September after the holiday and schools start back up seems to bring out some good tool sales around here.

Nice find.

Cool. If you're interested, there is a thread on the Vintage Board, not very active, but I have a posted a few things, and so have a few other guys, linked here.

Lugnutz,

Thanks for the link for the safety glasses I will check it out. My own prescription safety glasses are so old school looking some folks wonder where I could even get them anymore, but they do the job.

Thanks, we probably will not cut up any poultry with them, they will do a fine job on workshop projects.

As a side note, I was recently watching Martha Stewart get some instruction on cutting up chickens from her favorite butcher. Neither of them had one of these, they both used cleavers. Surprisingly, she usually has one of everything......maybe she should be reading this.

If you're cutting up a lot of chickens, you can do it faster with shears. Of course, they also work on Cornish Hens, rabbits etc.

Awesome finds guys! I love that vise table Outlaw! The wall safe and military cabinets are cool too. Too many cool things to mention, you guys are rocking!

Nothing from any sales here, I just picked up a Milwaukee Hackzall from 5miles though.

After Jakes, Mrs LS & I met our middle daughter for lunch in Montgomeryville, then headed up 309 to the Quakertown flea. Spotted a 1945 No85 Ferret set missing the sliding tee and the two shorter extensions, but with deflated wallet, didn’t even ask a price. (That vendor knows his stock. I bought a Par-X 3/8 speeder from him a couple weeks ago for $8.) Picked up a few more small items totalling $6.
K&F rasp, turned wood drill bit holder (no cap), unmarked 1/2sqdr uni adapter, Klein chain nose pliers (O-K-EI I think 1945), Bonney no_O4 screwdriver, Stanley no2752 Phillips screwdriver, 7/16 Proro combo, Klein 202-5 dikes (triangleMNM, Jan1961?), Black Diamond bracebit file, maleable iron clamp, Barcalo Buffalo dikes, pre-1921 Bonney 553AS DOE, LongC pin punch, longC 7/16 combo, USNickel-Molybdenum DBE, longC shorty DBE.

That "turned wood drill bit holder" appears to be a Starrett 4" long drive pin punch holder. The decal is on the missing top cap. I just compared your pictures to my complete set. Diameter 2 1/4" inch and height of the part you have 2 15/16"?

On another note did you get my PM about the Bonney 2826 single offset DBE I have?

Missed tool hunting this past weekend, so got out to do a little on Monday. Had time to sort through 100+ pounds of wrenches at the local pawn shop (didn't even touch their sockets....) and came away with several partial sets (Craftsman SAE and metric), some pairs (Blackhawk BW-11xx) and a good mix of "stray cats" [Plvmb pebble 1224, (X) 1723, Craftsman SDBE, SnapOn and BluePoint combos and a S/O XV-1214, and a New Britian 7/16 combo].

Already have some Craftsman SAE stray cats in the garage to flesh out that set a little.

Wow! Good eye!
Yes, 2-15/16”h, 2”diam where the cap would fit, and a tad over 2-1/4”diam (not quite 2-9/32”) at the base. I searched the vendor’s heap for a cap, but turned up nothing. Is it the same color as the base?
It bothered me that all the holes but one were the same size, but I didn’t immediately think of punches. Now I see the marks where the shoulders of the largest two punches rested on the wood.
I NEVER would have figured out it was Starrett on my own. Thanks! (I don’t think I have a Starrett punch, but it holds pencils like nobody’s business.)

As for the Zenel single offset, yes. I’ve been holding my breath for a chrome-plated 2826 to match my other sizes, but I haven’t seen one. Yours looks cad-plated?

Depends on how far back he went. A week ago Sunday, I picked up a Wilton, and the CI table top it was bolted to.

Big sale for those in the Buffalo NY area. Surprisingly judging from the photo's I don't see much in the way of truck brand tools given that the guy had his own shop. Perhaps those were sold or picked previously when he closed up shop. Sale like this you would have take multiple passes to take everything in. Unfortunately this company tends to be high on the tool prices.

So 3bay coming up this week? :hellobye:

Oh, man. I was in Tonawonda last Sunday. Of course, I was on a bicycle starting a thru ride of the Erie Canal trail, so I wouldn't have gotten much. Would have been nice to see it, though.

