Went to a big flea market this morning. Picked up some new casters for the 1980 Craftsman box I picked up a few weeks ago. These are an exact match to the ones my 2007 box came with, so now both bottom boxes will be the same level. Paid $20 for the set.

1st stop yesterday. craigslist find. Kinda always wanted one simply to play and think I found a winner. Craftsman 113.28000 lathe, duplicator for same and the original stand.

$200 -- if I got beat up, let me know. When it came with the original gouges and what appears to be every attachment I could see in the books, I was sold.

3 weAks of 7- 12's ended today with just an 8 hour day and just in time to stumble into a large 4 day estate sale at the last minute. Most of the tools were **** india stuff. But I did buy one old box of junk for 2.50. In the box was a few S-K and Craftsman sockets and such , a cool old claw hammer with an octagon handle, Klein 16' tape, A nut cracker that's a pair of women's legs.... and a pair of old bottle/ beer can openers, one is a PBR with a 1935 patent the other is Muehlebach beer.
But the real find wasn't at the sale but I ran into a lady that had a sale last month and had 3 old copper fire extinguishers. 2 had been turned into lamps.... I wasn't interested. The 3rd was being used for plastic flowers. She had it listed for 150.00....nuts. Last day she had came down to seventy five. I offered 45 and she walked away. Well I had asked her if she still had it or did it sell? She said it didn't sell. I told my offer was still good, 45. I told her it would be worth more if it had the top. She said she had it some where but couldn't find it. Long story short I worked the deal to 45 and if she finds the top I'll pay another twenty. Now I buy lots of off the wall junk sometimes but I happen to have a top for this thing already so I just scored a copper extinguisher for 45 bucks . It needs a lil solder work but these things sell well restored and at that price I have some wiggle room to work it over.

Oh also picked an old hand cultivator for 2 bucks. Total 49.50

Top, you can do more thst just restore that Fire extingusher if the inside can be cleaned adequately - Second half of this blog:

http://outlawscampingblog.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2015-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&updated-max=2016-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&max-results=2

I have a buddy that owns 2 old fire trucks and runs 6 fire departments. He goes crazy over this stuff restored. I've done a number of items for him including fire axes and brass fixtures. This is counted as sold already!

I;d say you did well!
with the bench, the tools, and all the attachments,
wondering did you get a chuck with it?
You will like turning.
i do some, not a lot, but it is enjoyable.
don't get too upset, when you have a bowl looking good, nice wood, nice shape, last finishing cut, and BAM!!! It blows up, and sails across the room.
because it will happen...............
Tip, if you get a bow looking good, and go too deep, and put a hole in the bottom, turn a plug and glue it in, and continue turning.
see example below.

I don't know what part of Montana you live in but I'd imagine it's not as easy for you to find good used tools as many of the rest of us. That said, I'd say you didn't get a bargain, but you didn't get beat up either. That same setup (with stand and gouges) would sell for $100-$150 here in Portland, depending on condition.

Grats!

I live in one of the larger counties, but low on population. Gotta love the Big Sky!

I did not get a chuck - where/what do I ask for?

Got a few blanks with it, both bowls and spindles. If the woman wasn't dragging me off to WY for a day or two I'd be blowing **** up today.

Sharpening - any tricks I should know?

Thanks fellas.

LOL! Saying you live in "one of the larger counties" in Montana, is akin to saying you live in "one of the larger oceans". I have a lot of family in NE Montana. It's a looong drive across that state to get to them ...

I live in NW MT. I know about the lack of tools to buy and near impossible to sell. You did well I'd say for MT. I never see vises come up for sale except the cheap ones.

Woman wants me to pack up and move to Bozeman and sell out here. Family ranch and all that entails await me. She's basically gone now, I've just gotta make up my mind for the move - or not.

I'm in the eastern half, county I live is just over 5,000 sq miles with population normally under 10K. Its getting somewhat crowded. Drive for blue jeans is just at 45 miles. However, there is a functioning town within 5 miles so its not like I live in the boonies. Just have lost a number of businesses like all small towns.

