Unless this is all hogwash of the highest order, it completely Negates the already disqualified
Single use
Statute
Due to the 1939 date of the statute.
It could not have been in anticipation of the Jerry can.
The designation of the numbers would be the same as I have conceded, but the article linked above dates the statute as not slightly regarding Jerry cans... Again.

We need to find the patent date if it was patentable in the USA.
Yep, hogwash of the highest order. How can I have a can dated ‘41 when they allegedly weren’t invented yet? The FSN for the 5 gallon can is 42-D-1280 as can be seen in the RA PD image. Check out the markings on my new (to me) 2-1/2 gallon Blitz gas can I picked up on Saturday. Blitz is a brand name of USMC, a wartime can manufacturer.

LesserSon,
Not sure what you mean by "jurisdiction,"[/QUOTE]
I meant, and only meant, “the legitimate, federal authority of the United States of America”.
I am looking at this from a marketplace perspective. The US govt does not manufacture these cans, it buys them. USA is one customer. Surely, over the past eight decades, other governments on this planet, be they allies or not, have required same-function cans, and have either created their own specs or accepted those of the USA. During WWII, I believe USA-made cans (really, any products) outstripped production of any other nation, but afterwards, offshore manufacturers must have had the capability and the economic incentive to make jerry cans.
For manufacturers of any stripe to continue to emboss the numbers on the bottom, there must be a contractual obligation or market demand for that detail. You don’t need an obscure, lost, or tangental federal regulation to explain the “20”- just one manufacturer to state why they do it.

Lesser Son,
Did you take a close look at my red small USMC made 1987 Blitz gas can posted above. It has the gauge marking as well as a separate marking for 9.5 Liters capacity. To me, that pretty much rules out any possibility of the 20 referring to capacity. After WW2 there was such a huge surplus of US made 5 gallon cans left all over the world, I can’t imagine that there was much demand for new offshore made ones for decades. I still see them at many sales and I personally only rarely check out any but the green ones.

When I got up this morning to check all the updates on my phone, I got all excited for a see a bunch of new posts in the garage sale thread..., while the argument of how thick a jerry can should be and it’s markings is very riveting, I am wondering if we should perhaps start a thread for this discussion? Not only to preserve the arguments and research but to also return the garage sale thread to its intended purpose of sale finds ?[emoji51] I like seeing rusty Kerry cans but I like rusty gold more !

I don't need the lost spec to explain the "20", LS. I can deduce its meaning from the other specs. The spec would be nice to verify, or, surprise surprise, discover an anomaly, but as I said, there is really no question about it within the WWII collecting community. Contacting a manufacturer, if you can find one still in business, with a vibrant historical dept, or someone who emerged with that passion, usually in family-owned businesses, is certainly an alternative, if you want to go that route. I and nobody I know have had much luck with this route on any question about any tool or piece of equipment from 70 years ago, so my energy for that is long gone, but good luck, and please let us know if you get any answers.

Got a pile of vintage stuff recently, total price for everything was $20 or so. Lots of Plomb, long-C Craftsman, and some items that can be used in my GMTK project. Got a neat brass Coke bottle, probably an imported novelty, but it's cool. Couple drag links (1 Duro and 1 Herbrand), which aren't a common find. All in all a lot of smaller neat vintage goodies.

Duct Tape Man, you've got an eye for picking up the right things. I especially like the NAF marked short DBE and the U.S. marked Williams extension. How far along are you on your GMTK project?

Oh, I concur, ducksface. And there's nothing wrong with deep dives like that on any collectible subject like that here from time to time. In fact, this thread is known for them. Over the years we've had Coleman lantern excursions, anvil dating excursions, hydraulic jack excursions, etc. So no reason for anyone involved in the discussion to be sorry. Having said that, prior hosts have always sought to keep them civil and also move them along after awhile before they become a distraction.

I am TDY, so away from my flea market, but I am sure someone will come along with a haul or score shortly, and the weekend hauls and scores will get us right back on track.

All good.

Can’t wait to see what you guys pull this week. I’ll be doing some tool hunting hopefully Friday and Saturday so I will report back!

