HA! I picked up and put down that Crafty round top box 2-3 times thinking about it.

This one was at the middle of the track not on the straight . The guys on the straight wanted $50 for theirs which was too rich for my blood . This one was being used to hold tools and I talked them into selling it for $5 but I did notice the lock tab on the side of the handle is broken but can still be used to carry tools ...I am wondering what this box is called and when it was made ?

Spotted an unused Parts Washer on CL (so essentially new) but it's an older model number . . . . . Clarke model 20002142.

CL seller was great guy (retired flight instructor) who let me have it for $50 and he threw in 5 free aircraft-related hats after we talked a while !!

I never saw either of those Craftsman boxes. Now I'm starting to wish I had spent more time at PIR. Some of my best finds came from there on Thursday.

There's always next year!

For those of you not familiar with the big swap meet weekend here in Portland, there are actually two automotive swap meets running concurrently, but independently of each other.

Portland International Raceway (PIR - my former employer) started running their own swap meet because of the traffic nightmare caused by the Portland Automotive Swap Meet beginning the first Friday in April. PIR has a 1.9 mile road course and infield paddock that is lined start to finish with thousands of vendors. Combine that qith the event at the Portland Expo Center, and you have four days of cool stuff to look at.

I was worn out by midday Saturday!

Man, those big Portland swaps sound like a blast.

Smoke- I wonder if that Proto wrench is a Whitworth with the W.

They sure are great ! You may be correct about the w being a whitworth. Still not very common . Can anyone else shed some light on it ?

A 3/8 Whitworth wrench has a .724 inch opening and Proto did make Whitworth wrenches.

Guy said his company bought it and he bought it from them damaged with intention of fixing it. He said it was relatively new but they would not warranty it. I unloaded it and got it inside the shop to have a better look and it is NOT damaged. The topmost fin is cracked but it does not appear to affect the cylinder as I first thought. I plan to make a couple gaskets and put it back together(seller had the center head off) then try it out and get a real diagnosis of whats up. BTW, the tank is dated 2015.

Edit: He actually said that the middle cylinder was sucking so that's why he had it apart, isn't it supposed to **** on a 3 cylinder single stage? He never hooked it up because he doesn't have 240v in his shop and the quote he got to run a wire was more than he wanted to deal with so he listed it instead of putting it back together.

Another expensive day for me.
There have been certain items on my want/need list for a few years now. Unfortunately, they all seem to be showing up all in the same month as my money is running out.

First the wall cabinets (want)
Then the pipe staging (want/need - could still use a few more sections)
Next was the larger TV. (frivolous want, I admit)
A new storage tent to replace the one that collapsed this winter. (MUST HAVE, thanks for HF coupons)
Now it's a Sickle Mower (desperately needed, but only twice a year)

The few times I've seen them listed on CL, they're either way overpriced or gone by the time I call. Most only seem to last a few hours before someone scoops them up.
This time, I was the guy. :bounce:

It was listed for 12hrs when I called, and I was the first one to contact him.
It was supposed to be about an hour drive, but because I had to drive through Boston, it took MUCH longer. Then on the drive home, I got stuck in rush hour traffic. Round-Trip, I was in the truck (with a trailer) for 5hrs. I hit EVERY FREAKIN' RED LIGHT in the state, both ways. :tantrum2:

So, here's the $300 prize :

a genuine Troy-Bilt (GARDEN WAY :rocker:) mod#34034 Sickle Mower.
42" bar
5hp B&S Quantum engine

This thing looks like it was only used once or twice in it's thirty-some-odd year history. (correction - 23yrs) Then hermetically sealed in a storage vault. It starts on the first pull, and the oil is used but still clear (I'll change it anyway). All the stickers are still mint !

The only issue is that two teeth on the bar are broken, but I should be able to replace them easily once I track down the part.

