So I think I did OK today. Got this stuff from a coworker who's husband recently retired. It is a KRA4114 top, KRA4107 bottom, and KRA3830 side cabinet stuffed with tools. A lot of Snapon, Proto, and Blue Point, plus a bunch of precision tools I will prob never touch. All for $250

So far I have only gone through the top box. Most of this will end up on Craigslist to pay for a new band saw...lol I just plan on keeping the boxes and basic hand tools.

Talk about hitting the jackpot. U ****.

Estate sale pick ups. Snap On, plomb, Craftsman, and bonney. Highlight for me was the speedmaster 3/8" drive ratchet.

Simple Green and elbow grease. Take it slow. The SG will also remove the original paint if you let it soften it.

Ok guys how did I do? I'm new this. I went to my first estate sale and made my first Craigslist purchases. Got the following:

Tool box with some misc tools $5
A file cabinet drawer of vintage maps (something I'm kind of into) $40
Nesting wrench set $10 (with neat little holder)
~15 files for $2 ea
4 drawer file cabinet $10
Small file set $10
2 hammers for $2 and $5
Sharpening stones $2-3 ea
Champion channellocks $3
Screwdriver $0.50
Chinese 28 piece transfer punch set $10
4' craftsman level $20
Drill index $15
Small parts bin w/ bolts $15
7 gallon water jug $5
3 gallon water jug $2
Mattock $5
Snow shovel $2
Large cargo net with thick nylon edge w grommets $5
4 twin drawer card catalogs (big ones) $3 ea (that file in drawer is 14.5")
1 small twin drawer $5

And now the vises:

Columbian with 4" jaws $30
Columbian gyro with 3.5" jaws $25
Littco/ Howe and Fdry vise 3.5" jaws $25
Chinese 3" "Pony" clamp on vise $10

Total was just under $350 including 3% credit card charge and tax.

I kind of got carried away and some deals were much better than others, but in total it's all useful stuff to me for an overall decent price. The craftsman level was the least appealing price. The card catalogs, vises, files, snow shovel, file cabinet, and cargo net were pretty good deals.

What do you think? How did I do?

Hope the photos load ok. I'm uploading pics for the first time (and from my phone).

Bargainhuntingking: that's a big haul! The individual prices seem good, but the total seems high-ish for what you pictured. I think you get some suckage on the Gyro-vise score. BTW, did the sale allow bundling and bargaining? Some companies are pretty strict: "Prices as marked, no discounts for quantity or bundling! !" Others will deal with you, especially on the last day.

Welcome to the thread and keep posting!

Bargainhuntingking:

I like the Columbian gyro 3.5" jaw vise and the orange Columbian vise with 4" jaws, as it has a different older style look than most Columbians I've seen in the past.

Despite the pouring rain went to a couple sales...

I've been wanting a jointer/planer for a while, found this 4" craftsman one for $30. It's missing the guard, and the table it's on is falling apart, and the cord is all cracked and brittle... It runs good though. Previous owner made like a drawer under it to catch the wood shavings, kind of smart. I'm really only planning on using this for edge jointing so it should serve my needs just fine till I find something larger that is cheap.

CMan screwdriver toolholder still new, $2. 10" 40-tooth sawblade, $1. A couple edge clamps, $2. Spray paint, .50c each. A little tote with a drawer on the bottom, $1. Also I got a box of 25 1/2"x4" or 5" pipe ******* for $2.50.

Other sale had some nice 3M air filters that fit one of my returns, also got a long 30A SO extension cable that should work well with my garage heater so now I can move it around the garage more.

The 4" Columbian is a model #804. The only ad I've found for it is from 1949.
I've never seen the pipe jaws the ad mentions.
This steel plate vise was only made for a short time after the war, and only in the 4" size. The original color was red, and there would have been a paper sticker on the side, or front jaw, with the model number on it.

Look on the side where the name is stamped. You may find the model number also stamped there, but it tends to be lightly stamped and hidden by the paint.

I've lost count, but yours may be only # 7 or 8 ever posted on GJ. I have 2 and another member has 3, which accounts for most of them.

