...a respiratory virus put me DOWN, in bed, right through Christmas. Spent this week eBaying and coughing. I still feel like ****, but managed to hang a CD rack on the wall for Mrs LesserSon today.

Yeah, I also caught a bug on Christmas eve morn that shot my noggin full of congestion, with a little coughing and some light chills thrown in (to make it feel like Christmas, I guess). Feeling better today, but will be hitting up the Nyquil again tonight.

Speaking of Ebay, someone sniped what was going to be the centerpiece of my 2019 POTY trophy. So, I'm back to square one.

So as to not get too far OT, I went trash picking. My friends have a store, and their neighbors use the dumpster. The neighbor is a warehouse for an outdoor goods chain. They try to ruin all the returns and closeouts before putting them in the trash, but sometimes they slip up.

Heres my new giant sleeping bag that exactly fits the bed in my camper. The pillow flap mat is the stuff sack, sweet! I usually use blankets, but will give this a try.

Hi, First posting of something I’ve got. Weather here in the UK cold, icy with a little snow, just a tad over freezing.
Here’s what I bought from someone advertising on Shpock - similar site to Craigslist. 4 new old stock Peli Products / Pelican VersaBrite II Flashlights. For the grand sum of £2, approx. 65 cents each in $.

Just thought I’d give you all an update on what I did with these flashlights (torches as we call them in the U.K.). Sold them all on eBay and made £40 / $50, to spend on something else.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year.

Lots of confidence in the dark days of winter--I like it!

Another foray into my dad's treasure house of scrap iron produced a True Temper Kelly Perfect Jersey-pattern felling ax head. The poll is pretty beat up, but I think the cutting edge still has some life in it.a7adb806ee750121cdf61d721de51b58.jpg2932e851ca6dce1ea5cd66cdc3a4c4c7.jpg

BB, I love your axe finds. I grew up in the woods, vintage axes are an affliction.

It’s a nice data point also that they were in the scrap pile. Yes, it’s true that we’ve had less and less use for axes as time has gone on. But another factor is that contrary to the commonly held concept that our grandpappies were expert at reuse/repair/recycle/etc, for large chunks of our history, this equation has applied:
(Working mans wage * Amount of time to properly rehandle) + materials is > cost of new axe.

A few of us here are always on the lookout for Dayton pattern #4's. That was the WWII jeep axe. I have only found three in seven years and one of those, a KELLY TT, was marked BELL SYSTEM on the flip side. Probably from a lineman's jeep. I sold the others and put that one on my 45 Willys MB. That marking is the side facing the body, you can't see it when it's in the holder, and nobody the wiser! Also, I'm not a gussied up unit markings kind of guy so my jeep could pass as Army, logging, lineman's, farming, etc. Personally, I thought it's what it made it unique and stand out more, not less. Like an early CJ-2 instead of a late MB. :)

BB: yep I have a few of those old axe heads laying around here that are ON THE LIST (never ending TO DO LIST) to shine up and put back on a handle. of course SHANNY is right that spending the time to make that axe like new will take a bit of time and money and not maybe work as well as a power tool, but I for one like the OLD TOOLS and EXERCISE isn't necessarily a bad thing.

speaking of restoring that old rusty axe head have you seen the tool polisher's thread where a few guys have shined theirs up with up to 1000 grit sandpaper?

SHANNY: I love your AVATAR and to take that one step further I was probably 40 years old before I quit using a ratchet instead of a breaker bar to loosen rusty bolts.

ALL: My store is open year round, but dang the storage fees to store some of this cool stuff really does kill a good deal. that said i'm still shopping. here's to a great 2019 for all of you and may your find your HOLY GRAILS that you search for.

cheers

Not a great deal of shows/car boots/ autojumbles in the North of England at this time of year but nipped over to Doncaster today for an antiques fair.

Picked up a little machinists RABONE spirit level (£10) and an aluminium flare can (£2).

Been after a machinist level a while and £10 was fair. No idea what the flare can will be used for but at £2 why not [emoji28] View attachment 844787DSC_1099.jpg

Thanks, guys. I regularly refer to my dad's stash of old, salvaged, or spare parts as his "treasury" to counter my mom's view of it as a junk pile that needs to go. I use similar language with SWMBO wrt my own piles at home.

Same here, BB, but sometimes it helps to get a little assistance from strangers. Today was my lucky day! My furnace shut down overnight. So I started a fire in each fireplace and went to work waiting to hear the damage from the CINC-HOUSE. Not bad. Just a thermocoupler. The story my wife told me might've been worth the bill! As you know, the furnace is in the basement, behind the Lugzsonian. Rich (my plumber) hasn't been here in awhile, and while he and his helper were waiting for it to fire up again, they got nosey and looked around. My wife said their eyes got real big and they were heaping praise on everything, saying it should be "in a museum." Now it took a lot for my wife to admit they said this, so I didn't ruin the moment by told-you-soing her. Apparently, Rich's daughter lives in Attleboro, Mass., so he took a picture of the Mossberg tool board and she got a big kick out of it. The Lugzsonian's first official visitors not named Lugnutz! I may need a guest book! :)

Great story! Too bad you weren't there to see them. Glad the furnace fix was an easy one.

I don't want to get ahead of myself but I just may have a freecycle pickup before the end of the year. Nothing amazing, but a last minute scoop just the same.

I think that poll is just ready to do some more chassis work.

And on the topic of axen, does a stamping of just a P ring a bell for any of our woodsmen?

Wow, what a cool score!!

Thanks.

