Cody, since you asked...

I don't see anything there I would have paid $80 for. I would probably have passed on all of it, even at 1/4 that price. If you didn't have a toolbox or vise, then 1/4 would have been about right. But for me, I've got all those things and am usually buying name brand American-made items to upgrade or resell.

In the end, it's whatever floats your own boat. If you've got the cash to spare and enjoy the hunt, have at it!

I think at $20 your being way to cheap! I might have paid more then i want to but i know i can sell the stuff i don't want and make a profit and still get to keep a lot of it. Hell i can probably sell the vice for more then $20 easy.

I am admittedly a cheap *******. Good luck selling your items (and I mean that in all sincerity).

Also these two leather electricians tool bags. One is clc and one is klein and they should be worth at least $20.

I had 20 minutes on my way to the airport. The ReStore was a bust, but the nearby Pawn Shop yielded a Craftsman magnesium pneumatic brad nailer with a big "BROKEN" sticker on it for $10. I'm admittedly taking a chance, but maybe...

Next stop is a day near St Louis. This one's looking bleak--not a lot near where I'll be.
Day 2, City 2: With an hour to get dinner, and computer work beckoning back at the hotel room, I limited myself to a 20-minute run through a big antique mall just before closing time. 3-second scans of over a hundred vendor stalls turned up these the finds.

Thorsen 5/8" ignition DBE wrench
Channellock 420 pliers from the "Champion DeArment" era (1950s?).
Bernard sewing/belt pliers, made by W. Scholihorn

I'd never seen one of these before, so I bought it.

I paid $15.40 for the three, more than I would have at an estate sale, but not bad for an antique mall.

Picked up a few things today at a sale, with a couple that I plan to keep.

First pic is a Vigor Double Spindle Polisher/Dust Collector Made in USA and model # DC-2025 with some accessories.

Second pic is a bb pistol, all metal and a Marksman Repeater from Huntington Beach CA.

Third pic is a metal revolving stool that can be as low as 17 inches or as high as 25 inches. The round metal seat is heavy, making the whole stool weigh in at around 20 lbs.

Fourth pic is a Ken Tool for bead breaking tire tool and #T-200. Made in Akron OH

Fifth Pic is Crescent Bridgeport Nail Puller #56

Sixth pic is a Singer Cast Iron base for pedal sewing machine

Seventh pic is one of a pair of small vises that got today, with the one pictured being a Wilton with 5 inch jaws and Made in USA, while not pictured was a Littlestown #112 with 3-1/3 jaws.

Nice day to be out and to get them cleaned up as well.

Mike

You were holding back on us, Cody! I retract my earlier dismissive judgment. You could break even on that pile of goodies, and maybe even come out ahead. I think you're right about the work involved, however.

Wow, you got a really nice selection of different goodies. That Singer cast iron base is begging for a nice table top and you can sell that for big bucks. Well done.

Todays trip to the pawn shop. nothing exciting - 23 if memory is right for $2.00

I don't often look thru the socket table there since its only full of ****, but today I was burning some time. Found a 15/32" in 1/4" drive that has no marks except the size. I've never seen a socket in this size. Anyone?

Bill

Cody, the columbian VSO is China, so don't compare it to a real vise... not even with the same name... i won't take these for free. people ask for $70 to a couple hundred? they might find a sucker (PT Barnum said it...) but you can get a brand new china vise for 50-70 at HF? :dunno:

I think a used one is MAYBE $20 and thats if you are desperate for anything...

you best score of the day IMO is the circular saw. :dunno:

It's a model #D6. It's essentially the same as a new Craftsman 6" vise ($80), so half that and figure on $40+/- as a starting point.

Mike! Nice finds! I like the Singer stand (I'd be thinking treadle powered jig saw...), and the bead breaker, (you have to show that one in an action shot as I can't figure how it would work...)

Careful where you wave the BB gun; its too "real" looking...

outlaw, pic #3 sucked. Looks like I was going thru the dt's.

Wait, I've already done that, so I evidently wasn't very steady.

Hi, Topop. Next stop is Salt Lake City, then Seattle. Four states in five days, but not a lot of time in each state outside meetings and getting to/from the airport. There's an estate sale outside Tacoma on Friday that looks promising.

 Good Luck! Fun to watch . I wish I knew you where headed to st. louis before hand. There's an old collector there I picked on a few times on my trips across the state. And in Piedmont ,Ok there's another. I don't know of any in your other destinations....

One important thing to remember... It's not how you sell , it's how you buy! We have all (ME) paid too much one time or another.

