Not sure if this belongs here, this is a Craigslist buy.

Harbor Freight tool grinder. HF used to sell these for around $100, then they stopped selling them. Now they're available from Grizzly for $295. I got this as pictured for $30.00.

Nice score!

Why is it confusing? Snap-On's own date code charts shows they stand for 44/45:dunno:

I did see some idiot selling an "Emergency" (E coded) snap-on set on ebay though.........:lol_hitti

"Confusion" is not my word to justify, but...
Every single character on the date code chart is a numeral, but these two are letters. (1931, 1932, 1933 are nonalphanumeric; the prior codes are numerals in a very prosaic typeface. The actual stamps on tools show some stylistic variation even into the early forties. Seems SO needed a three-years breather to figure how to distinguish decades of production once it became clear they would survive their first.)
In a field of numerals, the two orphan letters cry out for explanation, and Emergency and Governmant (or perhaps General) just spring to mind, flowing from FDR's declaration of a National Emergency, and the alloy restrictions it entailed.
"Snapon 's own date code chart" is clearly and obviously a product of a much later time, a sort of retcon, thus does nothing to explain the choices the early company execs made.

Pretty sure it's a "G"

While the drawings and the stamps can get a bit iffy you have to watch for the major character features, for which is which sometimes...

Picked up this Snap On KR278B at the flea marked this past Sunday. I paid $60 and thought it was a fair price.

I went to my first estate auction a few weeks ago, there was a lot of tools in the advertised pictures and I was interested in a hard to see vise and Block grinder on a stand. There were a bunch of guns that went for good prices but the tools seemed to be going for high prices. I gave up long ago into the bidding on a mint 3/4 CM socket set that went over 190 - didn't get the block either (60+ the stand was shoddy)as it was near the end of the auction and I figured I'd just bid on the vise . It was a reed 104r looking in good condition. I was sure it was going to go for top dollar. I did win a sears spray gun for 10 -it's old compressor went for 100. So finally at the end of the day (hot and tired being outbid a lot) we made it to the vise . Bidding started at 50 and didn't take so it dropped to 25 - I bid and to my disbelief nobody else did and I won it - so it made my day worth while. Not knowing anything about reeds I have since discovered that the split nut was missing (maybe why no interest) but it's given me a lil project to work on.

Good thing I didn't get that block because I wouldn't have made a deal on this blue point 1hp grinder with baldor dust control system on stand - $150 I was the high bidder in an auction but didn't meet reserve so I ended up paying it. Might be abit overkill for my needs but another project to work on. I have the other safety glass shield but one of the spark guard/light holders is broken other than that it needs a good cleaning / restoration.

Absolutely, Craigslist finds are welcome . A lot of guys post their CL finds.

That picture was horrible. Lets try this again from the computer this time. Sure looks like a G, just not very much like the G on either date code chart.

Where has WNYFlyer been? I thought I was reaching for a leather stamp in the bottom of a box but look what it says (picture inverted):

Pictures of the spinner. Usually I don't go for homemade stuff like this. It was in with a bunch of machinist made items like a v block and gauge holder. I wonder what the square came from. Maybe an old extension, maybe not.

Orange Craftsman AND Bell System tools in the same post? What a day!

:) Surprised me too, considering all the yard sale table people didn't show due to weather postponement and there were very few regulars even open. The place is big though, so always a chance of finding something.

Edit: I didn't realize Bell used Lindstrom Sweden pliers. I figured strictly USA.

Some of the goodies that have come my way lately.
Atlas drill index, Cman corner clamps, couple of auto body dollys and my personal favorites, clamp on vises.
The little black one has removeable jaws to boot !

I think its just "Flavor of the day" to try to get in the SO mode to satisfy more "wants", since if you think about it, how often does a person need to buy a replacement screwdriver?

What's the significance of the Red/Clear (no blue) Craftsman screwdrivers? I have a phillips one like that but don't know anything about it.