Because they're hard to find, and I really wanted it, I intentionally over-paid at $50 for one of mine, I inherited the other. I think $30 is at the top of the correct value for this vise. Rare, but not necessarily saught after. It's a good light/mid duty vise that's surprisingly tough for its size and weight.

An excellent find.

Thanks for your info on that Columbian #804.

Will be another vise I'll be looking for when I'm out.

Decided to go back to same sale went to on Friday, in part because not many GS in the area due to weather.

Some of items that I was looking for had sold, but did pick up the following.

Pic 1--Box of 3/32 Cotter Pins at 3/4 length, Xcelite HS-6-18 and Xcelite PS-120. Neither complete, Clamp #540 by Cincinnati Tool Co, offset chisel, Herbrand drain plug wrench #193, putty knife and Dunlap handsaw tooth setter.

Pic 2 & 3--Saw these rollers the other day at YS and noticed that they were magnetized. Length of each individual roller is 10 inches and are 1 inch diameter.

The 9 roller section rollers are screwed in to the metal frame, while the 5 roller section rollers are tack welded to their frames.

Ended up getting all that they had at YS, as think the individual rollers can be re-purposed by using either wood or metal (i.e. think dowels) and used to hold things like tools, knives, etc.

The rain has been clear for a couple of days, it was sunny, there were lots of sales listed in CL... and only four seemed worth stopping based on pics/descriptions... :wtf:

That pretty much described the sales too; Promising but not a lot going on... Of the four I got a few odds and ends at the first stop nothing at #2, #3 wasn't, and #4, nothing.

Without a couple of TOO's, really bad. Some of the TOO's I recognized from the CL ads I was not impressed with enough to schedule, and they weren't either. Only TOOs that were not listed had anything at all... :eyecrazy:

The water drought may be over here on the left coast, but the YS drought is sticking hard...

The first YS promised "Camping gear" and tools; A quick shade and a red folding cloth chair, and a Chinese matok... :dunno:

I never saw a single hand or power tool for the garage anywhere. (dang few yard tools...)

I've NEVER seen it this bad. I'm about ready to try the big fleas after ignoring them for more than 20 years...

So the "haul" is not very impressive!

First YS: batteries, Bulbs, what feels like a full can of dust-off, plus the short glass Pot tray stack soaking in the sink - $5

attachment.php

attachment.php

Everything else was from various TOO's:

Two Aluminum Water Bottles - these may become fuel bottles; restocking some 000 steel wool, and a half full box of the fire starters 12 all told. five bucks

attachment.php

A SS water fire extinguisher. $3; Hopefully the O-ring is good. Not a lot else to go wrong other wise. this may go into my camp gear for spare water and "just in case". I once used one of these to hose out a deer I shot...

attachment.php

$5 for an unused Oak display cabinet, with the still covered plexi cover. This will get added to the hallway "huntin/fishin/campin" displays for some of the small items currently sitting on top of shadow boxes.

got a week end off, so yall know what that means! Got up quick at around 645 and got after it! small town 10 miles from me has a city wide garage sale thing going on. I decided to hit it first because one of the sales says tools in its listing. Hit three on the way and didnt really find much. As I pull up to the tool sale..... BAM!! Anvil sin the drive way! Tool Boxes everywhere! Tables of tools! I jumped out of my pickup and ran up there like a kid on Christmas morning. Hes got tons of good stuff! But... come to find out hes been a mechanic and a Tool collector for over 50 years. Now at 85 he is selling some stuff. Got to talking and knew some of the same good folks, made a new freind. Asked him if he had any Plomb out as I didnt see any on my first round. He says nah its all back in my shops. Wanna go see? Hell yea! We go back and hes got THREE shops wall to wall filled with everything you can imagine... Shelving filled with homemade wooden boxes with big labels on them: SNAP ON THORSEN WILLIAMS PLOMB PROTO BLACKHAWK ...ect... roll a rounds all over, vises, anvils.... I was like WOW!! He showed me to the Plomb section and I looked thought a huge lot and bought a wf ratchet and a pebble wrench I dont have yet. I looked around at some great stuff. I asked if he by chance had any PLOMB boxes. He said only one rusty beat up one he thinks. He takes me over to another shop and there it is, a 3/4 or 1" drive set box I think. Its not in great shape but it matches my other pre WW2 boxes. Brought it home with a few other things. We exchanged info and numbers and he wants me to come help him with sales and such in the future. Invited me to come by any time to buy sale swap tools. Great guy!
Heres what I brought home from his place and the Flea market:

