Wow guys, I step out for a few hours and you all go to town.
Outlaw, glad to see you found one of your unicorns.

Fair warning, I had a busy day. My one pic/post limit will make this a 5 post saga.

As I posted earlier, my day didn't start off well. I left the house at 7a, and didn't get back until 1p. I drove from one end of the county to the other, and back again.

The first stop was at a hoard that should have been a fun dig. Instead it was a wet mess that had already been picked over a year ago. The garage was caving in and last nights rains were still dripping inside. The smell in the basement was a thick cloud of rot. The trash in both was piled to the ceilings and the "paths" were just thin spots in the debris you had to climb over. I kept waiting for river rats to make an appearance. The detention unit trash compactor on the Deathstar would have been a more pleasant place to spend my morning at that point.

The 2nd and 3rd stops were just average yard sales with the usual junk.

And then ....... I made it to the sale I should have started at. This was the 2nd day, so I wasn't expecting much, if anything. The first thing i spotted when I got there was a Craftsman 1/2hp motor, but she wanted $20 for it. I told her that I'll start a pile and "we'll see what we can do". Off to the basement I went. I swear I heard angels singing when I turned the corner into the workshop. There were piles overflowing the shelves onto the floor. It was mostly boxes of bolts, but with a little digging a few nuggets could still be found.

Eventually I glanced at the end of the long bench (more angels singing). A very nice Reed 204R ! Originally they wanted $75 (which is probably why it didn't sell the first day). She said that she'd go down to $60. I told her that If I can get it off the bench, I'll put it in my pile and "we'll see what we can do". It took a little work, but I got it.

Then it was back to scrounging on the floor. Added to the other odds and ends was an odd green toolbox with its contents.

Let the negotiating begin ! Eventually she agreed to $80 for the small pile because she remembered me dragging a 5" Parker out of an attic at the last sale of hers I went to a year or two ago. Sometimes, but not always, it helps to have a memorable face (OK, they only remember the hat and the beard).

Here's the take :

- Reed 204R (a little surface rust and a bit of overspray)
- Craftsman 115.6962 1/2hp 1750rpm (1951) motor (I need another one like another hole in the head, but at least my brain gets fresh air)
- Williams 3/8 socket kit w/contents (#8158 ???) (I need to do more research, late 1940's I think, but I can't find it yet)
- Trouble light cover
- homemade aluminum phone model (too kool to leave behind)
- General 5X magnifying loop
- 2x - 1-9/16dia handle balls tapped for 7/16-14 or M12-1.75

I was feeling good after the last stop, so since I was in the area I decided to stop in to the far flea market (ok, I needed to go in that area anyway to stock up on smokes). There wasn't much there, but I did find 2 sockets I needed to fill in sets. Unfortunately the seller wouldn't separate the "sets" he made (all mixed brands), but he was only asking $4 for the 7 sockets, so it wasn't too bad.

- Williams B-1228 3/8dr 7/8" socket
- Williams ST-1220 1/2dr 5/8" socket
- Proto (LA) #5416 1/2dr 1/2" socket
- Crescent CS-1218 1/2dr 9/16" socket
- Gilles #514 1/2dr 7/16" socket
- Allenite (Japan) 1/2dr 3/4" socket
- ?????? (Taiwan) 1/2dr 11/16" socket

Next, it was back to the other side of the county where stop #6 gave another happy ending. It was an elderly couple downsizing. At first I was disappointed by what I saw on the tables, but they told me to go back to the garage and see what I could find. The garage was hidden by a driveway full of UHaul tented pallets they were using to move with.

Once I squeezed through the pallets, I was initially disappointed by how empty the garage was. However, the first thing I spotted was a well worn wrench roll that I grabbed. The roll was on a table that was blocking the view behind it. As soon as I craned my neck to look over, I spotted a familiar silver metal box that I'd been hoping to find for some time now. Needless to say, that table was no longer an obstacle.

- Huot fractional drill bit cabinet w/contents :rocker: (been looking for one of these for a while. Now I just need to find a numerical and a lettered cabinet to match)
- Billings Valuline DOE wrench roll (missing 5 wrenches + 1 oddball)

When I went to checkout, they only wanted $10. I gave them $20 and gratefully thanked them.

My last two stops sucked, but at that point I didn't care.

Here's a lousy shot of the contents of the Huot.
- A few drill bits
- Lots of taps
- Some worn out number stamps
- A few good number stamps
- Some odd number stamps (-2, -3, 9-1/2, 13-1/2) strange
- Lots of odds-n-ends

Minus the cigarettes, I spent $104 today.

For those of you who read all this, thanks for hanging in there.

Hit probably a dozen yard sales, one church rummage sale, and one estate sale today. Every yard sale, junk junk and mo' junk. The church sale had one booth with tools, ended up walking away with several drill indexes and a bunch of bits for $10. Ended up finding the estate sale late in the day and most of the tools were picked over (weren't many to begin with), but I picked up this tiny lil Plumb ball peen for $2. Overall, not a bad day.

Well that ad pretty much sums it up, and the deign is pretty clearly for square nuts/bolts rather than hex, so it came at the end of the era for square fasteners being the common standard. No wonder its not really been seen around!

Don, you ought to post that one on the DOE thread, as while it lacks the "D", more than makes up for it being adjustable, (more than even 2 sizes!) and the ratcheting is simply a plus (I posted a DOE "Racheting" SO that had the "hook" jaw as one jaw side that is usually seen in combo variants)

Cold and windy at the local flea market this morning. A lot of sellers were packing up at 10a. Met up with an estate sale regular that sells there. He was at that same hell hole I went to yesterday morning. We spent a little time commiserating about the sale and where we each went afterwards. Turns out that I had a better day than he did. I WIN ! :bounce:

Spent $9 on a few things.

