Hit some sales on Saturday and got skunked - prices were way too high for the only tools I really looked at. I even went to a Flea Market today and nothing tickled my fancy.

But I found a keeper doing some curbside shopping in my home town. I drove up on a Generac GP5500 Generator sitting at the curb - with no obvious missing parts or damage. I'm of course driving a Toyota Yaris sedan so it's not jumping into the trunk. I drove around the corner to home and trotted back with a handtruck and walked it back home. The folding handle is missing so I needed the handtruck to hold the front end while I walked it home.

Sent a pic to Mrs No_Garage showing her what followed me home and asking if I could keep it?

Got it home and noticed that the choke lever was missing and there is no throttle level. It had compression and once I set the choke it started up and ran. I plugged in a fan and it was making electricity. I plugged in a Kill-A-Watt and it's making 120.8 V and running at 60.1 Hertz. It's quieter than my Honda powered Master generator.

I'll download the owners manual and parts manual, see what's missing and give it a once over.

Jim

Ahhh, the emergency vise removals. You'd be surprised how many people have passed on buying a vise because of it having to be removed. I've picked up about 6 of them that way. Most of the time there's tools within reach to take it off.[emoji38]_hitti

This and some good digging through boxes, getting on your knees with a flashlight, great finds.
I enjoy this part of it as much as the buys.
Amen, cb--me too.

Nice find! Looks like your standard Chinese motor/genset... You can get parts off eBay super cheap. I have a smaller capacity one and I got an entire carb assembly shipped from china for under $15... All it took for me to fix up my $30 generator that I found on CL... lol

Not much of interest, just some random wrenches, sockets and normal workbench clutter. There were quite a few Machinist hand books and various engineering books still left.

All USA unless noted otherwise. I should probably build a light box.

Pliers
- Sargent & Co. Side Cutters
- Diamalloy Pliers
- Utica Long Nose Pliers
- unknown Long Nose Pliers (marked Germany)
- Craftsman (Western Forge) Lineman's Pliers
- Dunlap Slip-joint Pliers
- Herbrand Slip-joint Pliers

Wrenches
- SK Wayne 10 in. Adjustable Wrench
- Proto Los Angeles 8 in. Adjustable Wrench
- Diamond 4 in. Adjustable Wrench: smoothest moving adjustable I've ever used.
- SK
- Blue-Point
- Easco
- Billings
- Vlchek
- Plomb
- Gedore (India): I needed to know how bad it could really be.
- HAZET Oil Service Wrench (Germany) - I am shocked at finding this for $1. I always wanted to see the German Snap-on.
- Oxwall Home & Auto Wrench Set

Automotive Tools
- Buffalo gear puller (Taiwan)
- Craftsman Spark Plug Gap Set
- Craftsman 1/2" Beam Torque Wrench

Drivers
- Snap-on Flex-shaft Socket Driver

I also got another post coming up with the Proto adjustable wrench rust removed via electrolysis. From what I've seen so far, it is entirely surface rust and there is very minimal pitting.

I had a pretty good flea market haul today…

20170218_103544_zpsvcrbwfyg.jpg

The wooden chest is dated 1943 under the lid.

The socket set is a Hinsdale 3/8-inch drive, guessing late 1930’s or up to 1941. The case and all the sockets are Hinsdale SJ2x series but one (Plomb) and the male-to-female uni joint (also Plomb). The ratchet (H-12) and the extension are Hinsdale. I will be looking to complete this set. Guessing the missing piece is either a longer extension or possible a flex head/breaker. Have to do some research.

The three swivel sockets on the left are matching Cornwell.

Some orphan 1/2-inch drive sockets (Armstrong ST-1232, Walden 1832 with a nice “V” mark, Williams ST-1224), sliding tees (Husky H3884, and SK 40152) and an extension (SK 40162). The 1/2-inch drive speeder is a Plomb 5480 and the spud wrench is a Plomb 2613.

The dwarf 45* offset pattern DBE’s are Indestro Select Steel (3/8 x 7/16, 1/2 x 9/16) and Williams Superrench No. 9725B (1/2 x 9/16) with a “V” mark.

And the amber handle 1/4-inch drive spinner is a Plomb 4769. Rare bird to find in the wild in my experience. Maybe more common on eBait.

Here are some close ups of the Hinsdale set…

Also picked up this Singer oil can.

It will go quite nicely with these finds from late 2016 - a 100-year anniversary commemorative tape measure and a SIMANCO wrench, which were in the Singer repair kit!

