2016 Garage Sale Thread

Cody, don't let it bother you. I post things all the time. Sometimes there are no comments, and other times the comment comes a week later. With the number of great finds that get posted each week, it's easy to get distracted and forget to post on individual items. I posted a large screw jack yesterday that I got for near scrap price and no one noticed, I'm ok with that. I don't always acknowledge others finds either, even though I read every post (and drool).

As for time composing, I started compiling my posts for today's finds 8 hours ago and still haven't submitted yet. I write my posts for myself, and then hope that others enjoy them. If they get noticed, great. If not, that's ok too. It's an entertaining discussion, not a Galactic Deathmatch. Like Outlaw said, with all the posts on this thread, it's sometimes hard to see the bear between the trees.

Only you can decide if you did good. What anyone else thinks doesn't matter. As long as you're happy with the purchase, then you did good. FWIW, I think you got some good pieces to fill your box.

Ok, so here's how my morning went - finally


The way things were going, I thought it was going to be a motor day. By the end it had become a clamp day. ......... I had a motorclamp day !

7 planned stops and 2 TOO's. Things started off slow. The first stop at 7am looked promising, but when I got there early the block grinder was already gone and the beat up toolbox that I thought might be a Cman turned out to be a roached out Home Depot Husky. No thanks. I spent a whopping 50¢ for a gimmicky gizmo. Everything else was homeowner junk.

The second stop was much better. The small yard was packed, starting in the driveway and wrapping around the yard to the back. There were still some things in the basement. Lots of carry boxes with odds and ends, several motors, 3 workmates, tools all over the yard mixed with the household stuff, and toolboxes and a table saw in the basement. At first I just stood there trying to figure out where to begin. Unfortunately, most of it was consumer quality stuff. I left the workmates because I didn't need another one (sorry guys). I picked through the electric motors and found a 1hp Rockwell.

$10 got me :
- Rockwell (Philly) 52-493 1hp 3450rpm motor (broken wire, but fixable)
- Carver's mallet (cracked, but still solid)

The Aro Air tool looks to be of 50-60's vintage-maybe look for a older Aro catalog for confirmation & model #--might be obs for parts if required???

The third stop was a bust.

The fourth stop was looking bleak when I pulled up, but I found my second motor hiding near the back. I don't need it, but for the $30 he was asking, there was no way I was leaving a 3hp 1ph motor behind. Now I'm starting to worry about how much spending money I have left for the weekend (stop #6 made it worse).

I don't let it bother me usually because i know most of the time i got deals but nothing too exciting. But when i get brand new sealed vintage craftsman tools, brand new vintage craftsman gearless ratchets, snap-on pliers for less then a few bucks each, matco pliers for 50 cents, and the awesome challenger collection i thought that would definitely get some reply's for sure. I thought it was my best day ever for tool purchases with those two sales combined.

The fifth stop was another bust (a pattern emerges).

Stop #6 didn't start off well, the 26" Kennedy stack sold before they opened. I took it as a sign that I'd be able to eat this week ........ Nope. I passed on the sets of Wright wrenches, not my brand, but there were plenty of other tools to paw through. It was the bucket I found that will dictate Ramen Noodles in my belly this week.

Nice find on the watt meter Outlaw! I found one a while back, but it was missing the leads. Put it on the old meter shelf in the living room. BMW, Thanks for the link! As it happens The Simpson site is REALLY good about having manuals for almost anything. Unlike the ARO, I was able to down load a more recent Manual, as well as one from 1958.

If you want to get yours working (I tested mine and it works good!), you can setup the "Break-in Plug" they use pretty easily.

And then we have the 2 TOO's.

Both were emergency stops as my eye caught something out of the corner as I was driving by. I decided to add these to the collection of Toddler Yard Art in the backyard because my sister was having another group playdate at our house today (we have the biggest yard). Six 2-3 year olds (with Autism) running around the house need a lot of space and distractions. The sandbox was free, the pump cost me $1. (I'd have happily paid more to keep the rugrats busy and out of my hair). It worked.

In the meantime, I hit the auction today, and nearly blew my entire budget for the week in just a a couple of hours. I ended up with nearly 300 pieces, which is mostly common stuff. I did get some cool tools as well and here they are.

First was the Cornwell mid box full of tools.

I also got another hand box and a couple of "box" lots that yielded these. (couple of them are from the Cornwell box as well)

Unfortunately the snappy ratcheting driver has seen better days, but I'm gonna use it anyway. Pliers look a little rough but 2 of them are Kleins and they still have a lot of life left in them. 12" adjustable is a Duro Chrome, 6" is a Proto with the logo ground off. One set of Utica pliers and the other pliers are USA but I brand I never saw before and can't recall now.