Not sure really. Always thought they weren't special or anything, just a style that was made for a bit a decades ago in between the red blue/blue clear. :dunno:

The solid colored ones yes. Sears used to sell them real cheap in the stores too.

Yes. I remember needing a stubby screwdriver one day in the early nineties and buying the solid orange one because it was priced lower. Has the additional advantage of high visibility when you don't recall where you had it last.
The rest of this is pure speculation based on vague memory, despite working a month in replenishment (stockboy) in a Sears hardware department in 1995. I really thought I'd like it, but it was the worst job I've ever held, mostly because of the people I worked with.
I thought the color stripes on the clear handles were to distinguish the types of drivers. At one point, slots had red and philips blue? Then torx and square and star were something else, maybe gray or black. I think the system got muddled from the proliferation of drive styles. And maybe customers figured they could tell what drive they were holding by looking at the business end, and wanted their whole set to match in the handles.

Scored this plomb 9998 top box off another member here... Not a true garage sale score but still got it second hand and it is old so I don't think anyone will mind! It is missing 2 slides so if someone has and small pressteel slides laying around I could use some. The box has no rust and weighs 77lbs[emoji3] it even came with a key ! I promised the prior owner I would keep the patina

Man, last weekend there were over 200 sales listed in the area on CL... This weekend practically nothing... Guess everyone is either GS out, or because of mother's day...

Smoke: well your Plvmb was originally found at a garage sale a while ago. :D

nice find and i'm glad to hear you like it more than you appeared to when i helped you load it in your rig. it should clean up nicely and isn't it nice to find these old PRE WWII boxes with most of their original equipment like the front and a key with a working lock? best of luck finding or making a couple slides and taking out a few dings in the drawers, but i'm sure i won't get a chance to buy it back. or will I?

ALL: stopped to pick up a vise and picked up a few extras while i was there. the vise is a Prentiss #5 that has 6 inch jaws and weighs about 130 pounds. i just saw on the main vise thread that a member posted a patent regarding Prentiss' removable jaws that was granted in 1911 so this vise pre dates that. other than a slightly bent handle, small chips of cast missing off the back of the swivel jaw and some vise grip marks on the pin that holds the swivel jaw in place, and maybe the serrations in the jaw are worn smooth this vise is in pretty decent shape.

i'm not sure what all the tools are that i picked out of a bucket so feel free to let me know if you see something you'd like to talk more about. the seller uses his 3/4 inch Proto L.A. ratchet and sockets for everyday use, but was willing to sell me his older Plvmb ratchet and it isn't any little thing.

I bought a "Sparta"-branded 3/8" socket extension today at the used tool shop. The owner had never heard of that brand, and it was worth the $2 to hold it up and say ""this is Sparta".........

FINALLY! We are starting to turn this show around!

$20 well spent! Most of the C-clamps are Brink & Cotton with a Wilton and a pair of Judds thrown in. I alway seem to run out of C-clamps be enough for certain projects, so this should help.

A trip through the rust remover and it should all be looking pretty good.

Maybe if you where to oh, let's say, maybe find a tool mobile. Other than that , I would be hard pressed to let it go. I did not show much emotion but was freaking out inside [emoji3]

Been away for a while (no not in jail) and good to be back reading all your posts. Ill be reading for a while then post some of the cool finds in the past several months. My favorite, though, was this Stanley mitre box.

Haven't posted my finds in a while because I have been out of town selling at auto swap meets, time to catch up.

I bought some more stuff from the widow I have been helping. Probably overpaid a bit since I am reselling it but she needed the money.

Pic 1: I got this Black and Decker 1556 Type 3 magnetic drill press and bits for $160. Drill works fine. I don't know where I put the box of bits in my disorganized garage at the moment LOL. This will help drill the holes in my welding bench project with the 5/8 thick steel top.

Pic 2 and 3: I bought the Snap On, Craftsman and Young Bros letter punches for about $180 IIRC. Most of this I will probably sell.

