My wife and I started out this morning (like most Saturday mornings) at our favorite place to have breakfast, The Hungry Drover (http://www.hungrydrover.com/) a quaint, local restaurant where if you go away hungry it's your own fault

After a fine (filling) breakfast we went to find some yard sales......Making an extended round trip from the Drover back toward home, we found mostly yard sales of baby clothes and toys  then a couple of miles from the house we came across a sale that actually had tools!!!
20180623_114741.jpg

For $3 I got.....
a wooden handle ice pick
a CRESCENT wrench in need of some TLC
a pair of MAC P-25 slip joint pliers
and a pair of EREM 92C cutters

Cleaned the cutters and the MAC pliers so far.....
20180623_123334.jpg 20180623_125733.jpg

After leaving that sale, and about a mile or so further (and getting closer to home) we stopped at a yard sale that proved that I still had the golden horseshoe up my **** :D (if you guys will remember back last Wednesday when I first discovered the golden horseshoe https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7269689&postcount=4344 ) the tools at this last yard sale are the
kind of "tools" a working musician would use......

First was a small China made guitar with a lifting bridge (easy fix) for $2......
20180623_114916.jpg 20180623_114938.jpg

Well.....that buy really got the horseshoe stirred up!!!

Off to the side of the garage sat a box with the words that always makes me smile...."Make An Offer"......So, after a bit of conversation I offered $5 and I came home with.......

I haven't checked any of them out yet to see if they work but I pulled the covers off a few to check the battery......I first one (the tc electronics polytune) I opened the back to find the battery still wrapped in plastic and the screen still has the protective film on it :shocking:

They all look in like new condition, so I'd be surprised if one of them didn't work!

Thanks for watching.....Now I'm going out and buy some lottery tickets before I lose the golden horseshoe......

The young guy who sold them to me said his buddy in collage gave them to him (He majored in music....Percussion :wtf:) and that he knew NOTHING about them, he played some guitar but only acoustic......I told him that I play acoustic also and knew NOTHING about these pedals either (except that they go for a lot of money ;)) He said he'd had them a few years and was glad to get rid of them.....I was glad he got rid of them too!!!

Lugz.

I'm from Neptune. That plane came from sale in Holmdel.

Did you check out that carriage house sale in rumson today.? It was packed when I got there nothing really grab my attention.
No. I'm pretty much just flea markets these days. I was doing estate sales not so long ago, but it became more trouble than it was worth, for me, between the midweek ad reading, the calls to try to figure out what's really there, the route planning, the driving, the waiting, etc. Lots of running around and too few results, in my experience. But hey, you keep it at it. Less competition for me!

So, went to the reg flea this morning. Really nice out, yet not many vendors or people. Dug around and found a few things at vendors that I had just not really DUG around at before. Found a couple of Bonney drivers. One is a really long thin blade, the other seems to be a more modern test light built into it ?? Had an indention with a fuse inside it looks like and a screw on the handle end... on the way out to the truck I notice a small vendor had set up ion the back side with seemed to be just a buncha odd and eds homwe type stuff. Walked all the way over just in case. As I walk up I see a Craftsman socket set box with leather handle. Open it and most the tools are in it! I ask how much, the girl says $15 and the guy says $25 at the same time... I said Ill go $15... He says sold. Yay! not too bad for the shape it in. Also found an old pair of needle nose Craftsman pliers same place. hit the second flea... and found an old tool box tray filled with old sockets and tools. Asked the guy a price for all of it. $5... SOLD! there were more Craftsman H sockets and -V- sockets, along with some old Blackhawk and indestro and such... Also found a belt measuring stick like we had in our store growing up for $2!! Ended up having the speedster for the Craftsman set. Need to find out what all went in it, looks like a 1/2 and 3/8 set maybe? also missing the female ratchet drive plug.

Jim, those should pay for a few buying sprees!

And Yes, you DO ****!

Thanks for the suckage (you can call me Mike ;) :))

Yep, I got to try and figure out a good used price for them.....I'd like to try and keep one or two of them, but I've played guitar for going on 50 years and other than plugging into an amp I've never used any other effects.....so, I just might as well sell them all.....I'm to set in my ways now to learn how to use them!

Thanks for the suckage Ben

I've done some quick google research on a few of them this evening and found that the JHS Angry Charlie V2 (brownish red one with the 4 red knobs) going used from $120 to $150 on Reverb.....

The Eventide Timefactor (large one in the center) sold new for $399 :shocking: and I'm seeing used for around $199.....

I've always been amazed at how much these little electronic boxes sell for

You guys know I post some LEFT-BEHIND category photos from time to time... Well, I was sorely tempted to buy this TRUE TEMPER TOOLS hardware store display rack this morning, but I didn't. First of all, because it was more than I was willing to spend. But also because it looks like it was for rakes and garden tools and such. If the brackets up top and on the bottom were big enough for an axe handle and head, respectively, and if that space was less than 36" (the length of the axes I collect), or if it would hold shovels, I would've probably sprung for it.

