I got 2 pairs of jeans, a pack of plastic crappie lures and a moral dilemma.

I have been wanting a roof basket for my 4Runner really bad for months. My monther in law said if I give her 2 weeks she will buy one. Sounds great and all BUT my mother in law can’t afford to even buy me the $90 Curt roof rack from Walmart wich I would honestly be happy with. My mother in law has recently taken in her ex-sister in law who is has a very aggressive cancer, can’t work and days away from being homeless when my MIL took her in. My mother in law has mediocre income and is close to having to take early medical retirement her self.

I’m sitting here going thanks but you can’t do this and if I tell her not to it will crush her spirit and I’m sure in her mind make me seem ungrateful. I haven’t gotten a chance to talk to my wife about it yet as my mom is in town and I don’t want to talk to my wife about it in front of my mom or my kids. I’m sure my wife will be just as unsure about the situation as I am.

Had a great Xmas this year, got lots of Ryobi stuff to go with my already way too much amount of Ryobi stuff, and bought some little toys that I thought were cool as heck...

By sheer coincidence I found exactly what I was hoping to get under the tree this Christmas:

- GearWrench 85988 12 Piece Ratcheting Wrench Metric XL GearBox Set

- GearWrench 81230F 4 Piece Full Polish Flex Handle Ratchet Set

- GearWrench 3680 Ratcheting Wrench Serpentine Belt Tool

Surprises:

- Craftsman rechargeable LED cordless worklight (no more working in the dark)

There should be a stronger warning on the box with the LED lantern. I plugged the batteries in, pulled up on the case to expose the LEDs and the thing blinded everyone on the room!

Let her buy the gift; just make sure you find sneaky ways to quietly give it back and then some over the next few weeks and months.

For example, you could fix or upgrade something she needs on her car or house.

In a similar situation, I once managed to get hold of the person's car for a day on the pretense of taking the car in for an oil change. I brought it back cleaned and detailed with a full tank of gas, new tires, oil changed, air filter changed, and a few pesky little issues (heater fan switch, intermittent speaker, etc.) sorted out. :D

Also got a nice kobalt precision screw driver set.

It was kind of a lean Christmas this year. Gifts were mostly practical stuff like clothes. The only tool I got was a Hyper Tough (USA) Striking Pry Bar. Overall we're happy

I was thinking the same way as a couple others on here. Have a friend that has the same problem with credit card debt and can't pay it off but loves giving people gifts and buying things for themselves. Well it's got out of hand, but I started asking for counsel on what to do and how I could help them, the wise gentleman told me "you can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped." "They must admit they have a problem first."

Does your MIL know she can't pay for that type of a present or is she just caring enough that she wants to see you get something you've wanted. I'd say if you and your wife think she honestly can't afford it then go to her and talk to her and say it's not a necessity. The girl with cancer is. Otherwise let her get it for you and just keep giving back on things you can provide that she couldn't otherwise afford. That gift alone will make you happier than the rack on your vehicle. I learned the hard way on that one.

ON the Christmas present thing, was def. surprised when I opened an Amazon box and found a Henry lever action rifle stuffed inside. That is a first, That's a tool I can always use and hang in my garage.

I think in the fantasy world my MIL is often in she can afford it. My MIL is often in a fairytale world where everything is great everyone likes her and she loves everyone. My mother in law every once in awhile has an issue at work or with her oldest son but other than that life is a Norman Rockwell painting 24/7. My wife’s dad is a heap of trash that treated my MIL and the 3 kids horrible during their marriage andeven after the 3 kids were grown. I think it cause my mother in law mental strain and now she is over medicated and this fantasy world has caused financial mismanagement for many years.

The wife and I paid off our last automobile loan for Christmas and gave a little extra in the offering plate above our tithe! The title isn't in yet...one step closer to being 100% debt free! All that is left is my student loans. Our goal to become 100% debt free has been rough this year with 5 major medical emergencies to deal with beyond your typical seasonal illnesses and the like, but that's life I guess.

I did get a very nice 1000 lumen worklight with a power plug in the tail end of it from our Secret Santa on here, which I needed badly in my dark garage not only for work on the cars but also to help me with my knifemaking hobby. I've already been using it as I file on the handles for this Nessmuck inspired blade for a friend of mine. I've been using oil lamps and headlamps in my cold and damp garage, lol...

Here it is sucked to the chuck of my drill press to get the right angle for my work at the knife vise.

It looks rough now but eventually I'll have it filed down into a shape similar to this one that I did a while back. It feels really good in the hand and follows the contours of your palm perfectly for a lot of gripping power without having to squeeze the dickens out of a blade while working hard with it.

Not this year but a few years ago, got my dad a Henry .22 levergun to replace his wore out Ithaca single shot as his garage varmint gun. I personally think it's too small and toy-like for me, but he loves it. Dead nuts accurate too, it's hell on squirrels.

As for me this year, I got this Estwing EW6-21BL bricklayer's hammer, as well as a vintage Whitman & Barnes monkey wrench, and a vintage Walsco tape measure.

gdpolk epic knife vise. Mind sharing the make n model?

Here is my haul

Gray Tools Canada, 3/8 drive SAE hex bit set, 3/8 drive metric hex bit set, 3/8 drive double square set, and an adaptor set. All made in :canada:

Tojiro 150mm stainless knife, from Knifewear. A really dangerous shop if you're in Canada and have a weakness for Japanese knives. Not pictured are the two on the way.

And a Fenix TK16, have four Panasonic 18650's on charge in a Nitecore D4.

This was made by another knife maker for me in trade a while back. I've been mentored by several other very well known knife makers and had the chance to try several other knife making vises. This design was the most versatile that could be made for makers of fixed blade knives. Features include:
  • 1/4" steel on all parts
  • base rotates 360* on mounting plate
  • body tilts 90* on base with tensioner to lock in any position desired but also bolt holes at vertical, 45*, and horizontal for a "hard" lockout
  • The squre tubing rotates 360* on the tilting body
  • The "jaws" are pinned in at the bottom with adjustment screws at the bottom for blade stock width and top for tightening down. They are made of 1/4" thick heat treated steel and lined with a 70 durometer rubber sheet to prevent marring of blades
  • The clamp body has a 1/2" hole for mounting pinstock through the clamp body/tubing for sawing it off as well as a 2" vertical slit to mount the blade edge side down for filework on the spine.
  • All of the screws, except the bolt for the "hard lock," on the base have phenolic handles for easy changes and tightening that will be MUCH more durable than plastic.

I could have made my own vise as most knife makers do but this one really offered me a lot of versatility and it is one tool that I literally use on every single knife I make. Quality, adjustability, durability, and stability in how it holds my blades was paramount for the quality of my work. It allows me to position a blade in any way I could want and locks it down nice and tight.

Very nice......I have the non QR version.. so it just sits in the toolbox. I like yours..would be my go to..
While they don't get much love I only buy QR ratchets, I work on power equipment so one job can require 5-6 different size sockets. I hate nothing more than struggling with greasy hands to change a socket. Snap on is particularly bad and has very strong detents. The non QR GF80 I own is almost impossible to remove a small socket from without using a screwdriver to pry it off.

Gear Wrench flex ratcheting wrench, metric set, and Huskey SAE set.

And another Milwaukee, the M12 rotary tool (dremel) . I tried it with a carbide cutter on a broken tap, and it ground the tap away.

Tools I just buy throughout the year as I "need" them.
Can't forget my awesome GJSS gift!

Well sorry to hear about the mil history of what you and your wife go through but in the end do what is the right thing to do and don't look back. It's best to take action with principal and not emotion. Good luck
