As is, Dave. Besides the tailstock, it's missing a few other pieces, too, including some gears. Those are typically replaced anyway, though. But it was cheaper than cheap - basically a throw in.

There is a complete (with 3-jaw chuck, tailstock, threading dial, and some change gears) one for sale on the local Craigslist for $700.00. It has a Dunlap sticker on it.

From what I've read, they were apparently badged Craftsman for a couple years (40-42, or thereabouts), then DUNLAP for the rest of the run through the early 50s. This one was missing it's decal, unfortunately.

Dkroth- nice looking hammers. I found a long ball peen with that handle, that somebody left behind when they moved. The head was so rusted I couldn't tell the mfr.. Think I sold it at the flea market long ago. Is there a name for that style handle? I see in on odd mallets and such too.



I took a trip to the flea and rounded up a bunch of stuff. There was no shortage of ratchets this trip, which means trouble for me. Pics tomorrow hopefully.

Like usual I am weeks behind in updates. I will start with Fridays finds.

I hit a couple of small sales before the estate sale I really wanted to go to opened up at 8 AM. Pictures shoed 1960's - 1970's Chrysler cars and lots of RC model airplanes along with various other interesting stuff. And it turned out to be a vintage Craftsman honeyhole, my favorite stuff! Spent 2 hours digging stuff out. So much stuff that most items were not priced and prices were very reasonable. I spent exactly $100.

First off, the Craftsman, Sears and Dunlap stuff.
Pic 1: Vintage Craftsman lawnmower and Crown logo fuel can. One of my favorite finds! The mower turns over with the cord and I think it will run.

Pic 2: Craftsman handsaw, splitting maul, single bit axe, fiberglass handle hammer from the 70's - 80's, 36" bow saw never used blade with Crown label cover. The Craftsman level on the bottom cam from the first sale of the day.

Pic 3: The mint Craftsman Crown logo propane torch kit made me salivate. Even had the cardboard sleeve! I like al old Sears label stuff so the inner tube, curtain brackets and staples were a cool find. The handsaw and adjustable wrench are Dunlap as is one of the red tap measures, the other red tape measure is just labeled Sears. The keychain screwdrivers are both mint Crown logo and an item I have been looking for! The ratchet screwdriver is a Fulton.

Pic 4: One of the things I liked best about this sale was the excellent condition of the tools AND all the original boxes and packaging. In this picture is a Dunlap spoke shave with box,, pipe jaws for a Dunlap vise with box, Craftsman chalk line with Crown log box, Craftsman coping saw blades in the original packaging, Craftsman Crown logo stapler in the box and with instructions, Craftsman masonry drill bits in the Crown logo pouches and Dunlap wood bits for a hand brace in the original pouch. Plus I love the original Sears disc cement and pitch remover.

Pic 5: A Cities Service oil can and 3 Citgo cans, all 5 gallon. These will be sold.

Pic 6, 7: A Solo cup dispenser and a carton of refills made by Dixie. Notice the "safety" messages on the cups! Plumb hatchet, Texaco can, Proto brass with aluminum handle hammer, 2 Pexto pliers, Lufkin folding ruler, several tape measures for my collection, various padlocks to get Jeff Moss salivating, a Starrett drill gauge and 3 adjustable wrenches, a Diamond Horseshoe Co on top, a Lamson in the middle with a wood handle and a Vlcheck on the bottom with an unusual sheetmetal sliding jaw.

Thanks 3baygarage. I have about 3 more posts to make of my finds but a guy I know stopped by to tell me about a house being torn down and I could go pick through it before hand. Spent 3 hours going through the junk, found a few things. Make that four more posts to make!

Looks like that Proto 1431 brass and aluminum hammer may be the best deal I got, I only paid $1 for it. I put it in my basket without looking at it much, looking at it later I found the Indianapolis 500 markings on the other side. This was used on the knockoff hubs on the wheels on Indy 500 cars to loosen and tighten them.

I must be slipping.

Driving home from the flea market yesterday and thought to myself, "Did I even check the drive size of the Blackhawk ratchet I was excited over? Nope." Just assumed it was 1/2".

Looked at it today and sure enough it's 7/16 drive!

Then I went to compare it to the Blackhawk ratchet I posted on 10/17 that I thought was 1/2" drive. Guess what, that one is 7/16 drive too! And I didn't even notice.