Oh, and you see that hand truck behind it? That's the hand truck I didn't buy a few weeks ago when I bought the West Bend. Same seller with a whole new load of stuff, and some stuff from last week, from the same old hardware store

I had one of those True Temper stands, bought it for around $5, sold it for around $30.

I haven't been to a garage sale in WEEKS because I am both broke AND have way to many tools already. Plus I am trying to get ready for another garage sale.

However on Friday a Facebook ad popped up for a Husky rolling workbench in decent shape for only $100. I was first to respond and hooked up my small trailer and headed out. Besides the Husky workbench I also picked up a decent steel base cabinet and a locked with no key Lista wall cabinet for $30 more from the same seller.

ANYONE have an idea how to get the Lista open other than drilling the lock? No number on the lock unfortutnately.

Then on Saturday a local antique and industrial salvage place was having a closing out sale at their warehouse which I had never even been too before.

Unless otherwise marked tools were $2 each so I scarfed up the following for $16 plus $2 more for a box of new Jack Daniels posters that are not pictured.

4 Cincinnati Tool Co Pearlitic and 1 Adjustable 6" C-clamps, Snap On industrial finish wrench, Channelock fencing pliers and a Proto adjustable wrench.

However the antique / salvage company also had a bunch of FREE stuff because the lease was up in 7 days on June 30th. So I had brought my small trailer again an loaded up!

First thing I grabbed was a 10 foot long stainless steel table. The legs and frame were a bit bent and not in great shape and I will probably cut it off at 6 feet and sell it as is.

Then I grabbed a bunch of old wood that had come from a de-constructed house, still had wallpaper on a few places. I will de-nail the wood and sell it as well.

I picked up an old L shaped desk for the legs.

Finally I picked up the wood base cabinet, would make someone a good workbench.

All free!

Mike (JMLangford): Nice score on the electric guitar stuff. I see lots of vintage amps and stuff up here, but I am always afraid to lose my shirt on it. Same with some other categories, like those 1950's radios in cases made of colorful composites, or toy trucks, or or or. So many collectibles, too little time to get smart on them. :) Glad that haul is going to be a payday for you.

I had one of those True Temper stands, bought it for around $5, sold it for around $30.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Guy wanted $50.

BB, that looks to be one of the simple (cheap) 3 flat pin locks. pick it! it's easy with those:
  • Materials: 2 paperclips (I like the larger ones)
  • Two tools: straighten one leg on both paper clips and bend one into an "L" hook, the other into a zig zag with needle nose pliers.
  • Use the hook to apply rotational pressure; not much, just some.
  • Use the zig zag to "work" the pins using a back and fort motion
  • The pins should catch and once all three do you can open it.

One time I had one that once caught, I needed a screwdriver to complete the rotation once caught. (I probably had it caught a dozen times before I realized it just needed more torque than the hook could provide...)

How do people here generally plan and chose where to go?
I've been just going on CL garage sales, filter down to with 10 mile radius of the area code and look for ones with tools mentioned and see if there is any pictures or anything of interest in the ad.

Seems like pickings are much more slim than they used to be a few years ago around here.

Same here (CL Lookup) and the same here (it's slowed down; a LOT...)

I think it's all about the economy/job market. The best time for deals and lots of them are when the economy downturns, and the slowest is when everyone is busy working. (Lots of moves in economic downturn times as well, causing more sales and more "sell it all" approaches...)

Estate sales are more stable to a degree, (people always pass on...)

I see fewer "weekend warriors" at fleas when the job market is strong. a lot more regular sellers with more chi-com junk.

Slim pick'ns here too but I'd suggest you increase your search radius. (10 miles seems like a pretty small area unless you're in a small town). Don't forget estate finder and the online version of your local newspaper. Some older people still post newspaper GS ads.

This small pile was $7. The CM butterfly ratchet is perfect because the original owner coated the handle with plastic dip. Unfortunately he also engraved it.

P1090406.jpg

I found this Branson US cleaner in the as-is room of an estate sale a few weeks ago for $10. I have some larger ones but thought a compact one would be a nice addition.

When I got it hom I found the membrane touch panel was defective. The switches were bumps in an embedded membrane. One was defective and one was intermittent. I replaced all of them with flush mount waterproof switches which was a PIA project.

It also turns out the high power MOSFETs were shorted. (probably from the intermitent start stop switch cycling the unit on and off when the tank was empty). I found some identical MOSFETs on Ebay and replaced them but the unit was still dead. I got lucky and found a schematic. It turns out there's a 3 amp axial fuse to protect the RF power supply. It was blown. (obviously didn't protect the output circuit!!) I replaced the fuse and now it works perfectly. I had to make a replacement lid.

PIA project!!!

10 mile radius around the area code is pretty big area population wise around here.
I do check a 20 mile radius as well weekend, but unless I see an ad that has pictures showing something of interest or specifically mentioning stuff like old boxes, vises, stationary shop equipment etc I tend to ignore it because unless it's a sure thing, I don't want to drive that far when most ads that just have a mention of tools in them with no real pictures or description.
I think I might try the flea market next week, been a while since I've gone.
If I run I might be able to catch the tail end of todays, we'll see if it happens.

