Lots of nice scores guys!:thumbup::thumbup:

Sort of quiet and a lot of back and forth driving to hit the early one then as they opened, (7:30, 2 @ 8 8:30 then 9...)

I'm headed back out for a couple more in a bit, ans revisiting the first one (they weren't done setting up, and the floor show wasn't bad either...

Stop one; for $15 I got:

A mail scale, I guess the nearest 1/2 oz was considered "good enough", an old stapler, 2 Ronson lighter/cigarette cases - I don't smoke but they are cool none the less. An ornate brass hose bibb valve, and some antique insulators - The blue one is Corwinco, and the lady told me it was dug up in SF about 4 years ago, along with a mammoth? (obviously not in the same layer...)

attachment.php

12 LG Vise Grips (first pair like this) 2 Utica pliers a cool old small oxy/acet torch, a toy hammer and Bernard parallel grip pliers.

attachment.php

second stop (one "stop" was not there...)

A new/clean brush, a slightly used parts brush, Proto 12 in 3-8 ext, a pencil bundle, a Makita bit driver, and a General Numbed bit index. the large drill holder rack is cast, and embossed the other labels are also embossed.

A Lane cedar box & wall hook-cup holder that caught my fancy. $2

attachment.php

A buck for some pins - the Ireland pin will be for St Paddy's day since I never wear green... a US pin fro '76, a water-can pin for SWMBO, and an Egyptian motif "medallion" for my youngest daughter (history/Egypt buff/student)

And from Freecycle almost 200 lbs of Glass block window. 2 ft by 8 ft.)

Dave; the Vintage Pioneer direct drive turntable - "Was Pioneer a good turntable???"

It was and is. it may need some maintenance and some strategic oil, but nice score! what model? (i think I read PL-51A? :dunno: )

The lantern, if NOS is worth some coin to a collector! What is the year date on the bottom? (too ad the box is a bit tattered but at least its there...)

Thanks Outlaw.

Yes the turntable is PL-51A and I did find an online manual for it.

The lantern is stamped 68.

You guys did well today, good job.
I planned on 7 stops this morning and tried to track down a few TOO's.
I came home empty handed. I think someone declared a "bring out your junk" day, all I saw was trash. :(

Community-wide yard sale this morning. More than half Onesies, but just as my interest was expiring, a $1ea table with tools! This is now likely to be my oldest steel tool: a J.Mappin&Co / Sheffield backsaw. Split nuts, beech handle. This was made in England circa1840 or earlier. That's the year Henry Disston started business in Philadelphia.
I am truly envious of that saw. Sheffield is where I grew up and I used to have a few Mappin tools.
Great score.

It's been a crazy and bazar week. First , lighting struck so near my home it zapped my direct tv box and the modem for my internet service. Felt isolated a bit but got back on line today!.
Being disconnected didn't keep me from the sales though. Thursday I hit one estate and a flea . The score wasn't much but I made an incredible connection . More on that later. Thursday take for $27.00:
Irwin augur bit set with wood box- Need a lil attention
Bonney "S" adjustable- looks like it's been stuck in the flea circuit for a decade...
Ward's Cobber hammer
The Griffin rug machine-I have no idea why I bought it other than it looked cool.
#2 HD Smith driver
Pilcher's Black Jack Hatchet
John S. Fray brace-from 1861-1888 Spofford chuck , cocobolo wood and pewter bands. Almost all the nickel finish is gone but it's in great condition other wise.

Today I hit back at the flea and an interesting auction full of civil war items and Indian artifacts. In the middle of all of that was a bit of rusty junk I was interested in. There was tons of money in for this auction as you can imagine so I was lucky to get anything. Spent a total of $99.00 and came away with ...
A big wooden mallet
Plomb screw driver
Stanley No. 80 Scraper plane
A box of rr spikes and horse shoes. For a buck... No one would bid..
Reed 2041/2 , real clean!
lock
Large broad axe
Maybe the smallest hatchet I've seen. I would guess in the 3 or 4 oz. range. No markings. Could be a kindling hatchet???
A small hand made pair of buck skin moccasins, for a child or small woman. They were in the box with the horse shoe's and spikes...--->l

The connection I made has me a bit nervous and excited all at the same time. Long story short is I get a chance to bid on an entire tool collection. This collection is very nice . Also very large. 4 parties are bidding on it so I have a 25% shot at it.
There are so many items it's impossible to detail a bid by item but the basic collection consist planes, saws, chisels, brace & bits, hammers ,levels, rules, wrench's, draw knives, spoke shaves, scribes, vise's and clamps.
Counting both wooden plane and metal ones there are over 1000! Including a Stanley No. 1!
I took a lot of notes and pictures because the time with the collection was limited and I won't be able to seen it again until the bid is awarded. It's going to take several post to show the pictures so bare with me.
Also any advise or helpful hints are welcome.

