Yes Dave, its always good to speak to the sellers. Idk if its my looks or what but half the sales I go to, the seller asks "is there anything I can help you with?" To which I reply, "yes, I'm looking for old tools mostly but love vintage rusty things". Its gotten me a lot of things they hadn't even considered selling.

Cody, it's also good to get to know the buyer competition. I've bought and traded with other buyers in the street before/after sales often and have a few that will hit me up when they fibd things I'm looking for.

That Yankee vise is cool, lots of good finds guys!

4 Items for 4 bucks today! A lil' Queen pocket knife, All Steel Dewalt tool box with removable compartment. I'm not sure when they quit making them metal and went to molded plastic. :dunno: Also got a pair of what I think are pin pulling pliers or wire cutters? They were made by Eagle Claw Wrench co. pat. Feb 6, 1912 . The last item is a frozen 3" old Grand with "Quickset" or quick release. The spring is intact and the screw turns but the slides are frozen. It's why I got it for a buck! If I can get it working it's a great save of an old piece of tool history!

Top, if the pliers rip instead of cutting at the tips, I'd bet those are for pulling nails and staples for re-upholstery.

Posted in vise thread, got this at a garage sale today for $20. Funny how talking to people having a yard/garage sale can get you items they didn't even have setting out for sale.

It's a Schiller Park, 4" jaw, fixed base. Didn't check date stamp yet. In very good shape other than dirty. Works super smoothly.

When am I going to find a $20 Wilton bullet?!? YOU ****!

Well a ran into a great find so i thought till i saw the price of $195 dollars. It was a proto set but it was missing pieces. It had the speeder, breaker bar, and 1/2 ratchet. The seller at the estate sale was a real **** and thought i didn't know anything about proto tools and there value. The main pieces would bring under $40. I was really only interested because of the medal boxes. He said he wouldn't go under $100 and i would be at $40 so no deal happened. I told him good luck selling them and he was being a A-hole and said i don't need any luck i know what i have and what they are worth. I told him i know there value to and have a garage full of name brand tools and i shop prices all the time and he told me so do i. If he did he would know the 3 main pieces bring under $20 a piece even if they are proto tools. Was i in the ballpark at $40 for the lot?

Went to the local flea tool shopping and picked up these new in box kitchen tools. 3 Le Creuset 6 1/3" cast enamel skillets made in France and two Staub cast enamel 7.5 Qt dutch ovens. Amazon lists the skillets for $114 each and the dutch ovens for $344 each. Bought all 5 for $130.

Never know what your gonna come home with from the flea markets and guess thats what gets me out of bed on the weekends before the rooster crows...

If he's going to ask for that much money, the least he could do is organize the tools neatly so you know what you are looking at... People like that are beyond reasoning with. Just walk away...

Outlaw Here's what I've been able to find in the last few minutes. It's worded so only a lawyer can understand but it says something about cutting wire. Maybe they have wore down a bit but they don't cut very well. At least bailing wire that is. I think being 90 degrees and the way the mouth or tip is constructed they may work pretty good for pulling cotter pins?

On the Grand vise, wire off as much rust as you can. Hit the slides on both sides with PB Blaster. Leave it alone for 24 hrs and see if they will start to open again.

A few years ago I sold the box alone for that same 40 with the Flying lady logo... In similar or worse condition. That one was very nice. 40 would have been a great U **** price (IMHO) 100 is a bit much . Maybe next time be a bit more tactful and maybe settle on 65? point out negatives like scratch's and missing pieces but do it in a way that they understand. You have to remember if when they come down it's money out of their pocket! Being on both ends of buying and selling may benefit you some in future negotiations.
My two cents...

That's under way already! I'm not giving it a bath with the spring in it. I do not want to damage that part at all!

I wouldn't have even given him $40, but you probably were pretty close to being in the ball park for what something like that could bring.

He was asking used Snap On price for non Snap On tools imo.

It was $195 but it was the last day so 30% off over $50. He was very firm tho on not going under $100. I didn't even offer him the $40 i just said i would be under $100. I did point out that it wasn't a complete set and that it was missing a lot of pieces.

