Am I sitting on a gold mine, or is it just fool's gold?
Going through more of my 4-toolbox day, I was getting ready to toss this pair of clearly knockoff, mistreated, beat up locking pliers in the scrap steel bin, when the stampings on the locking handle caught my eye. The patent is the original 1924 Peterson patent and the DeWitt mark WITHOUT the grasping hands logo means it's early - but how early?
https://livinghistoryfarm.org/farminginthe40s/machines_12.html
The website cited above is very interesting, but doesn't answer the question of the date of my 7" Vise-Grips.
Another reference pointed to some dreamer who was trying to get $450 on fleaBay for Vise-Grips that sounded like mine! Sadly that was 3 years ago and the pictures were gone; only the description remained.
All I've found out for pretty-sure so far is they are between 1924 and 1957, when the "Easy-Release" lever was added. Note the odd shape of the locking handle- with a sharp bend where the adjusting lever joins it. Also something I haven't seen before. And another hint, the hex head on the adjusting screw. All the others I've seen are knurled.
Any help much appreciated!!
thanks to oldtuleguy for pointing out a 1942 patent. gotta look it up.

Estate sale this morning. Got there plenty early and still was #7. Just before they opened the doors they were handing out numbers in the 70's! Most guys headed to the house so I had a head start on the garage and managed to pull this lot out. Some Snap-on sockets, 1/4dr ratchet, Plomb 1/2dr ratchet and a odd Wright bent handle 3/8dr ratchet. Also a really long 9/16 Blue-Point and ONE Snap-on nut driver. I scoured the garage three times trying to find any more Snappy nut drivers or sockets...

Hit that local estate one last time this afternoon before they closed. Got the vise grips super cheap. I'd been looking at a couple of small cabinets they had since day 1. They had them way overpriced IMO but with a hour to go before closing they accepted my offer which was about an 85% discount on a 50% discount day. The top cabinet set of drawers is a Weis and the bottom is made by Art Steel Co Inc, New York, NY.. They're both good but I think I like the Weis a bit better.

Not 100% on this but I have seem some similar. I know they did run a hex adjustment for a while. Early last year I did find an orginal Pat pending vise grip from early 20s. I know that series ran a hex adjustment but it had a hole drilled through the hex.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3061, 3070,

Finally got around to visiting our local Restore today and combined the trip with a stop at an indoor flea market I had never been to.

At the Restore I found a 16" Craftsman Adjustable, Craftsman utility knife and the Yankee push drill. Across town at the flea market I scored a Craftsman crowbar, SK and Stanley screwdrivers, Craftsman DOE (long C) and DBE. A Barcalo wrench and a Billings rounded out the 'big' items.

I also found some tiny tools- a 1/4" drive Oxwall socket set, small Craftsman combination and some teeny tiny Herband ingition pliers. Staying small there was a Plomb DBE and a forged usa DOE with no maker. And mixed in with the Oxwall sockets were some little 1/4" drive Penens sockets plus one Craftsman.

Small haul of smalls, but still better than nothing!

Nice finds, folks! No sales around me worth traveling for, so I'm trying to meet up with a few Facebook Marketplace sellers (been like pulling teeth).

Loving the finds guys.
I'm hoping to get across to the USA this year with work and that may include a "strategic" weekend layover.... Bring on the plomb and craftsman.

In the mean time no sales today in Yorkshire so spent the day car shopping.. Frustrating.

But cleaned up some of my haul from last weekend and tried "bluing" for the first time. Rather like the results so far..

It's been a weird weekend for Estate sales around here. Started on Thursday with what was called a big digger sale. The ad listed a shop in back, along with needing gloves and flashlights. Sounds good. And it would have been if I liked broken pottery and stuffed animals! After digging through the mess, I did manage to find a few things and when they looked at my bag, told me it was free.

A handful of unused shop towels, two 24" innertubes (will work on my three wheeler) emery cloth roll and a book of workbench plans.

Next stop was one of the most idiotically run estate sales I have been to in a long time. If you are going to have a line with special instructions, have someone running that line! They kept freaking out that people were not reading the instructions to line up around the corner... Anyway, I picked up some shooting supplies there, .22 cleaning kit and patches along with an older wood shotgun rod. Also a nice vintage fishing gaff hook. I forgot to take a picture of it.

Friday comes and a really good looking sale with a lot of tools and good metal cabinets, so I was ready with cash. But as I get there they tell me the tools won't be for sale until next week. I just turned around and walked off. I know that many estate sales companies are run by flakes, but sometimes I just don't get the logic or lack thereof. Anyway, the last sale I went to was just new stuff and nothing interesting in the garage. But I was in the area due to one other sale, which paid off. No great bargains, but some decent stuff. The guy was a former phone tech like myself, so I still have a lot of the stuff hanging around, but picked up a few goodies.

