Okay, so I passed again...figured I'd check with you folks one more time. It's at a non-advertised garage sale in my neighborhood, hidden from view, and the lady says she'll wait to hear from me tomorrow morning...so I have some time. My main issue with it is that the door will not close due to the cast iron on the inside of the door being cracked and separated. I don't know how exactly to fix that...maybe chip the concrete out, clamp it, then braze or weld it back together, and repour the concrete? Not that I'd want to go through all of that trouble, but whoever I resold it to would. Maybe I'm overthinking this. :dunno:

Yes. TKF Detroit, not St. Clair Shores.
Those were all marked with the full last name - T.K. Fisher. I'm not sure which came first, but I always assumed the sequence was T.K. Fisher, St. Clare Shores, then T.K.F., Detroit. Do you know?

Well I was hoping it was full of lost Confederate gold but it’s open so someone already got that.
Snerk.

And when you go back, pick up that 50s/60s chair!
 It's request hour here at WIOU Garage Sale Radio!

That seems like a major problem to me, but I don't know much about the market for old safes. They don't seem to be big sellers in my area, though I haven't seen any THAT old, there's often a safe still sitting around on the last day of estate sales when I go. Anyway, I'd think whoever wants to own a safe would want to be able to close the door (even if just for display, not keeping valuables in it, having a heavy door like that hanging open all the time seems like a shin injury waiting to happen ;) ) so the time/effort that would need to go into that repair (if it's even feasible) would reduce the value.

Scored this nice craftsman crowntop hand carry box and craftsman cordless set from the free pile today, surprisingly both batteries take charge and the tools work well. The circular saw even has a new blade!10f36cd203211e9241561fa792238fc3.jpg

Wow! What the heck kind of "free pile" gets working power tools put in it!? :eyecrazy:

There were two estates sales listed for today; one local, one semi local. The semi local had pics of good tools, Snap-on, Proto and MAC, but in the pics everything was individually priced, never a good sign. The other sale had a pics, but only one pic of the garage, nothing listed but I could see bins set up. So this morning I went to the local sale. And boy, am I glad I did. No complete sets, but lots of Proto, Williams, Craftsman USA. No cheap ****. The guy was obviously an engineer or chief of maintenance somewhere, as it was all industrial and in good shape.

Empty Williams socket box in a size I needed, Proto 4oz ball pien, Proto and Starrett punches, Plomb WF extension, P&C unversal, General jewlers screwdrivers, Mitutoyo and Brown & Sharp pocket rulers, MAC flathead, Proto 10 ton puller screw (in protective sheath), fine coarse and metric thread cleaners, Proto Starrett and Catapiller feeler gauges, Starrett micrometer wrench, 4" Proto adjustable and a nice circuit jumper. $15

Then, after going to the post office and getting my hair cut, I went out of town to the other sale. Lots of good tool truck tools, every single thing priced and labled. Little baggies that said "6 Snap-on sockets. 1/4 - $10", things like that. Not horribly priced, but more than I would pay for stuff I already have. I did pick up the following for $22.50

3 Starrett calipers and one General. A Herbrand that I already had (it was only .50) and a very old Plomb Tool Mfr Co.

Tomorrow is the Biggest Indoor Garage sale, or something like that. So, not looking too shabby.

That is a definite 'fixer upper'... Maybe offer her $25? Brazing it back together then re-pouring would seem the easiest route. Once you grind it smooth and re-paint it would be as good as new.

Question is, do you want another project?

I overslept today, that should have been a sign of my day to come... I actually woke up at 5:30, but just closed my eyes for a minute more, then woke up at 8am.. ugh..

After looking at the new sales that popped up, I decided to make a trip about 45min south of me to a couple estate sales. One was by a family I know that gives good prices, but the house didn't really look like it had anything appealing (and why I didn't go yesterday). Second sale I heard of the company but never been to their sales because they do further south, but I saw a little 3.5" Craftsman branded Reed vise in the pics... There was also a garage sale on the same street and another sale further south, and a Home Depot I haven't been to in a long time so I could search for penny deals...

Go to the estate sale with the CMan vise... garage is full of older gentlemen... nobody is even looking at it. I walk up and look at the tag... $150 (see pic)... :spit: pass... Could not find anything else in the house on my wishlist, so off I went to the garage sale. That was a bust too, just a bunch of clothes and knick-knacks...

Went to second estate sale, run by the people I know. Nothing there either, just found a little -vv- CMan 1/4" combo wrench, and a mahews cold chisel... .25 cents.... But I got to talk to them about upcoming sales and in a few weeks they have what sounds to be a real good one with a large woodworking shop.