It's how we learn. Experience is the best teacher so I look at the losses as if I just paid tuition for a class and I learn what does not work.
Like you said it will take some work to to sell it all but that's part of the game too.

It will come to you in time what to pass up on. I used to grab all I could get my hands on, then came the day I could not get in my garage. It was filled with too much hard/impossible to unload stuff. I even took it all to the Flea Market and had it at free or give away prices and came home with most of it. Next step was the scrap yard and recycling center Scrapping and recycling all the stuff I paid for was a very good lesson and I got my garage back.

I be bewildered as well.

I am pretty much at that point already  I can barley get in my garage to work now and i add more and more every week. I am trying to unload most of it tho and will probably have a garage sale this spring to get rid of most of the smalls.

Heading out on a multi-state trip for work this week. My goal is to pick up something in every city I visit, as I head to and from the airports. The abiding parameters here are the finds must be transportable on an airplane, or easy to mail home to myself.

First stop--under 24 hrs in Oklahoma City, OK.

I've this when traveling, it's a challenge when flying though.
My best was when I found a tool salvage in San Antonio. They had tons of tools from the military. And of course, they had great deals on brass hammers and clamps. I was lucky I was flying SW that time, as it didn't cost extra to check a second bag and the limit I think was 75 lbs at the time.
I bought so much, I suspected I was over and bought a medium army duffle and had to move some of the tools into at the check in.
Good luck with your lond distance buys and fly safe.

Bill just to further muddy the water, I've not seen a 15/32 in ANY drive size. zero, zilch...

!3, 15, 3,27, 29... Nada... (out of well over 1300 sockets...)

I didn't feel like wasting my time going when i didn't see one thing in the pics that would make me think there were tools. Plus i was pretty strapped for cash then and if there were tools there i wouldn't have enough to buy them all anyway

Yeah, I really don't blame you. No pics and when they list "vintage snap on," they are either asking too much (likely) or don't know wtf they are talking about and asking too much (more likely).

Thanks! I'm actually about 30 min outside of St Louis, and busy with meetings all day, so not much time to scrounge. I could be back here in the near future, however, so next time I'll hit you up for your contact.

I've got some of the weird older sizes - 29/32, 25/32 - and whatever I don't remember.

I've just never heard of this size and hoping someone can possibly shed a little light.

I keep looking for old treadle lathe's and scroll saws. Haven't found one yet in the wild, but it is a quest item for sure.

Thought I might find a video of someone using the Ken Tool T-200 to do bead breaking on a tire, but no luck. However, did include the rest of the pics I had of it, so hope that helps.

Rmalkow2:

I normally stay with old WW tools, but not a lot of that was at the sale, so had to look around to see if could justify my trip.

Someone had transferred a table top from a broken table onto the Singer base, but didn't proportion it to look right.

Did find two breaks in cast iron near bottom on Singer base, so it may need a weld/brazing to take it to next step. I'll include pic of location of those two breaks as an FYI.

Outlawmws:

Your right, as the Marksman Repeater BB pistol was made in Huntington Beach CA, which think places it around the 1990's era.

With that metal finish, it wouldn't be one to wave around.

BTW, it still shoots bb's with a lot of power, so may keep it for target practice.

Some great finds there guys!

I hit a big tool sale last weekend. Didn't get there early but still found some cool things. Prices were cheap and I made a pile of stuff.

Spent around $10-15

I know that this isn't a tool, but I'll explain why I posted it as I go.

Picked up this corner hutch from my grandmother today after a 25yr "Take it / Don't take it" game of roundabout. The cabinet was made by her father for my great-grandmother, around 90yrs ago from reclaimed hard pine tongue and groove floorboards, after their first house burned down (the first of 3 fires that this wood survived). Its 86" tall by 46" wide and only 17" deep. Even the nails were reclaimed (no screws). The door hardware was changed out in the 60's. This thing has survived generations of my family, I'm just the latest custodian. Because of the old growth pine, its heavier than it looks.

So, why am I posting this in a tool forum ?
The hutch was built entirely with basic handtools by a man who could only afford the essentials. No power tool has ever touched this wood, even the mill was powered by water.

We love our vintage tools and our cool new shop toys, but there was once a time when all that was available were the very basics. Next time you're out hunting, don't forget to take a little time to acknowledge the simple tools abandoned in the corners, or left in the dirt.

(The cabinet is in my garage, because I'm still not sure if my ceilings are tall enough for it yet) :lol_hitti
