Thanks guys, hopefully this time I'll remember. Almost picked one up a few times over the years and never thought it might be 9/32".

On another note, I haven't hit any sales in a little bit. Today the gf says she's surprised I haven't gone to any estate sales/flea markets since moving. I have bought a couple minor things off EBay to feed the need, but we'll see how long I can go. Still have yet to go through my own tools and get things cleaned and set up.

Nothing like moving to make a guy gunshy about stuff.

In 1944 they replaced the leather handle with the collapsible type metal handle. I've seen guys misidentify them as postwar, but they are definitely WWII. The paltry clasp-type locks on the Union-made boxes were made by Excelsior of Stamford, CT. I've included a photo below of the late war box with the collapsing metal handle and also one with a pair of keys, one shown n the ground, so you can see what it looked like.
My prewar Union box all the hardware says 'Union'
Do they all take the same key?

Could not find any sales today but picked up this Matco smcfsm10t 10 pc metric Crowsfoot set for $25 at a pawn shop I stopped at. I would say I did pretty well since they appear to be unused.

True. My "hobby" got out of control for a while.

Good deal!

Am i the only one to see the robot face! that guy may be my new avatar!

Hey, that's cool. I zoomed in on the vise yesterday and saw it was Ridgid, didn't even notice the face features.

I know the feeling about hobbies getting out of control. But I also see house work getting out of control too! I haven't worked on my garage cause of house projects. Lately I've been buying just stuff I think I'll need. So my style of buying has been picky.

I'm always picky, and often buy something I think I'll need; sometimes I need it ten years later is all!

Another quickie (trip to flea) w the wife netted these items for $4. $10 more bought a solid wood computer desk for our daughter. Really wish I had spotted the potbelly stove leg I need.
The L-hex socket handle has "patented Dec 12 1922" stamped on it, so New Britain. Naturally, when I went to put it in a box of hex-drive sockets, I already have one. Same with the 5mm Bondhus hex driver.

I forgot to show my finds from last week, so before I get to this week...
Week ago Fridays finds, paid $21 I think mostly for the SnapOn refer rat ($12)

Then I hit a Sat half price sale and spent $22

Which included all the following:

SnapOn, Blue Point and Craftsman Chisels;

Hacksaw blades, more punches, Jorgensen clamp, scrapers and a reel light;

Central depth micrometer (that was the expenive part at $11), Hazet diagonals, more punches and clamps, OTC seal tools, Plomb Ranger T, no name square head and a Blue Point inspection mirror.
On to this week! (I don't know what is up with the photos...)

And this week, I hit a couple estate sales on Friday, finding the following for about $8:

Craftsman vise grips, Proto Pro woodie, unmarked bevel gauge, Irwin and Stanley stubies, a Jorgensen C clamp, an English made level and a driver for switch bezels. The SnapOn GM70M came from a yard sale on Sat morning. It had a weird plastic sleave ont he grip, but I recognized the head. It was in with a tool box that had been sorted out as metric for $35 (they had another for SAE) but there wasn't enough good stuff in there for the price (mostly Craftsman EE) so I pulled it out an asked how much for just this? $2. Sold!
Also found this right aroung the corner from me at a TOO. They were asking $100, but all I had on me was $87. Sold.

'74 Raleigh Super Course MKII. All original except the saddle and the bar tape, with the original Brooks saddle in a box next to it. Needs new tire and tubes but ready to ride!

I'm looking for a cheap or free bike like that Raleigh for a booze cruiser. That thing looks nice!

Cheap or free being key since it would be locked up outside a lot of breweries and if it gets nicked, well, I wouldn't be out much except a walk.

You DO know that riding a bicycle while "over the limit" can still get you a DUI? (heard one guy got it got riding a horse intoxicated!)

Lately I've been buying just stuff I think I'll need. So my style of buying has been picky.
I rarely "need" (from a utility perspective) anything I buy at a flea market, but I'm a very selective picker. Having a niche (WWII) helps with that, but lately I've been branching out a little if it's something special or catches my eye.

Another quickie (trip to flea) w the wife netted these items...
What are the blades in that contour gage made of?

True! I'll probably relax on my requirements for if I buy it, but until my garage is better organized I'll just stay picky!

But today I couldn't pass up this wood vise, a Columbian 6cD wood vise no cracks just missing a handle. I asked what he wanted for it and he said $2. Needless to say I didn't haggle with him on it.

Some type of plastic. They're not labeled, but they have the sheen and flex of HDPE. I have one with steel pins, which tend to stick if allowed to corrode.
BTW, I saw a military field desk like the one you had posted, marked $75. This one looked like it had been very recently repainted (still OD).

I also have a steel contour gage from the 40's. It was in a leather pocket folder. I could tell the owner treated it like a precision machinists' tool. (That's a steal on a field desk!)

I'm not going to the bar and getting tuned up. I'm going riding around to various breweries/microbrews.

However, some of them are fairly close together...

I picked up this Craftsman drill press vise (2-7/16” jaws), 1944 (“E”) 9/16” Snap-On swivel socket, and a 1942 Snap-On LA-12 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch drive adaptor.

Looks like a 1940’s era Palmgren. Can someone back me up or correct me on that? I’m going to post it on the vises thread, although I don’t see too many vises other than machinists’ bench vises there.

CM made those DP vises thru the 70's, same style. What logo or engraving is on it?

Lugz, we go through periods where DP vises surface, jsut as we get "runs" on things here, wher everyone seems to find one.

I have no clue how to find an era for Palmgren however.

Today's antique store find. Almost brought home a little kennedy box but for some reason I talked myself out of it.

And the end. The SO box is a 69. 100 dollars doesn't get you much any more.

My $25 find. Has some rust but works good. Just in time to stop me from going to HF for a cheap one.

the magic number today was $1 - these items were all $1 each
late 20s Allyne Zerke grease/oil gun
an indestro 1/4 set - box is in rough shape - not sure what pieces belong here
a Stanley brace - I don't usually buy this new but for a buck it was in near perfect condition
a dimondite glassworks kit for machine application - missing the clay bar
a couple of ruxco oven test thermometers - apparently this guy worked for the gas company and they used them.
and the piece that I hope to sell for a few bucks - a 1957 Belair steering wheel - it's got a few cracks and some wear but I am hoping someone can help me with value. I am guessing 57 from browsing pictures - the logo says Belair - if I can't get more than $100 I will hang it on the wall.

This weekends finds - first is a weird little double ended adj. wrench, about 4" long, never saw one like that before. got that and the metal tap drill chart sign at a small swap meet that was at a car show I went to today, $25. for both.

Yesterday I hit a couple yard sales, got the 8" caster set, full boxes of hardware, most are stainless, and then the assorted grinding wheels, filter and chemicals, total outlay $28.75.
