Looking good guys!

Another cold, even windier, yet sunny day at the flea but I managed a few finds.

Old Craftsman 1/4 socket box (I believe like Blue Frog's above)

Walden Worcester open end

Williams 19/32" combo (hey, those size bolts pop up all the time :))

Fairmount single open end wrench

Thorsen 3/8 ratchet ( I swear I bought the same one from the same guy in the same crummy shape last year  but maybe it was an Action).

S-K 3/8 roto head ratchet from a sale near the market
Mossberg 11/16 drive ratchet with a socket

Jeff: just curious was the lathe still for sale when you arrived and what do they ask for those in your area? nice work find some stuff you like.

ALL: i stopped at a couple sales and rumaged around and found a few things i'll take a few pictures of and post tomorrow. it's windy and raining so not good for me or pictures currently.

also in case any of you have some woodworking skills to share or want to learn some you might want to stop in on the new woodworking 101 thread that is getting a lot of activity and of course could use more quality member's posts and eyes.

cheers

The lathe was marked sold. Honestly have not seen any others for sale near me so I can't say for sure what they go for. I did notice an old Atlas drill press for 75 and a Craftsman table saw for 150.

Depending on condition, the DP could have been a decent deal Did it have a third pulley? with a metal lathe in the mix, I'd sort of expect it to have one.

Surprising how well the plomb ratchet cleaned up. The bent handle ratchet was a Taiwan brand. It's going to live in the crv

Pwr, that is about the coolest level I think I've ever seen!

+1!

Those are the kinds of finds that make your day, your month, your season and your entire year.

I was thrilled to get it!!! It will be hard for me to beat that find in 2017!
I need money to help pay for my last semester of college that starts in january, so I am contemplating selling it.....not sure yet though. I just landed an Engineering/Marketing internship that is training me for project manager position when I graduate in may. It will be nice to finally be able to keep all the awesome tools I have saved rather than selling them to pay for books!

Congrats on the Effile Lug, I see you also got a third Masterench pipe wrench, and before Jeff asks, looks like a small padlock?

Lug: do you know if the Littlestown trowel is for cement or what material? any chance you might have the picture of the bottom or work surface to post?

nice eye and good stuff there for sure.

Private Lugnutz:
Like your morning haul!!!
Thanks, Mike. I ran into a 3-day estate sale load (too much for one panel truck) at my flea market. Same guy, same estate (several working garages), Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So you know what that means. Vultures at dawn waiting for the truck. Standing around at the back of the truck waiting for the next cardboard box, fruit bin, or milk crate stuffed with tools to emerge. Jostling for position at the table. Etc. I have the advantage though. Most guys are looking for chrome and throw my stuff to the side. And I return the favor! There is some overlap and there are some things that everybody wants. Take for example a hand-cranked battery charger this morning in a leather case with an art deco dial. It belonged in a museum. Alas, somebody else grabbed it before I could.

Congrats on the Effile Lug, I see you also got a third Masterench pipe wrench, and before Jeff asks, looks like a small padlock?

It’s another 6-incher, Outlaw. I bought this one strictly for research/provenance purposes, though. It has a different branding, finish, and steel composition (CHROME VANADIUM). Frankly, I think it’s much older than the pair I picked up the day before (from the same estate sale!), lending credence to the others being wartime.

Here’s the padlock. It’s only an inch wide. I don’t normally even take a second look at a padlock (unless it has a “U.S.” on it :)), but this one caught my eye. I’m also a sucker for industrial pieces where art and function meet somewhere in the middle. The other side is exactly the same. No other marks except MADE IN U.S.A. (hard to read) around the top.

Thanks Drives.

Here ya go. I just assumed it was a center jointer for cement, but I’m no mason. Frankly, this is another piece I didn't really need. I just thought it was cool that it was made by a well-known vise Mfgr with a small but loyal and almost cultish following. Littlestown was sure fond of green!

LUG: i wonder if that Littlestown trowel was made for tuckpointing mortar into brick or stone work with that curve. cool tool that is for sure even if it was to just sit on a shelf the rest of it's life.

Lug, Masterench was made by Heller Bros. so I'd guess that is an earlier one before the Masterench branding came along. Nice find!

BTW the patents are dated 7-5-27 and 4-14-25

Today I made my way to a different flea market. Expectations not very high but I was still hopeful. It turned out pretty good.

