2016 Garage Sale Thread

Too bad I was out of town for that one, Jake.

But I did get two eBay deliveries in for the ol' DBE wrench collection. Here they are:

The top two were actually part of my GJ Secret Santa gift, a big 1939 Bluepoint and an Ampco copper-beryllium. Next was a rare variety of striped Blackhawk deep offset wrench. If any of you have any of these for sale or trade, shoot me a PM. Next, a pair of Indestro-made Westlines, a 1930's Chrome X Quality, three more Indestro-made wrenches, and finally a pair of Fairmont offsets, same size but from two different eras. More details as usual on the DBE thread.

Yeah , the picture is the top view so I can see why it looks like a hot chisel or cutoff. It's a coal hammer. Here's the side view.

One of my items I picked up Friday from the antique stores turns out to be a nicer find than I thought. I knew it was some kind of candle holder and it is but it's also a lantern holder as well. Used by miners! They could stick it in the wall of the mine with a candle in it or turn it hook side down and hang a lantern on it. It was a good find so I thought I would share the info with you guys. It has a nick name , "Sticking Tommy" There's lots of various designs of these as you can imagine and some sell on ebay for as high as $250 bucks. This one however is the 20-60 variety . I'm still stoked about knowing what it is and it's purpose and for the 5 bucks it cost it was well worth it to me.

Another SK ratchet. This is the small 1/4 drive ratchet. I also picked up a Craftsman DBE (3/8 and 7/16) and a 1/2 drive socket. Not bad for $3.

Vb, that SK can take the rebuild kit for the SK "3-8's in a 1/4" body" ratchet. I did one and its become my go-to 3/8 unless I really need more leverage.

I figure I'll get in my last post for the year here since I'll be working until New Years.

Picked up this Snap on Triple Bay box with stainless top.

This box was 5 hours away from me. Well technically I had it delivered. I negotiated over the phone on the price, agreed on a price. Called up a buddy of mine and asked him how much it would take for him to go pick this box up.
Yada yada, he came and got my trailer and headed out while I hopped back in bed to sleep, I work the night shift.
I had him turn on the tracker on his phone so I could see his progress.

WITH delivery, I came out under $1000.
The box is not perfect but is it good shape, needs a set of slides on the bottom drawer and the top bolted back on and it will be good.

I managed a freebie today: I stopped at a local heavy equipment dealer/service place last week and asked if they had any "sprockets" off of a track-layer type machine that were worn out scrap. I was told to come back today, and I did...

23-1/2" tip to tip, and 69-1/2 lbs according to my bath scale:

This will become the base ring for the vise stand I've been wanting to build for my Parker 386!

ALL: While I don't think i'll approach Waggoneer's efforts to hold the title of KING OF THE METAL CABINETS i did find a couple Lyon blueprint ones along with a few Shaw Walker fireproof and file cabinets with different drawer designs that should hold some of my STUFF.

i'll get more pictures later, but here's the big Lyon cabinets.

KT: interesting finds. is the oil pump going to be a user or just shop/garage art? nice saw and would love it if you'd make a restoration thread over in Vintage tools or post it up on the WOODWORKING 101 thread.

The last socket I needed to complete my 60's Craftsman =V= 3/4dr socket set.
It's a 2-3/16" socket in unused condition. I only see one or two of this size show up on eBay a year for this series, and I always seem to lose the bidding. This time I paid up and got it on BIN just a few hours after it was posted.

This has been a 4 or 5 year search. In hindsight, I could have saved money by buying a complete set up front, but instead I put the set together piece by piece. In the end I probably paid twice what I could have. Lesson learned (NOT!).

Been in the middle of moving to a new state, and so had precious little time to go on the hunt. But when I did find the time I hit it hard (and probably paid to much...)
So, here we go:

Nice router plane and dado set, $10 from the restore in Napa, where I found these wood and metal cabinets at $40 each (there are two):

Picked these up from an indoor flea market in Eugene $28 total:

These are from an Estate sale, $14 for the lot which also had a 6 hole electrical receptical to wire in (the gray bars you see are puller arms from a Plomb 10 ton puller):

Found a good, good scrap yard not too far away where I picked this 1/2 horse motor for $35, to power a vintage WalkerTurner band saw:

Nice find, Jake. Nevermind about the premium over buying the set outright--you paid for the thrill of the hunt.