Big Plomb Set box
WF38 1/2 Ratchet
1214 7/16 combo pebble
033 5/8 Caulking tool

4" Craftsman adjustable in great shape smooth
6" Williams adjustable
8" P&C adjustable

Circle H Craftsman 1/4 breaker
3/8 Craftsman ratchet
1/4 Craftsman ratchet

Severeal wrenches including Thorsens, Williams, and Bonneys.

A box full of 3/8 and few 1/2 Craftsman, Mustang, Williams, SnapOn, and Bonney
sockets

Couple of Apex Phillips driver sockets

Yellow Trister handle screwdriver no markings but kinda neat

P&C 2232 DBE wrench

The water drought may be over here on the left coast, but the YS drought is sticking hard...

I've NEVER seen it this bad. I'm about ready to try the big fleas after ignoring them for more than 20 years...

You may recall my observation at the time that you might have created a garage sale wormhole with that $5 tackle box o' Snap-on find.

Hope things pick up for ya.

Today wasn't pouring rain like yesterday, it was only light misting (all day so far though... :( )

There was an "all tool sale" advertised so that was the goal to get there first. Looks like a decent amount was already sold and we showed up about 30 min after opening time. Prices were high, like basically eBay prices and they weren't negotiating at all... There was a nice Stanley No. 6 hand plane I liked with the corrugated bottom, but they wanted $40 for it. I had no real need for it so I passed...

All I got was a ball peen hammer $4, not sure of the brand? Close-up pic attached. Also got a 12" Proto Los Angeles for $4 adjustable wrench. Craftsman DOE for $1, and a cigar box full of misc stuff for $1.

Might try going back tomorrow if it is half-price day, there were a few other things I liked too...

The two oil can spouts I bought at a garage sale, .75 for the pair.

Earthway pull-behind spreader I found at a garage sale down the street from the tool sale. It was half-price there so I only paid $7.50 for it, and the nice old ladies had hot coffee and homemade cookies!

Found a toaster oven NIB for $10 which I've kind of been wanting so I don't always have to heat up my oven for something small...

Decided to hit up this other estate sale that we passed by going to the first one. This house was WAY up on the side of a mountain, very narrow & steep one-lane twisty road going up there. Wouldn't you know it two other cars were coming down as we were going up... Though my side was a drop-off, theirs was just some light brush... lol. Anyhow, it was a REALLY nice house, lots of nice furniture. Garage was already picked over, work shed was already picked over.... Saw a greenhouse off to the side, figured why not... Found part of a CMan radial arm saw in there for $5! I picked it up and water poured out of the motor  It had the old-style blade cover, so guess who's going to cash it in for $100... :)

Oh, went back to estate sale from yesterday since it was half-off today there too... Got a little webber Smokey Joe charcoal grill for $7, in the box, looks like it was used once. My neighbor found lots of little things and haggled his hoard down to just a few dollars.

Money is tight right now (again) but I needed to get out of the house for a bit, so today I played a mind game with myself.

I mapped out a couple stops for the day, then waited until it was almost closing time before going out. I figured that with the rain, they'd all close early. I was right. They were all closed when I got there.

So, I got to go to a couple sales, and other than the gas, I didn't spend any money.

Tomorrow will be a tougher challenge. The local flea is finally supposed to open for the season. It won't be an easy morning for me.

If you were going to spend the gas money driving there, you should have gone when they were open. You never know if you could score an awesome deal to flip for some spare $$$... If I didn't bother going to the last sale I did, I wouldn't have found a $5 CMan radial arm saw to cash in for $100... ;)

I also like going late on the last day of estate sales. They just want to get rid of all they can and will almost give it away. I've had quite a few great finds that way and couldn't believe that others missed what was hiding in plain sight.