Picked up this old socket set in a repainted box thinking it was old Duro. Now I think it is mainly old unmarked S-K with an unmarked Duro ratchet ( bottom right ratchet on the lid). You gotta love the old unmarked stuff! :) The S-K diamond shape can be seen through the paint inside the lid and most sockets are the double dot stamp.

Also picked up a Billings ratchet that has teased me for a while. For a very common vintage ratchet online, I never see any around. :dunno: I refused to buy online and pay stupid money for one. I did see one in a mixed socket set at the tool store, but NFS by itself. Well that was the last tease. Now I found one.

Lets see, top left on the lid:

MAC 1/4 brake bleed wrench
Williams Special DOE wrench
Williams single box end
MAC pliers
Mayhew brass punch
Craftsman 9/32" drive t handle, an odd find.
Snap On extension
Mac extension
Sparta 3/8 ratchet

Kraueter extension
3 Craftsman extensions

Blue Point ball peen head
S-K 3/8 ugly weld repair ratchet for parts
Indestro Select 3/8 ratchet
Billings Life-Time 1/2 ratchet
Vlcheck 3/8 ratchet
Duro (UNMARKED) that came in the set

It says MASTERRENCH, Outlaw, it's just hard to read. What I was referring to by a branding difference was the Heller name and horse on the flip side. It's not the same as the pair I just picked up.

3bay,

What is the length and diameter on that MAYHEW brass drift?

And are there any markings on that weird-looking universal joint? I've never seen one like that before!

Day 3 pickings from the estate sale stuff at my favorite flea market...

20161113_132705_zps11mdg2if.jpg

The [PLUMB] ball-pein (didn’t get it on a scale yet, guessing 8 oz.) has a martial mark.

20161113_133544_zpspfjmxapl.jpg

The CRAFTSMAN BE 1/2-inch sq dr double-end offset (or “T-L”) handle is rare in my experience so I was happy to see it. The rest of the Crafty wrenches (No.1, No.2, and No. 3 tappets, combos, DBEs, and the 1033C DOE) are all “CI”.

20161113_133603_zpslfe4azns.jpg

20161113_133628_zps12c4rmkp.jpg

The heavy duty offset socket wrench at the bottom is a Blue-Point X-360 (1-1/8”), with a phosphate finish and 1942 date code. I couldn’t find the danged handle for it, but I don’t really plan to use it anyway.

20161113_144040_zpstnsm027u.jpg

The looooooong (20 inches) extension next to it is a Plomb WF-36.

20161113_133451_zpsznoxbjby.jpg

Perhaps the most interesting piece in the bunch was this…

20161113_133018_zpscmhclyui.jpg

The rest of the daylight shots were terrible, so I took some others…

Anyone seen one before?

Frank Livermont and P.A. Sturtevant each had a number of torque measuring related patents to their name before they joined their companies in 1974. This thing looks like it must be one of Livermont’s early patents for a torque wrench calibrated to 135 inch pounds.

I’m guessing from the name that it’s supposed to tell you when to stop turning, but I don’t see an indicator. Maybe it’s a click-type. I’ve seen modern versions, but the wrench and the device were integral to each other. This thing looks like it was meant to take different size single end box wrenches, which are removable. That set screw holds the shank in at a little notch in the shank. I guess you’d need a bunch of them for different size fasteners, but I’ve never seen one before.

On top of that, I’m not sure this wrench – which is most likely Wright Aeronautical, not the tool company in Barberton, Ohio – is original to the tool. It looks to have been modified (cut off, grinded down, and notched) to fit inside the opening of the Torq-Stop.

If anybody knows anything definitive about this Torq-Stop, please chime in.

You've been finding some nice old stuff from that estate

This U joint is quite odd.

It fits the Mossberg ratchet I picked up yesterday perfectly. It's 11/16" drive by what appears to be 15/32":dunno: drive. Definitely for some wacky old pressed steel sockets. The small end is too small for a 1/2" drive socket and too large for a 7/16" wrench, the ruler shows 15/32". Does not appear to have been milled down.

The only stamp is a 88 or BB.

You described it to a T.

Lots of guys aren't as interested in the old stuff, so we pass items back and forth, while looking like pigs at the feeder.