The other pictures are items I picked up at Pate and Canton TX auto swap meets.

Pic 4: Most of these tools came in a box of tools I bought for $25. It includes from bottom to top, Action, Armstrong, Barcalo, Bonney, Plomb, Herbrand Indestro, MF, P&C, Proto, Challenger, S-K, 2 Snap On 18mm reversible ratcheting wrenches for $10 each, Thorsen, Vlchek and others.

Pic 5: Most of these tools came in the box lot including the DBE wrenches, the USA made Dewalt 10" wire wheels were $25 for both and will go on my Baldor.

Pic 6: The Craftsman I picked up, Crown label hedge trimmers $10, Dado blades $10, the ring compressor was in the box lot. The utility knife was 50 cents and the Sears Painting pamphlets were $5 for all three and some more pamphlets.

Pic 7: This Craftsman mailbox grinder I got for $10 for parts, it does run.

Stopped at the Restore yesterday and got the following for $35.

- BIG Old Bench Grinder, Not sure on maker
- Craftsman Underline Wrenches and BE 1/2 Extension
- Walden Ratchet, PECK STOW AND WILCOX Adj, Square
- German Wire Wheel
- Klein Strippers
- Interesting Hammer
- Almost New Milwaukee Sheet Sander

So basically, you got a nearly half-price sander and everything else was free! Well done!

Oh, and if you're not attached to the PS&W adjustable, you might bring it to the June meet-up for swapping fodder. I don't have one of that brand...

Will do! Consider it yours.

That reminds me that I have to sort through my hoard and get a bin full for the swap meet.:lol_hitti

Today I picked up a Yost 204 in pretty good shape, and yesterday I bought a Bonney R701 3/4" drive ratchet and 22 sockets. The sockets have definitely seen better days. Most of the sockets are Indestro. Some are Craftsman circle K stamped. They are in the worst shape and currently reside in a container of Evapo-rust. I'll probably clean up and resell the 3/4" stuff as I already have a full 3/4 set, but I'll find a place to use the Yost. $35 total for both was too good to pass up.

I found this Hon four drawer filing cabinet on the side of the road in a rich neighborhood in Concord, Mass. It had a few pock marks of rust, but was otherwise fine. Fortunately for me, I just happened to be driving my daughter's '65 Malibu 4-dr instead of my usual Mustang. And don't you know that Malibu back seat swallowed up that cabinet without even a burp!

I've been looking for one of these for the office, and free is the best price. Oh, and I checked -- there was no envelope full of money taped to any of the drawers.46631ef488dcbf1ddd6640618617ca15.jpg6812f46687ed3975f39b87d8b995c0c2.jpg

What is this used for? Picked this up the other day from a pawn shop. I had no idea what it was used for so I had to get it. I didnt want to start a new thread, any ideas? The shaft says 7/16 and a patent number.

Hey gang...it's me again. I've been lurking for too long.

Anyway, I just posted tonight the last item (and neatest item too, I think), that I found on my trip to the 127 Yard Sale last summer. I posted it under the VINTAGE TOOL DISCUSSION forum.

It is a really interesting antique tool kit. I didn't want to post it in two locations, so I thought maybe I would list one photo here, and ask you to please take a look at it over there, and give me your input on what you think it was for. Thanks in advance!

Well this whole page has to be one of the more interesting pages in a while!

Bobcat I'd like to hear what that hammer is myself. What info is on it?

Lump- I checked out your post. That set is a really neat find. I hope you learn more about it.

Jwsia- I've never seen that particular tool. Interesting that it is Western Auto too. I'd could only guess what it's for. I assume the spring moves the "spanner pins"?

bluebolt- I do believe that Chopper is correct. The wrench has the Penens look. I know I've seen ratchets with that stamping that were clearly Penens also.

Wabash- 35 dollars for that 3/4 drive /vise haul earns a You **** in my book!
