my buddy went out of town this morning to buy a bicycle he found on CL.
the guy had this union chest in his garage also. my buddy asked about it and he said t was his wifes grandfathers and he didnt know what to do w/ it.
my pal offered him 30 bucks and brought it right to me.
he wants all the tools in it and i can have the chest.
its good to have friends like that:thumbup:

So the girlfriend and I went out thrifting the other day, and the 4th thrift store we went to, I parked out back by the donation drop offs. As we were leaving, there's an older guy dropping off some stuff, and I notice tools. I go up to him and say "hey, you're not donating those vises, are you?" he goes "Yea, I'm down sizing and don't need 5 anymore, so I'm keeping two and getting rid of these three. If you want them you can have them." I said no, I can't just take 3 vises for free from a stranger, so I gave him the last $21 I had and gave him my number for his other two if he ever decides he doesn't want them. Still feel bad only giving him $21 but... definitely couldn't just take them.

This little Columbian has 3" jaws and is in real nice shape. Started tearing it down cause it's getting blasted as soon as I'm done this post.

This Dunlap is bad *** with the bullet nose! Missing the one handle, but an easy fix. Has 3 1/4" jaws. This is gonna replace my 60's CMan of the same size.

This Prentiss Bulldog, I'm in love with the font work, and definitely going to keep it... for awhile at least. One jaw is cracked, and the back anvil is cracked and missing a chunk, but still looks bad ***. 3 1/2" jaws on this one.

Happy New Years gents! And happy hunting to you all this year!

This thread got me thinking maybe I should up my normal search radius for auctions since you guys have already started finding cool things in 2016. My usual weekly tool auction is closed until March 1st for the winter.

Found this one:
http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionview.cgi?lid=2641640

Sounds like there might be some cool stuff but there's no pictures of any of the tools.

Now I am battling with myself on whether I want to wake up early to drive 50 miles down state with only pictures of dolls in pretty clothes to goad me on!

I'm partially expecting to get there and find the "Vice" is a made in China Irwin from a big box store and that it sells for more than retail.

Some great finds so far, I'm hoping I'll be able to get out more this year than I did last year.

I stopped back by the warehouse sale again today thinking I could get some discount prices but they got me again... I say they got me but you guys know me by now, I would leave it there before I over pay for something. I'll post pics later but it's not too much to look at.

Cool new(old) cabinet from the 3 day warehouse sale that I've been to 5 times personally and even got a few items from Merc after his second trip... [emoji38]

Rick: I don't even think vises like that exist in Illinois! At least not within a few miles of wherever I've always been. In all my flea marketing and auctioning and garage sailing I've never seen ones like those. The best I've gotten was an original Vacu-vise... Which I broke last night cleaning up. Threads caught and I bent the handle. Now it's seized with a bent handle. :(

Nines: what are you going to do with that upholstery stuff? Flip it? Use it? Also those cabinets look cool but are they super grodelated inside? I find metal cabinets like that at the tool auctions but they're usually too far gone inside to try to do much with.

Remember - Hoarding is the original Recycling plan.
We all want to keep our planet green, don't we ?

I'll have to try that quote on my wife. She tells me I am a hoarder, maybe I can convince her I am an envioramentalist.

As time allows, I'll be on the hunt, and post accordingly (still kinda new to the GJ)

Great job, Jake. Looking forward to a successful year tool-hunting in 2016. And I promise to try and start posting images of my finds again. I used to enjoy that, back when I had the time. LOL

Nice opening post, Jake. Now, I'm going to violate one of the rules.

My favorite flea market was digging out from under the flood, so I went on to another antique shop that has been good to me a few times. I picked up a big cast iron electric/manual cream separator for $40. SWMBO was with me, and I figured the price would be much higher and I could pass with a clear conscience. No such luck. Good thing she's so understanding! I think with its heavy, bolt-down base it will make a good grinder stand. And, for $2 I scored a very interesting pair of parallel-jaw pliers. The mechanism is kind of like a Crescent wrench - never seen anything like them.

No pictures - but I'll get some and post them later. Really!!

