Stopped at three pawn shops (and Sears) today... lol...

First pawn shop I stopped at just down the street, all I found was a nice 1/2" Williams USA speeder, a big half-round rasp made in Portugal, and a nice USA 7/8" CMan combo wrench...

$3 out the door. :)

Next pawn shop I went to found an old USA CMan 3/8" drive ratchet, and a USA 18mm combo wrench.

$10 out the door.

I thought I'd share this pic that EOC Jason made up in another thread. This so applies to me at some estate sales I've been to.

I've been to some where they encourage you to set your pile down so you can keep shopping. I've just seen too many people help themselves to someone's pile.

For chicom replacements? :headshake

Actually they are still made in USA... Both in the sets & individual...

(Happened to be at sears today and while looking at stuff I remembered to check.)

On Saturday, I squatted down next to an older guy, he was digging in one bin and I started in the bin next to it, and he started barking at me that he was "here"... I just gave him a look that said "Are you Effing Stupid?", There were 6-8 bins in the "area"; he's working all of them? :wtf:

Some people are snippy like that, it's crazy...

I've learned that even if I'm thinking about something I'll hold onto it, I can always put it back.

We when to go estate sales, my 77yr old neighbor will dig in every nook and cranny in the garage (after going through all the stuff they set up in the middle with prices). He will look in coffee cans, old boxes, behind the old boxes, etc, etc... Finds some awesome stuff though that so many other people missed.

I've lost a few items to pile pickers, but I cut them a little slack, as I once unintentionally picked another guy's pile TWICE at the same sale! I was just in the zone scanning for cool tools and honestly forgot the second time that that was his pile. It helped to soothe my embarrassment that the guy was a real douche--one of those loud, obnoxious buyers that runs down stuff and tries to get even lower deals on rock bottom estate sale prices.

Zero sales of any kind here last couple week ends. Crappy weather, in Texas... weird. Anyways, hit antique stores and Pawn shops and such. Had a few Flea bay items arive also.

Hinsdale socket set from an A store, then the ratchet was found for 5 on fleabay. Some extra and double sockets in the set.

Plomb 1/2 ratchet that was super rusty, cleaned up well but missing the original screws. (where can you find those?) Has a brass one in one side.
Plomb 1/4 ratchet
SK 3/8 beaver tail ratchet with a dark finish
SK Artisan 1/4 ratchet I ran down here on GJ!
Williams wrench 3/8 - 7/16

Great score on the SK wrenches, Jason! Bonus points for picking up some extra goodies on the trip. And thanks that I didn't have to send my operatives out of Fayetteville. :D

Don't forget to look UP as well.
I've found some good stuff hiding in the rafters and between floor joists, not to mention the dark holes on top of foundation sills.

When I was a kid, my grandmother would drag me to junk shops. This was before they went upscale and added the "que" to the name. I'd be looking under the tables and she was always poking me and telling me to always look up. Now I can't help myself. I've been conditioned.

Oh yeah, when they are open I definitely do... But most garages here are sheet-rocked. I go everywhere, even looking around under decks. If there is anything that he's taught me is to leave no stone unturned! Even if something looks like a pile of trash in the corner, I'll go through it... Costs nothing but a minute of time.

Listen and learn from the masters! Sounds like your neighbor is pretty cool. Should get him on here!

I'm that type at a sale too. Didn't used to be but I learned to look in those places. I love it! The coffee cans, the stuck drawer, the bottom shelf or cupboard no one wants to bend down to look at. Along the garage wall behind a wood pile or some old doors. No to mention the bottom of every box of tools, lol.

Some people look at me like I'm crazy, but why not do it? Sometime I walk away with good stuff because nobody wants to bend down, move stuff, or get dirty.

Re-Store Find!!
I keep seeing the tools some of you find at the HH Re-Store. Mine never had any until today. No price tag. I didn't bother asking.

I saw some tools on Craig's List last night, and skipped dinner to check it out.

This guy had a whole garage full of Father-in-law's tools, who passed away. I cherry picked a few items, but could have bought more. I just hate to end up with stuff I don't need, because I'm not into buying and selling. I just use my tools.

