   Man you ****!

I'm guilty of the same thing though. Anything that doesn't have a price on it I guess most people shy away from thinking it must be too pricey, but of course I'll be the one to ask, and 7 times out of 10 it will be some ridiculously low price you just can't pass up!

After paying up for my treasures, I should have left. But, being friendly and conversational, I asked the sale guy if the big shop equipment had sold.

Sale Guy: "No, not yet."
Me: "I probably shouldn't ask, but...how much are you asking for the Delta 1.5hp Wood Shaper?"
Sale Guy: "This sold new for $900, and this guy paid $600 for it. You can have it for $75. I don't want to have to move it."
Me: "Well, okay, I'll take it."

I pull out my wallet again and paid up.
------------
Me: "That Delta 1.5hp Model 10 table saw is really nice too, but I already have a table saw."
Sale Guy: "Yeah, that's the problem: everyone already has one. You can have it for $30."
Me: "Well, okay, I'll take it."

I pulled out my wallet again.

Wow. I think I just decided to find the nearest Habitat ReStore and put it on my Friday route. I've been aware of some of you guys stopping at them, but I didn't think they'd be a source for tools like that vintage RAY ratchet duddly just picked up.

So I get up Saturday morning and head to an estate sale that's about 5 minutes away I was already late getting there so several people have already gone through the garage. so I get into the garage and I start looking at tools on the shelf and they wore $2 each so I found a Craftsman ratchet and I also found this new in the box chromatic retractable trouble light. so I was thinking that it was on the shelf so it must be for $2 , i took it and I go through the rest of the house and found some Christmas lights brand new in the box And some Crayons. I go to the table to pay and as I get to lady she starts adding up what I had and when she saw the trouble light she said "oh I didn't price that so I need to look it up and see what what it cost on eBay." she really did, pulled the computer out and looked the price up while I'm standing there with a long line of people behind me! I was in disbelief so I just played it on knowing full well I wouldn't want to buy it and even argue with the price, she wanted $30 for it which is what it was selling for high price on eBay. so I just played along and I kept the line waiting. I'm waiting and then the guy behind me he was laughing because he realized what I was doing and then I said to the lady, "you know what I'm not going to buy it" and then she literally took a marker and wrote right on the box $30.:eyecrazy: I gave $10 for the stuff in the pictures and I also got a food processor for the mother in law since she been wanting one due to her old one burnt up, got it for $6.

Shaking my head. I think of Craigslist and eBay as 50 cents to the dollar, yard sales as 25 cents to the dollar, and estate sales as 10 cents to the dollar. There are exceptions to the prices on rare or collectible items, but I walk away from anything dramatically different than that.

SWMBO and I bought the same saw, also together, also at a garage sale, better than 20 years ago and were thrilled to get it for $150!!

Yeah, that's ridiculous. You want high-end eBay prices, then you pull the items before starting the local sale, post them on eBay, and be prepared to store them for months or years until they sell at that price you found one eventually managing to sell for (or worse, that one only was listed for if they weren't smart enough to only check sold listings).

Hemi: the workbench was a thick, heavy duty one for sure, but I don't have a place for it in either of my garages. This sale was in Westford, Mass.

I was on the way back from my weekly visit to my mom, when I saw signs for an estate sale. It looked to be on my route, so I spotted it and stopped in just as they opened. It was an estate of a couple who were pretty well off, he was some sort of yachtsman and she was a collector of fine china, so the place was stuffed with high-priced nautical items and acres of china, crystal, pottery, etc. All stuff that I had no interest in - and this was day #3 of a 3-day sale. The way out was through the garage which was littered with all kinds of stuff that they apparently didn't want "stinking up the main show" in the house. I pawed through some kitchen items and whatnot before stumbling on two 3/8" drive 12-point Snap-On sockets F9M (1957), F14M (1956) and a MAC 7/16" combination wrench marked C 4 that appears to be unplated. Anyone venture a guess as to the age of the MAC?

Spot on! I was at antique mall over the weekend, where a vendor had some over-priced stuff, and informed me that he prices it where he wants, and when somebody wants it worse than him, they can have it. I left him with everything he started with. Other vendors there seemed to have the same approach.

Skunked on my usual haunts this weekend - estate sale was conspicuously absent of tools, and I didn't make it to the flea.

I've had some time to go through the haul from Friday. I cleaned most of the read paint off of the Plomb sockets and went through the Thorsen and PowrKraft tools.

A few purchases this week.

First is a 1/2 HP delta grinder. This one is on a walker turner pedestal. The tag says 220v but it’s wired for 110v. I plugged it in and it purrs and the lights and bulbs work too.

The water turner stand is a little damaged but it’s a very cool stand.
$62

Then I picked up this 6” Rock Island 577 today for $70.
Need to find a swivel base for it but it’s in very clean shape under all the black. And the rust is just slight surface rust. If anyone has a lead on a swivel let me know.

"oh I didn't price that so I need to look it up and see what what it cost on eBay."
Shaking my head...
Yeah, that's ridiculous.
I am usually very stoic at flea markets, long-inured to the 'it sells for umpteen dollars on eBay' eedjits. But lately, after experiencing a noticeable uptick in instances of it, I have been less than unflappable, responding, against my better judgement, with the obvious retort: "But this isn't eBay!"

Another reply to my offers that I am hearing more and more often from sellers at flea markets here is, "Thanks, but I'll take it to Allaire."

