Not much going on today, but I still needed to get out due to the survival of my marriage (every Sat. morning I give her time to herself.) So I wandered here and there, going to restores and junk shops and pawn shops. I spent about 12 bucks and got the following:

Jorgensen and Bessy clamps, Proto and P&C sockets, a Jacobs chuck key, Proto pliers, Vise-Grips, a Plomb driver and a piece of all thread for a project I have. Topped it off with a nice beer.

I thought I was done for the year and found these today. A bench block in nice shape, a drill index with numbers, letters and fractional sizes. There were a few bits included and the ones I have looked at are USA made. Last item is what I call a pin tool for releasing pins and barrels on a automotive type connector. All in for $21.00
Edit--Also scored a stool for the work bench for free earlier in the week.

That 3/4" sliding-T.. May be a silly question, but how are they used exactly? I'm just wondering about how tight a fastener driven by a 3/4"dr would have to be, as big as they are, and the strength required to bring it to that level of tightness.

I have a 1/4" and a 3/8" sliding-T. I'd like to have a 1/2" and a 3/4" to complete the collection. :D

Gj!

In my experience, 3/4" drive T-bars are useful for the range of 5/8" to 1" threaded fasteners. They can be used for a little larger sizes if high torque isn't necessary. If you use a cheater pipe, you can step up a size or two.

As to bending a T-handle, it is harder than you would think. I removed some lug nuts on a road grader last year that had been hammered on with a 3/4" impact wrench. I was putting 200 lbs. on a 6-foot pipe and they came loose only after bouncing up and down on the very end of the pipe. I was using a unbranded USA T-bar and it came out unscathed!

I hit a tool oriented garage sale this morning but I arrived late and people were carrying heavy boxes out as I walked up. I found a few things including an early Alloy Trimo 14” pipe wrench. I bought the box of bits just to get the box. Since I hadn’t found much, I hit the Concord flea. I found a long C Craftsman BE 1/2” drive set and an S-K 3/8” drive set, both in rough condition. I found a few more pieces including a Bonney metric combo. I had an S-K box in better condition so I moved the set into it.

Wrenchguy's stand legs and grinder are in the 1948 Craftsman Power Tool catalog. Also included a picture of the saw with the same legs.

I believe that grinder is fairly rare! It had a fairly short production range and the quench tray was plastic so most are either broken or melted by now [emoji23]

Stumbled upon an Autojumble this morning whilst out on a Sunday morning hoon.

Picked up:
+ Copper slip sachets, (10 for £0.50)
+ Pair of small wire brushes, (2 for £1)
+ Chuck keys (2 for £1)
+ Whetstone set (£1)

+ Record adjustable bolt cutters >3/16th diameter.
More like heavy wire cutters but nice size for toolbox.
Managed to free off most of the adjustment nuts with a little oil. (£6)

+ Small Block Plane still in its original box!
Not sure of manufacturer but German and marked "S&T" on body.
Anyone seen similar? (£12)

That really is the last sale of 2018!

Last week end of the year.
Couldn't pass on the little parts cabinet. A bit worn but it came home with me.
A couple of vintage pieces, wood plumb bob, Dandee Reel string line, a Revelation tobacco tin and a tin of lock washers. And a 6 inch USA ruler.

Way to start of strong in the forum! That Baldor motor was a bargain. And I personally have a particular love of almost anything Starrett!

Thanks. The motor runs very smooth. Unsure what it was originally used for but since it was already wired up and had a mounting plate I couldn’t leave it for that price.

Nice parts cabinet! Is it marked? I picked up a similar one in October. I passed on some steel parts bins from the same seller and am kicking myself now.

Ok I lied. This should be my last post for 2018. Picked up my new to me Clark C25P Forklift today. It is propane powered and can lift 2500 LBS. Just need to get a tank for it and it will be ready to lift! Paid $400 for it.

Auction 129-4.JPGStarted sorting the box of wrenches I posted earlier. Left side are 2 VLCHEK a WC 30 and WC 28. Top are some USA CMAN SAE and below that almost a full set of CMAN Metric, also USA.

Auction 1229-5.JPG The three wrenches are Proto 412, Proto 3018 and a P&C 100 #2810. Sockets in the box are CMAN USA metric 10 and 12.
Still have some others to look through.

A nice clean running Baldor motor for $15?! I wouldn't leave it either. In fact, I'd take them all day long at that price! That was a nice haul overall too!

Marked by rust on the top ! I have a couple but none with that type of drawer pull.

FINALLY got around to cleaning those tool boards I bought weeks ago. I didn't want to show them until I washed the fine dirt and silt off of them. I went to an estate sale outside of the city and came across these sitting on a shelf that looked like they hadn't moved since they were put there in the 80's. The whole sale was a hybrid farm/ranch style with a LOT of old mining equipment and farming equipment.

It was near the end of the day and the company was more than likely going to toss them in the dumpster along with everything else in the barn that was considered "junk" and I felt that I couldn't just leave them there to become worm food.

I feel these ones are in pretty decent shape...

Bobcat: You ****!

