Also included an OK chef knife, and maybe 100 spools of thread for $20.
I figure the drill doctor thing is probably toast if I wear the stone out, but I might as well have one around. Hammer head is a 6 or 8 oz plumb, the sticker still is covering it.

All is not lost on the vise. This is what I did to one that broke. And the one of yours is on a swivel base that will make it even handier. The hardi is a bonus!I filled the voids with lead for extra weight and strength

Topop101:

Good suggestion on making a small anvil out of a broken vise base.

BTW, how many vises do you see with missing hardy's.

Kind of ironic that on the broken vise, there the hardy sat loud and proud.

Mike, Unusual back hinges! And with the leather handle, I'm thinking possibly pre WWII? Will a Machinery's handbook fit in the mid deep drawer?

Can you shoot some drawer front attachment details? If Beatcad pops in he'd be a good one to better ID the maker.

ps: I'm off to the YS races! good list, lets see what they really have...

Outlawmws:

Here is a pic shot outdoor, with middle drawer pulled out. Then, took a couple of indoor pics in poor lighting of the middle pull out drawer on machine chest as well.

BUT.....turns out he had 4 total :willy_nil. They came from an old trade school or something. These two were in the back of his truck. It worked out good because these are complete. I got them both for $20 too!

3baygarage:

Great deal on the pair of WW Vises.

My yard sale score for this weekend... sure needed an upgrade. Man this thing is cherry. I believe the stones may even be original. A little clean-up is all that is required. A little top-heavy I think...exploring available options to add weight to the base. $50

Some nice scores this weekend guys!
I have been helping an older lady sell her late husband's diesel/construction equipment mechanics tools. 1" drive Snap On impact sockets that are a work out just to pick up and Matco wrenches up to 2" along with a ton of other stuff.

I have been cherry picking stuff she is giving me for helping her. Will be bringing it home in the next week or so.

Hound dog, for that one a steel plate bolted to the bottom is probably your best bet. I never quite got why those bases were made so small...

USUCK for such a nice find!

Mike, I don't think that drawer is tall enough for a Machinery's handbook. I wonder what the holes were used to hold?

I'm now leaning to "made by the user" rather than a factory...

One thing I've done is to fill the bottom half of the column with concrete to make it a little more bottom heavy.

More from that sale!

1. Craftsman fold out box that needs work and a craftsman machinist box missing the front door and lock. They were thrown in for free.

2. Buffalo 3/4 socket set $25. This set will do in case i need it until i find a nice usa set for a good deal.

3. Plumb axe and hammer, lixie hammer, lead hammer that the guy who ran the sale used to make.

4. craftsman pliers, craftsman flare nut wrenches, Duluth cutters, Duluth pipe cutter, peterson vise grips. Got all this stuff plus the hammers for $10

5. Drawer full of mostly craftsman sockets with some matco and snap-on mixed in. Also about 15 craftsman extensions for $25.

6. Some kind of torque sockets or extensions i assume?

Mike, I don't think that drawer is tall enough for a Machinery's handbook. I wonder what the holes were used to hold?

I'm now leaning to "made by the user" rather than a factory...

Outlaw:

Once the center drawer itself is accounted for, it would only allow 2-1/2" wide by 3-1/2" tall by 7-1/4" L of empty space, which I'm thinking wouldn't fit a machinery handbook.

When it was on workbench at prior owners, there was nothing in the holes. However, I'm wondering if someone kept their drill bits in this section.

I do see "user modifications", as each slide out drawer has replacement metal bottoms.

Fellow who previously owned it had a great "working" shop while he was alive and people in area would bring him things to fix. Given that, I'm wondering if this wasn't a factory machinist chest, which was given to him in disrepair and which he fixed/modified.

That might explain both the metal in the drawer bottoms, the rear hinges that I haven't seen in other factory chest, the handle which looked modified from a harness and the sliding L portion of the center "machinist handbook" drawer that might have been added for user own needs.

It' s a mystery for sure, but still hoping someone might come along and solve the mystery.

Mike

Got these tools from the over retail priced pawn shop pawn america!

1. 24in Diamond Duluth adjustable wrench was $80 but they took $30 for it!
2. Almost new snap-on hammer for $32 after there 20% off tool sale!
3. I got these after they lost my other snap-on ratchet they were supposed to hold for me because i couldn't buy it the first day because it wasn't in there system yet. I was very pissed and had to fight and push to get the manager to go $25 off the pair of these after the 20% off discount. Snap-on locking flex 1/2 ratchet and snap-on stubby 3/8 ratchet marked $200 for the pair but after the 20% off and extra $25 the manager took off they were $135 before tax!

