From what I have read the company closed in 2004 and burned in 2012. It was cool to find a couple that were well marked. They feel like they have been in oil rags for years, that nice smooth feeling, but still grips in your hand. It's going to be tempting to not find something to swap them out on. But, I just re-handled everything I have last month with new hickory.

Only one of the buildings burned, I was there in 2013 after the fire and went in two other huge buildings. I saw the burned one.

Was late showing up to an estate sale and got told all the, "decent tools are gone"! But I didn't mind as I was just looking for odds and ends that caught my eye. All together I spent right around $25 and change. Some things are pretty rough but others will clean up nice.

Snap-on SSD12 $1

Snap-on SDWP 244 (haven't ever seen a Woden handle snap-on) though I think it should be a screwdriver not a file [emoji23] $.50
f9c5106a947b23a7a2fa9e1f0d56c164.jpg

Patience paid off with some Starrett punches. Some are in rough shape though. Pin punches, center punches, scribe , pin vise. $5

MOHR die set that someone had hidden away to find later.
If anyone could tell me what kind of quality these are I would appreciate it. I haven't had much occasion to use tap/due sets in the past few....ever. $10

Also got a small box of taps. Largest is 1/4, marked GTD (Greenfield Tool and Die) some show some wear but others look brand new! $2

NOS handles. Bruner ivory. $1

Tap handles. One GTD in the middle and two unmarked and a chuck key (snap-on?) $5

Obligatory overall.

Save them for breakage or new acquisitions as you know those will surface...

Luther 6" hand grinder, Walker 1-1/2 ton screw jack, J.P. Danielson made PLVMBALOY 8" crescent-type adjustable wrench with a 1958 date code, Plvmb combo wrench, a 6" monkey wrench (Coes) that fills a hole for a friend collecting a Signal Corps kit that needs one, and a wartime vintage Blue-Point body hammer (correct logo, no safety warning.)

Hit one estate sale today. Met up again with JakeMac. Got there at a little before 8am, sale started at 10, and was able to get 4 and 5 on the list for Jake and I. The garage was absolutely crammed packed of a lot of "junk" and it took some time to dig through almost everything. Two other guys that where there got two nice things, a near perfect condition Johnson 3hp seahorse outboard and then saw a 2ft Mitutoyo vernier caliper in another guys pile. I was able to find some treasures and walked away with the following for $33.

- Vessel Impact Screw Driver, PEXTO Combination Pliers, Craftsman Line Wrench, Hazet DOE, PZ1 And PZ2 CK Screwdrivers(Germany), Craftsman DBE, Strong Boy Clamp Vise(Germany), Starrett Clamp, Blade Balancer, Greenlee Knockout Punches, Williams SOE, Lathe Wrench?, Kraeuter Pliers, Barcelo Buffalo Starter/Manifold Wrench, And A Fluke 51 Thermometer.

Like Bobcat said, he and I met up at a sale this morning over in his direction. I couldn't get there early enough and he was kind enough to put my name on the list for me. This was a continuation of the sale from last month where I found the Perfect Handle tools and the Penco bench drawer in the basement. Now that the snow and ice were more manageable, they finally opened the garage. I had high hopes for this one, and while there was some good stuff, the tools were disappointing. Mostly late Craftsman and imports. I missed out on a round Ford dealership sign and some of the other things I might have been interested in were priced way too high. (I'm still fighting the urge to go back for the rag can and Napa spark plug cabinets). Bobcat and I spent a lot of time tag teaming and freezing our butts off (I couldn't feel my fingers), then after we had both checked out and returned to our trucks to leave ...................
........ We went back in.

No deals, and I ended up spending a total of $50

EDIT :
I forgot about one more item in the back of my truck.

Once I finally got home and had a chance to sit and relax, I noticed a listing for a sale around the corner (around the corner means 5-10mi in my town). So I put on my shoes and jumped in the truck. It was a waist of time.

Sorry but I had been keeping an eye out for a replacement when mine "was lost" out of my box at work a few years ago. I must have been getting too "forgetful" and decided to leave when that started happening more and more.

Not recently, but still garage sale stuff.
I did a perfunctory (at best) search by using
'Uhaul socket wrench'
And found no reference on the webs about Uhaul sockets.
These two turned up yesterday when I was looking through the
Incredibly useless **** drawer
for a 1 9/16" socket, I guess I got these Uhaul sockets somewhere....

I thought you'd like to see a Uhaul 3/4" drive socket.
I might have a whole set. I'll dig around if anyone cares....

That's not a pry bar. It's a digging/tamping bar. Used with a post hole digger to break up hard ground.