Tools are normally high in price, committed competition and some folk with no sense of pricing. Once in a while you score, mostly I watch this thread and get a serious case of tool envy. The vises and anvils are out there, just never when I'm present.

Picked up this Clarke 6in bench grinder for $15 with the two stones. He wanted $20 and i offered $10 and we settled on $15. It isn't nothing to fancy but until i can score a deal on a better one $15 is fine for this one. I don't think i will be doing to much these next two weeks because i had to get a new truck since mine died so i don't have as much money.

My dad got me a pair of hammers from an estate sale. Anbody recognize the symbol on the planishing hammer? It's a "C.D." on what seems to be a three point crown.

something like these, have to make sure you get the right center adaptor for your lathe spindle.
is it threaded, or a plain 5/8" shaft?
EDIT
Craft supply has $4.95 shipping till the 23rd. of march.

Long C Craftsman Pin Punch sets

I got these pin punch sets at an auction for $11.

Would anyone know exactly how old they are (1933-1949 I'm assuming from the logo).

They are in pretty good shape, only 2 of the nine seem to have been used at all.

According to the Craftsman Date Code thread -
G-circle = unknown U.S. manu. ca. 1949 - 1964 (as late as 1973 on ripping chisels)

The underline-C logo would place them in the late 40's.

nice, is the one in the 2nd. picture bent, or is it just the picture?
I'll bet it's some good metal back then.

^Cool find on the Rebuilt stamp ratchet.

These are my finds from the estate sale last Saturday morning before the hoarder mess.

Mostly Mac, some S-K Craftsman, Snap On, Lisle and others. I was about to leave when I spotted the MAC pry bar set in the hanging rack attached to a wall. Got it for $10 with some other items.

All in all , spent around $60 there.

Today's estate sale finds:

Action Thorsen Socket set, Crescent 1/4 Socket set box, Hammers: Champion farriers hammer, Stanley Nailmaster, Channellock ball peen, Chisels: Stanley, Witherby, others yet to be cleaned off, Starrett punch, Osborne punches, Chrome X battery wrench.

I definitely think this Stanley Nailmaster hammer is unique. It has a chrome beam built like a wrench beam.

Spent around $30.

Picked up this lil' bench grinder. All data plates are missing . 220 volt. 12" wheels. It takes about 5 minutes after turning it off for it to stop spinning. With the tool stand it's tipping the scales about 350 pounds . It need some cleaning and some welding on the guards but you can't beat free....

Wow, that caught my eye; that looks to be the EXACT blue paint I used to paint my tools with to mark them "mine!"...

That paint hasn't been available for a couple of decades AFAIK...

And no, I'm not claiming them; I never had a pair of VG's go missing... (But I could lie if you wanted me to... )

Hello fellow Montanan's, I'm close to Bozeman in the sw part of the state. It's growing a ton around here, I'm not quite sure where everyone is moving from or what they are doing for work. One thing I do know is that they are quite proud of anything that they are selling. I score a deal about once every two or three months. Got a delta 40-440 24 inch scroll saw 1971 manufacture for $80 about a month ago. I've been looking for over a year all around here. That's the last score I got anyways.

BIG TOOLS & MACHINERY ESTATE SALE -
http://nh.craigslist.org/gms/5497844112.html

I won't make it to this one--maybe Bobcat or Jake will report finds...

Damn, I missed that listing. It's a bit too far out of my range for me anyways. I'm already trapped at the house for the rest of the day. I'll have to see if I can make arrangements (beg my sister for a deal) for tomorrow morning.

The two sales near me this morning were both a bust.

Yeah I'm sure it has a serious draw during start up... Not sure how much I'll really use is but I wasn't about to let it go to scrap. The place was scrapping it so I offered scrap price and they said I could just have it! I had a crane to load it ... not to unload :eyecrazy: I had to separate it from the tool stand and was still all I wanted.