The seller and I spent a little time discussing Tools, Lawn Machines, Craftsman, MTD :thefinger , and company mergers. While our jaws were flapping, he showed me a pile of metal and tools his buddy dropped off for scrap. He hadn't sorted through it yet, but planned on pulling out the good stuff. I saw a Brinks and Cotton 6" c-clamp, Owatonna Tool Co. slide hammer, and a cute little green metal tray on top of it all. I told him I'd give him a few bucks for the tray. He told me to take it. :D

FREE :
hammered green S-K 3/8dr metric socket tray from a #13 7mm-19mm set.
No sockets
The tray is missing the handle/locking bar, but otherwise in good condition.
It has clips on the back to hang on the side of a toolbox.
The original price in the 70's was $9.98 !
I didn't notice the size marks until I looked at the photo. They're hard to see in person.

100_2478.jpg

So, that's it. I think I'm tapped out for a while. We'll have to see if I can find a new source of funding if I'm going to continue to play.

Picked up this craftsman belt/disc sander with an Atrix express vac hepa vacuum used as a dust collector setup. It's pretty nice the simple way someone added dust collection to the belt side. Paid $90.

I wonder how accurate the 2/3Hp is. I cross referenced the model number 137.215360 to a Rexon bd46a which i believe is Taiwan .

You might be right about 30, but it's definitely more than 20. MTD bought out Garden Way/Troy-Bilt somewhere around 1994 (+/-), and then proceeded to cheapen the brand. The GW built machines are tanks. I have a TB wood chipper from the 80's that just won't die.

I can't remember how to decipher the B&S code to determine the date of the motor. I'll have to look it up again when I have time. I just saw 82 on the plate at a quick glance and it stuck in my head.

No problem--but the date code code starts with the "94"--
Engine was built almost 23 years ago.. She's awfully clean..

Interesting the groove in that machined piece, the angle along with the green belt makes me thing someone was grinding their tungsten electrodes maybe?

Not really a garage sale--but it was in a garage when the sale was completed..

Fellow on CL listed a "bench with a vise" for $35.. The Wilton's are so identifiable thankfully--I could spot it in the crappy pictures.. Texted and called the guy--agreed to sell the vise-still for $35--I obviously agreed!

Three hour round trip and met an interesting urban cowboy dude.. The vise has one of the swivel base mounting ears busted off-just have to locate a replacement.. Good deals are sometimes not so obvious--got lucky on this one!

Looks a lot like a toner vac, did the PO report it worked OK for sawdust ?
They use a bag if I remember correctly (old copier repair guy here).

Love getting to a sale first !
Found an ad an hour old yesterday on CL, and went by after work.
Picked up some small but interesting goodies.
They cleaned up nicely and I posted the anvil over in the Vintage section trying to find what is it used for.

That appears to be a very well carved railroad track anvil someone made.. Just judging based on the size-

Thanks for looking but it's too thin. I can set it next to a track anvil this evening .
It could be still be railroad track even if it's thin. Back in the day rail road stuff was lighter and didnt need as thick of track. Plus special lines for mining or factories and such get recycled too and they are often smaller than regular railroad tracks. They also make crane tracks that are smaller too.

That doesnt mean it is railroad track (or other track) but there isn't just 1 size fits all tracking.

RedVise: i wonder if some creative guy made your anvil out of some I beam. i've seen some guys use their company's huge milling machines to make some very cool stuff out of steel scraps just laying around on their lunch breaks.

yours isn't a true anvil, but it is COOL

It has been a long time since I posted, but reading this thread is a daily requirement for me. I finally took the time to sit down and post up some items I have come across this year.

First up are a few random items I picked from an old shop across town from me. I went there expecting great stuff, but it was more of a mess and more run down than enything. Fortunately, I was able to find a few nice items.

For $20 I walked away with:
Sure Strike framing hammer
Wards Master Hewing Ax
Double Bit Ax Head with the letters "TP" stamped into one face
Craftsman Metric Combination Wrenches
8" Draw Knife

Yard-Sale-1.jpg

Thanks, jawoodworking

Eagle flammable liquid storage cabinet - $40.

I've been looking for a smaller cabinet that wasn't too beat up.

