I picked up 3 truckloads worth of stuff from a recent estate--a man who had a warehouse full of metal and wood working equipment as a hobby. I came about an hour after opening the first day and someone had come through and scored about 15-20 Lie Nielson and Veritas planes, spokeshaves, drawknives, saws, etc. He also had 4 Gerstner chests that went within the first 5 minutes. I'm bummed I missed those, but I still scored a lot, I should take more pictures.

Some of the main items:

  • vises
  • clamps
  • routers
  • router table
  • hardware (ball bearing cabinet slides, nuts, bolts, etc)
  • sockets, wrenches, sheet metal forming tools, odds and ends
  • two craftsman lowers in good shape
  • drill press, but only wanted the cabinet, sold the saw to someone at the estate sale after I pulled out the cabinet. Would have loved to keep the radial arm drill press (a Sprunger) , but I don't have any room for that.
  • kennedy machinist chest
  • 500 bf of hardwood lumber, including some 18-20" wide 5' mahogany planks

Also quick question, can I wipe off most of the lube this guy had on his vise? is probably 1/16 inch thick on there in places. I need to read up on the craftsman boxes too. They don't need restore, I just want to remove some surface rust, seal them (with wax? clear coat?), and lube the friction slides.

K4: you can wipe off most of the lube or grease off of any vise cause it only needs a little. some vises have worked for years without any, but not advised.

as far as your old Craftsman tool boxes you might post them up over on the Vintage toolbox thread and here's the link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49743

i use BLO (boiled linseed oil) to protect most of my old steel, but there are many many different products or a variation of BLO with added things to make it better for your needs. Beeswax works great for toolbox or almost any drawer slides and probably best place to buy it is a stick of DOOREAZE (sp?) at most hardware stores. DOOREAZE is i think 97% beeswax.

also looks like you are a new member so welcome to maybe the only forum that understands the joy of buying tools in the condition and quantity you did.

cheers

ssdave, you give a great illustration I think of how perseverance and hard work to both buy and sell, can allow you to end up with a nice tool collection for basically free. Not to mention the other useful items (not directly tool related) that are in your list.
A good reflection back on what was a good year.

Assuming I could remember what I picked up and how much I paid, I'd be terrified to see hard evidence of my addiction. And then there's the whole selling part that I still can't get myself to participate in.

Yesterday's treasures......
The files have no makers marks on them but they are sharp and have nice handles.....they just need soaking in vinegar

20161215_162246.jpg

Was looking for a 1/4" dr. shallow 9/16" Craftsman socket to complete the set I bought last Wednesday when I came across a Snap-on one for .50 cents then 2 tables over found the Craftsman socket for .50 cents also

20161215_162320.jpg 20161215_162332.jpg

Find of the day was this cool little J.H.Williams B50 double sided ratchet from the late '30's

20161215_162351.jpg 20161215_162359.jpg

Finally got some 1/4" driver bits in a rubber holder (always comes in handy to keep 'em all together).......they have no COO on them but I assume they're imports.....they're also in a Black&Decker holder :dunno:

...that awkward moment when somebody posts an item they bought at your garage sale...and says the exact same thing about it as you did when you got it! :willy_nil

I hope it serves you well. I remember the transaction but can't seem to remember a face; so many people came through there yesterday. You also met nine4GMC, who was gracious enough to be there at 6:00 AM in 32 degree weather (something like -50 degrees when you account for it being Louisiana). He was the muscle with the beard.

Ha! Now that's funny! I was the guy that kept asking if the mustang under the cover was for sale. :)

Hah! That's funny you guys. I was going to comment too that the tag says made in Buffalo. Not familiar with the name so I was looking around and it looks like it might be an aspirator stand. It has some character with all those stickers.

Private Lugz & Outlaw- You guys are right. I did a comparison of the tiny hammer to some others I have and it is the same size. Guess I tricked myself because the handle is half as long.

Not quite that easy. This is a small part of the picture. The yard sale buys is a subset of my total books that I tracked out of curiosity this year.

There's other purchases, other sales, and plenty of expenses. The value of these items isn't income, what I paid for them is "goods withdrawn for personal use". That is then calculated into the profit and loss statement of the Schedule C that I prepare every year.