So for $55, here's what I got (see photos):

A neat vintage Black & Decker tool cart. It originally held a valve grinder and accessories. It's heavy-duty with a roller-drawer on top and an open cabinet underneath. It weights a lot. Kinda art-deco.

A 2-drawer green cabinet full of "Quality Springs" from Raymond Industries. It's got some old and new springs, but just a nice little box with industrial patina.

A MAC DT1416 slim open-end wrench.

A Vice-Grip No. 9 welding pliers.

Five Snappy screwdrivers. Don't know much about them but the blades are sharp. Octo-Grip?

A Unibit step drill.

A Screw-pitch gauge

An old Clevelend Drill Bit set (No. 52) in a neat metal box. These are wire-gauge drills sizes 1-60. Yes, some of the drills are missing, but inside the box, the drill stand is just so cool! It's removable so you can just put it on your workbench.

One box of about 100 misc-size drills. Guy was hoping I could use it to back-fill some of the missing wire-gauge drills.

Dave

So I just couldn't get those Armstrong wrenches out of my head. I went back to the pawn shop and there they were... Guy was like, "I think these have been sitting quite a while." and gave me a good price on them, $40 out the door. The only one that looks used is the 1" where someone was beating on it. They rest just have residue from being bundled in electrical tape.

Also saw some crows foot wrenches zip-tied in a big bundle, took a quick glance and saw NAPA USA and Wright. They were marked $15, but he took $10.

Of course I get home and the Armstrong set is missing a 3/4". No biggie, I'll find one, can't complain for the price!

Crows feet were a mixed bag. I almost have a complete SAE set with the napa's, just the 7/8" is missing but there is a Wright in that size. Then just some miscellanous metric sizes in Napa, wright, and a matco.

Then I stopped by a different pawn shop. They had this nice set of 3/8" SK sockets, deep & regular, SAE & metric, don't even look used... Was tempted to buy, but price was a little high. Still considering... They've sat there for like six months, I don't think they will go anywhere.

Bora, note that those original drills are Carbon Steel, not HHS, so no hard metal and slower speeds!

The stand I've seen posted in the Drill indexes thread, I don't think anyone has posted the mating box! I don't think anyone even knew there was one!

So overall; Great Scores! Well done! Suckage well deserved!

Jason you might try Cripe Distributing for that missing 3/4 Armstrong.

Once in a while you can steal them on eBay for <$100, most in the $125 range.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...94547+-only.TRS0&_nkw=sk+94547+-only&_sacat=0

Yeah, lowest they would go was $90... I just know if I buy them, I will find a similar set at an estate sale or something for $20... lol.

Jason you might try Cripe Distributing for that missing 3/4 Armstrong.

They didn't have it, but I did managed to find a place that did for a reasonable price (and didn't even try to **** on shipping)...

Yep, I found some good things up in the cobwebs of dead guys' basements and garages. I know I hide good stuff there.

Bora- I'll give a YOU ****!. That looks like a beautiful cabinet. Nice haul.

I agree--that cabinet is choice!

That B&D cabinet is really cool, plus it looks mint! I've seen a few in the past, but a little further than I'm willing to travel. Went to an estate sale today on my lunch break for some cabinets they had pictured, but when I got there, they were all gone. Supposedly some family members came by and grabbed a bunch of stuff. Anyways, I picked up a really cool item, I'll post up some pictures tomorrow.

I had to wait too long to make a real contribution to this years thread but this is what I picked up today.
Two separate transactions.
The first being a basically new Snap on KRL1022 from a local pawn shop. They gave me a little bit of hassle but all in all a good deal. I paid $1300. This was one of the few to date good deals I've gotten from pawn shops.
cc034efb22477e27d7f4f055d48667c1.jpg
The second deal was this load of new snap On tools. Delivered might I add... paid $500 Includes:
-metric and standard wrenches.
-Metric 3/8 shallow and deep sockets.
-Standard shallow and deep 3/8 sockets
-1/4 shallow metric sockets
-torx set missing one bit
-sae and metric Allen wrenches
-3/8 extensions
-2 3/8 ratchets
-Milwaukee drill bits and vice grips.
