What kind of wood is it?

The lanes that I've bowled on over the years have had maple for the approach and first ~10' of the lane. After that it's yellow pine.

Maple would be the holy grail, but yellow pine would be useful too.

That's the way most lanes are built the maple for all those ball droppers out there. Then the pine where the ball is rolling.

In case any of us should fall upon a deal like you had, can you describe what you had to do to remove the bowling lanes?

Mike

It is held down in place with stainless slotted screw. Impact driver easily removed them but I did break a couple tips so have plenty. Then just get a square line and cut. Don't try to do like others there were doing and cut the entire 2-14" thickness. Make it in 3 cuts . Don't remove any supports from the bottom or it will open up like and accordion . Each piece is toe nailed at the bottom every couple feet. Once you figure out where you'll miss nearly every nail. After that it's about 50 pounds a foot so be ready for some work . There was only the two of us so we didn't cut any longer than 16" . It's all we could handle by hand. We used a sheet rock cart to move it out. Oh and make sure you start at the pen end....lol a couple of real dummies found that out the real hard way. It was way worth it. If I could have got off work I would have bought all 32 lanes at that price!

The first 16' is maple as is the 20' of approach the rest is fir I believe. The maple is 2-1/4 to 2/1/2 the fir is 2" .

Picked up a Craftman 6517 toolbox off craigslist for $25. It's in pretty good shape, but didn't come with the tray. Then I wen to my uncle's house and help him with his car and he gave me a Craftman 6500 box and some unknown red toolbox that looks to be from the same manufacturer.

6517, Carpenters tool box......picked one up last week, nice,

KZ

Thanks. Had to go back to your post last week. Yours is in great shape. ::thumbup:
Do you know what the thing in the left corner of the lid is for?

EDIT: Found the answer in the crowntop thread.

6517 Carpenters box. This box is later, the wood saw holder inside has two slots, earlier ones held four saws. There is a slot for a sqaure to stick up through the top of the box.

Picked up this Kennedy 520 machinist box at the flea market today to restore for $10

I know Kennedy made military contract boxes with a gray finish.

But when did they use the round knobs???

Do you know what the thing in the left corner of the lid is for?

EDIT: Found the answer in the crowntop thread.

On the front left corner of the lid, there is a "punch out", that will allow for a full size, framing, carpenters square. Mine is not punched out and I'm going to leave it that way. Also...the two holes on the lid in front and behind the handle are for securing a small, maybe 1 in. x 1 in. block of wood that comes with the box. The piece of wood has two slits in it to allow storage for handsaws.

Although not popular with carpenters as Mr. Outlaw said earlier, I think they are cool. Good find and I think you got a good deal. :thumb:

Clamps are most certainly made by someone studying to be a machinist. I have a pair I made in school with my initials and the date, and another pair I bought at a sale also initialed and dated.

Today started out pretty well. Picked up a Lista / Vidmar type box with tools. It's a beast and despite the interesting paint job everything functions perfectly. After two people picking a few items out, I'm into the box and tools $210. The tools are a mix of USA and foreign. The foreign tools will be garage sale fodder but the USA stuff includes some Matco, Mac, Snap On, Craftsman, Knipex items among others. I'm going to pick out some things I'll keep and try to get closer to breaking even on the deal. Based on the pictures, can anybody tell me if this is a Vidmar, Lista, or other type of cabinet? If not I'll post another thread elsewhere.

And yeah, the paint job isn't exactly what I'd choose but it's actually grown on me since I first saw it. It will likely be left as is.

And then the day got much, much better. I was winding down for the day and saw somebody posted an "Old wood lathe" on Craiglist for $1. The description said that it was actually free, but he preferred to put it in the tools section and had to put a price. I was the first to respond and headed over to grab it. Once I got there, we got to talking about things and in addition to the free lathe, he offered me three working electric motors (one with a water pump), a huge homemade cherry picker, a nice homemade engine stand, and a PowerMatic 50 that appeared to be in working condition. Again, all for free! I was about to pinch myself until I finally found something that wasn't free or for sale, a metal cutting band saw.

I already had the box previously posted in my truck so all I could fit was the lathe and motors. I'm going back tomorrow or Saturday to pick up the remaining items with a trailer. The backstory is that the gentleman is selling the house and is trying to downsize his existing equipment that he doesn't use and other projects, so he's eager to move these. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Thanks for describing how you took apart by section the bowling lane that your buddy and you acquired.

The process you used would have made for a great short video, as I haven't found another video showing in detail the dismantling procedure.

BTW, I'd have been guilty of starting at the wrong end versus the pin end, without seeing your advise!!!

Only hit 2 sales yesterday, not much going on this weekend.

1st one picked up a Sears USA square, drill box with various bits and a Duplex plastic drill bit stand and a General plane blade sharpener. Also picked up 3 Shreveport Steamer stadium cushions, a local 1970's World Football League team that only lasted one year.
$16 total

2nd sale only thing I found was a near new 10 x 20 silver tarp for $10. No picture use your imagination LOL.

Interesting followup on Monday I was checking Craigslist Wanted section and a guy was looking for Shreveport Steamer items because his dad was on the team. Sold all three to him for $20 plus shipping and he was very happy with the condition on them.

Merc - That is just a sick haul. I'm so jealous!

Bluebolt - I LOVE hearing stories about odd items being saved and passed on to the perfect caretaker. Major Karma points on your scoresheet.

No good listings for me this weekend (yet), and the motor I got for the TS last weekend turned out to be the wrong RPM (silly me). It will get saved for a future project, if one comes along.

Good hunting to you all, and I look forward to seeing all your great finds.

Yes Merc ***** hard on that Vidmar, it's been posted for a while and price adjusted a few times so he finally jumped on it. After hearing the size, I'm kicking myself for not jumping on it myself. The CL ad made it look like a 24-32" height box, Merc said it's about 4' tall or so.

I knew someone would know what it was if you posted the slides and drawers inside/out.

Got this Waterloo tool box for $7.50 with the cheap sockets and the top! I was a little bad and i threw in the driver, wrenches, and ratchet in the box because i thought the driver had no price so i thought now i found out it said $14 opps and the misc wrenches and craftsman ratchet was in a box full of misc sockets and they wanted $16 for and i just wanted those! I didn't feel as bad when i found out after i paid she overcharged me $10 so let that be a lesson and always double check the prices and don't trust the staff to add right!