Oh and there is a estate sale that has two old snap on boxes but have no idea if they have tools. Could be loaded. Problem is I have dealt with the company before and we do not get along to well. Not sure if I am even going to take a crack at it but it’s so tempting.

Gentlemen,

I do not own a jerry can from the US or any other country and really don't care that much but have spent my whole career dealing with federal specifications in aviation so thought I would find the spec to but this to bed once and for all. I went looking for the AN (Army/Navy) specification for a jerry can in the early years and didn't find one which surprised me. I did find the MIL spec for a US jerry can which has been around since the 1960s (MIL-C-1283) and is at revision F being the latest I could find. You will find that this specification will tie together all your questions as to why the different marking specifications are used if you take the time read it.

I also found this interesting reading from the beginning of Wikipedia on jerry cans and where they started and the size of them. Enjoy because it looks to me like you are all correct, which is a pleasant outcome for a very civil internet debate that I rarely see.

A jerrycan (also written as jerry can or jerrican) is a robust liquid container made from pressed steel. It was designed in Germany in the 1930s for military use to hold 20 litres (4.4 imp gal; 5.3 US gal) of fuel. The development of the jerrycan was a significant improvement on earlier designs, which required tools and funnels to use. Today similar designs are used for fuel and water containers, some of which are also produced in plastic. The designs usually emulate the original steel design and are still known as jerrycans.

Jerrycans. The stamped indentations on the sides serve two purposes: firstly to stiffen the side sheet metal; secondly to allow greater surface area for expansion and contraction of the contents with heat and cold. Different colours designate the contents.
Uses for the cans have expanded beyond the original intended use of carrying fuel. Today, a can's use is denoted by its colouring, and occasionally, imprinted labelling on the container itself. This is to prevent contamination of the can's contents by mixing different fuels or mixing fuel with water."

I believe that NAF marked double box was made by Bonney, mine is identical to the one pictured on AA site, but without the BONNEY name on it.

I only started getting together my GMTK stuff in the last 8 months or so, maybe a couple dozen pieces or so. All pieces were locally found at fleas and garage sales, no online purchases (eBay, etc.). What's the fun in building a kit when you can easily find the pieces on the auction sites? Part of the fun is in the hunt!

So. Cal Estate Sale 9/28 - 9/30 2018

There will be an estate sale at 826 Huntley in West Hollywood this weekend. The sale includes lots of tools and hardware items. There are such things as an Athol vise, a NIB HF Generator a couple of air compressors a Craftsman rollaway full of tools, and many, many, other tools and hardware items. It officially begins on Saturday 8/30 but there will be a crew working from about 9 AM to 1 PM on Friday 9/30 to do the final prep and GJ members who show up will not be turned away. It will all be priced to sell.
Parking in the area is a nightmare and is enforced so be careful. Attached are some pics.

Since the feds got rid of useful spouts on gas cans , I use the Jerry cans that are blue , made for water , same material just different color and spouts that actually pour

The Machinery's Handbook is a 9th edition. One page at the beginning of the book is a color picture. Is my book authentic (say 1937)? I've been wanting one of these.

Picked up this old Climax (there has to be a joke somewhere) toolbox at a garage sale for $5. Looks like it was green in a past life before someone bombed it gold. Not sure if I can remove the gold without removing the green as well.

Have been out of the loop a while with work and lots of busy real life stuff. But had today off and hit an Estate sale. From the pics I could see a very fuzzy Block grinder in the background. got there 45 min early to be number 10 in line. By the opening time, there are 75 people in line. Off to the races we go. into the garage people looking at everything. I scan the garage.. no grinder. Ask about it. directed me to the backyard there's a small shop. there she sits on a pedestal. $20 price tag! Grabbed it and told the nearest guy I was buying it. While looking around in the little shop for about 20 min gathers other stuff several people tried to put a SOLD sticker on it and claim it. I was standing there beside it as one older guy rips my SOLD tag off it and tries to put one of his own on it. I quickly told him I have already bought it. He was caught red-handed. OHHH I thought it said $10 on the tag... it plainly said SOLD. Also, an old Duro set I bought last week at an E-sale for $5 looks pretty complete.

also acquired a small Stanley plane, Dremel tool kit, C clamp, and a tire tool.