That's a local thing that requires some explanation. Allaire is a reference to a monthly (first Saturday) "antiques fair" that is held on the grounds of Allaire Village*, in Allaire State Park. The $85 peg leg vise a seller just turned down $50 from me for on Saturday is the last example of this phrase being used on me. Allaire is a step up from the flea, and it is known to attract the kinds of people who spend big bucks on antiques, but trust me when I say it's largely the same vendors and buyers, just bigger, and with a little more atmosphere. The interpretation is, "it will sell for this ridiculous price there if it doesn’t sell here." The funny thing is that 9 out of 10 times I will see the item back at my flea market in the following weeks. The old me would usually just walk past content in my own knowledge. Lately, I have taken to asking slyly, rhetorically, "I thought you said you were taking that to Allaire?" Then walking away with a little goat-gotten tou-f*%^ing-che in my step! Let's see if that blacksmith vise turns back up.

*Allaire Village was a colonial era village built around a very old peat bog furnace/forge. Interesting in its own right for producing all the pig iron parts for all the major NYC steamboat lines in the steamboat heyday. The original buildings - including a post office, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, carpenter’s shop, carriage house, manager’s house, foreman’s cottage and chapel - are still standing and have been restored. There are several estate sales around here that use Ebay as their price guide and asking price, not sold price either. Thorsen wrenches for $8 EACH. Wilton 4" bullet vises for $700.

Yeah I've seen quite a few estate sale companies around here too price things basically at the top price they can find on eBay... Doesn't matter if the ebay item is a NOS complete set and hasn't sold in a year of sitting on ebay and their item is beat to hell, incomplete, and doesn't work...

...or the fact that there is no shipping & handling involved, no sales ads to monitor, no transaction to manage, etc, other than holding your open hand out and taking my cash on the freaking spot!

Nothing for me this weekend, but my neighbor, who recently lost his wife, is thinking about having an estate sale, and invited me over to look through the garage before hand, so I'll make sure that happens this week. If nothing else, I'll help him price a few things.

Saw an estate sale ad this morning. Nothing special but picked this stuff up for $7. The square is 11-1/4" long and I thought it was unmarked but I can see the name Blos in cursive writing just before the hole in the blade. Wonder if anyone has ever heard of them? Nice old original conditioni tack hammer and a Proto Professional 8" adj wrench. His mom just passed away in her 90s and the tool tote was hers. She actually had the Proto wrench and the cheap Stanley plane and level in there with some other stuff. Must have been one heck of a lady. The little pocket driver is a Matco. A couple of new Nicholson files. Not bad for a day where I wasn't expecting to see anything in the estate sale ads.

Around here, there is the Rose Bowl flea market and the Pomona swap meet. My son and I joke when we see high prices that the amount is "Pomona Prices". Seems to me the flea and swap vendors got the deal we want and they throw a price on the wall to see if it sticks. Part of the fun is the hunt, there will be more elsewhere.

DMV (DC/MD?VA) area here. The unicorn experience is when you find an estate sale that doesn't consider the stuff in the garage to be worth anything! They will sell the stuff in the house at higher prices but when it comes to the garage or tools they say anything in the garage is free or $2 - I have had it happen a couple times and have cleaned up! A couple times I think these were self run sales and they were overly excited over all the "antique furniture". in the house.

I find it to be a very fun hobby and try not to let all the inconsistencies drive me crazy. I am headed to Japan for a week and my daughter has already said she will be taking me to:
1 - a couple of cool thrift shops
2 - one or more 'shrine sales' - essentially flea markets
3 - a four story 'Daiso' - Japanese Dollar store!! crazy snacks!

The real reason for going is to see the grandkids. and there will be lots of off-base time and things like bullet train rides, various shrines, Tokyo Disney.. but I am happy that she threw a couple of Duddly things in the itinerary as well!

Edit - Oh I will be there for peak cherry blossom time and she says they blow away what we have in DC - so that should be cool to see!

If you like candy, look for Japanese Kit-Kat bars. They come in all kinds of crazy flavors over there, I recently learned.

YES! we get regular shipment of all types of snacks - and the variety of KitKat bars is amazing! Because they are on a US base over there shipping back and forth is pretty reasonable vs traditional international rates.

If it helps, McMaster sells brass soft jaws that are very similar but not at yard sale prices.

We really only have two major estate sale companies around here. Both are pretty reasonable on hand tools. Power tools get priced too high, but they always seem to sell (so maybe not). Occasionally they have something cool that they do their research on (some vintage Proto tool display boards) that they do their research on and try to get top dollar, and usually disappear early on the 1/2 off day. They typically have somebody working the garage and somebody working the house. The guy that normally works the garage is a pretty cool guy and will cut you a deal. The lady in the house....well....just be prepared to pay whatever it is marked at and you won't have a problem.

Hey Jason, looks like 41595 +WF. It's the largest CM driver I've personally seen.

Boofer, What size is the blade on that one? I have a WF-41588 with a 3/8 wide blade. had it for decades... Shank is just under 12"

I have several others about as long, but smaller blades.

I picked up these two 6R Petersen Vise Grips and a Cornwell JR30 ratchet for a grand total of $4.

So being a Garage Journal member I decided to take apart the ratchet for a good cleaning. Unfortunately, during disassembly I broke the small snap ring that secures the selector switch.

I sent an e-mail to Cornwell not expecting much of a response. I told them that I was not the original purchaser. The next day I was contacted by a fellow who asked for pictures of the ratchet. Once he saw the photos he gave me an address to send it back for repair. I just received it back with a new rebuild kit installed. He estimated that the tool was made sometime in the 1950s!

I'd say that was pretty good customer service!