I'd have been interested at $50 because it had a ratchet, but no more. I already have a whole pile of that stuff I don't use and boxes do nothing for me other then collect dust.

He can keep them for $100, he won't drag that out of someone on CL either.

I piced up 3 proto ratchets in the past month for under $10 each. Proto even tho it is a high quality name brand they don't bring snap-on prices. I was falling in love with the box that is what i was really interested in.

Yeah proto is out for for pretty decent prices if you look. That guy was just a jerk who thought he had a box of gold. If he did he should of at least took out the non proto stuff and made it look nice.

Have had a good weekend, with these being picked up yesterday"

Pebble rat for a buck, misc snappy and Proto LA sockets, 13mm wood nut driver, Apex driver and a gas pressure gauge. I spoted the red box, and had to know what was in there. Behold:

Complete Starrett 196, got it for $22.
Today I hit an estate sale on the last day, and she said $5 a box, so I grabbed a tool b]ox that was already filled and scooped the few other tools into it:

Pleasently suprised, there was Duro, Walden, Plomb, Filson and a bunch of other stuff and some nice comsumables.

Cody - I wouldn't have gone over $60 for the Proto set. For me, the value would have been in the boxes. They're harder to find in good condition, the other pieces are easier to get if you have patience.

Picked up this Proto Professional ratchet a couple weeks ago, it was rusted solid. Works like a charm now. I like the push button socket release.

I have been buying tools at Estate Auctions for about a year and a half. Picked up these Channel Lock Pliers in a box of tools. It says No. 337. Not sure what they are. Seems like they could be wire cutter/wire stripper. Anyone know what these are?

Lots to report from the past few weeks, but I'll start with my favorite score from Friday. I stopped at a sale near my home in which the man was a retired machinist. He was selling lots of power tools and misc items I didn't need. I bought a floor jack from him and started a conversation. After talking a moment about vintage tools, he asked me to sit tight while he went back to his main shop to find something.

He brought out these two (WWII?) vintage Snap-on 1/4" drive socket sets. The second set is a mess, but the first is in excellent condition.

I enjoyed the conversation and he gave me his business card before I left.

Paid $40 for all.

Here's the jack I purchased. I gave him his asking price of $50 without argument. I really needed a new jack and this one is in excellent condition.

I stopped at my favorite pawn shop on Thursday, which is only ~30 mins out of my way, but my problem is that I need lots of time when I'm there.

For $45, plus trade-in of my 20yo 5" Olympia vise, I got the following items:

- Matco 3/8" drive long handle ratchet.
- SK 1/2" drive flex head ratchet
- Wizard 1/2" drive sliding T-handle wrench
- Plomb 1/2" drive breaker bar
- SK 1/2" drive breaker bar
- P&C 3/8" drive breaker bar
- Proto Los Angeles 1/2" drive wobbly extension
- Blackhawk 1/2" drive RH ratchet
- Hinsdale combo wrench
- Williams DOE
- Blue Point DOE
- P&C 1/2" drive speeder wrench
- Walden 1/2" drive speeder wrench
- Husky 1/4" drive speeder wrench
- Gearwrench reversible ratcheting combo wrenches
- P&C x2 5/16 combo wrenches
- Westline 5/8 x 11/16 DBE
- Barcalo-Buffalo 7/8 x 13/16 DBE
- Tru-fit 1" x 15/16" DBE
- Craftsman 3/8 x 7/16 long handle DBE (x2 -V- and =V=)
- Craftsman 12mm x 14mm long handle DBE
- Craftsman 9/16 x 5/8 =V= DBE
- Craftsman 3/4 x 7/8 -V- DBE
- Indestro 7/16 x 5/8 DBE
- Plomb 1125 1/2 x 7/16 DBE

The Socket set is actually two sets: Indestro Super and Wards Master Quality 1/2" drive sets. Both are identical so I presume the Wards set was made by Indestro. These look like they've never been used!

I am not sure. It was the one with the fancy art and furniture in st.paul that had the two day sale Saturday and Sunday! He was willing to go down but said don't bother it it is going to be under $100 and i was at $40 so i didn't even want to piss him off with that offer. I was only interested for the cool proto boxes the tools are easy to come by if you look. He was a real jerk tho that's for sure.