So i went to a great estate auction last night. I have been wanting a jointer for a while and didn't want to pay new prices so ive been watching for a somwthing used. Seen a sale bill and it listed one so i figured i would take a look. Man was i suprised how the auction unfolded. The sale had mostly old power tools (metal body) and a bunch of low end stuff and a few jems.

When they picked up the pair of 1 3/4 chisels and said they will both sell for 1 money i was shocked. Got the pair for 22.50

Next was this box of randoms. I really wanted a good heavy rasp and there was one in there. I guess bonus came with 2 C clamps, coping saw, protractor, square, and some old (mostly junk) saw blades. $7.00

8dbe40926aee74d87a1807d43df36051.jpg

That's what i went for. Sale bill didnt mention it was a rockwell delta brand so that was nice. I know Deltabis considered a decent brand (especially considering im a harbor freight guy for budget reasons) The table looked clean and the motor and blades spun pretty free.

There isn't an obvously visible switch... oh well.

It even came with the homemade stand. I felt i got a good deal at $40.00

So now the icing on the cake. I almost couldn't beleive i was seeing what ibwas seeing when i spied this on the table.

Only one estate sale today and probably for the weAkend... It was a weak sale for tools . They had every thing in boxes and most boxes were ten bucks each. They were full of chrome **** from asia. The only thing I grabbed was a 6 dollar box full of rusty junk! I got it home and started sorting and cleaning and before I knew it I had it almost all cleaned up. Turns out it had some really nice "junk" in it.

Early Snap-on logo 3/8 dr. "T" handle,
Williams ball peen hammer,
Old ladle that was full of lead--- melted it out into my stash
2 Perfect handle drivers- one cleaned up nice the other needs wood
2 Cornwell sockets and 1 extension
Small pair of Klein's - "BELL SYSTEM" cutters 1963
3/8 unbranded wood chisel
2 proto steel chisels
awl
brass nesting screw driver
6" tall brass fire nozzle- found his 12" tall big brother last week
1 twisted wire monkey wrench- not pictured- it was soaking in the juice!

Every thing in the box looked as rusty as the pipe wrench's , even the brass nozzle! Just more proof there's gold under that rust! Oh , I got those pipe wrench's cleaned up just a bit also and one is a Plomb!

I am working on a CL connection for the weekend . Could be some big rusty iron in it! fingers crossed

JMLangford: I look so hard through the boxes of manuals and car magazines in garages hoping so hard to find a vintage tool catalogue but never get lucky. It's all Ryobi/Skil manuals and Motor Trend.

Swingpress: They always think they are gone after the opening rush of professional resellers. I've only been at opening at 1 sale. It isn't worth it to be in my experience. Too many crazed people. It is amazing how little rust is on any of that you found.

Bobcat753:
I somehow got the same Hazet wrench as you today. Which Mercedes do you guess they're from, heh.

This is last week's story because I'm going to forget otherwise. Also I wrote too much.

I drove about an hour south and not a single good thing was there. Everything was gimmick tools ordered from infomercials and hardware story holiday specials. The Wonder Wrench is not wonderful in anyway. Have a terrible video of it in action! It was still in the packaging and complete. A complete tool set with instructions is usually a bad sign about how useful a product was. Also, an on-duty deputy from the county sheriff was there. How odd.

I then drove pretty far NW, but luckily still only about an hour from home. This place was amazing. It was a huge tract of land filled with outbuildings and each of them was dedicated to a particular hobby. There was a greenhouse, a carpenter's shop, a shed full of paint and brushes for any kind of project you could think of. The best part was the largest building (besides the home). I got the Stubai DOE from Austria out of it. It was hidden under papers in a cupboard above a miter saw. All that was in the cabinet was BenchTop and Kmart Taiwan stuff.

I helped some people load a massive old American band saw into a pickup truck because it was heavy enough for 4 people not to be able to do it. They really overbuilt things before they could figure out the least amount of material they could possibly use with a computer model. It is a shame really.

The best part is the one remaining thing I didn't mention: The mechanic's garage! They had unfortunately mostly emptied out all the tools into bins. I pieced together a sequential part number set of Indestro double-box ends and amazing examples of Challenger wrenches. I found a lone giant Wizard combo wrench and some neat Diamond battery terminal pliers. I wish they still did nice patterns on handles like on the Kraeuter pliers I picked up. The most amazing thing was that a man had came in a bought the tool chests before I'd gotten there and they were marked chest sold. He hadn't bought the tools and they hadn't finished clearing them into bins yet. Inside was a Stahlwille triple-square head and a Hazet hex socket. Don't see German tools around here often that didn't come out of a German car tool kit. Next to them was a Proto 1/4 ratchet.