I didn't find much this weekend. A Hazet 22mm combo wrench, micro torx screwdriver and some odds and ends. I picked up a good and heavy duty 5 drawer file cabinet for free a few weeks back. Art Metal from Jamestown, NY. I'll use it to store my supplies, power tools and large hand tools that I don't use very often.

Where do you live ACE? I will regularly drive 45-60 miles for a good looking sale. But I am in the small town area between larger areas.

Southern NH. Maybe if I saw something really good I'd be willing to go that far, but 1/3 of a tank and the time as well as looking through the 400 sales a week they got on craigslist would just be too exhaustive if I expand my search out 60 miles. I have a large car, but still a car so even if I did find something it'd be somewhat difficult for larger items like a tool box larger than 36 inches wide.

Oh I forgot to mention, I did manage to go to the flea market, glad I didn't wait a week to go, mostly junk.
Spent $4, got a newer 6" snap on extension, an all metal williams 1/4 spinner handle that also functions as an extension, and a proto 15mm wrench. No ratchets besides the standard junk ones that come in the hf $4 socket set, 2 raised panels and one new birtain nb40. Was kinda tempted to pick up the nb40, but I was so so at $3, I don't really care for the really old ratchet designs, I try to keep my stuff still being able to be used, that'd be more just taking up room in the box. Oldest ratchets I'd feel comfrotable using are the SK round head designs and plomb/proto pear heads. Anything older than that is more of a novelty for me.

Found a few YS's and went back to the Friday estate sale for 1/2 off day.

STILL no TOOS out there... :headscrat

First stop was dead, second was an apartment complex Flea: Spent two bucks:

Some cables and USB wall plugs. the 3MM to RCA's are almost a consumable for me. they get used all the time... Th USB to Phone USB ARE consumable as they don't last long...

attachment.php

Also got this contraption which tuned out to be a lantern stand the ladies father made up.

attachment.php

A one day Estate sale netted some oddities and mini projects for six bucks:

An older GPS that once plugged in and charged, then reset, works fine! some webbing for future projects; The mini Impact he gave to me, and it is a no battery Dewalt that I'm hoping is 12V. If so I'll add a cord to it and use it corded as a mobile tool in may rig! (Does anyone know if there is a Battery tool thread for fixes and mods??) Lastly is a sample of some water main pipe!

attachment.php

Yes it's wood, and yes, its REALLY old! It's already been out of the ground for over 50 years! This was 5 of the 6 bucks.

attachment.php

Last stop was the Friday Estate sale and the overpriced vise was till there! Half off day so its not anymore!

591 3" Rock Island, and other than rust, in almost perfect shape! (More pics in the Vise thread later today)

You REALLY **** on that Craftsman box and sockets RT!!!!!! I mean that sincerely! Great finds!

Thanks I was super excited to see it, any idea how to date that set? C man is not a brand I have learned a lot about yet when it comes to the vintage stuff. But I sure like it! I have also found a deep socket 1/2 set in the box with L handle and a 1/4 set or two as well at the same place.

Will this plug fit your ratchet?

I dont know, Ill measure it tonight and see! thanks! Ill pm you!

I managed to stay focused and only spent 12 bucks at the flea market. Got some pretty cool stuff. Heavy on the plomb/proto.

- 1/2" firestone ratchet
-long C Craftsman doe
-Walden Worcester 9/32 flexible extension!
-proto Los Angeles tappet wrench, 1/2" combo, and 5424 socket
-proto screwdriver, 3225, 3026,and 1211
-plomb 3320 ignition wrench
-plomb wf-30, 5020, and 5416 sockets
-the belle of the ball: an "A PLOMB" 5/16 wrench. The oldest plomb I've found

Yes it's wood, and yes, its REALLY old! It's already been out of the ground for over 50 years! This was 5 of the 6 bucks.

Thanks EC!

I got a bit more on the history/age of the water-main: Beacon Hill reservoir was a building to store water for part of Boston and was above ground - HUGE masonry walls; >2.5 million gallons capacity!) It was built from 1847 to 1849 when it went into service. it was decommissioned and demolished in 1880.

Form the plaque the main went from the BH reservoir, to the hospital as a feed line (it was about 2" ID) and presumably was put in about the same time frame, so this log section was cut in the late 1840's, dug up in 1967 (excavation for other construction?) so was in the ground for about 120 years, + the 51 since '67, so call it 170 year old wood!

The treatment of the wood is interesting: They core drilled it (that had to be entertaining in the late 1840's!) and burned the outside, presumably to preserve the inside better? :dunno:

RT,
I don't know how to date it. Post it over in the vintage toolboxes thread. Maybe Rileysan or someone else will know how.

I returned to the Tahoe area this morning and hit an estate sale and the Tahoe flea. It was the last day of the estate sale so pickings were slim. At the flea I found some metric Easco combos for Username and a set of Craftsman metric ratchet wrenches which I will keep. My neighbor was in Miami but I grabbed the German wrenches for him after a quick text.

At our local’s training school we have a section of wooden electrical conduit.