Great Finds! I really like the Plomb screw driver! The singer stuff rocks too! I've been putting a couple old singers together my self. bought them for an old hen I chase but she didn't like them ... I don't chase her any more... lol

Went on a buying trip in Rhode Island yesterday and today. Really got some great deals.

Bought 6 vises today. Wilton C1, 5" prentiss fixed base, 5" athol swivel base, 4.5" Athol quick release, 1" Athol clamp on, 5.25" prentiss 21 swivel jaw, Parker 23x. Pd $405 for all 6 of the vises.

Gray vise is the Athol and what I assume is a quick release...i got out of there as fast as possibe before the seller changed his mind.

Also bought a small compressor and a Hunter 6x12 surface grinder in great shape & running smoothly with about 30 stones for $150. I cannot find ANY info on the Hunter surface grinder

Sorry for the bad link--I just fixed it.

I'd love to go to this one--I'm just picturing the hoards of people piling up in the driveway while waiting for the owner to show up at noon. ...or not waiting and starting to poke around and/or load stuff up, precipitating a free-for-all.

Here's another C-list ad that I wish I was closer for:

MONDAY 2/20 @ High NOON - Garage FULL of FREE STUFF ! http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/gms/6009759803.html

Boy, this will be a free for all (may already be one...) I'm glad I'm not going to be there today.

I saw that one. Decided it wasn't worth the drive to end up in a free-for-all with the Boston crowd.
If it was closer, maybe. But not if I had to drive halfway around 128 to get there.

First post (with substance) this year. Champion Blower and Forge threading set. Each die has it's own handle and are marked with a patent date (1894), thread size & depth.

Missing the tap wrench and four taps. The one tap in the box is original. Paid $10 at a thrift store.

Brian

Just when I thought the weekend would be a bust I saw an estate sale sign while driving back from 5 other estate sales with not a lick of tools or anything worth getting (high prices)... I stumble across a really good haul!

$70 for all, they said that there was 10x the amount of stuff at the same prices on Friday and even a lot of classic car stuff like a almost completely restored thunderbird, almost makes me regret having class on Friday!

All these goodies, Craftsman sander/polisher, A unknown brand of right angle drill, Williams allen keys, USA made compression gauge, ratcheting set that uses hex keys for the sockets, bunch of sandpaper and other bits including wood handled screwdrivers and some small tape measures, Dunlap table saw with craftsman motor and all the parts to it, a large metal workbench, and a BIG filing cabinet. When I went back to get the bench and cabinet they threw in the large scissor jack and the contractor console for bench seat trucks which is still brand new in the plastic.

Also the workbench drawers fell off the tracks and the foot bent when moving it so nothing a little hammer work and 5 minutes wont fix.

There is also some other unrelated stuff that I got with the $70 but its not tool/garage related.

EDIT: I forgot the neat little Craftsman box!

That workbench looks like 1970's early 80's Craftsman. Has it been repainted?

Had a fruitful weekend. I found a Craftsman 397-19340 block grinder on Craigslist for $20 on Friday and jumped on it cause I wanted one after reading the Block Grinder thread. Then went to the local flea market on Saturday and found another one for $20, this one is a 397-19581 with an attachment for grinding chisel and plane irons.
Aside from my big scores I found a half dozen Craftsman sockets to help fill in missing slots in my set.
A Proto Professional 278S pliers.
A Bonney B-36 pliers.
A vintage M Klein & Sons lineman pliers
And a 3/16 Craftsman chisel. Made in Holland... didn't know Craftsman got them from Holland.

I was able to pick the remnants of an estate sale today.

Out the door for $110. The boxes are a little rough, but function well. I'll probably not do a full restore right now, just clean them up, knock the rust down, then put some kind of protectant on.

When I get bored I might do a full restore.

The lady running the sale said the sold 'a bunch of old snap on stuff' from the $1 table....

I'm betting you would have liked to have been the early bird at that sale! Might be really cool to preserve the Fowler Heavy Trucking logo when you do the restore. I would to see your pic's when your done!

I need to catch up on my latest acquisitions.
A week ago on Sunday I answered a Craigslist ad about a Reed vise on a workbench. Got there and there was this decent Reed 103 1/2R on the bench. The bench itself is made of 2" x 2" x .145" tubing with a stainless steel top that is about an 1/8" thick.

The legs on the workbench used to be mounted to the concrete floor and were torch cut off so I gave them all a straight cut, welded on a 3/4" washer on the bottom and a 3/4" nut to that and then used 3/4" bolts to make adjustors.

I also picked up a watchmaker's / jewelers wood workbench from him. It needs a bit of work to the legs but should turn out decent.

Not cheap at $335 total but I will make some money back on the steel workbench when I sell it.
