Went to gas up for the week and hit 4 yard sales. 3 were a bust (not a tool in sight, but those ads...)

The last was a surprise. it looked like nothing there, then I found two tool boxes, for mot of the wrenches, then later almost burred, an old top box socket tray

for ten buck I got all this, including the no/name "tactical" flashlight. No batteries (But also no corroded batteries inside..) but if fired right up once I got home and loaded it up.

Sockets - 2 SO 1 MAC, Proto SK thorsen, Bonny (the hex driver socket) Armstrong, Indestro, Britool, Willainms, Apex, A Proto impact extension, an SK 3/8 breaker. Wrenches: Vlchec, P&C, Indestro, Tru-Fit, thoset, Proto, S-K, and Barcallo.

It was like digging though my own tools at one time!...

40 things all told!

Hit up the habitat and found these 2 guys there. The grinder is a 1/4 hp and is in good shape. Has the provisions to bolt it down so it will be replacing my ryobi. Spent $35 on the grinder. Also picked up the blackhawk torque flash as well. Did not need it but it was too cool to pass up, with it's case for $15.

Dropped in at the last minute on day two of a sale to find these over priced items still on the shelf. One day one they had them both marked at $25 . Way out of line. Day two price is still to high for me so I thought I would roll the dice and hit them up at the last minute . 5 minutes before closing I made them a $5 buck offer for both and they countered with $5 each . That was the price I was looking for so they came home with me..

New or like new Stanley , made in England jack plane. It doesn't measure up to the old ones but will make a good user.

Old Skilsaw 5/16 Drill. It has had the cord replaced at some point but that's probably a good thing. For a 5/16 it's very strong (4 Amps)and surprisingly fast. 1300 rpm's. single speed and direction. Perfect for mixing !

Got this yesterday. Didn't really need it, but what else is new. Oldie. No variable speed, but it has the hand dremel/grinder attachment. Not even sure all the stuff goes with it. I do like the tiny block plane that was in the bottom of the box. Not a lot of balls to this one, but it chews through 3/4" pine pretty well...that's all I'll be asking of it.

I know these don't command much money, so I don't know how much of a deal I got. :dunno: 10 dollars.

I picked up another vintage shop cabinet from CL last night. This one came out of a local area repair shop and will be perfect for small parts storage while giving that service staton feel. Complete with the original key. Unfortunately it must have lived a former life being chaffed in the center of the door right on the logo so that spot has now surface rusted. I will give it a good cleaning and see if I can restore the original paint in that rusted area.

The ugliest box you have ever seen yielded an early Billings Chrome socket set, I am working on freeing up the ratchet. Same sale also had the Cman open end wrench set. Another sales got me a 50's pre block grinder that sounds smooth. Need a replacement glass and it's good.

Your mail box grinder is the same horse power rating as the one I picked up above but it does not have the holes to bolt it down. I find this interesting as I have a '58 with no holes but then the '63 dated I posted above does have the holes. Sounds like they changed the design within those dates :)

Got all of that minus the proto clamp for $20 even, paid $7 for the clamp. Everything I listed is made in USA, I'm definitely starting to get a decent socket collection going that's all USA, a few more trips to the pawn shop and I might be there lol. Anyone have one of these c clamps, it's weird how light it is, made of aluminum I suppose, are they still strong??

Proto must have rebranded that as I have 4 of the same style in the 3" size. and yes VERY nice when you don't want a lot of weight on the clamped object...

Watching for more!

When I purchased the old mechanic wood tool box a month ago, saw a Black & Decker #1 Valve Grinder with patent dates from 1-14-1908 to Nov 6, 1917. Serial number of F1-030.

At the time, the chord was pretty toasty, so didn't take the time to test it.

Today, had some time and so cut off the bad portion of the chord (i.e. almost all of it) to expose enough wire of two leads to put it into an extension plug-in.

Pulled the trigger and away it went.

I'm guessing the front was modified by the mechanic to meet his work on the cars of his time.

In any event, wanted to share.

Mike

That's a lapping machine, not a seat grinder. At that time, it was common for valves to either have a slot or two shallow holes in the head for use with either a manual or power lapping machine.

I have a couple of USA made Exact brand aluminum c clamps that my dad bought before I was born. They are great for clamping, but I would never use them for pressing or bending. I actually use 2 of them to hold my grinder to the workbench.

CL has been good to me this week. I found another deal on a vintage parts/tool storage cabinet. This time a 36" wide Equipto for $10! No way I would argue with that. All drawers still work and I love the work that has been put in over the years to keep this thing working. Mis-matched knobs, paint job, scratches, dings and it still has purpose. I look forward to keep it working and functional.

Blackhawk called it a grinder... Lapping was generally done by a hand cranked device that "agitated" the valve rotationally back and forth.

rmalkow2, you **** for that Equipto. I want one of those just for the cool factor of the 4 flat drawers...

I tried to buy one at a garage sale a couple of years ago and no dice. I tried again about a year ago (Same guy) and still, no dice...

As I recall, (and my notes support) the ones I have are Craftsman, at least the numbers match in the catalogs, but no clue who made them for Sears

Thanks and I know the feeling as I've tried to buy similar ones at auction and they always get priced way above what I could afford. This was just dumb luck of finding this ad and for some reason it did not sell over the weekend until I could get to the guy today. But he was cleaning out two households getting ready to move so I guess he just wanted stuff gone.
This is the proverbial blind squirrel finding the nut. :dunno:

Thanks for info on the B&D.

Found some pics of a Made in England B&D (not mine) that looks very simiar. They called it a vibro-centric valve seat grinder and they also had a vibro-centric optional stand to go with it. They said made around 1940's.

Once again I find myself reading this thread and rushing off to Kijiji to search for something.

I might actually have some money in my pockets if I'd never have found this forum, but what would be the fun in that :lol_hitti

Went to tool auction today (8/16/16) and bought a Rockwell Model 315 7-1/4" circular saw.

Came with tools, fence, metal box and even a spare carbide blade.

Whoever owned it, took great care of it.

I used a similar one quite often. The stand is for dressing the stones.

HA!
Trust me I know the feeling or, should I say that my wallet know the feeling. But there's a lot of entertainment type things I don't spend money on so this is my indulgence.

TIM: for the most part my wallet has been empty since i joined GJ and i haven't even spent any time on some of the threads that have the cool cars, NEW TOOLS and STUFF. i'm a happy camper (most of the time).

ALL: picked up a few things to help me GET ORGANIZED. if any of you haven't seen the ORGANIZING 201 thread in Garage Gallery it needs your posts so we can all get as ORGANIZED as some of the members. i have FSD (flat surface disease) and i'm not sure there is a cure, but i'm trying. here's the link:

That's a beauty! Any idea on vintage?

Going by the metal badge on circular saw, it list Rockwell Mfg Co.

In 1973, Rockwell Mfg Co merged with North American Rockwell to become Rockwell International Corp.

So, prior to 1973 on the Rockwell 315 circular saw.

Very nice. Thanks for the details. Someone really took good care of this saw.