Picked up this Speedaire 13 gallon air tank this morning for $20. As I was loading it up in the back of my truck my neighbor that came with me was saying that would be perfect for him to stick under his table and hook up to his little pancake air compressor to have more capacity, so I let him have it. I didn't really have a planned use for it, but for $20 I couldn't pass it up.

Grainger wants more for that little thing than what you could but a 60 gallon air compressor for!

Just a stock photo since I didn't take one before unloading it at my neighbor's house.

Jason: He may cook that pancake compressor with that much capacity. I cooked mine just topping off tires without a larger tank.

Waltrip: Cool Find! I stil want a full size Flammables...

JA: That hatchet is my favorite style. it looks good and those have a hardened steel insert inlaid into the flat side. So harder to get the edge, but it holds it well! You can see it when you clean the head.

I've put a longer handles on them so its 26-30" for a better swing and harder bite. I have one in each of my trailers for camping. I should do one more for the garage...

They also made really light rails for mine carts, and I've also seen a lot of that for salt pond harvesting. the lay the ties on top and then lay rails and use that to haul the salt to processing.

I have a number of different rail based objects around, and I'm not sure any are the same "Gauge"

Spending the week in Dayton, OH, and meetings finished at 1 PM so I ran down the highway to a home shop estate sale. Big garage with big equipment (mill, lathe, metal brake, surface grinder) and big prices. Even the little stuff was steep, but by 2 in the afternoon, any bargains were mostly long gone. I picked up a few items that I needed for my tool box, and one to flip.

1/2" Central Pneumatic air ratchet--$15

Not a bargain, but cheaper than new (as long as it works)

Misc box of gear pullers and assoc screws--$10

Been wanting to supplement my current stash

Smith-Gates Roof & gutter 100' de-icer kit--$2

Looks unused, also a bargain if it works...

I bought it at a manufacturing company that went out of business. I looked up the vacuum and it says it's made for fine particulate. It has a HEPA filter with just a canister, no bag.

An expensive week for me. Must be the spring weather in the northeast.
53 pound anvil, Parker 384-1/2, and a bonus Stanley ball peen hammer. $250

Bagged, that Spring weather sure brought a few garage sale signs out to the street corners.

Nice to see everybody getting out.

These finds are from Sunday's flea market. I went to a different one and it turned out pretty good.

I gave $20 for these two boxes of misc. wood working tools and handles. Some chisels and carving tools. Some hammer handles, chisel and file handles.

A lot of junk but a few gems. A couple of Eifel Plierwrench jaws and a neat A PLOMB gouge in there.

Also, separate finds:

Pic 1 - Osborne tack hammer and picks, unidentified ball peen, Dunlap Germany chisel.

Pic 2- A few 1/4" Hallowell sockets to go with the handle I picked up recently. Didn't think I'd find these in a bin of sockets.

Pic 3- An odd spanner wrench, a few sockets- Wright, SO, unknown square opening 9/32' drive knurled socket- I think it could be an early Snap on, and extensions-1/4 S-K and Craftsman.

Pic 4- Ratchets. 1/2 Penens, 3/8 Fleet, 1/4 Craftsman female, 3/8 Thorsen, 3/8 Williams, 3/8 Action, 1/4 JCPenney - happy to find that one.

The seller picked it up, showed me and said JCPenney???. I said great that's just the kind of stuff I'm looking for I'll take it! After, I showed my girl and she said JCPenney??? Then I showed her father and he said JCPenny! Hah!!!

Also, New Britain and Snap On combos and a Snap On chisel.

Spent probably another $20 on this stuff.

Well found, 3bay!

Still in Dayton, and visited some old friends from when we lived here. Dan is a retired machinist, and when he heard I had a lathe, he insisted on giving me this toolbox and a whole bunch of tooling that he said was just getting rusty sitting in his shed.

Here are a few pics of the toolbox. It kinda looks like a Gerstner, but it has an outer metal skin, vice a wood finish. Dan said it was old when he got it.
