Another thing some estate sales are doing is bagging wrenches together just based on whatever fits in the bag. You can have 25 wrenches in one bag and 25 in another and see that you'd have to buy both bags to complete a set. Mixed in those bags is all kinds of Gedore, Globemaster, and Pittsburgh stuff marked up above retail. Originally I had thought this was to stop people from breaking up sets, but them mixing up the sets themselves shows it's half to get more money for Indian/Sri Lankan tools and half to prevent theft.

It is annoying because the photos they put up show things before they've bundled them. I have learned what estate sale companies to avoid. Thankfully plenty of sellers still know that the hunt for things is the best part.

Yeah, you have to look over carefully not only at estate sales, but even at pawn shops... There is *always* at least ONE wrench or socket missing from a set. However, if you notice that then it's a real good excuse to knock down the price.

Thankfully most estate sale companies around here either mostly ignore the garage if the rest of the house is full, or if it's a "tool sale" they will spend the time to organize & group proper sets, and have "misc boxes" too (which I grab those cheap to help complete sets I find elsewhere).

Like just the other day I bought some nice CMan metric wrenches at a pawn shop. Was missing the 16mm... Got a good price for them though, and I had a spare 16mm at home, even was the same -vv- fit & finish. :)

Met up today, got it all for 30 bucks. The wrenches look brand new but a few are missing. The snap on ratchet is a little sticky. The SK roto ratchet is dirty but otherwise great. The other SK ratchet is a little rusty but it works. The sockets are snap on in usable condition. Overall I'm happy

Anyway I can date these?

Sure; generally dinner and a movie is a good starting plan, and see how the evening goes.. :pimpflash

The miscellaneous boxes, especially if they organize by "Wrench", "Screwdriver", "Hammer, etc are great. Then they just throw all of each type in the box which preserves the whole hunting part. Nothing beats finding hidden Bonney and Plomb tools lost deep in the pockets on the inside of a tool duffel bag, though. Most people will give you a good price if you just show up with a handful of chrome made up of the most complete set you can put together. If your hands don't end up dirty, you didn't look hard enough.

Kinda a cool day, driving around with my dog today, as he has a vet appt. mid moring. First stop I picked up this mid '70's Peugeot, which I thought would be a parts bike, but looking at it, it might me a better model than I have

Not much else was going on, so I ended up driving way out to a barn sale, which had a lot of stuff, but I am pretty good on projects right now. Did pick up some stuff though

30 for the bike, five for the rest. Also ebayed this machine lamp, too much but the good ones go for decent money

OK, here's today's haul.

3 stops this morning. A garage sale, an estate sale, and a return to yesterday. Spent a total of $102 (not including the chicken fries at BK). Took me 5-1/2 hours. I'm still recovering.

The first stop was the garage sale. The tools weren't worth the trip, or getting to the second stop too late to get a reasonable number. I did pick up a small 1qt crockpot for my grandmother for $2 though. (no picture, I dropped it off on the way home)

The second stop was an estate sale by a company that's known to draw a crowd. I should have skipped the GS to get a better number. I got there 40min early and still ended up with #133. By the time they opened, nearly 175 numbers had been given out and people were still showing up. Fortunately, the sale was at a mansion, so the initial group was about 75 people. I still had to wait almost 45min to get in. By then I had missed out on 2 walk behind leaf blowers and was worried that the workbench would be cleaned out. When I finally got in I rushed through the kitchen, slapping a sold sticker on the microwave as I flew by, and raced straight for the cellar stairs. Not that there were many tools to begin with, but I got lucky and the workbench was mostly untouched.

In the end, I picked up a couple things for the house and grabbed a few tools as well. I spent $50 and had to walk almost 1/4mi to retrieve my truck to get it loaded up.

The SK ratchet had a Cman socket fused to it by rust. Yesterday's pickle fork pick made an easy job of popping it off. I think I've found its new purpose in life. The inside of the sockets have a lot of rust in them. The basement was really damp. The sockets and wrenches will need some work. The ratchet is dry as a bone, I foresee some SuperLube in its future.

The third stop was a return to yesterday's estate sale. (sorry Outlaw, I looked again but still couldn't find the hook and chain for that pickle fork) This time I made it out of the basement and into other rooms of the house. Spent another $50.

$5 And the craziest estate sale ever. They must have pissed someone off because the police had no parking signs over a quarter mile around the sale. And the driveway was probably another quarter mile.

Check his First post; He paid good coin for that haul. I hope he knows the specific values of the vintage woodworking tools better than I do, :headscrat but I don't think he got hurt.

Incredible haul for sure

Top, nice stuff. Just curious, what are you gonna use to get the glue residue off from those little red stickers? WD40?

BMW- I hear ya on those machine lights! I just picked one up off ebay, paid more than I care to admit.

I think there was a receipt in the first post of like ~$1,400???