I'm not unaware of the tax consequences of this, I run a full expenses/income log, and file a schedule c on it as a business. I've slowed down in the past year and a half, for the previous several years I did a $8000 a month ebay business, for 6 to 8 months a year. The past two years I've really only sold off my personal tool extras and extras that come from yard sale buys. I've continued to track it the same as the previous business, although it really is a lot smaller and a lot less profitable.

Some items won at this weeks local industrial auction.

Two hard hats and three Bump Hats, brand new in the bag, $1 each.
IMG_3105.JPG

A cooling system pressure tester kit brand new and never used $15.
IMG_3106.JPG

A box of hole saws new and used with arbors, $5
IMG_3107.JPG

A box of steel reinforcements never used. To me they become cheap steel round tube stock that can be cut for any future use. $5

Went past an antique mini mall and scored a old school catalog and a unmarked oil can and Babbitt bearing scraper. Payed 20.75 out the door.

Deere wrenches sought after?...Yes....I'm one of them. They need to be the USA TY series. I finally got the 1" this weekend and that makes my TY3500 series set complete. Took me 2 years of farm sales, pawn shops and a couple on Epay to line these up.

I got back over to the shop that had those JD wrenches today. took a couple pics for you. both are TY series it looks like, one has the original packing paper still wrapped around it. pretty high dollar I thought.

I went to a sale that was great but missed the first 5 hours but got a few goodies. I saw a bunch of the overlooked auto wrenches and checked them for anything but "Ford" and "Auto". The second one I grabbed was the one, could not believe it was still there. Then I saw a very dirty tool roll with 5 Bonney wrenches and added it to my small pile.
The prices were very good as they wanted it all to go away and paid $1 for the Indian and $3 for the wrenches.

I've kept a spreadsheet list of my garage sale buys this year, and been painfully honest in how much I paid so I could keep track. I've also kept track of what I got out of the extras that I sold that came with the stuff I wanted. I expended about $2650 and sold about $2900 worth. The net result is that I was paid about $200 to $250 to keep the following stuff:

6 hp 86 gallon Air Compressor

SNIP---way too many goodies to keep repeating in quotes

Large mirror

Looking at this list, it's easy to see why I have a small hoarding problem...... But every item on this list is stuff I think I need or can use. I also had many, many items that were just listed as "misc tools". Those are lots of tools that sometimes got sold, but the Proto and Snap-on generally went into my boxes to fill holes in sets or expand capability.

I wouldn't dare to do that.... although the irs may want me to at some point....

Assuming I could remember what I picked up and how much I paid, I'd be terrified to see hard evidence of my addiction. And then there's the whole selling part that I still can't get myself to participate in.

So I've also kept track of what I've spent and what I've sold over the last two years. This list does not include the lift or most of the wrenches I bought for my collection on Ebay auctions.

2016 Spent $1,712
2016 Sold $1,003
Net $709

2015 Spent $3,173
2015 Sold $3,120
Net $53

Unlike SSDave, I did not keep a meticulous list of all the stuff I kept, but my garage, toolboxes and cabinets are a lot fuller than they were. Unlike Jake, I have no problem with the ability to sell--it's more the time required to research, photograph, and post the growing "to sell" pile.

And I'll note that my 2016 volume was way smaller than 2015, further proof that I'm "retired, but still in it for the love of the game". :D

Anxiously awaiting Jake's final ballot count and confirmatory announcement for next year's GST host...

Alright, I know I'm late posting but here it is.

The next person to host the 2017 Garage Sale Thread (assuming he accepts) is ...........

3baygarage !

It was touch and go for a while between 3bay and Topop, with Cody surging at the end. But in the last hours 3bay pulled it out. Congratulations ! :bitchslap Tag, in two weeks you're it.

Now, here's a quick State of the Thread update.

With 14 days to go, we need 124 more posts and 6 more pages to equal last year's thread.
(I'm counting the posts that were made after the first of the year as incentive)
I think it's doable, but with the holiday slowdown it won't be easy.
Let's all make that extra push to the finish line and see how far we can get ! :3gears:

I've been burning up CL trying to find sales, but coming up empty so far. Still, I'm confident that something will pop up before the end of the year. :fingersx:

No sales here today, but I went to a couple antique shops, found a old rusty speed wrench with a swivel socket rusted onto it. got it for a dollar and a BlackHawk Wrench also for a dollar. Turns out under all the rust, the speed wrench is a SK 45181, and the socket is a SnapOn F-16 1/2". No clue the age of them yet. gotta research a little on them. Swivel socket is rough but all freed up now.

