2017 Garage Sale Thread

I got these two weights at a "tag sale" (they don't call 'em "yard sales" or "garage sales" in Massachusetts). My wife will use these to hold her raft in our lake, so she doesn't float out into deep water, and/or to hold down awnings in the back yard when the sun gets too hot. At $2 apiece, how could I go wrong?


at that same estate sale, I saw some older toys (1960's), but they were dirty and/or broken. However, I saw a little bundle of ski's and ski poles, which look to be the right size for Barbie and or GI Joe dolls. In my experience, some of those toys can be pricey, and their accessories are even harder to find. I invested $4 in these, hoping to be able to flip them on eBay or such.

Back to that big estate sale in Massachusetts, I asked what this guide/backstop/whatever was for, but the seller didn't know. I couldn't see any tools around the sale that it might have fit, and the seller swore that nothing like that had sold before I got there. I made it clear that it probably wasn't worth anything if he didn't know what it fit, and the seller agreed. So I tossed it in my pile. I doubt that it cost me any portion of the package deal, in the end. But now I have it, and have NO idea what it is for. Any ideas?

And now, for the pièce de résistance of my entire shopping trip to Massachusetts.... (drum roll please).

I found and bought a piece of vintage medical and/or scientific history at that estate sale. Neither I nor the seller had any clue what it was. But I bought it based on its age and condition, and vowed to identify it afterwards. Well, I did indeed find out what it was....

Some of you may be familiar with the movie, "Hysteria," set in 1880, when doctors were treating women for a condition then described as "Hysteria." (The medical and scientific history behind this movie are TRUE.)

In effect, when women of a certain age suffered from "hysteria," doctors would massage them in a specific way until they felt "better." One young enterprising doctor who was tired of wearing out his arms, hands, and wrists, finally invented a machine to assist him in this endeavor. Thus, this antique machine really was a "TOOL," which is absolutely appropriate for Garage Journal. Don't you agree?

Check out this "Shelton" brand medical/scientific tool, and see if you can imagine what it was designed for.



Note the great condition of all those fragile glass components. Anyone want this for their "tool box?" LOL

Still more "junque" from the trip to Massachusetts:

This live ctrap was at that same estate sale. No price, so I asked seller. He said, "Oh, I don't know...3 or 4 bucks. Just put it in your pile, and we'll make a package deal." THAT, my GJ friends, is my kind of seller!


So I added more items to my pile, including this old chrome-plated fire extinguisher, at "about 10 bucks." Around here folks buy these for making lamps and such.


Nice older Coleman lantern in ragged original box. $5


Fascinating set of side cutters, with specifically designed cutting surfaces. I've never seen any like this, and have no idea what they're for. Anyone?



Very cool old cast iron pot. About 8 or 10" in diameter, and about 8" tall. Can't recall price, but it was only a buck or two.



Some writing on bottom, but haven't cleaned it off enough to read it yet. This pot also has a ring mounted on one side; presumably so you could tie a string to it to tip it over and pour from it while it was hot. Haven't seen that before.


This is enough for one post. More later.

Check the round hole for common wire gauges. I have a pair of needlenose pliers that someone modified the cutters ,so they strip 12ga wire. Incredibly useful idea.

Wow Lump! Your killing it!

Your "Chrome" fire extinguisher is actually stainless, (those tanks are pressure tested to 500 PSI!)

The lantern: painted tank or nickle plated? (Looks like a 220... not sure of the Letter designation)

The rusty "guide holdown" is just that: a drill press accessory when a mortising bit and cutter is used; the guide allows repeat cuts at the same distance from the edge of the wood, and the hold down keeps the wood from rising when the bit and cutter are retracted.

Just a quick story. Your case reminds me of a Super Bowl Sunday years ago. Driving home from a party, just my cousin and I on this dead industrial street along the rr tracks. We see a small black suitcase on the side of the road. Very, very odd and out of place for a street with truck repair shops and junkyards. My cousin says "Hey maybe there's money in it". I swing there car around, we get out and I open it up.

Well, it was some type of medical or science kit. Nothing old like yours there. Decades old maybe. It was very dark out there but I remember seeing a glass cylindrical pump and a bunch of parts all in their respective places.

My cousin says "What is it?. I jokingly said "I dunno, maybe a breast pump."

Now my immediate thought was to take it and get a positive i.d. on it. Before I had a second to think, my beer loaded cousin says "Ew" and chucks the whole case up and over the railroad tracks.