Is he just a serious tool collector or are there plans to re-sell some of that?

 This is the collection I tried to buy last year outlaw. I couldn't swing the entire thing so I did the next best thing and got it in the hands of a good and local auction company . I spent 4 weeks last year researching this entire collection before anyone ever laid a hand on it. And if I blew it well, I guess I will learn better next time..

Kinda sorta. A few years ago I bought a bulk load of brand new Proto sockets, put together a few sets which made the cost good, but had a box of 3/8 drive short and deep sockets left, so just started throwing misc. Proto I have come across into the box, figuring I would though it on the 'bay at one point.

Good day hunting , most finds were on second day of sales. I'm surprised they didn't go at the start.

Nice find on that SO box! I need to find one that size, as I'm already outgrowing the shotgun cleaning kit/box I just setup for lantern work!

Went to an estate sale yesterday and back today. Picked up a .22 air rifle for $18, tons of exotic wood for next to nothing, a stud finder, some red magnetic holders, a yard shed, and a patterned steel knife. All the tools he had were related to woodworking, and fit in a small Tuffshed. Also found a few other odds and ends at another sale, such as 12 chemical bottles for my developing chemicals (film photo stuff).

I didn't do quite as well as everyone else, today. Spent $5.00 on the following:

Gedore 14 5/8" Combo Wrench India
SK-Wayne C-22 11/16" Combo Wrench USA
CM 1/2" Dr. Extension USA Long C, Underline Logo
Proto 5330 1/2" Dr. 15/16, 12 Pt Deep Socket USA
SK 4420 3/8 Dr Spark Plug Socket USA
Proto 5422 1/2 Dr 11/16 Socket USA
Indestro Super 2722 3/8 Dr 11/16 12 Pt Socket USA
Bonney TLH26 3/8 Dr. 13/16 Spark Plug Socket USA
NAPA NT622 1/2 Dr 11/16 6 Point Socket USA
Wizard H2613 3/8 Dr 11/16" 12 Point Socket USA
Bonney T24 3/8 Dr 3/4" 12 Point Socket USA
Challenger 1226 3/8 Dr 13/16" 12 Point Socket USA

In addition, picked up the red Wizard box with nice label inside.

It looks like Rustoleum #7762 Sunrise red is a close match for the paint on the box. Now all I have to do is find some Wizard tools.

The Thorsen Open Gear ratchet was tossed in for free, as it was rusted so bad, it wouldn't move. Currently "de-rusting" in vinegar.

Here some other pictures, including the craftsman grinder. Just missing one tool rest, and the cord needs to be replaced after I derust it all. Oh I ended up giving $24 for it all so not a bad deal I thought.

Edit I'm blind cause both tool rests are there!
LOL I was thinking, what missing tool rest.

Oh man thats a hefty sum. But I do have to say there are some gorgeous pieces there that if I saw for sale I would probably jump on it like a starving coyote on a steak.

I could go to estate sale , garage sales and auction for a year and not see 25% of what was at this auction or what I bought. Been doing this long enough to know that when the opportunity comes you have to take full advantage. Probably a good thing I only won what I did though. I had marked 4500 worth and stuck to my researched price and this was all I won.

Gidge, nice Eagle oiler.

Bagged89s10, good score on the green anvil.

Cbacres, great score on the Craftsman heritage box and the little Craftsman 1/4" drive set. Those early =V= sockets are quite a bit different than the later ones.

3Baygarage, that $20 score was great, the Williams set and the "Hoppy" screwdriver are nice finds!

Rileysan, nice lot of wrenches from Goodwill.

Small but interesting haul today. All of this stuff was in the same old box.

20170226_084327_zpsdmvhrtzg.jpg

Snap-On PAR-V stubby screwdriver
Crestoloy 6-inch diagonals with a “U.S.” martial mark
Duro-Chrome model number 6680 crossbar (9” long and fits a 3/8” diameter hole)
APCO-Mossberg spark plug wrench (ORD supplied for Jeep toolkit) with a bent spinner bar
APCO-Mossberg 1/2-inch drive offset T-L handle
Three (3) -D-I- 1/2-inch drive sockets: 1214 (7/16), 1219 (19/32) and 1220 (5/8)
A few Duro-Chrome sockets
A strange socket that looks like it was either made by Duro or it’s a -D-I- knockoff or possibly unfinished? Size 9/16. But it’s completely unmarked.
Three (3) Husky 1/2-inch drive sockets: 1/2, 5/8, and 19/32

Zoom on some of the markngs:

20170226_084418_zpsbbbjzu1i.jpg

And here’s that oddball among the -D-I- sockets.

20170226_113858_zpscquaugv2.jpg

Things Left Behind this week included this box…

20170219_092830_zpsupziehzv.jpg

The rotating grip reminds me of Blackhawk, but I have no idea, it wasn’t marked, and the guy wanted way too much.
