Super Gigantic Garage Sale at the Great Allentown Fairgrounds today, $4 entry fee. Meh. Lots of stuff, but very light in tools.
Picked up a pair of (1960s?) patented Sta-Kon WT-161 splicing/crimping pliers made by the Thomas & Betts Co, Elizabeth, NJ.
Spotted a Climax carry tote and a Craftsman underline liquid fuel blow torch. Intrigued by the latter, but I don’t know how to assess value, functionality or repairability. Seemed to be a steel tank, though I didn’t have a magnet handy. I’d consider going back for it if I knew more.

I received these tools from a friend's Aunt. She was moving and they were in her shed. My friend didn't want them so I took them. It's too much to list but the sockets on the racks are Snap On's and one set of MAC sockets. The wrenches on the right are Snap On.

A guy I know stopped by Monday and said he was helping clean up a house being demolished and I could come pick stuff out.
Who made the speed brace with the fixed socket and the saucer knob? Is that a Williams? Also curious about the slide-adjustable wrench (the only thing not rusty! :)).

I received these tools from a friend's Aunt.
Good friend. And an even better aunt! :)

We hit 4 sales today. The last stop had this 6 drawer Tennsco Card file cabinet. We grabbed it and threw it in the van. It's in overall good shape and just needs a little cleanup.

The challenge is that the drawers appear to be non-removable. I have never seen drawer slides that do not have some way to release the runner from the track to remove the drawer.

Is anyone familiar with Tennsco's runners and how to remove the drawers?

I will send an email to the company and see what they say.

Cheers

Jim

Does the Danielson BET'R GRIP 4-inch, have the broached hole for a box end?
It does! 5/16" :)

Date code is an F-12-5 (Dec 1945), btw. So, technically, not wartime, but close enough for hand grenades.

See thumbnails, shown with the other one.

(The other one is a bit of a mystery. I'd say it reminds me of Utica, with that panel, but Utica made adjustable crescent type wrenches with a square gullet, like Danielson. This one has a hex gullet. I'd say it reminds me of Diamond, which marked their non-Diamalloy line of adjustables "TOOL-STEEL", but all their adjustables had reinforced hanging holes. This one doesn't. EDIT: I misremembered. The Diamond TOOL-STEEL line did not have a reinforced hanging hole. Maybe this other little ****** is a Diamond. But I've never seen a Diamond with a panel like that. )

Jim, Drawers like that usually lift out:

Full extension; then lift the front. The rear may take a bit of windage, but that's the usual deal...

I passed on a few things today that were too expensive IMO at our usual weekly stop.

However I did pick up this nice vintage set of four 2-3/4" sleigh bells on leather strap just in time for the holiday season.

I'm deciding if I should polish them up? They have a really nice patina on the metal bells which I like.

picked up a few strays.
the box is from a Frank Mossberg N0 9 stamped steel socket set and has 5 o4 the original socket and a couple other odd itemss. Marking on the box is BARELY visible.

Also a cool cast malleable iron 9/16 socket from an old Syracuse Champion set - pretty sure on that.

And an odd mystery socket - square half inch drive and it looks like it was made for a square nut - that matches the time period of the rest of the items. Masrked 3/4 maybe someone recognizes the logo?

(also picked up another display cabinet for $45 at a Habitat Restore near Baltimore - need a little attention as it is from the same time period as the sockets.)

I might could use some of these to complete a Mossberg contract set I have, duddly. If you don't mind parting with them. Let me know. I need the two smallest in the 14-piece set (EDIT: No. 11).

I saw a 1/3hp Craftsman block grinder on craigslist for $20 so I called the guy up and went to check it out. He was clearing his fathers shop out (Father moved into assisted living). I was late getting there and he was closing up when I arrived, but he still had a few things that hadn't been sold.

He had a Dewalt DW705 on a stand, the saw has a Freud Industrial blade LU98R012 on it that sells for $94 on Amazon. The new version of this saw is $350 at Home Depot. I got the saw and stand for $20.00...SCORE!

The block grinder is in decent shape, it's missing the tool rests and the eye shields, the light works. The right side guard is cracked. It was mounted on a homemade stand constructed out of Pipe and an old wheel. I picked it up for $20.

I also picked up this old heavy duty shop stool for $10. There is a property of USAF tag on the back with a 1962 date. It evidently came from Buckley Field in Colorado.

IMG_4486-L.jpg

The last thing I was able to snag before he closed the door was this shop made heavy duty roller stand for $10.

I'm pretty happy with $60 for all of it.

I must have just missed you. I saw that cabinet there yesterday when I stopped by today it was gone. There was a second one in tool room by door that i picked up. It’s a really nice cabinet.

There’s a tab at each corner. Simply pull drawer to full extension and tap on bottom and it will lift off.

If yours had any dividers it stoppers those can be removed to free up space inside.

On mine lock was disabled but I was able to reconnect it and I’ll make a key to match.

Thanks Matt -

I figured it out with help from Outlaw. We were there between Noon and 1PM today as I recall. There were 4 or 5 of these cabinets around the basement but the other ones I saw were marked NFS.

I did a quick cleanup of the cabinet and will "install" it in it's new home over the long Thanksgiving weekend when my son is back from college - it's his junk we need to move to put it in it's new home.

Mine came with a working lock and key - the lock and key are both marked F40. The key says "Hudson Lock Inc" - I don't know if this helps you X-ref the key to a blank. I can send pics if needed - PM me.

