i just picked up a snap on qjfr275d torque wrench off kijiji for 40 bucks. i think i got a good deal considering the new equivalent is $339 from snap on. the date code determines its a 1984 but it must have been well taken care of because its in great shape!

He said $100, holy ****, I nearly **** out a kitten. I gave him the cash, and hauled it to the car. This is the best tool deal I think I have ever got at any yard or estate sale, ever.

It's at that point you almost have a quick look around and say, "I'll give you $X00 for everything if you lock the door now. I'll be back with a truck in 30 minutes..."

Work was delayed till noon on account of the weather, so after dropping off little man at daycare I went to kill some time. Parking lot was still pretty slick and they were shoveling snow out front. I usually go and pick through the socket and wrench trays but while doing a quick once over I saw some faded green and sure enough it was an SK 1/2 drive case with some sockets and an Armstrong ratchet. There was a random Craftsman in there, but it's at least USA. All for $15. I also grabbed a Williams and an older Craftsman spark plug socket.

Now I just need to piece the rest of it together. I'm just string the life long journey of tool collecting so this better then some cheaper options out there.

The fourth photo is a completed set that I found online.

I'm not a collector, so I may just offer up the case if someone is looking one.

I'm in the Los Angeles area also. If your looking for deals, I would recommend Craigslist and Estatesales.net. There's no big secret, you just pick a few sales that look good, map them out, and hit the road early. Sometimes you hit pay dirt, sometimes you get nothing. Once or twice a year I hit a right place/right time, and get an outrageous deal. When I'm not working on the weekends, I'm out the door early and hitting as many sales as I can, signing waiting lists, and hitting sales in between. It's very competitive, and I've even been known to knock on people's doors a day or two early if I see something I really like. Do this at your own risk, sometimes people get real pissed when I do this. I'm just a deal seeker/junk hound. I buy anything I think I can sell, whether I want it or not, if only to trade up to something I do want. I don't think I could make a living at it, or for that matter, I don't think I'd want to make a living at it, it would be a hustle, that's for sure. But I love doing it as a hobby.

Yeah LA area too. I agree with junktastic. Sometimes it's just timing. I remember a year and a half ago there were alot of retiring machinists selling their boxes with all their tools at pretty good prices (though I couldn't jump on them woooo being a college student) and now I haven't seen a deal like that in a long while.

Great haul. If you can't get the Silent Air compressor to work, I'll take it off your hands for the right price. They are here in Houston and can likely refurb it for much cheaper than a new one.

Saw the first three pics up on CL advertising a kerosene Revelation Amateur kiln.

Tonight, with owner's help, we struggled to get it up a steep/narrow basement steps and loaded in truck.

When got home and cleaning it up, found two breaks in the burner cap that fits under the kiln (pic 4 and shown with emphasis in pic 5).

Also one of the four legs had a break in it (pic 6 and with emphasis in pic 7).

Will work on trying to get things back in order, then go from there.

Couple days back, picked up a Globe Wernicke oak 2-drawer file card cabinet at a local thrift shop.

Had some veneer missing on just the top portion, so removed that veneer and fortunate oak was underneath. Stripped, stained and put finish on it, so only pics I have it after it was all done.

I gotta tell you, it's getting harder and harder for me to keep up with my friend Mike Paxton, especially since I need to be close to home to care for my wife, who's had surgery three times in the last two months. However, I'm still able to check in on the on-line auctions, and though the price paid is sometimes more than I would pay at an estate sale, I'm still able to pick up a few additions to the workshop. Here's some:

Have you ever been to the Pamona Swap Meet? It seems the guys on Roadkill find all manner of interesting cars, engines and related ****.

I don't get to LA often but Pamona is on my to-do list next time I do.

I have not been to Pomona in a while. Last time I was there, prices were outrageous, as with most of the swap meets and flea markets, sure, there is the occasional deal, but yard and estate sales is where I've made a real killing. I got all the furniture in my house from these things. A few weeks ago I found a stack of old USA made levi's in my size, barely worn, 5 buck a pair. Around a year ago I bought a 1982 Honda XL 250R with 3500 original miles for $200. I'm still riding it. I find all kids of stuff I use and wear at these things, and save a ton of money.

