RT, loving the HD Smith Perfect Handle butterfly split handle driver, and the Pexto Driver just 'cause I dig Pexto tools.

3 Bay The ratchets and especially the Plvmb are defiantly UUUGLYYY! I'l PM you an address for the home for UUGLYYY tools!

Seriously, My 5849 I just posted that got the rebuild kit was about as ugly, and cleaned up fine...
On the Armstrong, yeah makes you wonder how they managed to shear that off!

My 5849 that was rebuilt I got for $5 a few years back as the thing was locked up. I got it apart and my eyes about bugged out. They had managed to bust the gear and pawls! No sign of a cheater being used, but they must have...

Outlaw, that HD Smith driver was painted gray. I recognized what it was and the seller had no clue it was even wood handled. threw in the Pexto with the purchase of the HD!

feel free to send me pics and I will let you know if they are worth buying!

Will do! Thanks Jeff!

Things have been a bit busy around here recently. It's bulk pickup in the next town over so we do some "curbside shopping" on the weekends.

Last week a guy was emptying his garage of motorcycle parts and he had dragged a Harbor Freight Motorcycle and ATV lift to the curb. Into the van it went. He had lot's of other goodies that I left and they were gone quickly.

This morning we went to a nearby Townwide Sale and it was slim pickings for a while. Then I found a B&D Type-2 Workmate marked $5.00 and into the van it went. We had a nice talk with the widow of the original owner about him and his stuff.

In the afternoon we went out for more "curbside" shopping and it was a good day. I added another vintage wooden office chair to the herd (not pictured - we have picked somewhere around 7 or 8 of them from the curb over the years).

I then found a B&D Type-1 Workmate. The 2 ladies who were emptying the shed to the curb told me I missed some tools by a few minutes but I was happy with the WM. All they said they had to unload were some pots - no interest.

My son spotted a milk crate with 7 12" Jorgenson bar clamps and 5 c-clamps. 2-3" Ponys, 1-4" Armstrong and 2-4" Wiltons.

While making a last loop back for something we changed our mind on we hit a find. There was a set of wooden card catalog drawers sitting out. As we were throwing them in the van the owner mentioned he had more in the shed. They were apparently being used as low income housing for mice or other critters and need a GOOD CLEANING.

We also grabbed a Sears Snow Blower for its 3-1/2 HP Tecumseh engine as a spare engine for 2 Ariens snow blowers that use the same engine. The fuel tank was dry and it turns over - so I am hopeful.

Last we found a 12' x 18' wool rug that smells a little musty - so we are airing it out to see if we can get rid of the smell.

Pic#1 - the lift
Pic#2 - The B&D Type-2
Pic#3 - The B&D Type-1
Pic#4 - The clamps
Pics#5,6 - The Card Catalogs
Pic#7 - The rug

Cheers

Jim

Nice finds Jim! Not one but TWO aluminum frame WM's? and the card catalogs! I'm with Lugz on those!

Last year I picked up a Wool carpet that was THICK. Not like low pile like yours. I washed it in my drive way, (Woolite, Power washer set for wide spray (low power) and cold water) and a stiff push broom for scrubbing.

Cleaned up well BUT took forever to get the soap out of the thick piles. And then I worked on it with a wet or dry vac to **** it as dry as possible. Then I hung it on a pipe between two ladders. (you might need a middle support at 18 ft!) I also put a strong blower on it propped it open, and shot down the middle for a while, then to the outsides, and just kept the breeze moving around.

As thick as mine was it took two days to fully dry (plies were nearly a inch thick) but all dog smell was gone!

Outlaw:

Just caught up on posts.

Thanks for double-checking your ratchets. Interesting on the one 3/4 plug fitting in the 1-inch rat.

As for the model numbers for all the other drive sizes, I knew what they were. I just provided them to you in the same post. (There is no numerical model number scheme for the 9/32-inch drive akin to the 47/52/54/58 for the other drive sizes. It was only produced in the WF- series, as far as I know.) When I said, "I don't know about the 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2. Not per the wartime catalogs, anyway. 3/4 and 1, yes," it was in reply to Ole Slewfoot's postulation that all Plomb ratchets came with removeable drive plugs.

Today I attended an auction. The sun and heat were rough, the turnout was pretty poor, and the prices were some of the best I’ve ever seen at an auction! I had to control myself because I don’t have much room to spare.

...

This older man whom everything belonged to apparently gathers all this stuff from storage units or wherever to resell, and was none too happy with the bidding. He hung all over the auctioneer and kept hollaring that no one was paying attention or recognizing the significance and value of alot of stuff.

...

He certainly did alot of work in talking up and showcasing many of the items for everyone. Still, stuff went cheap in this crowd.

I was at an odd auction today, too.

Auctioneer was a woman, which I've never seen before. Actually, she was the auctioneer but she wasn't an auctioneer. She had zero auction chant. She sold stuff like an amateur, just canvassing the crowd asking for bids.

She didn't have a good handle on the bidding either. A couple times she called "sold" and then seemed to try to take additional bids on the item. A few times she lost track of the high bid or didn't know who the final winner was.

