Not strictly tools related, but I could not resist this at the flea market today.

A completely intact fiberboard lunch box, with a leather handle...

20160817_091639_resized_zpskfb5sz6h.jpg

...and a working latched compartment for a "thermos".

20160817_091928_resized_zps2ixg54fg.jpg

Patented November 16, 1915.

20160817_091948_resized_zpsuuu2knyb.jpg

Searches on patents with that date come up with hundreds of pages about the first Coke bottle, unfortunately.

Searches on vintage lunch boxes, buckets, and pails show tin and aluminum.

Has anyone ever seen a vintage fiberboard lunchbox before?

Mike that saw was originally a Porter Cable design. I don't know when Rockwell took over the design but that might help you date the saw. I can't tell you how many feet of 2 x 4's 2x8, 2x10, 2x12 and plywood I have cut with that model saw. Probably miles. They are very good saws. I'm green with envy.

Todays find was at a pawn shop. For $7 i got an SK screwdriver 71066 long flat head in decent shape and a Wright 3426 that has a lil rust but works beautifully.

Michigan Mike:

Most of what I buy is rusty/crusty, so normally need to spend a lot of time getting things back in shape.

This one looks as good as when I got it at the auction.

Thanks for sharing your experience and use of this model saw.

Mike

I didn't have time to photograph it, so I borrowed these images from an eBay listing.

I paid $3 for this heavy duty Craftsman tubing flare kit at a local thrift store, yesterday.

Not garage sale, but got this box today for free cleaning out an abandoned building. It measures 18.5" x9.5"×6" has 2 side handles and a padlock hasp on the front.

It was filled with mostly junk, but i saved the length of pipe, craftsman doe 1x15/16, 2 craftsman 1/2 sockets, a file, a stone, square, and KD battery terminal cleaning tool.

The box has a provision for a piece of paper to be put on bottom side of lid. Super heavy, maybe 15 lbs empty.

I love these heavy iron boxes! Sometimes tough to fine a reasonable use for them but when you do they are bomb proof! I used to keep a small one handy back when I was racing with quick change gears in it. I still have it in my shed... Another big one has a bunch of Port-a-power gear in it.

Hi, gang. It's me again. I haven't been posting my yard sale finds for a while. Just been overwhelmed with too many commitments. But I'm going to try and start posting again.

The first week of August this year I went on a 4-day tool-and-garage-stuff hunt, on the 690-mile-long St Rt 127 Yard Sale. I took lots of photos, but was afraid to post them all on this fast-moving thread...didn't want to hijack things! So I posted it in the vintage tool section. If you would like to see those photos, here is a link:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=337031

Warning: There are LOTS of photos, so the thread is pic-heavy.

Later tonight I hope to post photos of the stuff I actually bought and brought home. I'll post them here and on that thread, I think. I hope everyone will like them.

Cheers!

Hit just a few yard sales on Thurs (8-18-16), but at one a fellow yard sale buddy and his mom asked me if I was interested in any items out of a small wood box they bought.

Dug through the small box and initially thought it would only yield some spare rusty parts. However, as dug deeper, started to find those missing parts, but still wasn't sure if they matched up.

Took a chance and bought the items from the small box I thought might be useful.

When got home and started to clean them all up, found the following.

Pic 1--#6 at bottom but the planer blades had markings of L. Bailey Patent Dec 24, 1867 and Stanley Pat Apl Apr 19, 92. When getting things further cleaned up, found a Cast "S" as can been seen in pic 2. Plane is 17-1/2" L x 2-7/8" wide.

Pic 3--Stanley # 248 w/fence and height adjuster. Sometimes referred to as weatherstrip plow plane.

Pic 4 & 5--Stanley Sweetheart No. 10-1/2 and referred to as a carriage makers rabbet plane. Plane is 9-1/2 L by 2-1/8" w

Pic 6 & 7--Stanley 386 wood plane jointer fence and probably used by the #6 plane. Pat'd 4-1-13.

Continued from Previous Post:

Pic 1 & 2--A divider that has mfg name, but can't make it out. Snap On Socket 9/16 IM 180 and Pat 327 3430 that appears to have been either repaired or modified. Stanley 1-1/2 x 10 No. 1524 Screw Mate and some small shaper bits that are unmarked. Also got a 36" Pony bar clamp from another yard sale, but failed to get pic of it.

Pic 3 & 4--Group pic of the Stanley Planes and Fence from previous post.

Here are some photos of items which I purchased on the 690 mile-long 127 Yard Sale two weeks ago, during the first week of August.

First, 3 stirling silver pins reading, "Chevrolet Certified Technician," plus a 1950's Pontiac "Chief of the Sixes" commemorative coin. Total cost: $20 Not a bargain, but those pins will make awesome gifts to some of my bowtie buddies.

Next a cute little odd-looking bench vise. I THINK it is for sharpening something, like shears. The wing nut and wing clamp-bolt shape suggest that it is pretty old. Didn't need it, but I successfully bargained it to $15, and had to have it.