I'm cruising CL too Jake, no luck. I did pick this BP up from ebay a couple weeks ago and just got it home Thursday.

That Indian wrench is so cool!

First, thanks to the six voters who put a check mark on my line. This thread is the one I open most eagerly every day to see what the rest of you found on your hunting/picking runs. I learn and see something new almost every week and every once in a while, report my own results.

Nevertheless, the people have spoken, and our fearless leader/host/picker-in-chief for the next year will be a man who needs no introduction, a prodigious picker who reports eye-popping hauls seemly on every run.

Congrats, 3bay--looking forward to your opening of the thread for 2017!!

Dude, well done! I must've missed (or forgot) you posting this before. I have a hankering for a mill, even though I have no need for or training on how to use one. Just the wannas. Again, well done--post a few pics when you get it installed.

Well I held off posting yesterdays take so I wouldn't influence the vote... We were hit with freezing rain yesterday but being the rust junkie I am I needed a fix so I battled through it to hit two sales after getting off work early. It took just over an hour to drive about 2 miles from one sale to the other but I made it. I ended up with one very nice Rock Island vise and a bunch of rusty junk I'll try to save.

This one just showed up in the mail today. I purchased it on fb for $125.00 It show no signs of use or even ever being bolted down. Kind of curious about a few points on it. The lead screw sticks out past the end and there's no dust cap and the hardware attaching the swivel base isn't original. It's marked Chicago as all my babies are but this one is the "newest" one I have stamp dated 1-73. It also has about 99% of what looks to be the original finish. The most interesting point is the anvil pad was never ground.

I picked this up at a metal scrap yard a few years ago but am just rediscovering it as I sorted through my shop.

Sargent thermistor thermometer. It still has tags and instructions written in 1966 from department of interior. If someone has a special affinity for this type of stuff, I'm happy to trade for something else interesting.

Went to an estate sale today, actually went Thursday but prices were high. Today was last day with 1/2 off, make a deal, everything must go. Not a ton of stuff in the garage but did find a few goodies... Anything that had a price was high, but if there wasn't a price then it was name your price... lol.

First picture I paid $10 for everything... :)

Homemade buffer - 1/6HP 1725RPM Westinghouse USA motor
Couple buffing wheels and a fine wire wheel.
Big stack of discs for my random orbital
Two little pipe cutters (one is ridgid, forgot other but made in usa)
Diamond 8" adjustable wrench
little hacksaw cutter
large bag of unused roller chain (looks for garage door)
Bag of NM clamp to thread thingies (my brain isn't working at the moment)

Planning on using that motor for polishing small things. It runs so smooth and QUIET, it has two oil ports for the bearings too. Just needs a properly grounded plug and I'm going to also wire in a switch. Not heavy duty but it will do the job nicely and not rip small things from my hands. lol

Paid $35 for the Bluehawk cart, unopened in box! Found a made in USA grease gun (in FS section), 5 gal gas can, unopened oregon chain for my poulan, and maybe one or two other little things.

Okay, trying to help the thread before the end of the year... Here's a few past finds that I have pictures of...

Ram DA Sander, bought at Habitat ReStore for $10. Just had to fix the cord. Built like a tank inside, all metal gears and bronze bushings! I think I found an ad from the 60's or 70's with that model, don't really remember.

Craftsman detail sander with lots of extras, NIB... I think $15, give or take. Bought it for a friend.

Craftsman 8" grinder, was NIB too... Paid $50... Had no power, hated it... Sold it on CL for $75 and found me a NOS 1987 Dayton 3/4 HP beast! LOL...

A couple mowers. One of left was free and needed new blade. One on right was $1 and needed a little adjustment here and there.

Craftsman block grinder... $20, and it had everything except missing one shield. Was very well used, one of the stones was wore down considerably and had TONS of grindings that I had to CHISEL off. Runs like a top!

McCulloch Pro Mac 10-10S (20"), Poulan (18"), and a Homelite CS40 (18"), paid $50 for the three, non "worked"... Just needed new fuel lines and a little TLC... lol.