They actually extended the sale into Sunday and the trail literally looks to be about 1/2 mile from the house in Tonawanda. But tough to carry much on a bike. Looks like you would have passed through my town. Have a good and safe trip

Thanks, WNYflyer. We actually biked the whole trail in six days, finishing last Friday. It was a great experience!

Hope you get a chance to hit the sale!

That sounds like a good time. Heck of a ride I bet! I would have loved to bike with you that part of the stretch if I was there. One of my favorite things is biking around Buffalo and the Tonawandas.

Small but interesting haul of smalls today at the Triple Early Bird.

- The screwdriver is not marked. The screw holder is marked but it's hard to read. I'll try again later after I clean it up. It's not an Upson HOLD-E-ZEE, that's for sure, because it's not the same design (tension clips, vs a spring). I am guessing this is older, too.

- The 4-1/2" No. 5 midget pliers (1939) and the 4-1/2" No. 85 dykes (1945) are both Snap-on Vacuum Grips. That little 1/4-inch combo wrench tie clasp at the bottom is also a Snap-on. I wish it was the early logo, but it's the logo that popped up during the war on limited tools (e.g., Ferret) and then became the logo on everything postwar through 50's logo. I will be posting more pics of all three of these items in the Snap-on thread.

- The short 1/2-drive extension is a "just in case" buy PENENS 1666. I might already have one in my set, might not, but it was only $1 and well worth the risk of being a dupe.

- The metallic lipstick case is a nifty all-in-one driver. I will post more pics later, but basically, the bits are inside, they fit into a notch where the two ends of the case screw together, and the case becomes a T-handle. There are so many variations of little pocket drivers, so many approaches, from many mfgrs (Chapman, Hallowell, Oxwall, etc), but this is the first time I have seen this particular design. I like it. And I am guessing 40's or 50's. If anyone knows anything about it, please let me know.

- The jewelry box has a very cool Bell System accessory in it. Have fun guessing what it is and check in with the Bell System thread later to see if you were right or not.

bluebolt,
thats interesting. Looks like all the handle ends fit inside their respective homes, including the two largest. Makes me wonder if there were two size ranges offered that went in the same size holder, or if a previous owner just kept two larger-size punches than belonged in the set, because the pressed marks in mine clearly indicate handle ends wider than the holes.

Lugz,
Congrats on those VacuumGrips! Curious about what Bell System dingus fits in a jewelry box...

An update on my new old Utica display: as I was letting the pressboard backing dry in the sun, it began delaminating... from a veneer core! The thought to replace it with a non-contaminated, thicker/stronger sheet of plywood is getting more attractive. I’m too much of a hoarder to just toss the original, but the options of how to deal with the funk just got broader, especially if the red velour face side decides to delaminate, too. Maybe I should start a thread, or hunt down a Utica thread (there’s gotta be one, right?) to continue this project elsewhere.

Edit: there are ten Utica threads, all pretty specific. I chose to piggyback on NJ Marty’s thread from two years ago, on his identical (well, better condition, and more complete) Utica Display Case.

It's another tie clasp! You can see it here.

I also posted close-ups of the Grasp-It screwdriver here, the all-in-one tool-set (in the metallic case) here, and the Snappy stuff here (and make sure to scroll down one post for the tie clasp).

That tape measure is wild.
Agreed, and I'd like to see close-ups. I've seen square-ish case, but I wonder why they would make it so long? You should post more photos in Unaiu's tape measure thread. EDIT: Never mind - I see that you already did!

This is one of my favorite threads here. :) The thing that interests me is after a while you notice that some people are obviously collectors of a certain type or brand of tool, while others are all over the place in their buying habits.

Agreed, and I'm not saying that just because I'm hosting this year. This has been my first go-to thread since 2012. The 'stories behind the collectors', so to speak, are just as interesting as the stories behind the tools and the tools themselves, and they get revealed not so much in narrative form but in habits and patterns. And the 'asides' often reveal more about personality than even the shopping habits. The 'human interest' angle has always been strong on this thread.

Almost like that tape measure is designed to occupy some slot on an airplane or something like that. Weird shape, stamped aluminium.