I stopped at an estate sale that advertised a lot of antique tools. It turned out they had some tools but not many, and the pricing was really odd: there were a few decent handsaws, but they were all grouped together in a pretty standard Craftsman carpenter's toolbox along with a few other odd things (an eggbeater hand drill, a couple screwdrivers) with a price tag of $150. Then there was a box with a half dozen worn out old files that was marked $50. They had a Harbor Freight bench grinder marked higher than they cost new at the store. On the other hand, there was a bucket full of pretty decent forged steel C clamps for $10, so I bought that.

Hit an estate sale yesterday, and one today. Yesterdays was OK, but I wasn't expecting much and it was close by. Todays looked great in the pics, but it was kinda far. So I figured what the heck lets do it, it starts at 11 but I can't make it til noon. Get there, still have to wait in line, finely get inside, and the prices are sky high! 75 bucks for an old SK set kinda high. Manage to find a couple things that weren't too bad. Got the Speedex tin full of machine screws and the extension yesterday for $3 and the P&C rat and Whitney punch today for $10.50

Picked up a couple Proto obstruction wrenches and a dbe Craftsman, router guides, a flask and a steam cleaner today.

I did NOT buy the ($60)grinder but the base is cool as ever. Anyone recognize the maker? I didn't see any names.12f00cb1ebbe701bf8c7b885c859fb57.jpge4b3c2be94eeaf9605a469f84ae694ce.jpgd8d62e2b4c3e87cbefc88fa258de1385.jpg

Matt: looks like you have the clamp attachment with your versa vise. do you? more pics please cause that isn't all that common. nice find!!

ALL: I pick up this and thats quite often and forget to post so I took a picture of a small stop. can anybody have enough carpenter pencils? well i think I have enough now. not sure if i'm keeping this montgomery wards dremel, but it came home with me and I'll see if it competes with my Fein, old craftsman dremel tool and several dremel tools I already own.

I also don't think any of us can own too many small paint brushes and i'm going to start brushing on BLO instead of using rags cause i'm tired of making rags out of old T shirts and only getting one BLO use out of them.

hope you all have a great weekend.

Here’s some more photos of the base. The last one I bought had a different base. This base required a hole in the workbench to mount. Seems like an odd design.

Hit a couple yard sales and a local flea today. $5 total. Most mysterious item is the unmarked knurled aluminum drill bit holder (4-tooth chuck). It had a steel pocket clip on it marked “made in usa” which may very well be original (it’s a perfect fit). Also a Snap-on 5/8 shallow socket wrench, a Craftsman stubby anvil pruner with remnants of dark blue paint clinging to the aluminum handles, a bottle opener, a Stanley 100 screwdriver, a Lufkin 6” rule, and a heavy-bodied 5-sided star punch. (Suggestive of Indestro or Bog sockets.)

Matt: I can't recall seeing that base before on anybody else's versa vises. pretty interesting. I'm wondering if the part that looks like an old Allen wrench was welded on or maybe it was to hold the bottom of maybe a 3 or 4 by that you could maybe mount the base too by drilling a hole in it?

did you post this over on the big vise thread and see if any of those guys might have one or their thoughts on how they'd mount it?

ALL: enjoy your weekend and hope to see a few more cool finds some of you seem to find almost daily.

On Friday, I went to buy a Woodpecker's Paolini Pocket Rule from a CL ad. A few more red accessories followed me home. If you're not a woodworker or a box-maker you probably won't care. I was excited. I love Woodpecker's tools but their prices are a bit out of my range. A few of these box clamps will get put to work this week.

Very nice score on the Woodpeckers gear! I'm like you because I love their stuff but find it a little too expensive.

5 BSA drinking glass, double sided printing....$3.00

6. Snoopy & Red Baron Game 1970.....$8.00

At the risk of angering those who are fed up with 5 gallon gas cans, could we see the markings on the bottoms of the cans?

Minimal day, as there were minimal sales...

This stuff came from one about a block away. Suspenders that appear to be NOS, and a NOS replacement globe for the common 2 mantle lanterns.

That will be it for me for more than a week as I leave tomorrow for a hunting trip. I'd have left O dark thirty today, or even late yesterday, but I'm just getting the trailer packing organized... Heck I haven't even bought food...