Enjoy and thks for showing and describing all your great finds!!!

The brass Mayhew is 7" long, 1/2" dia. part #101.
Dang. I am always looking for vintage Mfgr-marked brass drifts in two sizes:
- 7" x 1" diam.
- 10" x 3/4" diam.

Shop-made brass drifts in these sizes show up occasionally in very old toolboxes, but marked drifts in those sizes are hard to find.

This U joint is quite odd.

I suspect your measured 15/32" is a function of inferior manufacturing standards in that period, 3bay. I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be a male-to-male 11/16" to 1/2" adapter u joint. The 11/16" stud went into the female drive ratchet, as you said, and the other end went into the opening in the old pressed steel sockets. I know the first generation male-to-male u-joints were both 1/2" drive studs. You had to put a spare socket on one stud as an adapter for the ratchet. I guess they wised up and started making them asymmetrical.

So true! It doesn't happen that often at my flea market, actually. More typical for me is coming home with only one or two pieces after a much more leisurely stroll. Some of that is a function of my narrow focus and selectivity. I enjoy both kinds of days each in their own way, but I prefer the leisurely stroll.

LUG & ALL: maybe mine (and our) favorite part is the drive home with the bits and pieces and stuff from our last few stops.

it's good to be a little selective and actually leave a few things for the next guy especially if you already have a few. that said if i know that there is a chance something might get trashed i'll pick it up and try to find a good home for it. of course not having to pay storage on it would be helpful so i'll have to learn and i'm learning to make a few compromises. :dunno:

Picked a few items on Friday.

First few stops were a few small items.
Pic 1. I spent $2 for both Wiha red and yellow electrical pliers, $1 for the working green timer with the rockets ship pointer and $6 for the rest of the stuff pictured. The white handled screwdriver is a Snap On and the fingernail polish remover works great for taking off Sharpie price marks.

The fourth stop was one I made sure I was on time for opening because I spotted a Gyro-Vise hiding in the pictures. I spent $92 total here. Pics 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Pic 2: I snatched it up, the pipe jaws I found in the wooden box and picked up the Craftsman Crown drill chuck and new sanding belt too.

Pic 3: In the wooden box I also found drill bits, plomb bob, wire wheels, compression tester, Millers Falls mini T square and other bits and pieces. The 4-way lug wrench is a Craftsman and in the upper left corner is a U-line double sided parts box, Blackhawk balancer puller, Stanley utility knife and duct tape.

Pic 4: The Craftsman carpenters long tool box has the tray and saw holders and is full of brass and copper fittings.

Pic 5: I bought a tub and two small boxes of sockets and other tools, a lot of Craftsman, some Duro-Chrome, Indestro, Kraeuter pliers, Penncraft, Challenger deep sockets, Proto impacts, S-K 1/2" and 1/4" ratchets and sockets, Thorsen, Snap On crows foot and the JC Penney box and sockets.

Pic 6: The last stop had a few odds and ends. I liked the True Temper Rocket brown handled ball peen and claw hammers, also picked up the new bolts, wire brushes, Proto screwdrivers and 1/4" driver and the long shank padlock. When I got to the cashier I spotted the like new Greenlee punches in the leather tube even though they were more than half of the $40 I spend there.

You guys are finding some great stuff! It's getting really late in the season here, and every weekend from here on is bonus for me. I took the opportunity to stock up for the winter, I guess... :lol_hitti More ratchets than I typically bring home.

Found a sale today that was described as "90 years of accumulation" and they weren't kidding:
Some pics from the basement shop -

I was at that sale!:bounce:

Pic 1. South Bend Milling attachment, 2 wire wheels, curved hemostat, and small wrench. $10

Pic 2. Bee's wax, glass jar of bearings, die grinder burrs some new. $5.

The lathe was still for sale when I was there.

Found this on Craigslist. It's only the second thing I have ever bought off CL. I've sold lots on CL though. Listed as Toolbox in the ad. Has some surface rust in places. Really only needs cleaned up and painted and it should be as good as new. $50. I gladly paid the full asking price. My first Lista!:rocker: Hopefully not the last.

Rory, that's is a definite USUCK on the list, and that milling attachment is a nice find also.

Cowboy I had that skill drill sans the hammer. I didn't know they made it as a hammer drill.