Got an old New Britain-made Matco BR8N 45-tooth 3/8" drive ratchet at the flea market today for $5. Took it apart when I got home and the internals are in great shape. Going to clean and lube it at work on Monday.

Hey firworks, I do upholstery by trade and will be putting this stuff to work! The cabinets are both in decent condition, no pitting but there is a little surface rust, great candidates for a clean up or resto.

Well the fact that you were repeatedly visiting an upholstery auction makes more sense now! Also that's good about the cabinets. The ones I see are always disgusting inside and a hair from rusting all the way through.

Richard, luckily he does not, I'll let him speak for what he does for a living but I will say he's in to knife making as a hobby so hopefully we can get together and bang out some blades one day as I would like to get in to the hobby myself.

Not a huge success today but got my feet wet for the first time this year. Answered a cl ad and was able to pick a few items for $50.00 . He has 3 buildings and a basement full but wasn't ready to let me dig through it all. Maybe next weekend for more. Hopefully I by paying more than I should of will help me later.:dunno:
Unmarked 50 pound anvil
3/4" drive H Taiwan ratchet / 1-5/16" socket- It should last until I can find a better one. Better than just the breaker bar I have now.
Pat. 1987 set of SAE Craftsman ratchet wrench's .
Not the best stuff I've picked but the best so far this year!
Now off to the Chiefs game I go with my grandson!

Well this qualifies as neither tools, or anything I actually bought at a garage sale. But I'm not going to start a thread for this . . . just thought it was worth posting for kicks. It's 27-degrees here in Chicago, not a lot of garage sales today - but I am always on the lookout for a bargain - look what I found next to a dumpster today behind a sports-shoe store.

Two 42" Zeinith Plasmas mfg date 2010. I have a 32" Sony tube that is about 12 years old, so this is an awesome Christmas present.

The two teenagers taking them out said: 1) they work fine 2) their boss told them to put them at the dumpster because they just replaced them with newer sets. Remotes and cables were taped to the back. LOL

Not tools, but still deserving of a room reverberating "YOU SUUUUUCK!"

I got to go through my "haul" from the terrible Auction I DID end up going to yesterday. Also I was wrong about the vise probably being a china Irwin or something. THERE WAS NO VISE! :(

Anyhow, here's what I got for 7$.

The contents of someone's junk drawer.
XknA4ZH.jpg

I'm set for life on picture and mirror hanging hardware. I filled a box of the stuff that I magnetted out of the bottom of the flat and didn't include it in the picture. I can at least put that little CAT screwdriver set on my CAT shelf in my den as a decoration. Also the spirit bubbles in the level look fine so I think I can use of that. It's a USA Empire level.

And I got some random tools in the next flat. I hit them with a scotchbrite wheel just to see any names or engravings on them.

zGWnO1i.jpg

I'm not sure what some of those tools in the middle are with the wooden handle. They're triangular like a file but totally smooth. It's just a steel triangular prism mounted in a handle. The chisel in the middle already cleaned up pretty nice and I think I can get some use out of that once sharpened up.

0HpZLbO.jpg

These Wiss Snips are the reason I grabbed the flat though. They still move pretty smoothly. I'll probably unbolt them and clean them up more thoroughly and I think I'll have a nice big set of snips.

w1N50Em.jpg

There's also this Moore monkey wrench with Ford stamping on the head. Doesn't work real well but maybe with a good cleaning of the threads it'll perk up.

xm0XdlD.jpg

This box was pretty cool from the outside... but the inside is horrible. It kinda looks like someone was using it to drop dross into while casting or something. I'm really not sure... Still looks pretty cool though and I think is home made.

nZhpjCF.jpg

qn6wEbw.jpg

Once I got to go through it all I feel better about it but I was kinda burned up yesterday that I got up early to drive 130 miles to an auction that had like 5 flats of tools total, and no vise and no toolboxes like the salebill said. :soapbox:

That white level is the same as the first 4' level I bought in the late 80's/early 90's. I dragged that thing all over the place on jobs and it still survives. Although, one of the bubbles is empty now. Not a bad investment for a plastic level.
