HA! I picked up and put down that Crafty round top box 2-3 times thinking about it.
I never saw either of those Craftsman boxes. Now I'm starting to wish I had spent more time at PIR. Some of my best finds came from there on Thursday.

Man, those big Portland swaps sound like a blast.
Smoke- I wonder if that Proto wrench is a Whitworth with the W.
or at least saying, "that's my pile"!
They sure are great ! You may be correct about the w being a whitworth. Still not very common . Can anyone else shed some light on it ?

Guy said his company bought it and he bought it from them damaged with intention of fixing it. He said it was relatively new but they would not warranty it. I unloaded it and got it inside the shop to have a better look and it is NOT damaged. The topmost fin is cracked but it does not appear to affect the cylinder as I first thought. I plan to make a couple gaskets and put it back together(seller had the center head off) then try it out and get a real diagnosis of whats up. BTW, the tank is dated 2015.
Edit: He actually said that the middle cylinder was sucking so that's why he had it apart, isn't it supposed to **** on a 3 cylinder single stage? He never hooked it up because he doesn't have 240v in his shop and the quote he got to run a wire was more than he wanted to deal with so he listed it instead of putting it back together.

) mod#34034 Sickle Mower.

, and company mergers. While our jaws were flapping, he showed me a pile of metal and tools his buddy dropped off for scrap. He hadn't sorted through it yet, but planned on pulling out the good stuff. I saw a Brinks and Cotton 6" c-clamp, Owatonna Tool Co. slide hammer, and a cute little green metal tray on top of it all. I told him I'd give him a few bucks for the tray. He told me to take it.

This one was at the middle of the track not on the straight . The guys on the straight wanted $50 for theirs which was too rich for my blood . This one was being used to hold tools and I talked them into selling it for $5 but I did notice the lock tab on the side of the handle is broken but can still be used to carry tools ...I am wondering what this box is called and when it was made ?

Huh, the one I saw was at the expo, not at PIR.
Another expensive day for me.
There have been certain items on my want/need list for a few years now. Unfortunately, they all seem to be showing up all in the same month as my money is running out.
First the wall cabinets (want)
Then the pipe staging (want/need - could still use a few more sections)
Next was the larger TV. (frivolous want, I admit)
A new storage tent to replace the one that collapsed this winter. (MUST HAVE, thanks for HF coupons)
Now it's a Sickle Mower (desperately needed, but only twice a year)
The few times I've seen them listed on CL, they're either way overpriced or gone by the time I call. Most only seem to last a few hours before someone scoops them up.
This time, I was the guy.
It was listed for 12hrs when I called, and I was the first one to contact him.
It was supposed to be about an hour drive, but because I had to drive through Boston, it took MUCH longer. Then on the drive home, I got stuck in rush hour traffic. Round-Trip, I was in the truck (with a trailer) for 5hrs. I hit EVERY FREAKIN' RED LIGHT in the state, both ways.
So, here's the $300 prize :
a genuine Troy-Bilt (GARDEN WAY) mod#34034 Sickle Mower.
42" bar
5hp B&S Quantum engine
This thing looks like it was only used once or twice in it's thirty-some-odd year history. Then hermetically sealed in a storage vault. It starts on the first pull, and the oil is used but still clear (I'll change it anyway). All the stickers are still mint !
The only issue is that two teeth on the bar are broken, but I should be able to replace them easily once I track down the part.

The seller and I spent a little time discussing Tools, Lawn Machines, Craftsman, MTD, and company mergers. While our jaws were flapping, he showed me a pile of metal and tools his buddy dropped off for scrap. He hadn't sorted through it yet, but planned on pulling out the good stuff. I saw a Brinks and Cotton 6" c-clamp, Ottawanna Tool Co. slide hammer, and a cute little green metal tray on top of it all. I told him I'd give him a few bucks for the tray. He told me to take it.
FREE :
hammered green S-K 3/8dr metric socket tray from a #13 7mm-19mm set.
No sockets
The tray is missing the handle/locking bar, but otherwise in good condition.
It has clips on the back to hang on the side of a toolbox.
The original price in the 70's was $9.98 !
I didn't notice the size marks until I looked at the photo. They're hard to see in person.
Jake-good buy!! However-there's no way that ankle biter is 30 years old.. I doubt it's more than 15 years old.. Looks well loved!!
So, that's it. I think I'm tapped out for a while. We'll have to see if I can find a new source of funding if I'm going to continue to play.![]()

You might be right about 30, but it's definitely more than 20. MTD bought out Garden Way/Troy-Bilt somewhere around 1994 (+/-), and then proceeded to cheapen the brand. The GW built machines are tanks. I have a TB wood chipper from the 80's that just won't die.
I can't remember how to decipher the B&S code to determine the date of the motor. I'll have to look it up again when I have time. I just saw 82 on the plate at a quick glance and it stuck in my head.
Picked up this craftsman belt/disc sander with an Atrix express vac hepa vacuum used as a dust collector setup. It's pretty nice the simple way someone added dust collection to the belt side. Paid $90.
Love getting to a sale first !
Found an ad an hour old yesterday on CL, and went by after work.
Picked up some small but interesting goodies.
They cleaned up nicely and I posted the anvil over in the Vintage section trying to find what is it used for.
That appears to be a very well carved railroad track anvil someone made.. Just judging based on the size-

It could be still be railroad track even if it's thin. Back in the day rail road stuff was lighter and didnt need as thick of track. Plus special lines for mining or factories and such get recycled too and they are often smaller than regular railroad tracks. They also make crane tracks that are smaller too. Thanks for looking but it's too thin. I can set it next to a track anvil this evening .
RedVise:
yours isn't a true anvil, but it is COOL

That doesnt mean it is railroad track (or other track) but there isn't just 1 size fits all tracking.

Looks a lot like a toner vac, did the PO report it worked OK for sawdust ?
They use a bag if I remember correctly (old copier repair guy here).