I got it for $14.35 to my door, and that deal has me stalking other mega DBE wrenches on the 'Bay...

Several recent finds,
Astro 1/4" pneumatic ratchet wrench 2760C w/very little use, still has most of the new tool bloom on it, the aluminum casting of the body is relatively smooth and unblemished, and the steel metal treatment hasn't been worn-off. I was getting an o-ring & seal set for a Porter-Cable pneumatic brad tool tht has stopped retracting the driver and this little guy was in the refurbished tools for sale wall display. $25, a very fair price.

Felco C7 cable cutter made in Switzerland, very tight tolerances, no slop, and a pleasure to use. I work on my road and off-road bicycles, and this is perfect for cutting the brake and shifting cables. No 'fan-spread' of the stranded cable when you use this.

Greater 6-1/2" parallel-face pliers, made in England, also very tight tolerances, no slop, and it has a staking pin as well as a cutter, besides the plier jaws.

I bought the pliers & cutters at a yard sale a short distance from SW 8 St in Miami FL, on the way home from a Home Depot run. I got a good wheelbarrow, a 4' Truper I-beam aluminum level, some cast-iron shelving arms (now used for holding pipe clamps and other longer tools in a loft floor joist bay), and some other stuff I can't recall, all very reasonable. If I had to cost-out the pliers and cable cutter as a % of what I got, I'd attribute a cost of maybe $8-10 to each.

I like to work on my motorcycles, and this 1/4" air ratchet will work very well for me. Time to go do some sandblasting on a motorcycle engine today.

Great job finding year end deals guys ! This time of year isn't easy, I'm impressed by the quality of the last minute finds.

It's already happening--my eBay price point has been creeping upward. I may need to unretire from estate sale-ing to save money. When I'm picking, I'm selling enough stuff to pay for what I keep. It's hard to break even if you're only buying stuff on eBay that you want to keep.

ALL: about the only thing that saves me from having a warehouse (or two) full of cool stuff is one i don't charge anything or go on Ebay. that said i do have an ebay account that is my Garage Journal handle so maybe to prevent me from getting a divorce and limiting my storage fees i think i'll start selling a few things in 2017 on Ebay.

of course having some funds so i can buy more COOL STUFF won't hurt.

BTW i picked up a few more metal cabinets this week and i love Shaw-Walker quality. i'm keeping the fireproof ones and a few with smaller drawers and maybe i'll try to find a place for the 4 drawer ones in storage. the fireproof ones might weigh 400 pounds or I'm getting weaker.

I was trying really hard not to go to a sale today, but I had to drive my Grandmother down to my God-mother's house for the weekend and wouldn't you know it, there was a sale a few miles away. I was good the first weekend they held this sale and didn't go. This time it was harder to resist since I was so close anyway. I'm making an effort not to spend money right now.

Q - So, how's that working out for you ?
A - Weeellllll ........... not so good.

Since this was the second weekend, I thought I'd be safe. Most of the good stuff was gone, but the cleaners missed a few things. I ended up spending $15.

(I think there's a law in southern New England requiring every house to have at least one Hood milk carton hidden away somewhere) (I'm ahead of the curve )

I'm hoping to resist 2 sales on the last day of the year, but my record tells me not to bet bad money on it.

Here's maybe my last contribution Jake. There is one auction tomorrow that I'm debating on going to . It's an auction of an auctioneer! The last one of these I went to I killed it and came home with a pickup load of hand tools for less than a hundred bucks. They were selling by the BOX! I'm not sure how this one will be ran but it's 90 miles one way so that's my dilemma.
Today however is a different story. I was at work and there was one 1 garage sale listed that started at 9. A moving sale in and old blue color neighborhood. Lots of elderly boomers and that means classic Craftsman stuff. I was put in a holding pattern at work waiting on a truck to show up so I was able to get to the sale by 10. Well I walked in to see empty peg boards with tool outlines Hundreds of tools already sold. Everything was $.25 . This was a big miss ! You only come across these deals once a year if your lucky.
Well it wasn't a total loss there was a Craftsman band saw and a Taiwan drill press still there he had listed for $35.00 each I asked if he would take 60 for both and sure enough it was a deal. I gave him a $20.00 deposit then hightailed it back to work. After work I shagged over to load up and settle up and after about 30 minutes of conversation about the man career as a type setter tech, he worked on printing presses all over the country, he told me not to worry about the rest of the payment he was just glad it was going to a good home!
So for $20.00 bucks and a bit of listening I brought home a 16 speed drill press with a tapered chuck and a 12 " Craftsman band saw . It's all going in my basement garage ...