ALL: I found another lumber/farm/warehouse cart that really can haul some heavy stuff over some bumpy terrain. not sure if any of you own one of these, but i've got a bigger one that is 7 or 8 feet long and i've pushed around 1000-2000 pounds of stuff on it with ease especially if the surface was flat.

I found some interesting printing on the bottom of this 6 footer that is about 30 inches wide that looks like maybe it left the factory in 1937 or maybe that was just the owner's markings from the Crane Co.?

i've got some new wheels sitting on a shelf i can replace the big wheels with, but we'll see if I want to fully restore it or use it as is.

anybody else have one? maybe I should start a vintage CART THREAD?

I also picked up this big 5 foot wide 2 foot deep cabinet that I almost can't lift even with the drawers out that should hold a lot of stuff.

cheers and best of luck to all of you that keep posting up your cool finds so you can keep posting pictures of your new ones.

I had another small but quality haul at my double early bird flea market today.

attachment.php

TOP TO BOTTOM:

- That leatherette roll-up is a complete Blue-Point chisel set. Tools too rusty to read model numbers or date codes, but it looks 1940's to me. I will verify after de-rusting.

- The extra heavy duty machinists' screwdriver is not marked, which is good. That means it was probably ink-stamped on the handle, which indicates wartime.

- The little dinky ignition multi-tool is a prize. DOE ignition wrench with a box end hex opening in the middle of the bent shank and two copper feeler gages, one marked 'SPARK PLUGS' and the other marked, verbatim, 'FOR MAGNETOES'. I have a similar SOE wrench with two feeler leafs, one marked SPARK PLUGS and the other marked DISTRIBUTOR, and I know a few other guys here have them as well. Those are not marked. This one has a funky logo on it that I can't decipher. It may help identify the others. I will be starting a thread on it.

- The 12" Diamalloy has no horseshoe logo, which makes it wartime. I have an 8" Diamalloy just waiting for a mate. The WWII GMTK's had that pair.

- The torque wrench is an APCO Mossberg with a wartime Federal Stock Number on it. When I get home I need to check my references to see what kit it went to.

- The 1/2-inch drive Sliding Tee is a THRUTH.

You may be onto something there. I'm trying to figure out the "3-in-1" branding. I see two. The tape itself and the case can be used as a rule with the tape retracted. We're talking about it on the 'Tape Measure' thread. Active on page 1 Vintage board.

That thing is awesome. Feel free to post at the end of my Vintage Hand Truck thread, if you'd like, Drives. In hindsight, I probably should've included carts in the title, too. Oregon rock crusher and a few other guys have posted photos of trucks and carts. Or if you prefer to start a new thread, no problem. I will definitely subscribe!

Drives,

Maybe you should start a thread on how to move all those huge heavy items by yourself. That cabinet looks like a back breaker! :shocking:

Cool find on the Apco Mossberg torque wrench Lugz. I assume the end is a ratcheting adapter that comes off...
Thanks, and yup! The pop-up kind. In WWII, four (4) of these torque indicating wrenches were issued to 4th Echelon Set No. 2, a unit level set of equipment that was used by 80 mechanics, carried in nine (9) 2-1/2-ton GMC 6 x 6 cargo trucks, to service 3,000 vehicles. :bounce:

Thanks, bb. Just posted.

Sounds like a great trip, BB. Without me having to find out how long the Erie Canal trail is and dividing by 6, how many miles did you ride each day?

It was a great ride. We averaged 60-70 miles a day. Long distances, for sure, but we stayed in hotels every night, vice camping.

Where did you stop in Rochester? Overnight?

.

In Rochester, we stayed at a hotel across the canal from the REI on East Henrietta Rd, on the south side of town.

That sounds like a good time. Heck of a ride I bet! I would have loved to bike with you that part of the stretch if I was there. One of my favorite things is biking around Buffalo and the Tonawandas.

The trail from Canalside north out of Buffalo were interesting--some dedicated trails, some road, but on a Sunday morning, the highlight was biking through the downtown high rises to the start point at 6:30 in the morning, with almost no traffic, only to find huge crowds at the Canalside park for an American Idol audition...!

As I said above, no tools related purchases on the bike trip, but I did find some neat vintage tools in blacksmith shop and the saw mill at the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Musem. I knew the folks on this thread would appreciate them, so I took some pictures of "things I saw but did not buy".
