Merc, no sweat, had I slept in and gotten a call at 6:30 you would have sucked!!

I've stopped in OMG twice, once nothing but the second time I got a craftsman ratchet for $0.50, they are hit and miss...

Crazy you end up with two "no sales" in one weekend!

Matt, you made out like a bandit in both situations!

Back to the nominations, I'd vote for either, anyone else have suggestions?

Picked up a cross slide table and machinist vise today for $25. Seller told me the table is an enco. It's 19" or so wide I think.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1450048049.891084.jpg

It will fit perfectly once I get my drill press back together. No more clamping and unclamping a piece over and over when it needs multiple holes drilled.

I haven't done much used tool shopping in the last few months, but I happened across this "little" gem today on CL. A 3 ton Dayton arbor press in lightly used condition that I picked up for $30.:rocker: I put the 25' tape measure in the picture for size reference, this thing is quite large. It weighs around 100 pounds, so I guess I paid 30 cents a pound.:bounce:

I almost purchased one of the Palmgren 2 ton arbor presses during the Enco black Friday sale. Then I almost picked up a 2 ton Dayton during the Zoro cyber Monday sale, but I already had a pretty full cart and I couldn't justify spending any more at the time. I am glad I waited, because I got a little better deal with this one.:lol_hitti

I didn't take a picture of it, but the seller also threw in a 12" bench-top Ryobi DP120 drill press for free. It is in lightly used condition. It looks like it could use one replacement belt and that's about it. I think I will make sure everything works and then just set it up as a dedicated drill press for smaller projects and wood. My main Delta Rockwell drill press doesn't have a table height adjustment crank and this Ryobi does, so it's worth keeping around for now.

You sir, "****"! 30 bucks for that press???

Nice score on the press! I picked up the following today from a CL ad- I really only wanted the cable hoist and the craftsman 1/2 drive set, but the guy kept bringing stuff out to sweeten the deal, so I finally gave in and bought everything. Total was $60. Some good stuff, and some pretty crappy stuff not pictured, that I actually threw out. The set under the sk 1/4 in. set is labeled Indestro.

Finally a SCORE!! Palgren 8" x/y rotary table with 3" Craftsman drill press vise for $50, plus I owe Merc a delivery fee for picking it up an hour away!! I had been in touch with a lady when I saw this in the background of a CL ad for wood working tools on a drill press. After contacting her, she mentioned having 4 more bench vises(one being big) for sale as well. I asked her for pics and she sent them with model numbers this morning while I was sleeping. By the time I woke up, I saw her message saying if I wanted any of them to let her know as she had someone coming by 30-45 minutes later. I freaked the F out. :willly_nil
After researching the "big" vise I found what they go for and hit her back asking if it was damaged in any way and for more pics. I did not hear back from her and was getting worried. I was not interested in any other items but the x/y table but Merc mentioned wanting a big swivel vise so I wanted to make sure it was in good condition to grab for him. My mom happened to be in town too and while having lunch we discussed taking a ride to go get the vices if the lady ever responds. My phone rings and it's Merc, after eating I check my messages and see a text from him with the pic below, he was at the lady's house right then!! He was trying to convince her he wanted to pick the x/y and vise up for me but she promised not to sell out from under me so I got her on the phone and confirmed the deal, he paid for my x/y and struck a deal for the big vise along with other goodies(I'm sure he'll post) and brought it back to town for me. I could not be happier, Merc IOU man!!
I just got home from his house where he loaded me up with some things he wanted to get rid of too that I will post later. I have been searching for a 6" rotary for years and thought this was one, turns out to be an 8" Palmgren made x/y rotary, I am even more excited and just wait til you guys see what he came home with, AWESOME day for me for sure, I think he will be a lil more excited when he does some research on his finds as well!! :rocker:

They are marked -VV-

Honestly didn't expect "you ****" on this stuff, but hey, I'll take it; Basically it was just a right place right time type of situation. The guy listed a few things plus the hoist, and he just kept throwing stuff in saying he would never use them. Turns out his father was a mechanic, but he had chosen the landscaping route.

Nice score Nines! That is a cool vise can't wait to see it restored. Cool story and you ****, glad you found it!

Some items I picked up at an estate sale and flea mkt in St Louis a few weeks ago. The Plvmb adjustable, 2 little pipers, 42" long shop-forged RR wrench, Littco #25 vise and misc came to $30. The antique Husky set in original tin was another $17.

I was traveling between offices for work and that usually means that I look around on Craigslist for anything interesting to check out on my lunch break. I saw an add in a different city than Nine had indicated his vise was in, though it were nearby. I didn't put two and two together until I was talking to the lady and getting off of the interstate. Now when I tell you this place was deliverance revisited...multiply that times three. For the first three minutes I wasn't sure if I was going to get a good deal or have my skin turned into a coat, but they were very nice people and the lady was very polite and fair. I don't want to get into the details of her story for various reasons but I got a great deal, Nine got great deal, and she was happy as well. She had some other things there that weren't my cup of tea or were too big / expensive for me (farm implements and whatnot), and I've sent some pictures to some friends / family and hopefully she'll get what she wants to sell sold.

I did bug her for about five minutes about how I wanted Nine's vise and that I was buying other things and would only buy them with the vise, just to see what she'd say about the previous deal she had with Nine. To her credit she wouldn't budge without talking to Nine and laughed after I told her that I knew Nine and was going to call him and do the deal on his behalf...but she didn't quite believe me until she talked to Nine on the phone. Regardless, you'd be surprised how quickly Nine calls after you send him a picture of that vise. Two calls, no answer. A text with a picture of the vise...the phone rings instantly :D (Just giving you a hard time man, I know you had things going on).

With that being said, I got the following for $70:

Kennedy K-20 toolbox
9 bicentennial edition blue mason jars, new with instructions and gaskets
Small pillow block bearing grinder setup
1 Stanley and one no-name plane

Oh, and the reason I went out there...a Columbian 604 vise. Been wanting a nice swivel vise to complement my Wilton 500N. In good shape and will be a welcome addition to the shop.

I also got a sweet Homelite chainsaw in somewhere between 5 and 9349234234982734978 pieces from Nine when he came to pick up the vise. Now I'm a chainsaw and axe junkie so that kind of thing gets my excited. Once I actually clear off my workbench I'll lay it all out and see how badly he's wanting to torture me with this project. I made sure to return the favor and offload a few projects on him. Had he not had to leave, he probably would have ended up with more.

While I was on the phone confirming the deal with the nice lady, I could hear her uncle in the background telling Merc to squeal like a pig, he really took one for the team and I can not thank him enough! :D