What are the chances of finding two the same model 7/16 Bhawk ratchets,different model year maybe, at the same flea market, from two different vendors, just a few weeks apart?

I haven't heard of a Indy 500 marked ratchet before. Besides the hammer I have seen a picture of a Proto Dzus fastener tool that that says Indianapolis 500 on it. The later version of my hammer has a fiberglass handle, not as cool as the aluminum handle.

There may be a Indianapolis 500 marked keychain screwdriver

I don't know all the years they did it but in 1968 and 1969 they had a contest for professional mechanics to estimate the average speed of the winner. They had 500 prizes, the 11th thru 500 winners got a tape measure that says "Winner Proto Indy 500 1968" or 1969.

Some tool boxes have a Proto "Official Tools of Indy 500" logo on them

I know they have "500" marked wrenches but I don't know if any say Indianapolis on them.

Herbrand also made a brass head, aluminum handle Indianapolis 500 marked hammer.

The ratchet I remember seeing was up on Ebay a few years ago. It was stamped down the beam. May have been 3/8 drive IIRC. I can't recall if there was a date associated with it.

Fridays find's part II.

The first sale I went to got picked by the neighbors the night before and didn't have much left. I picked up a Craftsman level that was previously pictured, Coleman parts lantern,, stove and camp fuel that wee previously pictured, not pictured are new shoes in my size, fishing poles, ice cream maker and a decent "picker" grab hand for getting things from high places. Spent $10.

Second didn't have much but I found a like new Craftsman C3 cordless weed eater with the big Lithium battery. Spent $25.

3rd stop was the big Craftsman haul I already posted.

4th stop was another estate sale, so big outside stuff was this weekend and inside stuff will be in December. Some cool but expensive stuff including large 1940's Coca Cola signs. I was late so I am sure some cheaper goodies were gone already. Found a few good things, spent $40 even.

Pic 1: More Craftsman! Except for the Dunlap hatchet it's all Craftsman, 1/4" ratchet, 4" adjustable, 2 keyhole saws, combo wrenches including the elusive 18 mm, red handle screwdrivers, scratch awl, scraper blade, several Torx drivers, a leather belt tool holder and a tubing flaring kit.

Pic 2: Canada dry wood crate, GM vintage chrome polish tin, Blackhawk ratchet wrench, Duro Chrome flex handle, socket and ignition pliers, a couple of Mac wrenches, Proto wrench and a little tape measure for my collection . The ruler at the bottom was a quarter at another sale, its from the local newspaper.

I thought I had put up last weeks finds, but going back, I can't seem to find them. Oh well, second times a charm they say...
It's definitely getting past the season here, so finds are thinner and pricier. That said, some good stuff has come my way via indoor swaps, estate sales and a few TOO's.

This week was a family run estate sale, had a few tools in the pics but lots of card file cabinets! Also what looked like dozens of vintage Erector sets. When I get there, all the card files are marked NFS and they wanted ebay prices for the Erector sets. There were tarps covering all sorts of stuff and it looked like friends and family got to go through everything the night before. I managed to pick up a couple things though, cast iron Scotch tap dispenser, brass TP thing (matches the one in the other bathroom), scope lens covers in the original box. Next went to a farm sale way out the next county, picking up Starrett outside calipers new in the box and a steady rest for my 6" belt sander project.

Also got a killer deal on a 3/4hp motor at the restore, not realizing it was three phase...

Well. I got a little lucky this weekend and stumbled across an estate sale on Sunday morning. Picked up both a Plvmb and Blue Point pullers, a couple of S-K pliers (straight slip joint and hose clamp types), Utica slim nose slip joint, Vacuum Grip, Fleet, Challenger pliers, two sets of aluminum-body C-clamps (USA), two military-style web belts and a small pry bar.. All for $5. Saw a KRA59K in the corner and asked if it was for sale - it was. So for another $150, that went home with me. Took me most of the day cleaning off the old stickers and cleaning it up, but it sure looks good on my 26" stack. Sorry for the crappy tool photo, must have jiggled the camera a bit.

Saturday I went back to the Chrysler/model airplane estate sale for 1/2 price cleanout. Picked up a few more goodies, spent $40 even.