Loading up the truck at my parents' place in Virginia before heading home tomorrow for Massachusetts. My Dad bought the vintage GE double oven about five years ago on a Craigslist ad I found for him. I intended to make it a powder coat oven, but he never got around to hooking it up. Now that Parkinsons pretty much keeps him out of his shop, he let me take it home to finish the conversion. He also threw in a neat little table saw made by the American Machine & Tool Co out of Royersford, PA and pair of Werner ladder jacks.d68827fca87357729efdcc3df2df17b8.jpg58136f5ca3c04638f402e1587371729a.jpg

Nice boards and some good common ones. I have a proto board but it is kind of boring having hacksaws and garage bars. Isn't as exciting as wrenches or sockets.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3061, 3070,

2018 HOST’S RECAP (PART 1 of 4)

It’s that time of year to take stock of the year behind us, in our jobs, our life, and our first priority. :)

Before too long we’ll all be langing the auld synes with family and friends, and BlueBomber will have the 2019 thread up and running to great fanfare and excitement, and I wanted to give the 2018 thread one more send-off before then. Something to read later with a dark beer, a mulled wine, a spiked egg nog, or some champagne.

STATISTICS

I don’t want to overstate statistics, because I’ve always been a quality over quantity guy, but it was a BIG year. BlueBomber pointed out the rapid pace and page total early on, and as of this writing, it looks like we’re going to finish with at least 435 pages. We had 40 guys with more than 50 posts, 14 guys with more than 100 posts, and 7 guys with over 200 posts.

THEMES

In terms of themes, I suppose it’s inevitable that the 2018 Garage Sale Thread will be forever remembered as the Year of the Jerry Can. By now everyone knows the inside joke about the Great Gauge Debate, and all the funny echoes, and then the jerry can mini-bar and jerry can toolboxes, but I wonder how many guys realize that Outlaw actually found a jerry can sipping flask well before all that!

attachment.php

As venerable of a scrounger’s item as it is, it really would be a shame if the jerry can was the only thing this year was remembered for, because it really was a banner year in many respects.

It was also the Year of the Drill Press, for example. I counted at least 20!! Including several vintage Craftsman (littleponderosa, jdbilodeau, hemifalcon, mattblast – x2, IdahoMan, BFBOB, and autoidodyssey), a few Deltas (MercLSU – x3!, txlonghhorn1989Bobcat753 and Mr_P), and others, notably (Orbit x 2 – LandofRath, Atlas – fordkid88, and Central Machinery – LeVaughn).

It was also the Year of The Workmate. Besides Outlaw’s rare 1st edition, there were several others found, a few by txlonghorn1989 alone.

It could also be known as the Year of the Firearm. Boys will be boys, and we really brought home some nice guns this year. I don’t remember a year with so many. But instead of touching on the exploding gunpowder variety, I am going to delve into the compressed air variety.

If you missed all the BB guns and accoutrement, here is a brief summary…

It figures that our 2018 Picker of the Year Runner-Up would be in on the action! In April, Outlaw found three tubs of vintage Daisy BB's and a bunch of targets with parts ordering info on the back! Linked here. In August, he found a Daisy BB gun cleaning kit, mostly there, missing just the oil and a touch-up bottle, linked here and show here…

attachment.php

In a classic example of that good old Mysterious Garage Sale Thread Synchronicity, Stuart in MN found a little vial of Daisy BB gun oil, linked here, a month later.

attachment.php

It is most likely the vial Outlaw needs to complete the kit he found just a month earlier! (Maybe they can work out a deal!)

One of our award runner-ups and a POY finalists also got in on the action in a big way! In May Tex found a Red Ryder BB gun, linked here, and in December, just in time for A Christmas Story (“You’ll shoot your eye out, Ralph!”), Tex found his second and third Red Ryder BB guns of the year, linked here. All three are shown here:

attachment.php

attachment.php

Junktastic started this year's trend way back in January with a Ben Franklin pellet pistol, linked here, and later that same month, Bartels_metal_works found an old metal receiver Daisy 880 BB\Pellet gun, linked here.

I will end this little All Things BB Gun related celebration with this photo of the Daisy plant itself, in Rogers, Arkansas, provided to us by EOC_Jason…

Another sneaky big category for the thread, collectively, as a thread, was anvils! While Outlaw’s old Peter Wright stole the show early, there were a fair share of nice ones, including a couple of other Peter Wright’s.

Seemingly without much fanfare, Jaydb07 took home a 225-lb John Brooks, linked here, a 104-lb Trenton, linked here, and that other Peter Wright, though not as old as Outlaw’s, here. Jay did not post much, but he is a legit anvilhunter, and I just gotta show those trophies...

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

Waltrip88 also snagged a nice later Peter Wright, linked here.

Other large anvils included Mattblast’s 100-pounder, linked here, Bagged89s10’s 160-lb American Wrought, linked here, LandofRath’s 40-lb Fisher, linked here, and Hemifalcon’s small cast anvil, linked here.

Plenty of jeweler’s vises, too, with 454ragtop’s here, Tex’s INDIA model, here, and Frecklefarm’s 4-in-one haul barn raid, here.

