Top, my "big" one has 2-1/2" jaws. All are clamp on. Seen a bench mount here, and want one but...

Yeah, 3 maybe 3-1/2 or so seems to be the upper limit for these of the ones I've seen.

That one seems to be in very nice shape! a Carriage bolt should be good enough for the stud. What size? You should use one that is old, not a new plated one. I can check my old stock if you don't have one.

 Looks like I may need to modify the head of the bolt. I think a square head will work , it just needs to be larger. I don't want to damage the base of the vise with a bolt head too small.

I had to give too much for this one too. But they aren't falling out of tree's any more so.... I have walked away from deals before and wish I hadn't later. I plan to get years of enjoyment out of it so it's a small price to pay for that.
I have been messing with a japanning mix. I have a ways to go with the formula yet but when I get it right this may be the first candidate.

Yeah, definitely the square head. What size is it? and do you have one long enough?

1/2" x 3" .. x 4" would be better with full thread to accommodate thinner bench's without requiring extra hardware . I'm just not sure the head on this square bolt is big enough. I dig around in some other boxes and see what else I have rat holed.

Main nut from a vise :dunno: It was free and could save one some where so couldn't leave it. I asked where the rest was...lol

Does that say D43 and 4B on it? Probably for a Columbian D43 utility vise. Oddly enough I found a D43 1/2 4B main nut in a tool box I bought last week.

Possible, but unlikely. Getting the temper of the steel correct on a puller of this type would make the job too daunting for even the most seasoned of fabricator. If it is unmarked, it is most likely out of a kit of Chinese origin.

However, if you got this along with 5 quarts of ... motor oil?!? ... then you got a "you ****" deal!

Went to Cathlamet Washington for a tool sale. The guy had a nice stash of dismantled band saws, table saws, drill presses, he even had a printing press. Lots of commercial tools and vises.

View media item 57777
This is my haul for the day. My wife scored the wooden boxes and the guy dumped out the lathe bits for someone else to pick up.

View media item 57776
The band saw bases were 15 bucks apiece they are just a nice slab of wood away from being end tables.

The last two are for the drooling vise freaks on the net.

Dittlefart,

Glad someone from the GJ community made it to this sale. Drives and I have been talking about this guy for the past 10 days or so as he had listed the vises on CL prior to having the big tool sale. Neither one of us could make it out there and in some ways, I'm glad I couldn't! Great items!

Been picking up some tools from my local pawn shops and also a flea market that started up. Can't wait for the swap meet this year but in the mean time this will hold me over:rocker:

Pawn shop for $6. Includes 2 mac impact sockets, snappy deep 1/2 socket and terminal puller. It has no brand on it?? Also scored this plvmb 1/2 extension :rocker:

Scored these pliers for $10 from the flea market. Guy said his pliers where high priced and wondered how many I wanted at $2.50 each. Sign me up for 3 pairs of real vise grips and a set of offset channel locks:rocker:

Another flea market vendor- 2 proto wrenches, plvmb tappet wrench and proto l.a. 3/8ths breaker bar. Lady wanted to charge me 25 cents for all but I felt bad and gave her $1.

Smoke, Nice score! Does the Breaker have the drive socket in the end of the handle?

I think your term puller needs its block to the inside of the jaws.

Had a good day today. bought axes and an axe head. Axe with paint on the handle is a Collins in original shape, axe head is a Bigelow. Pd $35 for all three.

Bought this cool little homemade vise, Pd 10

Bought this Stubbs saw by Bennet. pd $30 because I like it.

Bought this entire collection of wire wheels and stones and burring tools, all West German made, pd $15.

At Jake's insistence bought this 3/4" drive socket, the perfect thing for removing those slotted base bolts!

Merc and I just got back with the saw from two weeks ago. It's home safe, now I just need to make room for it. Before anyone asks, Merc is the beneficiary if anything goes wrong and I lose a finger, hand or arm in this machine. The pic does not do justice, it's freakin HUGE, I will get a pic standing next to it later.

After a couple stellar weekends, alas, this weekend was an absolute bust. It was a parade of broken kids toys, baby clothes, and worthless junk.

All those great pix, and not a ruler in a single one!! So, spill! How big is it?? I thought I had every Colton size, 1" - 3", but yours looks like it might be bigger. The biggest of my clamp-ons is 2 1/2", but I also have one that appears to be just like yours, and it's a 3 incher. Alas, I didn't get the fancy wingnut with mine. Keeping my eyes open for something suitable in anteekie shops.

Yeah It's the George Colton patent of 16 june 1885. Most of the unmarked ones I've ever come across like this one I call Phoenix ... HB and Colton usually have there name on there's .
I have just never seen one so large. Every one I've had or seen before were bench clamp or a combination clamp/screw.. Just how big were these made? Or what's the largest you have seen? :dunno:

Bob, what widths do you have? They made those in so many incremental odd widths...

Hey, Outlaw
I've found five Model Numbers stamped on the end of the leadscrew: 1 1/2, 2 1/2, 2 3/4, 3 1/2, and 4 1/2. These correspond to jaw widths, respectively, 1", 1 1/2", 1 3/4", 2", and 2 1/2". In the duplicates I have, the actual dimensions are pretty close with one exception. I have two Model 2 3/4 that have jaw widths that are 1/8" different. One is 1 3/4" and the other is only 1 5/8". The overall height, not counting the clamp screw differs by 1/4". The smaller one is branded Phoenix. I think that's attributable to casting variations- there is a much greater difference in overall size and weight between the smaller one and the Model 2 1/2's than between my two Model 2 3/4's. It looks to me like there were only five sizes made - at least on purpose! Some may have been made by using a vise for the pattern instead of the original pattern, and that always results in a smaller piece.
You probably have a bigger sample than my 10 examples - what have you found?
Undersized jaws can also be caused by truing them up by grinding. I do this very gingerly, but it still makes 'em a little bit smaller!
Fascinating little tools!

**This is only the clamp-ons. I just have (and have only heard of) the one 3" stud-mount. Mine either has no leadscrew stamp, or it has been beaten and rusted away.

This one I picked up has "10" stamped on the end of the lead screw. ?

Hmmmm, I never noticed that or forgot if I did...

Bigest to smallest:

4-1/2, 2-3/4, 2-1/? (obliterated or mis-stamped)

Maybe the opening width? :dunno:

That Foote-Burt drill press looks in great condition.

Only saw one posted up on Vintage Machinery and doesn't seem to have all the nice things you have on yours. See link to it below.

Love to see more pics and if you get a chance, a short video to see how it operates.

Mike
Thanks Mike. That's the same and only link was able to find. Not much info out there on them. It's in really good shape and everything works really smooth. Hopefully it stays that way when I reassemble it. I'll definitely post more pics once it's home and in place.

No it does not, I have a plvmb one that does but this one is a proto l.a. so it is a bit after that. The puller block is spring loaded so you can easily put it back in the jaws!

While my last post had some nice items, but not at super deals, the next deal was straight-up lucky.

I answered a CL ad for a "couple of toolboxes with tools". I saw the Craftsman "Rally" box and thought I'd take a chance.

Here are the CL photos.

Pic 1: Older Chinese 1/2" drive socket set with breaker bar. No ratchet.

Brian

Continuing on from Friday, I got to sift through the last two toolboxes on Sunday. Just remember - this was all a part of one purchase for $25.