The next day was almost a complete disaster and I only ended up with two socket set boxes and a pair of made in Germany tweezers. I needed them because I found out Husky tweezers are awful. They broke into two pieces because instead of being one piece, they are actually two pieces held together by water soluble glue and what I thought was a black oxide coating is actually incredibly easy to chip paint. I was so disgusted that they broke after two uses that I don't even want them to honor that guarantee. There also was ANOTHER WONDERWRENCH complete and in its packaging. I'm sensing a theme.

When I was near home I stopped at the last one which had some quite high prices despite being the 2nd day and having 25% taken off. While I was looking in a wooden chest of mostly ancient tools a guy walked in and put every socket and wrench in a gallon ice cream pail and brought it to the seller. They said $80 and he lost his mind. He said he thought more like $10 and they stood firm on it. He started raising his voice and calling them crazy. That didn't change the price they quoted, funny enough. He then yelled "Enjoy your chicken you..." and trailed off as he went to his car.

I went through the bin he had left and took out all the Snap-on, Mac, Cornwell, Indestro, Williams, and Hinsdale wrenches and sockets and added them to the S-K and Penncraft ratchets I had picked out. Those sockets were kinda high but $5 for both ratchets is a steal.

There was another one I hit that was on an incredible lot with its own lake and a designated parking area full of cars on day 1. The house was 800 ft up a gently sloping hill. At the top was a 4 car garage where I sifted through a bunch of Indian wrenches and Craftsman and Klein screwdrivers until I found the S-K screwdriver and interchangeable bit driver. I had been looking for that for a while because I've been using a Chinese one with weird cilia like protrusions for grips and the hold is much too loose for my liking. I also got a bunch of S-K sockets there because the guy in charge of the garage was still sorting through wrenches to ziptie together and sockets to put into bags. I sorted through them anyway and left him with his massive Craftsman set.

I cannot stand when they demand you buy all of the sockets in a bag or all of the wrenches in a tie. Adding a 1/4 drive Snap-on socket to a bag of Sri Lanka ones does not make the bag worth $35. Adding an S-K to a Gedore set doesn't make that worth $30, etc.

Picture 7: I also cannot find out who made the socket that is in the last image. I have never seen a forge mark where a ladle is dumping out molten rainbows into two stars. It's American and relatively recent as far as I can tell.

Donglordactual - Funny that you found the same Hazet wrench. I will be trying to find German made tools this season as they are harder to find second hand and are always high quality.

As promised, some close-ups of the markings on that dinging hammer…

The Snap-On logo embossed into the hexagonal wooden handle is awesome.

The first catalog that body hammers appear in is 1946. But the marking (a little hard to see on the photo above) is "BF-611 USA" and an "I" (1951) date code. So, post-war, but I may keep this one.

Picture 7: I also cannot find out who made the socket that is in the last image. I have never seen a forge mark where a ladle is dumping out molten rainbows into two stars. It's American and relatively recent as far as I can tell.

Looks like you found the "Reading Rainbow" socket! Lol nice finds!
Edited: because holy long quote batman!

First pick up in awhile!

Saw some blurry pics on Letgo for some superratchets in a proto box, and what I got there was more than I expected.

Besides twice as many ratchets as I expected, and the good amount of Williams and Bonney.... I found a complete =V= Metric set! I've found maybe 2 =V= metric's in the past 5 years. Maybe just 2. AND it's in a Crowntop pouch!

I found three I was willing to travel to. I skipped at least 15 others...

one was NOT THERE. second week in a row...

No. two was an Estate/move out sale, and I got the gun cleaning kits/rods, Minumus 7 speakers, and the Wiss shears, Aluminum clamp, and Indestro, IBM, Yamaha, and Bonney wrenches, for ten.

The second sale also a move out, I thought I had 4 old wood sewing machine drawers in my arms and asked "how much" "Oh, those are for the antique sewing machine!" "I don't see an old Sewing machine...." (Looking around carefully AGAIN...) "Oh its around here somewhere... - Calls to someone and asks if the sewing machine has been brought out... I never did see the damn thing. but I set the drawers down on a bench. I kept hearing "Oh! that's not doe sale! and "Hey do we want to sell this?"...

In other words NO prep, piles of **** EVERYWHERE, you can hardly walk without stepping on SOMETHING... I nearly fell once trying to get out of another guys way. Frustrating...

I did get a Master "pin" lock where you get the pin onto a hasp and the steel cover makes it a bit harder for simple bolt cutters. and I thought I had a set of Dunlap DOE's but after checking the first two I just took the last two and called it good.

Turns out its two Dunlap and two "Select Steel" so Indestro... :dunno: I'd have grabbed them anyway but wish it was a set...