Nice finds guys! I hit up an Estate sale (two actually, but the send was a miss...) that I was at yesterday, and found a few things in corners:

Most of a quart of denatured alcohol, A WIDE fine wire wheel (just in time the one I have on the grinder is gone...), A bronze, possibly CuAl sprinkler wrench, an old mechanical pencil with a wood grip, a cool tiny wood gouge, and a Cool old carving knife. $2 all

attachment.php

The Carving knife is cleaning up decently, it had surface rust; I'm not done yet. The other one in this pic is a similar one I've had a number of years now that is my favorite carving knife, despite its neglect by former owners that let it get rust pitted. It gets and holds an edge well. Neither is SS, and the one I've had is Solingen Germany, but the "new" one is (faintly) marked "American Cutlery, with a Keystone Trademark, but I strongly suspect the blade was made in Solingen Germany and imported.

$14 at the NY Rt90 50-mile yard sale yesterday. Rain off and on all morning discouraged some, and probably detracted from the quality of items I had been so impressed by last year. I only have a photo of the ratchets and wrenches.
One 5-tine cultivator tool, like a garden hoe. $3.
Two Disston handsaws in horribly rusted but salvalgeable state - a D-8 from 1896-1917, resharpened to nearly a point, but with a beautiful apple handle, and a No.12 circa 1896-1900 with a nib and lovely carved apple handle missing upper horn. I'll post pics when I get them back together. $5 for both.
A GE hotplate and a Master Mechanic (True Value) rotary tool with little sanding discs and a couple stone wheels. $3 for both.
5249BL 3/8dr and 4749BL 1/4dr Proto Professional black oxide ratchets. The 1/4dr was frozen, got it apart without breaking anything and turns good now. I foolishly did not photogragh the insides of them before pulling the pieces out, and now I don't knkw if I put the conical springs in right or backwards. I decided to have the wider ends press against the inside of the head, because otherwise they would travel and wear against the plate. $2 for both.
One 1951 date-coded stamped Blue Point LTA2428 DOE wrench and three Indestro metric (12x13, 14x15, 16x17mm) DOE wrenches. $1 for all.

How about a close up of the drawer pulls ?
Might be similar to this Star box.

Just shot a few more pics this afternoon of the machinist chest, so here are some of those that show the drawer pulls in pic 1 & 2.

Pic 3 shows the drawers all removed and interior of chest.

Pic 4 shows the middle drawer

Pic 5 shows the Yale lock front hasp, while pic 6 shows the right front side hasp.

pic 7 with all drawers re-inserted.

I've been too busy to post lately. Workin and missing a lot of good sales. All work and no play is really no fun. I hit one sale yesterday of a former school teacher of mine. Small world. Then dipped into an auction for a bit after work today and picked a few things.
94 Prentiss bull dog
Bunch of Plomb and Wizard wrench's
Bunch of C clamps
Several old single lever vise grips.
Sioux valve lapper with an old can of compound and spring compressors
several hand saws including 2 Disston finger hole 5 bolt
Atlas blasting caps , still about a dozen or so in the box with fuse and crimper
old craftsman pipe wrench- odd style and a snappy combo wrench
pair of old rules and tapes
fly fishing tackle box
eagle oil can.
warren "quik werks " rivet hammer- I like this old dude!
Couple other boxes of misc stuff . Total from the sales and auction 121.50

You really shouldn't mess with those blasting caps. They're more dangerous than you might think. They're not fireworks. They're high explosive and used to detonate dynamite, and are probably illegal to own if you aren't a professional. They can be shock sensitive and should be stored apart from each other in a proper cap box. You really need to contact your local law enforcement organization and let them deal with it.

Boy, you would think those pulls would ID that box, unless someone added them later in it's life.
Regardless, very nice box, Sir ! Enjoy!

When I was a kid I had a friend who lost a couple fingers playing with a blasting cap. No telling how old and unstable yours are. Kind of scary. Don't listen to any of your friends who hand you their beer and say, "Watch this."

My grandfather lost an eye and his thumb, index and middle fingers off his left hand as a child. He found a blasting cap near the mines in Sudbury where he lived and it blew when he picked it up.

Nice scores. I like that Vulcan. Tough to find that one.

IMG_0038_zpsijnahtcr.jpg

Thanks 3Bay,

I always look to pick up the Vulcan versions of the Williams ratchets. Local UAW had a flee market with very tools surprisingly but after some digging found it the bottom of one of the few containers with any tools.

They're high explosive and used to detonate dynamite, and are probably illegal to own if you aren't a professional. They can be shock sensitive and should be stored apart from each other in a proper cap box. You really need to contact your local law enforcement organization and let them deal with it.

 No worries. I don't plan on using them. Those old copper cap are a time bomb. The stuff I used in the military was always painted to prevent static discharge. I wanted the box only so these caps will get soaked.

Sounds like you got the reassembly correct. The wider end of the spring does against the ratchet body and the smaller end goes against the pawls.