Lugz I have come across many Arrow including those withe the arrow through. I have very few examples, just started buying them the last few years. I don't think any of mine have the arrow.

On a side note, I have seen a number of their plain old open end wrenches. I thought Barcalo made those at least.

I wonder when they were making them with the "arrow-through-the-ARROW" or >>>-ARROW-> logo, like this one below, which I found awhile ago. The 10-inch on AA does not have it, and neither does dave's. How about yours, 3bay? Apart from the forged-in markings differences, I don't detect any major physical distinctions between mine, the one on AA, or dave's. Same finish, too.

Weather was nice so I decided to head to a couple sales today... First one was advertised with "hundreds of craftsman hand tools", table saw, etc, etc...

Get there, but no tools... After browsing around I ask someone if this was the place that was supposed to have a table saw and such and they told me they didn't get a chance to go through all that because their dad had to go in the hospital, so they were going to do it this next weekend... So at least I didn't miss out on anything.

I did find a nice boston electric pencil sharpener for .75 cents... (forgot to take a pic).

Next sale was an estate sale run by a family that always makes good deals. House was LOADED, lots of western stuff... Garage was... meh... No real tools or anything, and what was there I guess got hauled off quick.

Found some full bottles of stuff... A WD-40 can, Naval Jelly, Granite counter top sealer, butane fuel (for my micro torch), some termite & ant killer (bifenthrin), and liquid nails. Also, a bunch of rope in a coffee can, honing oil, small funnel, pruning shears, PVC cutter, Kobalt drill bit stops, and a made in USA die holder (with one die inside, I guess someone else bought the set).

Interesting things were the extension cord, it's just 14 gauge Stanley brand, but has a couple plugs built in-line, and it's really thick for some reason. A motor spec duluth slip-joint pliers were kind of cool, old Craftsman miter clamp, and an old Sears framing square. Lastly a Craftsman Vanadium 3/32 punch.

I also found a near full big tube of MAAS polishing compound for my neighbor.

Spent $18 total...

The extension cord is probably for Christmas lights and maybe rated for outdoor use hence the color and the heavy insulation. I have a version of that same style with outlets along its length that I use running up the spine of the Christmas Tree. It makes for easy work to plug in other strands of lights along its length.

Yeah, it's rated outdoor use and the extra plugs have covers. I think they used it for some spotlights for their christmas stuff in the yard. Cords like that are nice to have spread along instead of just like a 3-way on the ends.

I always go through a house several times. While I love tools that are priced to sell, I'm always keeping an eye out for anything interesting. I don't buy knick-knacks though, I don't like to clutter my house. I like kitchen things mostly.

I do check through the paints & chemicals though, anything unopened (or near full) I will consider. Bug killer... I'll buy a full bottle of that for like .50 cents and spray the **** out of my yard with it when they sell new at store for $5-$10 each... Polyurethane... is it possible to have too much of that??? Any solvents though I always open to give the smell test... Fertilizer is great too, both yard & plants... Some sales will just give paint / chemicals away, because otherwise they will have to pay to dispose of them. I have a 5gal container of BLO that will probably last me a lifetime... It was free, how could I say no? lol..

May 5, 1896 on each handle, misc hex keys, AutoCraft ball joint separator and a clip together wrenches from India.

Hit up an estate sale yesterday, first day so full price and no haggling. Spent $45.50.

Pic 1: Craftsman Crown label steel wool with a 69 cent price tag, Crown label 50 foot tape measure, small puller, reamer, wrench pouch with 6 wrenches in very nice shape, Dunlap DOE set with the screw clip and a Companion Forged in USA DOE.

11lb / 2.6 gal Manchester propane tank... Dated 2010 so still good for a while. I have no idea why I bought this, probably because you don't see them as often.

Pencil sharpener (.75 cents) I got yesterday, forgot to take a pic of it...

That was it for the day... Was running errands and staying inside cuz it's too hot and humid out there...

Went to a local estate sale after work today,looked like the higher end stuff pictured(Snap On) went earlier but managed to scrounge up this bag of Bonney sockets,2 Craftsman long C deepwells,a Cornwell socket,a Proto nutdriver,2 Plomb wrenches,a Bonney wrench and a Craftsman Reed Prince driver. Total cash outlay was $10.

Picked up a few odds and ends, sk driver, mac driver craftsman wrench, blue point wrench and craftsman impact driver. Every thing besides the impact driver was under a dollar.