Probably the coolest one I’ve ever seen was this one with a base cast under it, from JimFZR, linked here, and shown here:

attachment.php

As always, there were some decent RR track anvils, too, including one found by 18AWRENCH, here, and 454ragtop’s here. Here is one that stood out, and up, literally, on a wheel-base stand, found by Emeraldcoupe, and an interesting commercial model, called a Handi-Vil, found by Trijeff here.

Those last two deserve photos…

An OOPS! before the finale

I have a lot of pride as a picker, but we all make ‘rookie mistakes’ from time to time, and we all have our foibles and oopses and misses and our classic F&*# Up stories, to keep us humble as I like to say, and I have shared a few of mine.

One of my ‘Not So Great’ moments this year came back to haunt me when I was going through the thread to prepare this recap. Sometimes this thread demonstrates some amazing synchronicity. We go on "runs" as Outlaw used to say. Trends that defy logic. Or we find complementary or supplementary pieces for each other, separated by thousands of miles, without even knowing it. And sometimes the mysterious "system" fails.

In early September, LesserSon spotted a Sears & Roebuck HappiTime Toy Tools cabinet. He didn’t buy it, but provided these photos.

attachment.php

attachment.php

A week later, HeelSpur bought a Happitime Toy Tools cabinet, linked here. It’s awesome, and it had quite a few tools inside it.

attachment.php

Note, however, that it is missing a pair of pliers!

Scroll up and note from the tool layout included in LS's photo where the pliers hang. Note that this empty spot will be an empty spot on my soul until I can find a pair to send to HeelSpur.

If you were paying attention, you know why!

If not, you may not recall that your illustrious ******* host spotted a pair of Happi-Time pliers at a flea market in November, took a photo because of the interesting, funny name, and left them behind because he already has too many one-off slip-joint pliers with interesting names!

attachment.php

Not only did my instincts let me down – I completely missed not one but two posts with Happi-Time cabinets in them just a month before that day! In my defense, I will mention that I found the hanging Craftsman wall cabinet a day before HeelSpur found his HappiTime cabinet, so I was a little preoccupied. But no excuses.

My New Years Resolution for the 2019 Garage Sale Thread is to turn pliers over until I find another pair for HeelSpur! :)

2018 HOST’S RECAP (PART 4 of 4)

I'm going to end this recap with some of my Personal Favorites. My prerogative as host. These didn't make it to any of my final AWARDS lists, obviously, but they all resonated with me for one reason or another.

For its elevated sense of synchronicity (a wind-up VW Beetle that matches the VW Beetle he drives!) and its creative presentation, this find from member 15til3, linked here, may be my overall favorite of the year.

Nothing speaks to the continuity of this thread and the persistence of its pickers better than stories like LesserSon’s, who found an OD green WWI sheath this year for a WWI pick-mattocks missing its sheath that he found last year! In my opinion, that is what picking is all about.

Another exceptional instance came from Unaiu. His Proto handles score, linked here, wasn’t too shabby either, but his junkyard score - where he traded 21 lbs of saved-up aluminum cans for 30 lbs of tools + $10 in cash!) – linked here, was the epitome of Garage Sale thread thriftiness. Not just a bargain. Not just free. They quite literally PAID HIM to take this bucket of tools away!

Other memorable posts for me included JMLangford guitar electronics, linked here, Rickster’s slot cars, linked here, LesserSon’s Utica cabinet, which he is restoring and filling up with tools, linked here, 3bay Fairmount DOE wrench set, linked here, and Jorgensen grinding gizmo, linked here, Ed (Orc’s) haul at the Great Oregon Steam Up! Swap Meet, which included a wooden machinists’ chest and a Plomb top box, linked here, and last but not least, D42jeep’s compete 1939 Plomb 3/8 Challenger set, linked here.

As you guys know I sprinkled the thread with some impromptu quizzes and guessing games this year. I want to give a special shout out to Cruzan80 for winning this one linked here, back in July!

I'm going to end with this.

It's one of Duddly's display cases. It's my understanding he started keeping his tools and stuff in the china cabinet until Mrs. Duddly bought him one for his tools, and he is on to a few of his own "china" cabinets now.

You guys know I love the Lugzsonian, but it's dark and most of my treasures are tucked away in drawers. This cabinet has given me some inspiration. I am going to be on the lookout for some antique dining room furniture in 2019. And possibly for some museum-quality lighting. I have just the corner for a nice well-lit cabinet.

Glad you posted the display cabinet. My wife knows I like to keep a few tools out to look at. I finally pulled the levels I have been accumulating just to do this background above my bookcases. Finished it last week. There is a Gerstner chest/case in there for my smalls.

All of these were garage sales items... !!

As the year winds down, I want to do a shout out to our host who certainly lives up to the credo under this image of his avatar. He has made this thread interesting and informative all year long. Thanks, Lugz!

Lugz, you've set a high bar for future hosts! Great job this year! I never would have been able to keep track of it all.

Happy (almost) New Year guys!
