No, not that sale. Other than getting to sit in a Rolls and hear it run, it wasn't worth the gas to drive all the way out there. Most of the sales today were disappointments. I scored a few things, but can't post 'til later. Watching the end of the Leicester City BPL game.

Well, I went to the World's Largest Yard Sale. Didn't find much. Let myself down, and shame on those horrible vendors too for not bringing any tools.

A real time waster, lol. And that is definitely not a collection of Pierce Arrow wrenches from the great granddaughter of a Pierce Arrow test driver in the second last picture.

And this can't really be a Herbrand catalog. I look through piles of old paper in the hopes of finding stuff like that to no avail.

3bay, nice.

Hey, I finally made it to the Clarence Flea today. I got there about 8:30 and it felt like a ghost town. There were maybe 10% of the vendors open.

When does it get busy?

SUNDAYS! Only Sundays there. Tomorrow is the rescheduled Great American Yard Sale there. Normally 1st Sunday every month. It got rained on last Sun. so they bumped it to tomorrow. Might **** though, Mother's day too.

Gosh darnit! If I knew you were headed this way the fairgrounds had the big one today.

Hit yard sales today (Saturday) and got the following:

Bought an Enterprise Lard Press which was very rusty and both handle/main screw were rusted shut.

Could see an attached press plate and the inner ring with multiple holes. However, could hear something rattling inside.

Put some PB Blaster on it in morning, then took it all apart in evening and wire wheeled it. Did find that the rattling inside was the base plate and a metal nut/tube for stuffing sausage in casing.

Pics 1 and 2 are front/back of it after rust cleaned off.

Second item at same sale, was a round piano bench. Will take some work to get everything glued up right on it, but like the look. Pic 3

Last items came from another sale, with it being a Disston Saw, Sliding T-Bevel square and a knife. Why is it that there is always rust found on the etching side of the saw? Pic 4

Hit the jackpot yesterday, got a set of Mitutoyo Precision tool kit for $100 down from $200 after some negotiations :bounce:. A little surface rush on the combination square set, but it doesn't bother me.

Not a tool in the traditional sense but it is a tool for cooking steaks. There was a community sale in a small neighborhood about a mile from me went over this morning and a younger couple had a few small things and this grill they said was broke. I said how much he says 5 bucks, I said how much thinking I did not hear him correctly and he say 5 dollars, I said sold. The handle was loose replaced with 1/4 20 ss screws, the switch and igniter are bad replaced switch, ordered the igniter from Amazon it was $8. Bought a tank at HD $40 filled. It works great using a lighter to start it. Best 5 dollars I spent in a long time.

I planned on 5 stops this morning (Sat.), I ditched the third stop as iffy and inserted the aforementioned "Chelmsford " sale in its place. It might have been a mistake. The other sales were either disappointing or not as promising as anticipated.

The first sale was at a family run estate sale to clear out an old shadetree mechanic's overstuffed shop. It promised to be an epic pick. It ended up being a little bit of a letdown. (If anyone is interested, I know where to find a '64 Ford Falcon carcass for $100) The first thing that caught my eye was a 6" Wilton Tradesman. While I was trying to figure out how much of my cigarette money I could do without so I could make a decent offer, I learned that the bench that it was on sold last Wednesday, vise included. So I was informed by the new owner. I didn't ask how much he paid, I was afraid to find out.

The estate had private pre-sales all last week and most of the good stuff was already gone. The prices today were all over the map, somethings were going for pennies, other things were priced sky high. I didn't want to take any chances, so I waited until the guy doing the pricing went inside for a break and checked out with another family member. I was quoted $27 for my pile, but I felt it was worth more to me so I gave them $40.

First stop :
plastic box (to hold the small bits)
21"x23" sheet of rubber
Craftsman (underlined) 3/8dr ratchet (circle-H)
SnapOn OEX-240 3/4" short combo wrench (1957)
New Britain 1/2" socket plug (male-male) (rusted lump, one ball spring toasted)
Proto 4005-B 2-way/3-way puller crossarm w/screw
unknown tire valve stem puller
Justrite #25040 4gal flammable liquid storage cabinet (17"x17"x22.5")
orange storage tote

My 2nd stop was a bust, as was the 3rd (Chelmsford). Although, the third stop did allow me to put my hands on a Rolls Royce.