Cody, I am one of those guys that reads every post, drooling over most of the scores, but for whatever reason, I rarely reply with my opinion, which is weird, since I am like you, and love hearing the feedback from the community. Maybe I will try and communicate a bit more.

I do agree with JakeMac about the fact that anything we find is a score if we are happy with the price paid. The things that excite me at garage sales would be a waste of money for others. That is the fun part of this thread, seeing what each person gets excited about finding.

Anyway, onto my finds this morning.
Stop number one was the second day of an estate sale. Everything was 50% off, which meant the prices were barely in the reasonable category. I don't know how they sold anything the day before. All I walked away with was this Millers Falls cast iron level. Paid $13, but am in love with it!

The level weighs a ton for only being 24" long! It is in decent condition, with very little surface rust, but one of the vials is missing.
I am trying to figure out the vintage. If anybody knows, I would love to hear.

At the second stop, I snagged a 1/2" Walden 1160 rachet, Klein linesman pliers, and Lufkin 1204 Aluminum folding rule. Paid $5 for the lot.

Cap missing, skips once in a while, spray foam insolation on the selector. I'm hoping to clean it up and use it, and see if I "need" to own a new one...lol

I got one awhile ago for about $10 that looks just like yours but mine is a little beat up on the handle but works perfectly. Yeah i am still trying to find spots for everything. Everytime i get my tools organized i get two boxes more and i have to start all over again

I was chatting up the first garage sale guy, looking at the remains of his father's Erector Set, wondering if the electric motor worked, and looking over a 1917-1940 Henry Disston & Sons mitre saw with a Miller's Falls Langdon etch (I have one the same size, and another smaller one, but both without the etch; and yes, two Langdon mitre boxes), when his neighbor starts pulling out stuff. I spotted this 1930s Snap-on K-23 hiding under some bad red paint, and got it with a hammer and two screwdrivers for $10. I meant to go back to see about the saw, but I completely forgot! I don't even know what the first guy wanted for it.

Later, stopped at a flea and spotted this 22" Bonney. Got it and a Grumbacher artist box loaded with pastels for $14. Sad to say it's been painted black over the original red.

Today we got a break from the hot weather earlier in the week. It was a great day for yard sales, and there were a lot of them out there. Unfortunately after driving past about 30 sales that were all kid's stuff and women's clothes, I decided to call it a day. While heading to the sandwich shop for lunch, I spotted a sign for a sale that wasn't on my list. Decided what the hell, and checked it out. Almost drove past it when an old Craftsman carry box caught my eye off to the side. Apparently it was Grandpa's contribution to the family yard sale. Here's what I cherry picked: 2 stainless wire brushes, 4 files, a Proto punch, Diamond adjustable, USA Craftsman cutters, 2 small Armstrong clamps, and a brand new B&C pipe clamp. I gathered what I wanted and brought it up front, grandpa says "looks like $5 worth." Not a bad day for deals after all

If you want to get yours working (I tested mine and it works good!), you can setup the "Break-in Plug" they use pretty easily.

What did you use for a plug? Two adaptors? I had been halfway looking for something to do this with, but nothing jumped out at me when I was thinking about it. (I also have a Variac that I need to build a plug housing for.)

BMW, if you get the PDF manual from Simpson, they have it shown schematically, Mine had the factory plug, with a receptacle on its back. you can simply get a standard plug or extension cord end, and an "add on" receptacle end and hard wire it, (essentially they simply break one of the leads and wire it to the meter)

The AC load is the plug, and the load is the receptacle...

My first antique oil pumps. There were three of these (different models) at a local auction house Thursday night. One had a broken top and I was not interested. I really wanted the smaller of these two because it was mounted on a stand and was pretty intact and ready for display. Just needed an old oil can to place with it. Ususally these things go online for at least $100 each so I set my sights on one. Got the little one I wanted for $45 and when the bidding stalled on the larger Bennett pump with brass cylinder I jumped in with one bid at $65 and won it too! Love them both and now will have a bit of brass polishing to do some day.

I love those oil pumps I just finished restoring one last week.

I am not completely sure, but the ends remind me of a tie rod adjuster socket that I have.

Several of the guys at GS looked at it the wrench, but none could decide what it was used for.

Owner heard us talking and he saw I was holding onto it, so he said take it home with you.

So, that's how I ended up with it.

For now, your guess of a tie rod adjuster is better than anything we could guess for it's use.

Wow i can't believe i only got one reply to all the stuff i got at the sales yesterday? Especially since i got snap-on pliers for $1 and $2 and getting all that usa craftsman for a steal! Did everyone miss My posts? It is just i spend 30 minutes to a hour each time i take all the stuff out, take pics, and upload them to the forum it is nice to hear a from you guys on my finds. It helps me get better at sales and it is always nice to hear from the experts who do this all the time.