Stopped at a barn sale and a garage sale mid-afternoon, dragging teen daughter along. She remarked that the barn smelled like our family hunting cabin, and looking around, opined that those Barnwood Builders would like this barn. I agreed - nice old timberframe structure. There was the better part of a 1/2dr SK SAE socket set with speeder and some extensions next to a larger set of mostly Taiwan. Guy said I could have the whole lot for $20, but not really what I was looking to spend. I noticed some ancient Duro/Indestro 1/2dr pieces, 2 of which it turned out I have been hunting for awhile. Also a 3/8 Craftsman 9-43796 ratchet. And the motorized ferris wheel Erector Set. Mostly nostalgia I suppose, but I already have my father's childhood set and another one from a thrift store, so I figure parts is parts.
Second stop had some unmarked heavy hammers with short handles and a Thor bare-metal drill. Also a 1/4dr socket set with sliding Tee and extension in small steel box marked Randolph Tool Equipment Co, New Jersey, and most of the sockets stamped RTEC. I had a memory of reading they were a WWII supplier, and these looked the right age, but I couldn't find the thread, and I have enough old 1/4dr partial sets to keep me busy as it is.

Edit - found the thread, but it was a different forum. Apparently they made the socket set boxes for New Britain and Craftsman.

So home and took the ratchet apart cleaned and reassembled. Dinner time!

Left work a little early this afternoon and took the oppurtunity to hit a couple estate sales. Hit 2 sales but only one was worth anything, would have liked to seen what went out the door earlier than 2:00 pm from a sale that opened at 9:00 am given the quality and prices.

Adjustables, green handled are of course Diamond's and the red handled are Klein's. Looke like these Klein's were sourced from Diamond since they look identical. $7

Hit a few Estates today, most had nothing I needed (lawn isn't big enough for a zero radius Cub Cadet) but one had the goods, enough that I wished I had got there earlier, as the prices were all over the place, but good deals where there. $11 for everything.

If anyone has a Krauter spark plug socket, I would be interested. They also had a ShopSmith, pretty complete, for $950... Why do they do that?

I didn't even look too deep into it-I just bought it, as the place was having a 20% off sale. When I got home, I found an interesting mixture of US and Taiwan tools-a full set of K-Mart wrenches (actually rather good quality), a bunch of Thorsen sockets, plus a bunch of channellocks and sidecutters of various origins. It will all go the the toolboxes I keep at my cottage. Here's a couple of oddball things that were in the box: a "flip-handle" Crescent screwdriver, made in Jamestown, NY, and a little 4-way cobbled up from a Cornwell socket, and a couple of Snap-On sockets-3/8"/ , 1/2", and 9/16". This thing will probably go into the toolkit of one of my Model As or Ts.

Those crescent screwdrivers aren't common. They made them in 4, 5, and 6 inch lengths and are from the late teens/20s. They were called a multi tool as in the folded position, the blade becomes the handle and the handle a hammer head.

I was trying to ignore the ad for this Huot top chest but after several days, my curiosity got the best of me so I made an offer of $40. When the seller replied an hour later, I thought "Damn. I don't need another tool box!".

When I got there, the women told me it belonged to her dad who had passed away 21 years ago. Around that time, she said, they had a huge garage sale and sold most of his tools. Oh, by the way, there's a few left in it if you're interested in buying them. I took one look and asked for a price. $20. Sold!

For $60 total, I got what you see here (minus the Chinese stuff her son tossed into the box a few years ago)

- Cornwell PB-6 16" lady's foot pry bar
- Barcalo-Buffalo 28-S (5/8 x 25/32) DOE wrench (this size Jeep wrench is not easy to find)
- Plomb WF-17 3/8-inch drive extension
- Indestro No. 769 (9/16 x 5/8) SUPER-QUALITY half-moon wrench

The box is an SK. Nothing special about the box, per se, but it has a well-preserved label under the lid, and I'm a sucker for a well-preserved label.

Instead of using Photobucket I went to my account on this site and created an album. Then I downloaded photo's from my computer HD to the album. Then from the album I clicked on the photo I wanted and it opens up larger and also a "BB Code" shows up. Click the "BB Code" and highlight it, then write click to copy it and then paste into your replay/thread wherever you want. Worked for me, at least I think that is the way I did it

Photo's from my camera/HD are 640x480 at about 200kb.

Also nice score on that creeper, good man cave material !