The 4th stop was dismal, but for $9 I was able to pick up a metal cabinet to store spray cans in. (after I scrape out the lumps of grease and do some repairs to the door)

Steel cabinet (14.25"x11.75"x63.25")

My last stop was at a Boy Scout yard sale (and Mother's Day plant sale). As usual, it was full of common yard sale fair. I grabbed a small plastic crate for a dollar to contribute.

This weekend has been a bust, with all the family activities, so these pictures are from our fun last weekend.

Beginning with a sale on Thursday afternoon:

$5 - Companion 1/2 Rachet Set (Nice and shiny and the only rachet set I actually own)
$5 - Import Drill Index (looks brand new)
$10 - Everything else - I picked up the scissors because they look to be of higher quality. One is made in Sheffield England and the other in Italy. The kitchen knife is going to be taken apart and modified for a knife project, and the two small knives I picked up just for the heck of it. I also bought the brass flat screwdriver because it had a cool factor to it. The large scredriver has three more succesively smaller screwdrivers nested inside of each handle! The rasps came out of a huge box full of tools, and I tried to find the gems in the bunch. I have also been using garage sales to stock up on consumables like razor blades and the like.

On Saturday, after my sons soccer game, we hit a few additional sales.

I am a sucker for these wood handled awls, and the 24" square was in great shape. But, I think the best find of the weekend were these goggles. My 9yo son spotted them and had to have them for his homemade Star Wars costume. I was told they were welding goggles, but there is no darkening feature that I can tell.

No matter what their original purpose, they are now speeder-bike goggles for my sons!

Speaking of my sons, this goggle find has made them into full blown garage sale fans and they want to go out every weekend! So, I am doing my part to make sure there will be customers to buy all the stuff you guys leave behind!:D

Nice cabinet. I never saw one so small before.

I'd like to get a larger one to keep my gas cans in, but I don't want to pay the high prices for them. This is the first one I've seen that I could afford, but it's so small that I'm not sure what I'll put in it. Probably garage lubes.

Went to the local flea this morning. There were only 30 or so dealers today (down from the usual 250 or so) due to the threat of rain and the threat of Mothers Day. Here is my $10 haul.

Herbrand J-818 3/8dr 9/16" deep socket
Craftsman 1/2dr Butterfly selector ratchet (=V=)
Proto Professional #5467 1/2dr breaker bar

Not very many sales this weekend even though weather was good.

Stihl 026 that looks nearly new for $50. Guy claims "no spark". I got it home and it has good spark. What it doesn't have is good compression. I suspect it was a victim of straight gas and needs a cylinder kit.

P1060550.jpg

Old Timer knife ($1), Xcelite metric nutdriver set ($3) and drill index ($5).

Jake, nice find on the Flammables cabinet! I've been watching for on myself!

Lube I'd be not so worried about. It takes some doing to ignite those and they tend to burn vs explode. Id start with the most volatile stuff you have as much as possible. Gas, the higher level things like carb and brake cleaners and the like; Starter fluid would be another good one.

I have an old Traffic signal box outside my shop against the north wall where it is shady all the time (I wish it still had the top "bell" vent.. the PO removed it...) but it has all the chemicals that are in plastic containers. I discovered it gets damp inside there so metal is rust waiting to happen... it's decent, but not a true Flammables cabinet. it does have vents down low so if any fumes do build up, the have a place to bleed off to and the hole where the top vent was is covered loosely with a steel plate so it it did happen to go boom, that might give it a place to "instantly vent". if not, it's not bolted down, but between the two it should not go far in "The Event"...

JA, those are welders goggles but the dark lenses are added under the clear (clear are consumable...) They let the welder pick how dark they need, depending on the work being done.