What was supposed to be a 3-hour tour turned into a 7-hour boondoggle...

I do have a question for Outlawmws... I saw these Coleman glass globes at Walmart for $2.50, are they worth grabbing? Are they more or less universal if I find a lantern at a sale?

On my way home & passing thru an industrial area, I found this on-top of a forklift's forks, and outside the property fence, I assumed the stuff wasn't just being placed there while rearrangement was happening. It wasn't. So, it's free! isn't that "the best price?"

No rust-through, so never stored outdoors. The shelves were all lined with some-sort of heavy-duty multi-ply gasketing material, rubber reinforced with what appears to be cotton fiber. It even had the original lockset removed and stored separately. The back of the cabinet on these is open, but someone was planning to use this hard when new, and had already screwed a sheet of 1/4" plywood to it, which stiffens it up well. It was on wood runners, for the feet, so the metal wasn't in direct-contact with the concrete floor. The top appears to be the laminated plywood/particle-board that Sears originally-sold for this workbench.

So, a Sears Craftsman steel workbench, probably from the late 1970's, all drawers work, and the opposite side has two shelves and a metal pegboard door. Free!

I had a set of three very similar to these that I sold last year, I picked them up at a woodworker's estate sale, and re-sold them, so I know this will be an easy re-sale. They were not in as-good condition, and I sold them to the first person who saw them.

I have a Craftsman 12" 240 V radial arm saw that I bought new, 39 years-ago, it has this same color, style and material for the enclosed cabinet for it I bought at the same time, so I know the age of the unit.

Jason, that's a great price for a lantern globe, but as to what it fits, I could not say without looking closer than the pic allows. there were literally dozens of different globes for the many different lanterns.

The image sort of looks like it might be for one of the smaller backpackers lanterns.

One other thing to look for generally is where they were made. no one seems to want to use a MIC globe unless its intended as a sacrificial globe for using instead of a very valuable vintage globe. (the restorers are as fussy about the proper "emblem" on a period piece as car fanatics are...)

To resell on Eprey, you could not get hurt at those prices though...

...

I see that it lists a couple dozen model numbers on the box of what it fits.

Edit: I found the list of model numbers that globe fits on Coleman's website instead of trying to read all that tiny text in the photo, here it is:

"Coleman® propane lantern models: 5150, 5151(A/B/C), 5152(A/B/C/D), 5154(A/B), 515 (A/B), 5159, 5417, 5419, 5428, 5429; Coleman® Dual Fuel™ lantern models: 282, 285; and Coleman® Liquid Fuel lantern models: 286, 288, 321, 325, 335."

I didn't bother to look those all up, but with the first one (5150 propane)... only results Google was coming up with for it was parts and used sales, and the photos in this eBay listing show "Made in USA" on the box. Don't know how old it is, but surely at least 10 years, my guess from the look of the Kmart price tag on an accessory bag would be 30-ish.

And found the Duel Fuel 282 listed on http://tgmarsh.faculty.noctrl.edu/coleuslant8100.html as being from 1990, so 28 years.

I know nothing about these lanterns myself, so hopefully that wasn't completely unhelpful, lol.

Those benches are tough as nails! Good find. We have one at work that is completely FULL of pullers, air tools, hammers, and other heavy stuff and I must say, it's help up well.

I see that it lists a couple dozen model numbers on the box of what it fits. So yeah, I'd guess those models are all recent-production in China.

Actually the Coleman gas lanterns at least, (possibly most if not all the prop lanterns) are still made in the US or Canada. Globes have always been outsourced (originally to Pyrex) and in recent years they have been from Germany and many other countries, and sadly China...

Also a long list of models does not mean they were very different. the same globe and often the top vent might be fitted to many subtle model changes and cross from gas to propane, and different variants on a theme, for instance backpackers, to smaller propane, and many sub variants.

The venerable 200 and 220/228 models used basically the same globes (200 being the single mantle and 220/228 being the double mantle with different globes) and while the base unit used the same globe over many decades, The model numbers came and went with letter designations. Then there were kerosene variants, (more common north of the border)

Yeah, I already edited my post before you finished replying, as I looked into it a little more. :)

There's something amiss, RagTop. The Q.D. line was 1/2-inch drive. I can't see the full model number but if that 7/16" socket is D14 it's 1/2-inch drive 12-point. If it's O14, it's 1/2-inch drive 4-point. 14 would be 1/2-inch drive 6-point. Same for the one with the 5/8" service opening. D20, O20, or 20. All 1/2-inch drive. As far as I know, Blackhawk did not make 5/8-inch drive tools.