Cody: you did have an impressive haul, and I too will admit to occasional disappointment when my one of my posts to this thread gets no recognition. However, it is easy to get lost in the sea of posts now that summer sale season is underway, and frankly, the "You ****"-o-meter does have a sliding calibration scale. For example, I used to be goggle-eyed over Topop's every post because it seemed like he was bringing home half a hardware store every weekend. Now, that's just normal.

Like others have said, if you're satisfied with your purchase, that's the meat and potatoes--any praise on here is just the gravy.

Oh, and whining about not getting comments on your good deal is borderline You **** solicitation, which bars you from subsequently receiving such. ;-)

BTW, I would put any of the unopened toolsets on ebay to give any collectors of such first shot. If they don't sell right away, lower your prices a few times, and if they still don't sell, then consider using them for yourself. My 2 cents.

I have been working pretty steady on the estate (old farm house I bought last Nov.) trying to get the land to where I can maintain it. 1500 ' of tree line fence row cleared , stumps and all over 200 trees! One barn down , one to go. 7 burn piles burned , ditch's filled, brush cut, tree's trimmed and I'm working on concrete removal next. Also about to break ground on a new shop as soon as the rains stop.
I can't completely stop hitting sales though ... it runs too deep in the veins if you know what I mean. The only thing that I have really slowed down on is vise resto's . I'm only doing custom orders and none of my own. Once the shop is up it's on for real then! I'm back up around 90-100 on hand

One barn down , one to go. 7 burn piles burned , ditch's filled, brush cut, tree's trimmed and I'm working on concrete removal next. For our Northern Virginia and Richmond contingent, I'll be cannonballing down the I-95 corridor tomorrow between those two locations and stopping in at sales along the way. If you see a guy in a rental Mustang and a black ball cap, say hello!

Due to airline and rental car counter delays, I only had time for two stops in NoVa. The first estate sale in Springfield was a dry hole--if there were ever any tools there, they were cleaned out in the morning. I rooted around and found a few miscellaneous items in the rafters or on the wall, including a cantilevered-lid Park tool box, but nothing worth breaking a $20 over. Heading south, I hit a second hand store in an industrial complex and pulled the following out of his one tool bucket for $12.79:

Diamond K16 slip joint pliers
Purox Type W-200 brass torch
The real treasure, I think, a Long-C Craftsman No 100 soldering iron. It has a cloth covered cord but also a UL stamp, so I'm not sure of the age. If it is a 1930's Craftsman tool, the handle is in amazing condition!

I'm spending the rest of the weekend and Monday at my Dad's place in Culpeper putting together a three deuce 327 for his '33 Chevy streetrod. [emoji1]

Well, it's official. Ramen is off the menu, it's going to be a Peanut Butter diet until next payday.

I went to the flea market this morning, thinking that the light rain would keep the number of vendors down (thus lessening the possibility of spending money). I was right about the vendors, but wrong about the money. Unfortunately, one of the vendors that showed up was the Industrial Guy. Sitting right in front of me was a 4" Craftsman/Reed 5181. He wanted $75. It was hard, but I managed to walk away ............... The first time.

Just to punish myself, I went back to see if he'd take $50 for it (counting on him to stay firm to his price). He countered at $60, and I speared myself on the hook at $55.

I've got to learn how to sleep in on Sunday's !

Went back to see the hoarder/collector I bought the Shop Vac from yesterday and walked away with three more items for 30$

Woden 186B/1 3" vise, Made in England. Haven't cleaned it up yet, but is has quite a bit of paint overspray, much like the Record No 5 I bought yesterday, but other than that this one doesn't seem like it was used, there's not any evidence of hammer blows and the jaws are pristine, besides the surface rust which will be easily taken care of. He also had another 3" vise, a Maple Leaf Vises made in Canada, that I would have picked up but had been welded once or twice and not the very best welds either. Had never seen one and might pick it up later if no one else does, if only for the novelty.

Cast iron Stanley level, inspired by jawoodworking's amazing MF cast iron level I picked this one up, nowhere near as ornate or old I'm guessing but still neat and it'll look good hanging on my wall, or substituting as a baseball bat should someone attempt to attack me while in the shop.

Gray tools display board. Couldn't pass it up at the 20$ advertised price, even less so for the 10$ he asked me for it. Similar one on Kijiji right now for 150$, doubt it'll sell for that much, but I'll likely try to fill this one up instead of selling it.

Old fellow running the sale has a lot of stuff, said he'd likely open again late summer/early fall. Great.

I checked eBay for completed listings, matched my chests individually as close to one that had sold, then priced each of them at the eBay selling price. My selling price on each was more than twice what I paid. I love Gerstners!

That was a couple of nice finds (parts washer and grinder with attached sanding belt) which previous buyer left for you.

Kind of softens the blow of missing on the Powermatic commercial band saws.