Pic 1: Not much Sears / Craftsman stuff left but picked up the Craftsman Crown logo power wood boring bits, 3 cans of Sears Boat bearing grease and Sears spikes and ferules for gutters.

Pic 2: The Sears wagon was rough but for $5 it was cheap enough and handy for hauling my loot to the truck. The Sears lawn spreader works fine and will be a user.

Pic 3: Other goodies include a Boy Scout mess kit, various oils and greases including 3 Cities Service cans, a stripper brush for a drill, hand wire brushes, Petersen vise grips, Williams adjustable wrench, headboard light and more candy from the fridge.

Pic 4: Some larger items include a like new air tank in the original box and an old military wood ammo crate.

That crate is in incredible condition. Based on the "illuminating projectiles" and the "1315 935" I see on the lid, it was used for 81mm mortar rounds. White phosphorous!

Scraped and wire brushed the drill gage the best I could.....came out o.k. - at least you can still read all the sizes.....



The drill gage compared to a stainless steel gage I already had.....General Tool #14 Tempered Steel vs the #24 Stainless Steel version.....

Been waiting for this sale for weeks... Got there half an hour before opening and there were probably at least 8 other people there waiting, and more showed up after I did (but before opening)... Not many sales going on this weekend and this one had a LOT of woodworking tools.

Main thing I was wanting was the floor standing drill press, and an angle grinder, and possibly the surface planer if the price was good enough.

So garage door opens, first thing I do walking down an isle was I scooped up EVERY ratchet on the table and shoved them in my jacket pocket, LOL... I knew they were SKs, Craftsman USA, and wasn't sure of the 3rd set but figured I would look after I grabbed other things I wanted.

The ratchets I didn't keep were a set of 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" Crescent brand ratchets that I let my neighbor have since he needed some decent ones.

I don't know if things just sold crazy quick, or were sold early because there was a CMan toolbox I wanted that was sold, along with some other power tools. Oh well, always another sale.

Found a little SK box with swivel sockets that I saw in pictures. Was only $6 but the swivel sockets were all mixed brands and used to hell, the SK box wasn't in great shape either so I passed. Was finding other little things here and there and shoving them in my pockets and trying to hold in my hands without dropping everywhere. The estate sale guy found me a box so I could empty everything out and keep going... hehe...

What I thought was an angle grinder was actually a buffer/sander with a totally different arbor / attachment style so I passed on it. The DeWalt surface planer was $549 new at lowes, and they had $300 on it... I passed on it too as it wasn't something I really need at the moment, it takes up a lot of space too, and I'm hoping to find one for about $200 or less.

After going over everything a few times I finally checked out and loaded up my truck. I talked to the estate sale company owner about the drill press, new they are $300, they had $200 on it, and he offered it to me for $150, so I grabbed it! It looks brand spanking new, porter cable, goes from like 300 RPM to 3100RPM, has some sort of lasers too. Also came with a Woodpeckers drill press table (I just looked that up and it costs $100+, so I feel good on that deal.

One of the other items I really wanted (and got) was an SK Wayne Roto-Ratchet, for $3.

I really need a good corded angle grinder, my cordless is fine for small things but it goes through the battery quick. I know if I buy one new then sure enough at the next sale there will be a nice one (or two) there cheap... lol. For now I just borrow my neighbor's when I really need to use one, he has like 3 or 4 so it's no huge deal.

Oh yeah, stopped at Whataburger on the way back home, got a sausage & egg jalapeno cheddar biscuit for a late breakfast.... Mmmmm....

Picked at a sale last nite, lincoln sae 400 amp motor driven welder to work a cat gen-set i have. It dates to 1989, is 230-460 volt 3 phase plus has the optional lincoln off/on switch. Its not known if it welds, but cheap enough @ 75bucks.

Picked at a sale list nite, in work-clothes a underlined craftsman 5186 in original prewar blue. I believe the script highlighted in silver is original to the piece too. Nice sharp cornered slide shows slightest abuse.

Picked at a sale last nite. Its a WW-II bomb hoist used by the navy to load bombs to the underwing of the pby catalina seaplane. When needed its mounted on top of the wing and hand winched the bomb into its holding sling. A movie here showing its use @7:00 into the film. You have to watch fast to see the guys on top of the wing cranking up the bombs.