It was the other ones that wouldn't fit the 1/2 or 3/8 extensions but will fit my 7/16 Blackhawk breaker.

39984 Breaker
35124 socket
39978 universal
The other 2 were 1/2 drive.

7/16", how odd! Found an explanation here:
http://alloy-artifacts.org/blackhawk-innovation-p5.html#tools-716dr

" 7/16-Drive Tools and Sockets

Blackhawk's line of 7/16-drive tools was one of their more distinctive products, and no other company is known to have produced tools in this drive size. According to the Blackhawk sales literature, the enabling factor for these tools was the extra strength of the Hexite steel alloy developed by Blackhawk.

By the mid 1930s Blackhawk had developed an alloy steel named "Hexite", and claimed it to be 70% stronger than the typical chromium-vanadium alloys in use. As if to back up their claims, Blackhawk designed a new line of sockets and drive tools with 7/16-drive, and extended the claim that these were as strong as conventional 1/2-drive tools but only slighty larger than the corresponding 3/8-drive tools. With these tools (or so the marketing claim went), the mechanic could dispense with the trouble and expense of maintaining both 3/8- and 1/2-drive sets and go entirely 7/16-drive.

Blackhawk produced a full range of 7/16-drive sockets to go with the drive tools, including shallow, deep, and universal sockets. Since this line of tools was supposed to replace both 3/8- and 1/2-drive, the socket sizes ranged from 5/16 up to 1-1/4, in order to cover the normal size ranges of both the larger and smaller drive sizes. "

Being the only company to ever offer compatible sockets, I guess Blackhawk really got people "locked in" on 7/16" Lock On. :p

Sorry I've missed all the fun on this thread, but that doesn't mean I've been idle.

On Wednesday, Smokeshow69 sent me a text with a photo of a Craftsman 1/4" drive, BE socket set, complete with the rare flex shaft spinner, and asks me if I think it's worth $20. I respond with "WTF" and ask for a link. I immediately jumped on eBay and found nothing. Then I got on CL and couldn't find the ad he claimed to have seen, but I found an ad with another socket set for $20, AND, it has a Craftsman flex spinner! I texted the seller and set up a meeting the next day. In the mean time, Smokeshow tells me he was just playing a joke on me. Hahaha 😑

So I meet with the seller and learn that he's selling his dad's tools (who is 93 and just moved into assisted living). The guy was a tool nut, and kept everything immaculate.

So I come home with a car load of stuff and send tell Smokeshow about my find. Who has the last laugh, now, Smoke? 😄😛😎

These are a couple quick pix I took with my phone. Much more to come.

P & C 100 socket set, with s-k ratchet, Craftsman =V= sockets (6 & 12 pt), and flex shaft spinner. $20.

Atlas/Craftsman XY table and unidentified vise, $100 (it was with a Craftsman King Seeley DP that was spoken for, but I made an offer on the table anyways, which they accepted!)

Brian

Decent small haul for me this morning at the flea market.

From top to bottom:

- Wartime 16 oz. Long C Craftsman logo ball-pein hammer (made by Vlchek)
- AMPCO brass hammer with an "E & B MILL SUPPLY YARD" stamp on the handle
- Some weird special service wrenches, including one marked PC No. 23945 and another marked REGO (??), and a c. 1880's buggy wrench, marked "HARTFORD SPRING & AXLE CO"
- Another Braunsdorf-Mueller tubular angle socket wrench for my Braunsdorf-Mueller collection (not sure if it's a dupe yet)
- DOE's are a KRIEGER (Bonney made, 1943 date code), a wartime New Britain with some kind of phosphate finish (I hardly ever see these), and a prewar Armstrong M-1723.
- No clue on the 1/4-inch drive spinner with the green handle (S-K?)
- First S-K (looks to be Diamond Calk made) adjustable I have ever seen, and the other one is a 6" J.P. Danielson BET'R GRIP with a 1944 date code.

Good haul. I like the adjustables. I have a 12" S-K adjustable with that Diamond look. I'm pretty sure that spinner isn't S-K but I don't recognize it.

Almost completely dead day, and more story than pickings; two sales, and not a lot to get me out of the house, but I needed to get gas, so I stopped while I was out anyway.

The two Hot Wheels cost me a buck fifty, I was surprised to see that HW made a nitch car like an Oswego Super Modified! We competed against a few of these "back in the day", at open competition races.