Oh yeah, same lady doing the pricing, she says "Do yo know how to make the lock work? We could never figure it out.... :wtf: So better that it go to someone that knows... How about two dollars? for all of it?"

hit some g sales and local small flea market today. Scored a Husky bag full of odds and ends. Half good stuff half junk,. Heres the good. Lots of Sockets. 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2. One older 1/2 Husky ratchet. Lots of good wrenches including a couple of blackhawks, SnapOn, thorsen, Craftsman, Matco, Dayton, Boyd, Dunlap.
'Girl was asking $40. I talked to her about half being tiawan stuff and not worth 10 cents. She offered a new price, $10. I of course took her up on the offer.

Also bought a few non tool items, a $10 sound bar, $8 compaq laptop Win 7 working, 2 dressers for the my daughter to refinish, and a shop sign.

Spent around $40 all together today not too bad. oh and some tasty street tacos!

I am a weak willed man.

My planned stop for this morning was rescheduled to tomorrow, so my first stop was at a lumber yard that advertised that they were clearing out a storage unit. Ladders, tools, and cabinets. When I got there, the unit was locked up tight with uncleared snow in front of the door. I went into the store to find out what was going on and spoke to the owner. He didn't have a clue about the CL listing. It was a wild goose chase.

So ...... I ended up going back to the sale from yesterday.
The Napa spark plug wire cabinets were haunting me. The original price was $75 each. Today, I got the 4 cabinets, plus the oil waste can for $200. I tried for $160 but it was a nova (no-go). So I ended up with the 5 pieces for $40 each.

JustRite 21gal oily waste can
4 - Napa/Belden 4-shelf spark plug wire cabinets (15"w x 9-1/2"d x 34"h)

The shelves are just the right size for standard spray paint cans.

Pic 1 is the haul
Pic 2 shows them in front of the wall I'll need to strip to fit them in.
Not sure where the stop sign (it was part of a transportation exhibit that I worked on years ago) or the shelf will end up.

My Garage sale finds

2 box-end Craftsman V series offset wrenches

set of Challenger by Proto 3/8" drive set with 3/8" to 1" sockets missing a piece or 2. For some reason the 1" socket doesnt fit in the case so the set must be missing a 2 sockets.

Gator grip socket and a Blackhack adapter

All told spent $4 on the tools

Good Finds!

I woke up this morning to more rain (was raining all day yesterday too). There was an auction I *really* wanted to go to that started at 9am... Meaning I wanted to get there at least an hour early, plus it was about a good 30-45min drive in GOOD weather...

I decided to err on the side of caution and not go since the radar looked pretty ominous with storms swirling around and going down 2-lane country back roads after all the rain yesterday just didn't seem smart... Plus trying to cover up stuff I might win and have to haul back... meh...

I'm sure some people got some killer deals at that auction, guy had a ton of NICE vintage Craftman & Delta equipment. Breaks my heart but there is ALWAYS another sale... ;)

Great hauls all.

Bobcat & Jake cool that you guys tag teamed that sale. Always fun when you run into a buddy and can say "check this out" or "look at that price".

Jake I for one love the goose chases. If I could just have back the gas and mileage.

Rick heavy on the quality USA there.

Dong My gut and memory tell me the "rainbow" socket might be American Forge. Made by New Britain. Not 100% but I think so.

Swing press very nice avatar  haha

I made some purchases from a retail store. I know that doesn't quite fall into the parameters of the GS thread, but, it was an estate sale of sorts. You guys may like to see these items I purchased from one of the closing Sears stores!

Also, I was handed down some tool items from the GF's family yesterday. Still have to unload and see what they are!

From the perpetual garage sale, I picked up this tool board but the other one was gone.

or "can you help me lift/load this into my truck"
The funny thing was that this was a return to a sale I went to (twice) last month. So today would be my 4th visit. Bobcat had PM'd to let me know about a sale he found in his area, and I filled him in on the skinny since I was already familiar with it.

I can accept if there isn't anything I want to buy. But when the seller can't be bothered to show up for their own sale, it makes me want to leave a bill for my time and gas. I just couldn't find anyone to give it to.

I picked up a Rock Island Vise for $30 (more pics in the Vises of GJ thread) along with a beat up old Craftsman tool box full of old wrenches and drivers.

I haven't done much with the wrenches yet but it turns out the drivers were a healthy mix of SnapOn, Proto, Great Neck, Klein, Vaco, Rosco, Stanley, Craftsman and a few others. They will find their way into my various shops, the RV tool box, truck boxes etc.

Wow Jake! I knew you couldn't leave those things behind. How much more stuff was gone out of the garage? I would go back but my credit card bill will be coming soon and that is never pretty:lol_hitti

One sale today but did pick up a few ratchets, and some larger Craftsman wrenches and some odds and ends for $10.