Found this Craftsman "speeder ratchet" in a glass case. The lady vendor was a tough negotiator, even though I showed her many flaws on it. Finally I realized that she wasn't going any cheaper; yet I have not ever found another at that price, even with "issues." In fact, I've never found one in any condition...only seen them online. I finally caved in and bought it for $35.

Sorry for following blurred pic. I was running out of light.

Oops...gotta get off computer for a while, wife needs some help upstairs. I have about 40 more pix to go, so let me know if you wish to see more of them. See you all later.

Ahhhh, so that's what is hiding under the handle on a Speeder Ratchet. I always wondered, but not enough to risk destroying one. Thanks for sharing. If I didn't already have two, I might have paid that price for my first one too. (I paid 3 times that for my first one)

OK a rare mid week purchase for me. CL of course and it took a 6 hour round trip (traffic sucked for parts of it...) most of a tank of gas, and $1,100 to bring this home.

But it's as close to my "perfect bottom tool box" as I'm likely to get baring winning a lottery...

it's technically two late 80's Matco MB1220's, but the factory put them on three rails on the bottom and 6 large casters, plus a one piece steel top.

As loaded in the rental trailer, (this is the best way to move a box! low profile so two people to push it on and two to push it off - I ALMOST got it off myself but needed help on one spot... Not bad for an 850, maybe 900 lb box!)

Lots (18 total) of shallow drawers all roller slides, double on the bottom "deep" drawers, 30 X 20 interior dimensions, for 10,800 Square Inches of space! This should swallow 3 of my current rollers, including my 2 biggest.

Overall size, 72 X 21 x 45-1/2 tall

ps: I didn't buy the SO top. It was gone but I was OK as I wasn't really interested in the top...

Hit the Early Bird when two of my favorite vendors were unpacking their trailer. A couple, women, who do house clear-outs. They know I am a studious collector, but I still get great prices, because their dog likes me, and I point out the valuables they should put aside and sell for big bucks. As soon as they saw me, they said, “You’re going to love this haul.”

I actually helped them unload.

There were at least seven (7) old toolboxes.

20160819_071303_zpswhgkpxdy.jpg

My pickings were very selective, as usual.

20160819_080046_zpsentbs7mf.jpg

Here’s the lot cleaned up a little.

20160819_090035_zpsufnoczzj.jpg

Left to right:

The files are GMTK spec correct Nicholson 8” round ******* and a Heller NU-CUT 8” second-cut three-square.
One of the oval sash tool brushes is unmarked. The other one has a Federal Stock Number (not GMTK).
The ratchets are Plomb WF-38 and a Bonney T-35 (1948 date code).
DOEs are pre-war Blue-Points Chicago, pre-war Bonney 1723 CV, primitive HINS(-)DALE, and wartime Williams special tappet.
The Walworth 8" pipe wrench has a 1942 date code.
The tire chain pliers are WEED.
The 6-1/2 inch combo slip joints are a script Herbrand (with an extra interesting logo on the inside handle) and a Fairmount with the triangle FTF logo. The ignition pliers are unmarked.
An empty vintage Marvel Mystery Oil can.
The 3-piece tap sets in their original boxes are GTD and Wells.
The 100-foot steel tape reel is a Lufkin.
The pocket field manuals are all wartime.
The leather-sheathed hatchet is a Plumb.

Lug: my kind of haul. WELL DONE!!

Outlaw: VERY WELL DONE SIR!! i agree renting the $20, $25 or $40 Uhaul utililty trailer to move our heavy stuff is the best method. just curious if Vidmar/stanley built your Matco cabinet or do you know the maker. you've talked about drawer sizes that are better ever since i've been a member here so guessing this one will get put in position and filled up soon. i'd love to see how you fill it up when you get time to and post a few pictures.

went to a local flea market and picked up a few things, i think i did decent for spending $29 but nothing to really knock it out of the park

snap-on flf936 3/8" flex head ratchet, was skipping a bit so i managed to haggle him down. i just opened it up and it looks like it just needs cleaned out and re-greased and thankfully no broken pieces came out.

kobalt 337318 1/4" qr ratchet

craftsman =v= 1/4" breaker bar

plomb 1220 5/8 wrench
proto 3040 7/8 & 13/16 double open end wrench
sk wayne 0-2024 5/8 & 3/4 double open end wrench
sk c-16 1/2 wrench
snap- on oex-200 5/8 wrench
sk 88312 12mm wrench
crusader wc18 9/16 wrench, anyone have any info on it??

snap-on 10 & 12mm flare nut wrench

i kind of gambled on the flex ratchet hoping it just needed some grease and cleaned out, i paid $10 and then $10 for the craftsman breaker bar, the kobalt ratchet and the 2 flare nut wrenches. for all the wrenches i got from a single guy for $9 and he had another toolbox packed full of usa wrenches, ratchets, and breaker bar. i plan on going back tomorrow and seeing if i could get some more at a little better deal.

and what are those field manuals on Lugnutz?

Not exactly a "garage sale" find, but I needed a vise for my new hobby (knife making) and found this in my great grandfathers garage. Gonna mount it on a collapsible work table I'm making to do the work at my apartment. Not bad for free