- half of a Cman table saw jig (I have a Power Bronze one, but was missing the brackets. Now it's complete)
- Pexto #82 short sheet metal shears
- 18 asst. metal handle wedges (always need them, can never find them)

Bought a nice SO 1-1/4" OEX combo for $1 at the Flea and traded it to another vendor even up for a triple play.

Got me some good deals of Craigslist today..... Went originally for the impact, but found the drill press and 350 watt cute little generator.

The drill press had literally NO USE, looks like it has been sitting in this guy's shed forever. The impact also was VERY clean and "like new". The little generator i got him to throw in. It sputters with ether throw in to it, fuel line are probably clogged. Dont know anything about it, but it is VERY cool. Will make a good project. He wanted $150 for the press, and $50 for the impact. Which is a steal already. Dropped him 2 bills for everything and told him i will be back later in the week to poke around more. (He had soooooo much stuff.)

A few years back, my Dad wanted me to restore his apple cider press.

Pic 1 was how the wood looked like when project started.

Pic 2 was how it looked after it was done, including the cast iron metal.

Today, was looking over a CL listing and saw one owner pic and no description. Pic 3

Called seller and went out and bought it, so Rest of Pics are from when I got it home. Given the lack of cast iron support, would have to think it was used to press something light like grapes.

Kunk those Tiny Tigers have a mini cult following.

I have one, but there is small check ball in the carb that went "Sproing" when I was squirting car cleaner into it and its completely dissipated.. (into the dirt, plants...)

I'd call that just adjusting the territory to a reasonable area. I did that a long time a go and only do the long runs for a particular something I just can't live without or I will combine a stop with some other reason I needed to be there. I don't generally "make up a reason" for that though. :3gears:

Nice scores guys! I'me working on some pics, I need to get some "work" work done, and I may sneak out to revisit one stop...

Nice finds Bomber, I like those plier/adjustable wrench combos. NOS Indestro set too for 5 bucks, I think some suckage is due there.

You may not be driving all over the countryside, but there's nothing "semi" about flying all over the countryside to get to a sale.
Thanks, guys. I definitely will be more selective and won't chase sales like I used to. The main reason was the time it was taking away from household duties--SWMBO's patience was about worn out. The cross country stuff made it easy to squeeze in some picking because business trips usually have extra time to kill, and since I was out of the house already...

My favorite tool of the SLC sale is the May's Cotter pin puller. Never knew there was such a thing, but I know I'm never gonna pull a cotter pin with a screwdriver/pliers/hammer/swear words ever again :rocker:

The Indestro NIB set and all the Starrett stuff for pennies on the dollar was a close second.

I found an Steel Age "hybrid" file cabinet this afternoon awaiting bulk pickup. I call it a "hybrid" because it has 2 card catalog drawers at the top and 2 filing cabinet drawers below.

I was taken by the Art Deco touches on the label holders and thumb latches.

It's grimy with a few dents and some minor rust at the bottom. I don't know yet where it's going but it will stay for a while.

Cheers

Jim

Back for day two of a nearby estate sale and everything was 1/2 off.

Picture 1 is all the gun related stuff I thought I could use. Lead balls in various calibers, a couple boxes of rifle primers, a half full container of black powder, an old Colt handgun magazine, and some musket caps. The lead was all cheap at $1 per box and the powder was only $2. Primers 50 cents per box so everything was pretty low cost.
attachment.php

The other misc items from the house and garage included more hand wrenches at 50 cents each, a turkey call, NIB model of a Ford Explorer, a railroad spike and a bonus in with the lead balls was the "Worlds Greatest Beer Drinker" pin. Who doesn't need one of those?
attachment.php

Last item from the garage was this Craftsman vise that somehow did not sell. It was kind of buried with other less interesting junk so maybe why it was overlooked. $10 brings it home.

OK I went back to the place I got the Plvmb box from yesterday. The reason? he had a bunch of Plvmb/Proto tools his dad had "collected" over the years...

I'd asked about a package deal yesterday, but the number he tossed out was by my standards WAY too high, (and we hadn't' even really gone through them all yet, so I had no real clue how many there actually were. I had other places to go so I passed and asked about getting just the box (and the rest was as they say History)

Today I asked how much he'd sold and the answer: "I never really put them out after showing them to you..." :rocker:

so he gets me a box and I start digging. and digging, and digging....

I finish with two very full boxes, adn about half in a cardboard box, and all but maybe five I sifted through were Plvmb, with just a few Protos in with the keepers... (I did toss one Ford wrench into the keeper pile)

Very close to 200 tools plus or minus. AND a 5295 3/8 (I think ) tray style socket box.

All told, With what I already paid for the big box, I got them all for $200.

I don't think this doubles my Plvmb "Collection", but it comes close....

I didn't have time to do a big picture production, so here are some highlights:

the 5295 "as found"

attachment.php

attachment.php

The Cardboard box after the "inventory" - Yes that is a 3/4 drive ratchet down there, and yes the torque wrench is also Plvmb...

A cheap plastic box with mostly sockets and drive tools:

Wow guys, nice finds all around!

Jim, that file cab is actually really good for the shop I think; you can store a bunch of power tools in the big drawers, and the "accessories" in the card drawers...