A year and a half ago I bought a Dillon 550 with 4 powder heads, 357&44mag die sets, 10,000 primers, 50 pounds of various powders, around 20,000 357 and 44 jacketed bullets, 50 pounds of assorted brass, all for $200 at a family doing their own estate sale. That one was advertised as "Estate Sale" on CL, no info, that was it. The son did not think anyone would want that stuff, so he did not bother listing it in the add.

Look in the trash too when the family is doing their own sale. They throw away better things than they try to sell most of the time.

Keep in mind though, I go to a LOT of these things when I'm free. 90% are complete washouts, 9% are OK, and 1% are home runs. When I factor in the time and gas for all the sales that ****, those deals might not be such great deals. I really just do it as a hobby. It's fun though, a treasure hunt basically. Give it a try. It's either something you are going to like doing, or it's not.

Bingo!!! I couldn't agree more. With a little planning/strategy you can optimize those percentages a tad but not by a whole lot.

Sailing is entertainment first and foremost.

I'd much rather be digging thru someone's pile of virgin junk then golfing, dinning out, going to the movies, going to the lodge, going to the ball game, etc, etc, etc.

Went to a junk store today looking for vises, Saw this gorgeous chest, solid wood (Cherry, walnut?). Opened it and there was the key and original locks. Asked how much, shop owner said $50. Took it and ran.

Bought this very odd Wilton last night. Chicago manufacture, no date stamp, 4.25" jaws (yes not 4.5 not 4", 4.25!) early jaws, original transitional swivel lock downs. Really in nice unmolested condition. $120

The vintage MAC XR8 I looked at several times before ,but was reluctant to buy because it skipped all over the place, plus they wanted $15 for it thinking it could be traded in. I finally took a chance and bought it for $10. Just needed a good clean and oil.

Stopped in at the local new and used junk store. Haggled of a few items with the owner... a tough cookie! Got talking about our military service and it seem to loosen him up a bit and got this old Ward's tool box with a set of 18 vintage Chrome Vanadium Ward's socket set, no ratchet... 6 hex drive Hinsdale sockets 1/4 Chrome Vanadium breaker bar and a pair of Snap-On sockets. The bottom of the box just had a bunch of junk in it . I gave 15.00 for the box and afterword he told me he made his money back just selling the ratchet...
I told him I would have given the 25 he was asking if it was still there ! LOL . Not really but I had to have a come back

Just had my hoardshack picked over by fellow GJ'r MR_P! Great guy and glad we got to meet. He picked up a cool craftsman drill box from an antique store while here in town and found a few things in my shop he liked so we traded. I got the cool box and I'll let him post his finds if he wants. Here is the box I got from him!

Craigslist score tonight. 50+ year old Ariens snowblower. Engine turns over with what feels like good compression but the clutch/transaxle or whatever drives the wheels is messed up.
I got it for $25.
I hope to restore it and put it back to use but even in the worst case, its full of hard to find obsolete parts that will keep my other vintage machine going. I have a nearly identical blower I restored last year so I couldnt resist buying this one.

I didn't have the spare cash when he listed it. I was the first caller and gave him a deposit shortly after then asked him to hold it a week, that was yesterday. He hit me up today telling me he had offers(of $600) for twice his asking price and it was going to be hard to wait much longer. When I brought him the money today he said he knew he listed it low but didn't realize how low until all the calls/offers started coming in and that I got the deal of the century. Stand up guy, he honored the deposit and handshake through the temptation and said he would have waited the full week we agreed on but he said it was tough will all the calls he received. He's building a hotrod and inquired about the upholstery so I will certainly hook him up with a nice discount when he's ready.

That will teach me to hold on to my madd money for better deals, I blew it on junk last week that comes around often thinking there were no upcoming garage sales to worry about. I wasn't even thinking about deals like this popping up...

Thanks guys, I'm pretty excited! It's just the wood version, no gearbox for metal cutting but I have a couple 3ph motors to try and plan to pick up a vfd to slow it down.

Now the dilemma, do I keep or sell the Craftsman 12" band saw I just restored....? I have a Delta 14" band saw with the metal cutting gearbox and it's the same Delta/Milwaukee logo as this 20" so I'll be keeping it for sure. I also have a Delta Rockwell heavy duty drill press and a couple other Delta tools that I'm partial to. The problem is I also have a full line of Craftsman power tools to match the band saw but who needs 3 band saws? I guess I could argue that they are all different sizes so I should keep them all.