3 Bay, that guy lied to ya, he didn't throw those out.
I stopped by your house to show you all the neat storage boxes and road box, but your girlfriend said you was out walking the dog.
So I went home and thought someone stole them out of my truck, guess they fell out by your house. Man I'm glad you found them:lol_hitti

JK...... You Really ****. Great save, you know they've been scrapped.

Craig

Thanks.

:lol_hitti. Nice try. You are the local cabinet guru.

Continued from the Christmas Eve curbside haul, an Adrian Steel cabinet.

42” long by 16-1/2” wide. Not too bad, 6 drawers. Dividers in the top that can be rearranged. Some misc. AC parts.

ON, I like oddball containers like that. If you don't have them, you can't purpose them!

attachment.php

I picked up n aluminum arc welding rod container a while back, and it now houses a 22X spotting scope. Polished with mothers, it doesn't look half bad! Now that I have a window mount 'pod holder, It will get a LOT more use!

Oddball containers....
I went out to this old chicken farm in Livermore to look at 22 cars some guy wants to move along. It's immediately apparent the long low chicken habitats have been turned to machine/car/bike sheds. After a few minutes we make contact with the guy who says look around, he'll be down in a little bit.
There's wood carving machines, half bikes, v12 Lincoln motors, y blocks, Corvairs, etc.
A heap of aluminum screwtop containers catch my eye. They are small thermos sized, and real nicely machined. I struggle to make out the stencil, and it reads something like 'depleted uranium, handle with care'. I put that right back down and tried to forget I'd ever seen it.

ALL: speaking of oddball containers. when I bought the med carts I got 2 boxes of new pee cups (so maybe 200 containers with lids) and another box of pill containers without the lids. not sure what i'm going to do with either so maybe i'll figure out something. I like little metal containers a lot more if i had my choice.

Lug: great story about the repair guys checking out your MAN CAVE and then giving you KUDOS to your wife. I wish I was as Organized as you are, but then again I probably could be if I didn't have so much STUFF.

Thanks to the kindness of some local folks on Freecycle, I got another bit of goodies before the end of 2018! I believe this is my first ever freecycle pickup. I have only used it before to pass things along.

A vintage Craftsman bandsaw - needs a good cleaning and some rewiring and it will be put to good use!

While I was picking this up they also offered this Wissota bench grinder, which I will put to good use. I will post it in the Wissota Grinder thread once I get it cleaned up.

And finally, a 6 inch Westcott wrench - I love the look of these and have a variety of sizes. I need to get them all together for a display.

This should give me some more to work on this weekend!

Not that I know this from personal experience, maybe I heard about this in a bar somewhere......... :rolleyes2

..... but if someone were to have a need to discreetly spread a loved ones ashes in every nook and cranny of a semi-populated Valley in, oh let’s say... the northwoods of Maine, without anyone noticing, a collection of smallish containers with screw lids would come in very handy.
Jus’ sayin

Just got a couple boxes off FB marketplace. They had left before the holidays, so was just waiting until they returned. Already dodged a bullet, as Guy before me was a no-show. The mid-box lid is tucked up inside. Going to flip the bottom roller, so maybe $20 into the mid by the end.IMG_20181229_140559_01.jpeg

That 3/4" sliding-T.. May be a silly question, but how are they used exactly? I'm just wondering about how tight a fastener driven by a 3/4"dr would have to be, as big as they are, and the strength required to bring it to that level of tightness.

I have a 1/4" and a 3/8" sliding-T. I'd like to have a 1/2" and a 3/4" to complete the collection. :D

Probably used most often to help break things loose. I've seen them bent more often than not, meaning that someone has used a length of pipe on them for extra torque.

For tightening things, I would imagine it would be good enough for the German torque spec... 'Gütentight'. :badteeth:

First time posting in this thread but have enjoyed reading through it a lot.

The below is from this weekend. Was only my fourth time trying estate or yard sales but hope to go to many more moving forward. The past sales I have only gotten Craftsman USA hand tools so all of the items below were new to me (other than the nuts/bolts). I wasn’t positive what I may be overpaying for or getting a deal on but some were hard to pass when I saw made in USA and recognized companies like Starrett, Wilton and Mitutoyo that I have seen around the forum. Will surely be posting questions in the tool polishing thread about a few of the items.

Ended up $122 for all.
- Baldor 1/2hp (Cat. No. L4308) was $17.50
- Small Mitutoyo (513-103 Jeweled) was $4 and larger (2803-10 6 Jewel) was $18.
- Wilton 406 c-clamps were $12.50 ea (one is marked made in USA and other is not, however they otherwise look identical. Found that odd).
- Two Smaller clamps are “Cincinnati Tool No. 53 Super Jr.” and were $5 for the pair.
- The Starrett pieces were $25.50 for all three (two have owner marks) and only the depth gauge has a number on it: 236.
- Files were $8 for the five of them (two are Heller, other three Nicholson and the handle is a “Lutz Tool and File”).
- The 1” cutter on left in photo with Decimal equivalent cards was $3 and is marked “Republic-Fette, HSS, West Germany”. The rest in that photo set me back $11.
- All the bolts are grade 5 and have a “JH” on the heads (company initials?). That lot of hardware was $5.

I have other close up photos if anyone wants one.

Picked up a snappy today, KRA-53. Made in 80' pretty good shape, no dents at all and the only rust is on the surface rust on the lid. The first pic is right after i bought it and the second pic is now. 20 minutes with a heat gun and wd40 and decals no more. I overpaid a bit at $40 but i like these boxes a lot. 060c8055eb46b5856a8d1113481b2683.jpga052087f8f25872cb05f40687d44a10e.jpg