The crowd was small. No one was willing to bid on anything. Many lots went unsold at $1. DeWalt and Delta radial arm saws went unsold*. DeWalt and Delta table saws sold for $20. 20x24" Starrett granite surface plate went for $10.

That stand I bought a few pages back started at $1 and went in increments of $1 until I got it at $5. It was bizarre. They must have made more money from the food truck than the auction itself.

*Yes, I know no one wants RASs, but quality tools will always sell for $20 or $40.

Lugz I'd agree I've never seen any but the 3/4 & 1" that had removable drive plugs, short
of disassembly. "Reversible", yes, as we have all seen then assembled with the switch on the wrong side...

dkroth- sounds like a good buying day there. Don’t recall if I’ve been to one with a woman auctioneer.

I used to like going to Cash’s auctions. You probably know him or know of him. He did alot of shop related sales. Sadly he died in 2016 at 65. He was a good auctioneer, I always overspent. :) He handled a ton of big auctions.

I was surprised to learn several of his children passed in a plane crash years ago during a business trip.

Snipped this from the Archives 1938 Plomb cat.

What you have is an adapter. Now if someone finds the 1-1/4” adapter, that would be really neat too. Never seen that drive size.

RagTop, that "extension" in post 4107 is probably a special tool for an engine. I have seen similar ones for Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines of WWII vintage. Likely for access to something in the accessory section buried in the mass of hoses and wiring behind the stainless dishpan that protected the area from the exhaust system heat.

Only 1 estate sale today since it rained all day. It was half price day at an extra building that a local antique store started using for estates. Picked up a 42" wood cabinet for $10. Worked perfect for all of my planes after adding some plywood to the back. Heavy metal shelf for $10. Box of over 40 augur and other bits for a brace for $5, Blue Point pry bar for $2, very long extension for a brace and bit for $2, Craftsman speed wrench for $2.50, Stanley chalk line for $.25, and box of 14 cement tools for $7.50. The Blackhawk Socket Wrench cabinet was nice, but not for $295.

The last picture is from a sale I went back to last weekend. Picked up Stanley No. 80 cabinet scraper for $10, No. 151 spokeshave for $8, Yankee Screwdriver for $2, Arkansas stone sharpening set for $4, and 15 pieces of 3 foot poeces of wood for $6.IMG_20180609_183648_825.jpegIMG_20180609_183648_826.jpegIMG_20180609_183648_812.jpegIMG_20180609_183648_827.jpegIMG_20180609_183648_830.jpegIMG_20180609_140140_877.jpegIMG_20180602_120732_924.jpeg

more pics of the stuff from today

I saw a couple of old locks that said working from a couple of gun factories but didnt know if they would be worth $27 each... any input on these?

Those locks look like "fantasy" items, Colt was Colt Manufacturing Company, not Colt Firearms Factory.

Unless the locks were on a factory door.

RagTopTA's breaker looks Walden to me, I have one shaped just like it, but they seem to have left out or lost the detent ball for the hinge. Usually the knurls are close together, but this 3/4 example matches the wider band.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Wa...690723?hash=item2f1be896e3:g:kEQAAOSwazdanxE5

Urrea(Mexican Proto) rates their 3/4 ratchets for 12000 ft/lb, and the hinge handles a bit less. I'd say it takes a big boy to rip off a Williams like that.
There is a discrepancy in the 1" listing
The maximum recommended torque for a 1 inch ratchet handle is 22,000 in-lbs.
Will that Williams plate fit the Proto?

I'm pretty sure Ive seen a non WF 9/32 on Ebay, and it was a 48xx part number. I don't think its in any known catalog.

I saw this PWA 6003 proto ?candlesnuffer? At the tool store the other day.
The stamped hex spins freely, and there is a small dowel at the other end.

Aha! That explains it. And I didn't notice the step down in his photo. Yes, they are all shown for the 1-inch drive throughout the 40's cats, too. I didn't think the drive plugs would be interchangeable from 3/4- to 1-inch drive plug wheel openings. Thanks for following through on that, 3bay.

The Blackhawk Socket Wrench cabinet was nice, but not for $295.
Dang nice. But no, I would've had to pass, too. Thanks for posting the photo though. Good to see it.

Thanks 3bay! interesting - I wonder if they stopped selling those, but I guess it would also cut into 3/4" ratchet sales.

Never seen a 1-14" drive...

Unexpectedly, I received an invite through Mrs LesserSon today, to come look at some saws. Friends clearing grandparent’s home for sale. I expected to see some mid-century handsaws, and there was one of those, but these are what they meant. Two of the one-handed variety retain their etches, which I think will come up pretty nicely when it stops raining again long enough to work on them. I’ll document the process for anyone who’d like to try it. To me, these saws are an elegant reminder of my state history. Of course steel production and tool manufacture, but coal mining, timbering, railways - all contributed, then they may have served in those same industries. Hard to know what all they’ve seen.

Nice save LS! I'd hate to see those hanging on the wall of some sandwich shop with "modern folk art" painted on the blades...

Looking forward to the etch restore process!

Nice haul, Unaiu!