At the second sale, The Aluminum electrolux Vac attach was in a milk crate full of other vacuum attachments that I didn't want, and the lady says:

"Oh its a dollar for the whole box!" I said I only wanted this piece, and she is like "It's still a dollar, we want this stuff gone!"

I'm thinking "Really? you think extortion tactics will get people to take your junk just because it the same price?" :wtf: So I poke around some more to see if there is anything else I want that a can roll in as the husband said "Make a pile we will give super deals!"

So I eventually saw the RCA Victor Red label record (this was their premium line for records..) and took it past the husband for a price. In a low voice he says "Just take it! No charge!"

So much for the wife's approach!

At least this upholstery attach won't need an adapter hose for use like the ones from a week or so ago, and oddly I was surprised to find the extension was also aluminum, not steel! Had I realized that I would have grabbed the other couple of metal extensions!

So slim pickings with bad yardsailing weather...

Too much to list and not much time. Here's my haul from an estate being sold off via CL. There's more in the way of shop supplies but I didn't have room on the table.

More pics Riley!

Holy Mother load of vises! Two machinists, and two DP vise's PLUS the X/Y table WITH the ever-elusive Vise jaws!

Not to mention everything else!

I see you stocked up on sandpaper! I found a good way to store large selections of sandpaper is in one of those plastic "file boxes". You can even use the Pendiflex file folder holders for unboxed sandpaper.

I'm about to add a second for my "overage" and include the steel wool as well.

Too much to list and not much time. Here's my haul from an estate being sold off via CL. There's more in the way of shop supplies but I didn't have room on the table.

Looks like I need to play more jokes from time to time so you can find more good stuff !

I've got some stuff I've been buying over the last couple months that I haven't had time to list/photograph yet, but here's one...

I got a Swanson Framing Wizard ruler (folding square) for $6 a couple weeks ago, retails for about $30 new. It was missing the Allen wrench for adjusting its setscrew, but I just so happened to have a loose one laying around that fit perfectly (not sure what size it was, the wrench is unmarked and I haven't bothered to measure it). And the washer and lock-nut on the pivot hinge were extremely rusty and flaking off bits of their plating every time I touched it (you'd think on a $30 aluminum ruler they could've gone with stainless steel hardware originally, but noooo), so while out at other sales today, I stopped at an Ace Hardware and was able to find a replacement lock-nut (not stainless, they were out in that size - M6) and washer (stainless) for $1 total. Got it reassembled and it's almost good as new now. :)

I don't have anywhere near enough sandpaper to need one of those for it, but that is a good idea to keep in mind in the future. :) I saw one of those plastic file boxes for $2 at a garage sale a few weeks ago, but didn't buy it because I didn't have a use/place for it.

I did buy the stuff that was inside it, that the seller had forgotten / not bothered to take out of it and price separately... a Westcott stainless steel 12" ruler with cork backing, and 4 packs full of Alvin isometric graph paper that retails for about $15-$17 a pack :)eyecrazy: didn't realize that till I looked it up when I got home)... for a total of $0.25! :bounce:

I like that idea, Outlaw. I have another small tote that is overflowing and am always digging to find the right grit.

There's some really cool items in that lot, but I have visitors this weekend.

Well I traded my Tilt Deck a month ago for a plow truck which I then sold to a buddy. I have been looking hard for another good deal on a non tilt deck that was heavy duty. Found this 2004 Hudson 4 Ton 18 Foot today on CL for $3000. I ended up getting it for $2500. It's in excellent condition and came with the long and short ramps. Can't wait to start using it with my new venture buying and selling Skid Steers! I think I will be the Waggoneer of the east soon:lol_hitti

So, I drove 45 miles to the Largest Indoor Garage Sale, which ended up being one 3/4 full room at the fairgrounds. But I did pick up a tool box full of stuff for a tenner, and then drove around to an estate sale where I bought the other box. So, here is what I pulled in.

The Craftsman box is the one from the indoor garage sale, and it is full

After throwing away a surprising small amount of ****, I was left with this

A P&C pipe wrench, small USA hacksaw, a glasses repair kit, jab saw, Barcalo wrenches, perfect handle driver, and other random things. Also, this lot was in there

An almost complete '30's Hinsdale set, with flex, both drive studs, two speeders, ratchet, ell handle, etc. Not bad for $10.

I will put the estate finds in another post.

After the indoor garage sale, I checked CL, finding an estate sales that listed hand tools but no pics. It was on the way home so, why not?
I found the second of the two boxes, and paid full price

Mostly complete, a couple sockets are newer Williams, extra DBE's and the flex is newer, but you rarely see it this complete when it is this old. $75 and I didn't even blink.