I stopped at about 16 sales this morning and found NOTHING. Then went to the local Restore and they recently got in TONS of hardware. They still have a whole pallet to go through. I got the following for $60.

Wow, you guys are really killing it this week. Some awesome hauls.

I see a couple new names. Welcome and thanks for stopping in. More finds posted means more fun.

Jake: almost (nice) grilling weather. Almost.

Dkroth: where abouts did you go to?

Funny story:

Today I hit my first yard sale of the season! I was on my way home and caught the glimpse of a sign. No tools in sight but I asked anyway.

The guy having the sale said I have this box I want to get rid of and you can take it all with the work light for 5 bucks. I said okay.

I should have declined because I realized who the guy was, only after agreeing to the purchase.

He's a big jerk. Years back he cheated my good friend out of his prize money winnings from a fantasty football league. This guy hosted the league and never paid up when my buddy won the season.

The guy's wife is a real miserable person too. Worked as a store clerk for years, and always a sour puss. Never even says hello to people who know her.

Well now the funny thing is I bought a stag ticket from my buddy after work yesterday for his cousin's stag. The ticked was $25. I gave my friend a $20 bill, 4 singles, and 4 quarters and told him sorry about the change. I had thrown a $5 bill in my pocket for him to go with the 20, but it literally got soaked with sweat during work.

Well guess who got the sweat 5 today? Mr fantasy football yard sale!

My buddy loved it when I told him. Funny to us anyway.

Not much in the box though. A Craftsman wrench and screwdriver. Some Truecraft wrenches. Mostly cheap stuff.

My second stop was on the way home today.

Driving through some back streets I haven't been down in years. There was a house with a lawn lined with stuff. Looked like a yard sale but all at the curb neatly.

I stopped the car and asked this man in the doorway if he was having a sale. He said take whatever you want. I'm putting it all out for free.

Well, he had lots of usable household stuff. I grabbed a few things.

A Gedore India metric wrench set, a bit screwdriver set, caulk gun, a small sheet of aluminum, a, PC keyboard, and some new drawer pulls.

This KRA380 (1978) was missing the second drawer from the bottom. The PO said he never had it. That drawer is a unique 4.25" height (those other two above it, more commonly found, are 4.00"). It's a long story, but I had that drawer (now pictured here). No key, but everything works smoothly and there's no damage or rust. This will replace a KRA377D that doesn't have the drawers in the bottom. $85.

THE STREAK CONTINUES.....

Just when all hope was lost on finding anything, I discovered an estate sale of an old machinist that had sadly passed. He kept everything he owned IMMACULATE..... This is what I picked up after making mad package deals with one of the workers running the estate sale

NEW Craftsman USA wrenches - $50 for all, some will go to my box and the rest will be resale
Craftsman Aluminum sander - $10, almost like I just went back to the 50's or 60's and bought it off the shelf
Sander/drill, aluminum bodied - $12.50, good to have, couldn't pass it up!
3 cast iron bread pans - $10 for all, only need a light clean and season and were good to go! Made by Lodge as well
Brand new reamers, tap holders, and a cutter - $20
M2 tool bits, some are full of stock - $10

Now for the cream of the crop.....

AS CLOSE TO MINT AS I HAVE EVER SEEN..... Gray and red Craftsman top chest, this thing is in the best shape ive ever seen and was NEVER restored, found as is with the top tray as well. As soon as I saw this my eyes almost popped out of my sockets, It also came with all the keys to both a mid and bottom chest I believe, ill be selling the keys that don't go with the top chest but I DO have the key to the top chest! The slides move like butter - $40

What was already sold....
A nearly mint King Seeley floor standing drill press and this beautiful thing for $600.... I think if both werent already sold I would be broke right now or have a loan in my name

Drove up to a Midwest Tool Collectors meet in VA with a buddy. I couldn't pass on this Peddinghaus body hammer, looks like it has never been used. Also picked up a bluepoint dolly from the same seller. Quality body tools in good shape are hard to find around here.