As most of you guys know I like to snap pics of interesting things I see but don't buy from time to time. The pedal car airplane, made by Murray in Ohio (see Pics 1 & 2), is for Provincial and any other flyboys on-board this thread. And I thought the homemade Harley-Davidson rockinghorse (Pic 3) was a cute idea.

Pic 4 is a heart-stopping near-miss for my professional picking career (the Ft Bliss museum gig). :pimpflash It's an early Big Bang toy, but it's missing the firing mechanism on top and the carriage in the back.

Never posted here before, but I love to see the goods everyone hauls in!

Had a great day figured I'd start sharing ever since I found my steel drawers I posted in the steel cabinet thread on the side of the road, I've been paying more attention as I drive around noting where the sales might be.

Today I was lucky enough to find a sale to get some great deals, people moving out of the state here at record rates....everything MUST go!! Lol yep right in my vehicle!

So I picked up the parts bin first that I took a picture of for $10 then three new trailer trailer tires on rims for another $10 that I didn't photograph but since he got rid of the trailer I got the two tires and the spare.

Next I get the stainless steel no name small parts drawers pictured for $3

Then I see the tool box pictured and as I'm going through it he says just give me $10 as is for that as well. Then asks if I want to fill a plastic shopping bag from the table of hardware, I was like, of course I do!

That bag got filled from the table of stuff new in boxes and new packages. Took home boxes of wire nuts, garden hose couplings and adapters, threaded hooks, lots of hinges, steel cable hardware, coping saw blades, boxes of single pole switches, duplex outlets, three way switches, single gang boxes, bags of 3/4 PVC fittings, lag screws, and some plumbing valves.

From a different sale picked up a craftsman pressure washer for $40 that's getting a tune up atm.

What a day!

ahh that makes sense as to why its bent like that and the weird number!

The wording is weird on them... hope noone else fell for it!

thanks I'll check that link out! I was wondering when I picked it up. Figured it was pretty old by that type knurling rings and no mark.

Went to a small town flea market in the city park - lots of different stuff everything from cars to perfume. quite a few tools, but none I really needed.
I'm semi-kicking myself for passing on a Waterloo 12 drawer top box plus roller bottom for $40. No need for it or place for it - if they hadn't been the economy light gauge boxes with friction slides I might have grabbed them even though She Who Has the Evil Eye was watching.

But, I did get this batch of electrical parts of types I actually use - for $5.

oh, of course, I bought some stuff here, I haven't even got out of my pickup yet... pics coming tomorrow.

I'm always on the hunt for Plomb 3/4 sockets with the 4 rings, and although it shows what tehy are capable of, I didn't get this one.

attachment.php

I did get a $5 organizer tray with some stuff in it, and 24 tools from the 2 for a buck wrench pile.
I tried to offer $15 for the whole stack, but the guy wasn't having it so I dug through the pile for the interesting ones and saved $3. Maybe 1/3 were keepers, 1/2 were low end...After I took the time so sort 100 wrenches, He tried to get me to go $25 on the lot.

attachment.php

I don't even really know what all I got, but I'll be OK with it in the morning.

Oh, and if anyone recognizes the funny tray with handles on the ends, I now have 2 and not sure what they come from.

I didn't find much this weekend. Came away from the flea market with this box of mostly Craftsman 1/4" drive bits for some sets I'm working on. Some junk mixed in as well. I guess I got my 3 bucks worth. Looks like a few of you guys hit the mother load though. Well done!

Estate sale tools still in the truck but a Craigslist deal came to fruition. Seller had listed this pack of vise-grips and was close to 2 hour round trip for me. Seller agreed to put them in his truck and meet up as he is frequently near me. I paid via Paypal when the deal was struck so he didn't think I was a random flake/no-show/tire kicker. I had bought a similar set https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7198321&postcount=3408 a month or so ago, this makes 2 "sets" of 6 in a vinyl pouch. I've only seen 2, and have bought them both.

I was there for quite a while digging through and just bought the things that jumped out at me. This guy buys out shops, storage units, ect... and he said this will be a reg thing and that he has three shops and two house full of tools and such to go through and keep adding to this every week!
First pic was the slim pickings at the Sunday flea, not many showed up...

Old Forge punch
Barcalow, Herbrand, Select Steel, Hinsdale, Blu Point wrenches
Channel Lock Duck bill pliers also picked up a wf8 Plomb ratchet a buddy grabbed at an estate sale for me.

Big sale findings
Blue Point DBE x 4 $1 each
P&C DBE $1
Proto LA stubby driver $2
Plomb WF16 extension $1
Plomb 3/8 swivels $3 for 3
Diamond adjustable green handle $2
Craftsman LongC BE breaker $1
New Britain Lady foot crow bar $2

hinsdale DBE Bent for a job, kinda like it that way.

Another semi-rainy Saturday here, plus I wasn't feeling that great. Some stops didn't look promising so I didn't even stop, probably missed a few things but what the heck...

Only one stop was actually worth stopping at:

2 pair of Klein pliers
15 Klein screwdrivers
Xcelite XL-70 Offset Ratchet Screwdriver Set

20$ for all of it.
