Imagine the damage that thing could do to a vintage chrome bumper! :scared:

I have one or two old U-Haul clamp-ons. Those were rubber padded where they hit the chrome, but some bumpers were just too thin for it for sure, especially if pulling too much weight.

When I was in HS, the neighbors across the street were moving to Oregon or Washington, and used a clamp on tow bar setup to tow their station wagon behind the U-Haul truck. They didn't get 5 feet and the bumper ripped completely off that old station wagon! Their oldest son was drafted to drive the station wagon after that!

Outlaw: great story and i bet those UHaul bumpers would still work if you get an old enough car with a REAL BUMPER and not a plastic one.

ALL: my parents drove from SEATTLE in 1967 in their brand new ford station wagon with the UHaul bumper on it pulling a travel trailer to a lake on the other side of the state maybe a 5 hour drive one way. i can't recall, but my sisters might have even begged to ride in the trailer and might have wore my dad down to say ok sure after we got over the mountains.

cheers

Now, how to re-purpose the thing!

Lets see: You could clamp it onto an overhead I beam and:
  • hang deer with it
  • attach hoist for getting stuff to a loft or attic

Anyone else?

Speaking of re-purposing: Should we consider a related thread for doing that with the "finds"? or just post here as we sometimes have in the past? :dunno:

Outlaw: since this thread almost dies every year maybe that's a good idea to keep a running WHAT CAN I DO TO STILL USE THIS COOL OLD TOOL OR PART THREAD.

maybe one of the younger guys can start it and host it and he can get to know a lot of the members like you and I and others have that host a few threads?

have you used one of you Uhaul hitches in the past or lately? i'd think they would come in handy in a pinch especially for us that sometimes go to sales not knowing that a cool trailer can be bought cheap if you can tow it home. on the check list heading out to the bigger sales add DID I LOAD THE HITCH to the TO DO LIST?

cheers

ALL: speaking of re purposing have any of you made a vise or grinder or workbench base out of these old barber chairs with hydraulics? i own 2 and they work ok, but one leaks a bit and i'm thinking of adding a plate and a big vise cause the height is about right. i picked them up last year and not sure i posted them here so here's a couple pics. i'm thinking of flipping the handle too so i'd have full 360 degree access for maybe my Reed 4c

The last time I used a clamp-on hitch it wasn't one of the U-hauls but a pair of clamps that were originally from a Helite single wheel (think giant caster) trailer that used two small 1" balls, to attach, so it could go up and down in relation to the towing vehicle, but still keep level.

I used those two clamps with the balls removed, then bolted an aluminum channel to it, and my Honda Trail 90 rode in the track (clamped on) and was strapped/braced so it would not fall over. It rode well back there for taking the Trail 90 up into the mountains.

Mount a vintage bumper to the wall, attach the bumper hitch, and wire the whole thing as a lamp w/shade off the hitch.

I prefer the latter, but just one man's opinion. There is a re-purposing thread on GJ, btw. It's just not very active. 11 pages since 2013 with huge dormant periods. It's on the Fab board. Link here. I have been subscribed for awhile but never seem to work up the enthusiasm for posting.

Actually it's up to 42 pages, and seems reasonably active, at least recently. 3 pages since late October.

It should be an interesting read, but for GS finds I think I'l do as you suggest and keep them here with the crowd that is already interested in the finds.

Outlaw: that had to be a great look with that trailer set up with your bike on it, but if it worked WELL DONE!!

yep i think some of the older threads lost steam either because their was nobody HOSTING IT and I bet if Outlaw or another member with enthusiasm and love for the RE PURPOSE a new thread would do well then all this cool ideas and stuff like JAKE just mentioned would be somewhere for our kids and grand kids to check out as these old tools become even more rare or obsolete.

JAKE: i can see it and I'd love to see you put that idea up on in your shop. it has the cool look and it's not even made yet.

ALL: we can still put our ideas and thoughts here and then re post over on a thread that has just the RE PURPOSE?

it's scary what the kids are inventing now cause i saw a new car without a steering wheel that was actually built. if they can put a virus in our laptops how'd you like to have one in your car and run you off a cliff or into a wall. OMG

that said i still own cars with a real KEY. our great grand kids will someday find one and say WHAT'S THIS. :dunno:

...