Cheers

I'm going to have to strip that green paint, which is not factory. The wedge looks original and the eye looks undisturbed so I don't think this was ever re-handled. I am hoping I will find a nice original grain handle underneath.
^ Revisiting this, which was in reference to the 32-oz Blue-Point ball-peen hammer I found on Friday.

Thumbnail 1 is the original pic.

Thumbnail 2 is the handle after stripping the paint and rubbing it down with some oil.

Thumbnail 3 is the eye showing what sure looks like an original S wedge to me.

Thanks for the link, stewed. I've see that site before. That guy is very authoritative and does a great job with that page. I mentioned when I first reported the Winchester monkey wrench upthread here, how weird it was to discover that there is a reproduction and a fake stamp market out there for Winchester tools. I am convinced this one is legit. It has the correct marking. There is no doubles strike or signs of erasing an OEM marking, such as COES or PEXTO etc, which were typically on the static jaw, anyway, where there is no marking. And the marking is marred from use.

Today was a decent day. Hit a few estate sales and the pickins seemed slim so I supplemented with a large Waterford crystal piece and pile of leather and paper post cards (all dated between 1904- 1945). The clamp is a Vulcan and the two mini vises aren't marked but I liked them. Crystal was still in the box. All told I spent $25 and had a blast!

I am definitely getting old and soft. Not even December, just 29* F, and I had to break out the gloves between tables this morning at the flea market! No matter how old I get, I'll never get used to handling tools with gloves on. :)

Early morning light this time of year really blanching out photos.

Both boxes are interesting. The one on top is a DUNLAP, but I'm not sure what it's for. (I'll post more pics after clean-up in toolboxes thread.) The one on the bottom is a Signal Corps radio case.

Left to right:

- Wilkens WILCO piston re-groover
- Bonney 2680 brake spring pliers (I've lost count on how many of these I have found - I move them along to WWII guys right quick)
- pre-1946 Bonney 1/2-inch drive extension
- couple 3/8-inch drive Craftsman (H) sockets and a Plomb WF-52
- another wartime Mack truck S-wrench, this one made by Williams (you may recall I found a Bonney a few weeks ago)
- unknown 4-inch adjustable crescent-type wrench
- J.P. Danielson BET'R GRIP 4-inch adjustable crescent-type wrench (smallest BET'R GRIP I've ever found - excited to see if I can find a date code)
- Moore Drop Forge 10" Ford script wrench (Model A, T, or something else...)
- no-name pressed steel cheap-o DOE wrench auto kit with wingnut
- Winchester stamped monkey wrench. (There is a reproduction and a fake stamp market out there for some Winchester tools, believe it or not, due to the novelty of them being made by/for the rifle maker, but I'm pretty sure this one is legit.)
- DUNLAP ignition pliers (post-war)
- Fairmount face spanner

EDIT: And for a little context to my flea market haunts, which I talk about enough, but show little of, see thumbnails. Pic 1 is a typical house closeout guy van. Pic 2 is a typical table dump. Out of 400+ tables at this spot, only about 30 or so were occupied this morning. That will drop to 12 or fewer through the winter.

Found a pair of 10" Winchester pliers at flea couple weeks ago. Cant find much info on them. Posted them here somewhere I think. Are they pretty rare to find ?

Yes and no. Not holy grail rare. Not drop forged common, either. I would characterize all Winchester tools as uncommon, and pliers perhaps a little more uncommon. The DOE wrenches are probably the Winchester tools that show up the most. You'd think there'd be more around, since they made them for 11 years (1920-1931), but that's really a blip in time relative to other tool mfgrs, and their volume was not as great, either.

If you don't know the story, the link that stewed provided above is a pretty good one, and Wiki has a very comprehensive page.

My even more abbreviated summary is that the rifle-that-won-the-west company basically got big eyes and a bigger head at the absolute worst time in history to expand (1,000's of products from kitchen utensils to sporting goods in 1,000s of retails stores and catalog sales - for a sense of scale and scope, the 1931 general catalog had 242 pages!), on the slogan "As good as the gun!" just before the Great Depression. It actually ruined the company. They lost everything and went bust in 1931. The new owners kept the name, went back to focusing on guns, and went on to recover thanks in part to WWII (M1 carbine and Garand).

Anyway, there is a market for them with people fascinated with the novelty and the history. Original catalogs and pocket guides that Winchester published are available and collectors use them. Put it this way - the idea that someone would invest time and money in faking the danged things tells you that there is a collector's market.

EDIT: If anyone is ever in the San Jose, California area, you should visit the Winchester Mystery House. It sounds corny, and is corny, but well worth a quick stop. The gun magnate's widow, who was more than a little batty (consulting with mediums, etc) had it built with her fortune. Once in the middle of nowhere, it's now surrounded by strip malls, fast food restaurants, and car washes. It's massive. Construction went on perpetually and only stopped when she died. Supposedly haunted, they're still finding secret rooms. Anyway, it also has one of the finest single collections of Winchester rifles I have ever seen.

Went to the Albany flea market this weekend, four buildings filled with car parts and accessories. Not to bad, but people were saying it was down from last year. (they always say that...)

Anyway, here are my pickings:

Cornwell '64 catalog with price list and Lufkin catalog #7 with price list - $10 each

KRA222 with SK socket set inside for $10 and I thought it was just going to be the box for the Cleveland Twist drills but...

All the bits that are there are Cleveland also. Paid $30 but you just don't see things like this anymore. I probably could have dug deeper and found more gems, but my back was acting up and I am trying not to buy too much before I move.