Oh all the totes and boxes you see are full of planes also. The tool boxes are full of socket type chisel sets

Well it can't compete with Top's potential score, but this is what I came back with after going back out. The early one I did so well at was already closed :(

The other two I planned were DOA, but a TOO got this for $3!

Proto & Indestro combos, an Indestro & PwrKraft DBE, Williams DOE, and (in my best down under Crok Dundee accent) "Aussie for can opener!"

Energizer bunny time!

It appears the collection was built on quantity rather than quality. Most of the planes appear to be very common.

If I was going to bid on that pile, I would try to note the best tools to base my bid on and just allow a little more money for the rest of the pile.

Transitionals, and most wood body planes bring little money these days, and all the "generic" metal body planes are at the lowest value as well.

Can you size up your competition as to what you think they will offer?
Is this going to be open bidding between the 4 of you or do you only get one blind shot?
Does the family have a minimum bid in mind?
Has the collection been cherry picked at all?

I agree that the wood bodies are more work than worth. And 80 % of the metal bodies are common. There are maybe 100 or so that are nice and even rare. These are what I will base my bid on.
It hasn't been picked at all. The court is in control not the family. It is a one shot blind bid. I'm bidding against 2 auction companies and a company called Fine Tool out of Minnesota. None of my completion are local so they will have added travel / shipping/ labor cost. I will just have my red neck self! Also my completion all have deeper pockets but even though it's a large collection , like you said the quality isn't there through out. Right now my gut says 4500-5000. Deeper pockets won't be a factor in that range.
Even though many of the steel bodied plane are common the condition is all nice. Very few broken totes! Not pictured was drawers full of parts for planes.
What price range do you see?

Oh one thing I thought of. Is it only the tools? Or everything? Because some things like that antique coffee grinder on the wall can be worth just as much if not more than the tools. I didn't take a close look but a nice one especially all original can get to $100-200 pretty easily. A rare example can get into the $1000's. So thats something else to consider.

I'm pricing only the tools. Planes, hammers, vise's, clamps, drills, Braces & bits, chisels, levels, rules, saws, wrench's, scribes, and draw knives/ spoke shaves. I have to detail by tool type. The auction companies will be bidding on the entire lot. I'm sure Fine Tools will be bidding on tools only also. So the auction companies may have to break down there bid.

No, I'd like to check it out someday, but right now I can't be away from the house for that long.

I love going every year. Last year a guy had a whole trailer load of vises. All decent vices ranging from $25 - $100. Lots of other cool stuff as well. Can't wait for tomorrow, I'm as giddy as a kid in a candy store!

I couldn't begin to come up with a figure without seeing the stuff in person.

You're actually bidding against 3 auction companies, as Fine Tool is also. They are probably going to bid around 50%.

Yeah over 100 guns. Many knives as well that he made. He (the owner) even made many kit guns(repops) so I'm not sure which are real .

Are there any "scarce" planes in that pile? Stanley #1s are popular, but not scarce.
Any high end levels, etc.?

Just showing off the Witherby 2" chisel I got yesterday for $15. The logo is "< T H WITHERBY >" with the ITHERBY in small caps, apparently an early logo so maybe pre-1882. From the 1890 Winstead catalog (http://toolemera.com/catpdf/winsted1890CAT.pdf), it could be a Socket Firmer, a Socket Framing, or a Solid Silver Steel Socket Framing Chisel... with maybe a replacement handle. If the handle is original, it looks most like the Socket Framing Chisel. I refinished the handle and flattened/sharpened/waxed the blade today, leaving the patina on

It's shaving sharp now and will be used in construction and rebuilding.

With the exception of some of the more rare tools you have identified, the guns, knives and other antiques are probably worth more than most of the hand tools. If you can estimate a total quantity number for the common tools then you can apply a per piece price that you don't want to go over. 1000 tools at $2 each. Can you sell them for twice that? then factor in the more rare items to get a total bid value.

Topop101:

I like the info/advise that Crguy passed along.

It would be nice to win the bid, but the next step would be how to handle it and make your money back in a reasonable period of time.

Thanks for posting the pics, as it's items you don't get to see that often, in the condition that they have been kept.

It's very refreshing to see G-sale finds from outside of the USA!! Can't say I've seen an aluminum ratchet before. Nor one called King ****!!

It would be interesting to see the bounty from a typical garage sale day in Japan, Germany and China.