That's the best solution, IMO - share/discuss here and then re-post the results in the already available repurposing-focused thread. Several previous finds have been re-posted, or posted in more detail, in topic-specific threads after originally being shared in this thread. :)

I can't help you with a ratchet or a breaker bar, but I have a few extra 1-inch drive sliding tees laying around! WWII vintage. J.H. Williams made. Just sayin'! :)

Very nice! I'll PM you about some trade offers next weekend. Cheers!

Pawn shop find today:

JH Williams 3/4” Drive “Superratchet” - has a smooth action, just needs a little lube. And that’s not rust on the head, it’s just some gunk that comes with a little scrubbing. (Will post it again when it’s cleaned up)

Craftsman USA 5/8x11/16 tappet wrench (I collect these. Why? Because reasons.)

And a nice little Ridgid 6” pipe wrench. From looking at the jaws I would say it was hardly used, if ever. Just needs a little cleaning up.

All for $20 OTD!

ALL: i was invited back to my the home where I did a shed cleanout to pick up the FREE WHEELBARROW. well it was heavier than normal and didn't think much of it cause the grandson helped me load it. when i got home i found out why. i'm not a welder so I haven't made steel arms for any of my trashed old wheelbarrows (YET) and this one has steel arms, wood handles and it's a CRAFTSMAN.

i had a spare wheelbarrow tire sitting ready to use on another wheelbarrow so swapped tires (yes i had to sawsall off old bolts). then since i had my Delta 7.5 grinder with a wire brush cup wheel on it i use it to get some of the cement, crud and rust off. rubbed on some BLO with a rag (probably should have busted out a paint brush) and now i have a WHEELBARROW that I LIKE A LOT that might outlast me.

BTW I was thinking of just shooting some rustoleum paint on it and happy i didn't cause look who made this BEAST.

cheers

Can you get some more photos, closer in and from different angles, of all the writing around the bottom of the pump? I can see the big "Preservall" clearly, but the rest is very unclear.

hi hexen, sorry, i tried to get a clearer pic of the lettering. they're kind of worn away. the top line is 2 initials and "whitefield inc. while looking at it again i was able to make out "hartford, ct. i'm going to try again (google) and see what this is. it is leaking some stinky oil out.

From an antique show this weekend: Comet Metal Products ship recognition models. Located in the Richmond Hill area of Queens, Comet was contracted to make recognition models for the Navy throughout WWII. They continued to make them after the war, which is what I think the below are (the mil-issue models would be mounted to a wooden base that could be slid into a wooden carrying case).

The two lighter-colored ones at an angle to the right are by another manufacturer I have yet to identify. They seem to be at a different scale.

Yeah, that's better. :) I think the initials before Whitefield might be P. C., but regardless of the initials, I'm still not turning up anything pertinent on Google. I agree that the city is Hartford, CT.

The search results for "Preservall" are unfortunately dominated by a modern gun storage bag company... they say their product "Provides humidity and temperature independent, volatile and oil free ESD protection combined with long-term corrosion protection and mold / mildew protection"... so definitely not related to a pump full of oil. ;)

With so much information online today, it's always surprising to find something that seems to have been completely 'vanished into the mists'.

i agree. i'm new at computers (3yrs), it's uncommon to NOT be able to find something if you ask the right question. i ran a bunch of letter combo's and whitefield and got nothing was hoping something would show after i made out the city. maybe somebody recognizes it?

I have a lot of searching experience and didn't find anything useful on this one either, you did fine. ;) It does happen, especially if the company didn't bother to register any patents/trademarks/copyrights, and ceased to exist more than a few decades ago.

I've been trying to reply with the spelled-out markings seen on unusual/mysterious finds so someone else who has one of the whatevers might eventually be able to find our discussions once Google adds it to their search index.

I'll state the obvious and point out that Preservall would indicate the pump is intended to transfer preservative oil. The question is how it works (is the hose the suction or discharge side, and where is the other port), and just what did the oil preserve?

My gut feeling is that it was made for the military, probably during WWII.

A.C. Whitefield was chartered in New Windsor, CT, in 1923, to make a device to "preserve" fruit and vegetables. Ran 'salesmen wanted' ads looking for agents to sell the device in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina papers in 1924. It's not called the PRESERVALL, there is no description or photo, and I'm not saying it's the device. Seems like a strong possibility though.
