The first leg of my run this morning was for 3 yard sales. The first was mostly common stuff and a lot of junk. The second lied about having tools. And the third turned out to be an estate sale from a few weeks ago that was a bust, so I didn't bother stopping.

Fortunately, between stop 2 and 3 there were 2 TOO's. The first one was unfindable in the maze of roads, but it led me to the signs for the second one. At that one I spent $15 for a Plano double rifle case.

I just inherited what we always called "Dad's squirrel gun" and needed to lock it away from my sisters toddler. I just had to put the gun in the picture. My Grandfather was given the gun when he was 13. It's a 1934/35 Winchester model 67-22 Short (Long-Long) bolt action rifle. (I can tell you from experience that grey squirrels are easy, but chipmunks waste a lot of ammo.)

Leg 2 in another post :

That case was a good find. However, storing a gun in any case is not recommended because the interior of a case attracts moisture, and the gun rusts and pits. A trigger lock or an inexpensive metal gun cabinet might be a better solution.

So a report back on one of the free "rust bucket" items from last week, turns out to be a cool and collectible item:

It started like this:

attachment.php

And finished like this:

attachment.php

And is in fact a bar tool can/bottle opener, with a hidden cork screw hidden inside the handle of the Ice/Mountaineering axe handle. I'd guess the pick and adz can be used on bar ice too.

attachment.php

Seems to be collectable also! Old Eprey listing:

THE LOCAL FLEA MARKET OPENED TODAY !!!! :willy_nil
THE LOCAL FLEA MARKET OPENED TODAY !! :rocker:
The local flea market opened today. ;)
I found nothing. :(

Before going to the FM, I went to an estate sale for a landscaper who had passed. It was run by the siblings. The brothers were trying to sell everything, cheap. The sister was telling everyone to get out of the house. It was very uncomfortable. I was hoping to find a Brush Hog, but they didn't have one. The toolboxes were beat to death, and filled with old Craftsman and cheap imports. I left it all behind to get away from the sister. On the way out I grabbed two items out of a bucket and went to the furthest brother for pricing. $3 and I was out of there.

For $1.50ea, I got :
Armstrong 78-410 10" *********** c-clamp ($66-$99 retail)
Simplex 60mm 3.5lb dual face mallet ($85-$150 retail)

I should have picked up more, but I just had to leave.
(my grandmother is doing the same thing as that sister, and I can only deal with one at a time)

Only one garage sale in town that I could stop at on my way to something else, and I walked away with nuttin'. There was only a small Park tool box with a few misc wrenches and sockets, all DOEs or combos. Even at $20 for the whole thing, I said thanks, but no.

Lots of great finds this weekend from the rest of you--congrats, gang!

Thought I started out good this morning with a quick walk around the flea market and found the Snap On slide hammer for $20, little did I know what the rest of the day would bring. Few hours later I checked Craigslist and saw a Taco cart that the guy puts up every few months for way too much money, last ad I saw it was listed for $1800, today it was $500. Guy sold his condo and had to get it out now. Then on the way home went through a very affluent town that was having their once a year big garbage day and found the RTI coolant exchanger for free, guy had to move his Ferrari for us to back our truck in to pick up what we wanted. So all in all I'd say we had a decent day, slide hammer, taco cart and coolant exchanger all for $520. O yea only got the taco cart not the small top box he had on it, but ain't complaining

My little swap meet haul:

Mostly Proto, with a sprinkling of others, '50's Armstrong swivel, old woodie driver, 1/2" chassie punch, P&C ratchet, EveryReady amp meter, and Proto Saltus, Metric, chevron and Whitworth wrenches. About $20 all together. Not bad for rainy day swaps.

Jake - I saw that sale on Craigslist, Looked like it was going to be a cluster. If you're looking for a brush hog I have a Gravely that needs a new home if your interested.

Got these tools from a CL ad, I picked them from a pile of randomness and asked the price, he said to make an offer so I said $20... I offered too much, he quickly accepted... :willy_nil He supposedly has a lead on a few other things I'm after so I didn't bother to bust his balls too bad.

And my personal favorite and best score in weeks, this school auction hardwood butcher block woodworking table. Merc bought a few vises off a guy and got the table free, which he brought to me. Thanks again Merc!
img_2395.jpg

EDIT, here is one on ebay that has been "professionally" refinished, same exact size/model.

Got some hammers for $10--rock hammer, 3, 5, 8 and 10 lbs. Also a free wen wet wheel. The pump on the wheel was shot, looks like the rubber had hardened and cracked. It must be very common. I found a youtube vid showing exactly the same problem. The replacement part is available at searspartsdirect for $35. In the middle of searching this site now for alternatives. Rest of it works fine though.

Small flat of tools from a pick tonight Merc turned me on to. I wish we went a few days earlier when the ads first started appearing, we got some nice things. I spent $30 after negotiations, Williams top, Craftsman, Mac, Snap On and a couple taps.

Found a couple of cool things this weekend. The Williams set is not complete but it's a cool 40s era tool I couldn't pass on. Paid $5 for the files and brush, $25 for the Williams set.

Plomb Chisel and Plomb Center Punch. 2$ the big one is about 1" x12"!
The center punch is one of the older ones ive seen, The "O" in Plomb was a normal O instead of upside down triangle.

Yesterday was a blast guys! I went to a house clean out sale at a hoarder house. Two guys have been working on this place for a while and opened up to sell to the public last weekend. They were doing fill a box with whatever for $5!

I was there for 2 hours rummaging and digging. I stopped at the flea afterward and was showing my haul to two buddies and they immediately wanted to go there. We hopped in our three vehicles and they followed me back over for 2 more hours of digging and fun!

Took a few pictures of the only lit basement room! This place was nuts. Heaping piles of junk 4 feet high at some point, we weren't even touching the floor anywhere in this room! What happened was the water main broke and every wood, metal, cardboard container in this room rotted . The room then got ripped to shreds by the first customers. Broken glass and rusty metal everywhere.

I swear I dreamt this before. The three of us flea buddies side by side digging through a massive hoard. It was great. I can't imagine what was in this house before the clean out started. There were hundreds of old glass bottles and China pieces. Apparently they already sold 1,000 blue mason jars to a decorator.

Some crappy cell pics:
How did you get my Girlfriends garage on there...................LOL:lol_hitti
I thought it was one of a kind.

That is called "perfect handle". I have a few and would like more. They could well be "perfect". They fit my hand very well and are a joy to use.

Bubinga:

Perfect handle screw driver.

Lots of different makers of them from very small to very large, but they all seem to feel better to the hand when working with them.

Damn, Nine, you find the coolest stuff. Been following your restoration thread and you do some amazing work! The toolbox and lamp you covered with old magazine clippings is one of the coolest things I've seen on GJ.
