Lots to report from the past few weeks, but I'll start with my favorite score from Friday. I stopped at a sale near my home in which the man was a retired machinist. He was selling lots of power tools and misc items I didn't need. I bought a floor jack from him and started a conversation. After talking a moment about vintage tools, he asked me to sit tight while he went back to his main shop to find something.

He brought out these two (WWII?) vintage Snap-on 1/4" drive socket sets. The second set is a mess, but the first is in excellent condition.

I enjoyed the conversation and he gave me his business card before I left.

Paid $40 for all.

Brian

Got your "YOU ****!" right there.

Final post for today. Here's a few more garage sale highlights from the past week.

- Craftsman "Crown top" rivet gun ($2)
- "Improved Hummer" 3 hole punch - because who doesn't want an Improved Hummer?!? This thing is a beast! weighs at least 5lbs. ($2.50)
- Sear Craftsman die-cast tractor self-propelled sprinkler. It works amazing with a watering radius of about 50'. I can water the entire front lawn and parts of both neighbor's lawns to boot! ($10)
- Craftsman tap & die set. Haven't checked to see if it's all correct, but it appears complete. ($20)
- Mac tools TL87 timing light ($10)

There is some definite suckage going on in here this past weekend.
I got this crispy old Craftsman vise for $10. Stay tuned for some before/after pics. Everything works and everything is there. I have it soaking in the electrolysis tank now.

At lunch, I went to the recycling yard to drop off some cans and they had this old brass Pyrene fire extinguisher and holder. At $6.50, I couldn't leave it behind.:see: dates to late 40's/early 50's.

I have been buying tools at Estate Auctions for about a year and a half. Picked up these Channel Lock Pliers in a box of tools. It says No. 337. Not sure what they are. Seems like they could be wire cutter/wire stripper. Anyone know what these are?

337 is the part number for a standard diagonal cutter...wonder if these were modified.

Reily, is the 3 hole punch 1/4" or 3/8"" holes? (if you HAVE to keep binder stuff 3/8 is THE way to go...)

Username, Cool finds, but don't forget, Carbon Tet is one of those nasty chemicals...

Bought a few things at a local flea market place.

NOS Stanley Powerlock 30' and Craftsman 25' tape measures. I really like the automatic locking style of the Craftsman. $5 for both.

Williams No. 1288 Midget Electrical Set. 9/32" drive sockets from 3/16 to 7/16, matching 9/32" drive T-handle and handle/extension plus SUPERRENCH 4-way ignition wrenches from 13/64" to 7/16". Also a couple little non-Williams wrenches thrown in there and two extra 1/4" SUPERRENCHes. I'm not sure what exactly the set contained originally, but it seems mostly complete except for maybe a 3/16" wrench and possibly a 1/2" wrench/socket. From what I could find on Alloy Artifacts, the 9/32" drive size means this set was made in the range of 1933 to 1940. Really love this little set and the wrenches especially will come in handy. Set was marked $20 but got it for $12.

That Williams set is cool. I have that same driver and wondered what kind of set it came in.

Love the W&B drill index. Never saw it spelled out like that. Great find on the Starrett squares (to be technical though, I think they're combination squares).

Went to an estate auction on Saturday. The deceased gentleman sold tools at flea market. Many of the items had price tags that took some effort to remove. Mostly Craftsman sockets and end wrenches but a smattering of other good brands. Everything in pictures cost me $34.

That Mossberg has to be really early in reversible history.

I Wasted another $20 at the flea market

20160606_163053_zpsgtmm2mj1.jpg

Couple Milton 1/2" couplers,
Ohio grinder sharpener
Fairmount hammer, we'll see how it looks under the paint
Trimo 10" pipe wrench '16-'27 vintage
$2 Roper Whitney punch, no dies
1/2" Wright
And the 2 boxes for a buck because I had nothing to carry in. Guy threw in the safety glasses.

The dies for the punch can still be bought new. For what you paid for it, buying new dies should still be doable.

I looked around a little, and it seems a new set like comes with the punch if you buy it new might cost more than a punch & dies set with case...
Not sure if I'm doing it wrong, or maybe the new punch isn't as good.

Had three in a row; Thurs Fri & Saturday. Thurs & Fri were estate sales, all the tool guys were there and we had quite the bullshift session in the street waiting for the sale to open. Friday morning almost all the same guys again! Saturday was a garage sale about an hour away from me. Got there early but had to wait until the posted 9am opening time because even though they were all set and standing around the owner said "It wouldn't be fair". Again, sat back with a couple of other guys telling jokes until the clock ran out. Sorry I don't have any group pics but I had to push to get them cleaned & posted up for sale. Still have two buckets to sort through.

$50 garage sale find from last Friday (6/3/2016). Wilton machinist's vise, model 101028 (4"). Schiller Park era, but keyway on slide does not seem to have any markings at all (even after cleaning and wire brushing). Am guessing a 1960s or 1970s production(?) Original swivel lock downs were replaced at some point with hex nuts. The original dust cap was missing but I've already remedied that with a steel freeze plug from the auto parts store. 2" freeze cap size was a perfect fit after minor sanding of the cap edge. Has a little bit of black rattle can paint on the jaws but it yields to mineral sprits and patience and I'm cleaning the whole thing up as time permits. Just a nice vise with honest wear and nothing broken or welded. Have been looking for one of these for a long time at a price I could afford and this one fit the bill.

Another garage sale find from a couple weeks ago (5/12/2016). This is a Yost model 203 1/2 (3 1/2" jaws). Vise was bolted down and not tagged, but it was simply a matter of asking whether it was for sale or not. After deciding that they would sell it I ended up paying $25.

Today i went to pick up a Dewalt cabinet that was for a a Dewalt power shop saw. It was only $20 and i thought i could store some tools in in so it was a no brainier but when i got there i found out he has the original saw with it as well. He said did i want to buy it as well and of course i couldn't separate the original saw from the original cabinet. The saw runs perfect and looks almost brand new. He wanted a extra $40 for the saw which i could not say no too! Found this listing in 2014 that the same one sold for over $370 dollars. The man is also going to deliver it to me this Thursday to my house so i don't have pics yet so these are from the listing. Also the man is moving in a few months and is selling a lot of his tools. He has a whole garage full of vintage usa tools and i will get first crack at all the craftsman and snap-on goodies.

Restore purchase from a month ago. The outside of the case was pretty rusty, I sanded and painted it, just enough to clean it up. 4 bucks for the SAE set.

It's called Restore, in new Brighton. They get used building materials and tools. I've been checking it out for a few months, that's the first thing I've bought.

Stopped at a sale by my work on the way home this morning and i made out pretty good. The prices were marked very high and i was about to leave when he said i am selling my dead brothers stuff and want it all gone so make offers so i made a bundle deal. The total came to $57 dollars but i only had $40 cash and he agreed to it after some hesitation.

1. Craftsman box with the two craftsman pipe wrenches, usa pipe wrench, stanley screwdrivers, stanley pry bar, estwing pry bar. $19 for the box

2. $15 for a box full of craftsman tools. 1/4 usa craftsman metric and sae sets, newer 1/4 usa ratchet, vintage 3/8 ratchet.