No pictures yet but bought around 500 packages of various 3M wire connectors and scotchloks. Each package is in quantities of 50-500. Well over $1k retail. Bought it all for $150. Should last me for a long time!

Doing my part to try for the record ...

I stopped by a flea market I visit occasionally and a first time pawn shop. Between the two, I came up with some interesting stuff. A couple of combos for a friend who likes oddball stuff - a Spanish made Whitworth and the other just because of the name. No points for guessing its COO.
I like the V-Groove wrenches - made in many brands, including Snap-On. No snappies here, but a good start at yet another set of DOE's.
The Bonney HVAC ratchet is in remarkably good shape, as are the star sockets. The Williams star is a new one on me - claims to fit both 7/8 hex and square. Looks like it grabs only the tips of 4 of the hex points. Not for high-torque applications! My BIL is building a set of stars, but only had up to 11/16. Now he has three more. The other two are 3/4 Billings Lifetime and 13/16 Indestro Super.
Dunno how that itty bitty Williams Superrench DOE snuck in - they're wiley. Ten bux for the lot.

I totally forgot it was an SK Wayne. I'll tear it apart next week and lube it. It was a party cool find as I had my 18 month old son with me. We're kneeling down, going through the bucket of sockets and he was making his own pile. Once I was done, he was pissed that I made him put his pile back. So I handed him the ratchet and he carried it up to the counter with a smile from ear to ear. He loves playing with the tools.

I know what you mean about your 18 mo. old lovin the tools, I used to sit
in front of my Papaw's old craftsman box and go thru the drawers and pick out
the ignition wrenches to play with. I credit him for me being the tool nut

Love it. My grandpa taught me everything I know. Grandparents raise me and it really shows as many people my age just don't know how to use their hands.

Mr Drives, Thanks, I think the pump will be a bit of both, art and useful. Funny, that shortly after buying this, I had to buy another unsimilar one at an auction. Ok, I'll re-post that saw on your suggestion. The little pop down wheels on the saw were impressive to me. I think I'll try a link belt, the old saw deserves a fresh start.

Nice to see everyone plugging away still in December. Nothing much going on here this weekend, like the last couple.

Jake- you are the man for putting your matching sets together. Maybe some day I'll take time and patiently go through to see what needs completing. If I could just focus on one mfr. at a time like some of the guys! Never any real rhyme or reason here.

3bay - It's a sickness. That was just one set that I finished. I still have a bunch of others I'm working on.

One more wrench to finish a pre-SnapOn Williams SAE set of combo wrenches.
Williams/Vulcan metric combos.
Williams short metric combos.
a bunch of socket sets from various brands and drive sizes.
And then I accidentally started SAE combo sets from Vlchek and Vanadium Tool Co.
I'm sure I've forgotten others at the moment.

Some of these "projects" have been years in the making.
I even carry a partial list in my back pocket at all times. It was even in my suit pocket at my mother's funeral.

I can't help myself. Once I get more than two of something, I NEED to finish the set.
I'M DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

Haha yes it is a sickness. I used to carry list of Craftsman socket sizes I needed. A flea market vendor got irritated with me once when I didn't want a 1/4 drive 6mm??? IIRC, because I wanted it in 3/8 drive. He said what bolt can't you remove with the 1/4". He didn't understand, just thought I was just being a jerk.

What's bad is I too have carried a wallet list (not to mention mental list) of non-tool things friends are looking for. Cookware, games,etc. I've kinda let that go though. I twice failed to set a guy up with "the right" useless typewriter to decorate his house. . If he wants a rusty wrench to decorate with he knows where to look.

I use a Google doc to track what I have and what I'm missing. So all I have to do is pull up the list on my phone while I'm out and all the information is right there.