P&C plumbing wrench and DBE, Proto sockets and feeler gauge, SK ratchet, lathe bits and a sheath for telephone snips and skinning knife (I have spares of these so I can use it) Also picked this up at that stop

Simpson analog loop tester. At ATT we called them kick testers, and used a digital version. Basically, it is an ohmmeter that sends a charge a phone line to test if there is a break in the connection. You can tell the distance from the ohms it leaks down from.

Last stop was close to me, and I picked up the following for a couple of bucks.

a cheap ignition set that I wanted for the roll, and a screwdriver that takes yankee bits but doesn't ratchet. The only markings are made in USA and pat. pend.

Today someone is supposed to call me about the truck I have for sale, so staying close to home.

So the rain is NOT co-operating... I just brought in the tents; I wanted to set them up...

Couple of other interesting things in the canvas pile to as you will see.

First up is the Boy scout tent. all I have is the bag label and a shot from the interwebs of someone else's setup. its a single pole design, but is tall enough to stand in, sort of, (I could but I'n not 6 ft plus..) Supposedly two adults could sleep in this.

The label of mine: one pole near the front, a line out front, and other line out back, no floor, so a ground cover is needed (But you need those anyway, so...)

And pics off the web setup:

then the shelter halves with the odd folding poles:

The loose piece of canvas had this on it:

Which made me realize its a stretcher!

and the last canvas pies was a Duffle bag, which I didn't lok at til I got it in the house. WELL marked!

Today's haul from only one estate sale. Nintendo system, super Mario with dunt hunt, super Mario without duck hunt, and Hogan alley game. Husky made in USA metric 3/8" drive sockets but missing 11mm and 13mm from a set of 10mm to 19mm, two double box end snap-on wrenches, and assortment of sawzall blades. $40

After the sale, I went to a junkyard but didn't find anything.

I picked up a partially complete Husky 3/8 drive socket at an Estate Sale yesterday. It's missing the 7/16" shallow socket and several of the deep sockets.

I have a Bonney 7/16" shallow that will fill the void until I find a replacement.

Cheers

Jim

Husky (Imer USA?) cement mixer. $10. Missing one of the two internal mixing blades. Replacement is $38 from Imer, maybe easier to fabricate.

I picked these items up at an Estate Sale today. I got the cabinets for $2 a piece. I got everything in the second picture for $1(a 1/4 inch Craftsman BE Breaker Bar & Swedish Wire Cutters) Everything in the third picture (Fairchild #2 Rotary tool & German Coping Saw) I got for $5.

Levaughn : Two bucks each for those cabinets earns you a "You ****" !

Well this AM was a surprise; it rained off an on all night; was still sprinkling off an on this AM but the Cul-de-sac that posted an 8 family "block" sale last night came through! EVERYONE had one or more popup canopies, going, adn were enthusiastic despise the weather!

Only two Items, but both made me smile!

Last item first, a July of 1947 Coleman 242c single mantle lantern!

Needs the obligatory pump leather and cap gasket, but it has the ORIGINAL globe! Green Coleman and Pyrex on opposite sides. (finding intact glass is rare, even rarer after 72 years of camping use!

The top vents are also usually beat to hell - ONE small chip on top and at the edge of the vent, and its either wear or some flat black paint on the edges? :dunno: I'm no rust so I'm going to attack it with SG first and see if that removes it. if not it's wear and possibly from a brim extension shade? again, :dunno: Finding one of THOSE would be a red letter day! Oh yes, the lantern cost me $5!

I found this at the first house - Looks REAL promising doesn't it? :wtf:

attachment.php

Opened it and saw 3 SK sockets and that was more promising, and lifted the tray and saw this:

attachment.php

I see Bonny, and an Indestro ratchet, and what looks like MAC sockets? Can't be! But they were!

I cherry pick it out and the guy tells me he's selling the whole box, and asked me to make an offer (I hate making the initial offer...) "How about ten bucks?"

"Oh No! I was thinking five!"

"I'm good with that!" I hand him a 20, reload the box and he hands me $15 change! :bounce:

Inventoried:

The MAC Socket set is 3/8 drive SAE impact shorties, The Bonney 6 pc set is complete with a Mac, an SK a Lectroite, A no name that resembles Duro/Indestro but not the right markings in the Bonny bag, Pliers are Williams, Indestro ratchet adn extension, Thorsen swivel, Blakhawk driver on the right, Bridgeport adn ParX on the left, Greatnech stubby and adjsutable...

attachment.php

The closest thing to being junk is the wire crimper/strippers the folding razor blade, (looks unused).and the box itself...

All for a fiver! :pimpflash:rocker:

A VERY good (rainy) day!

Outlaw: I'm finding those crappy plastic boxes to be overlooked goldmines sometimes. I dig through every one I see. Love that Bonney set.

Just checked my stash, I only have a 1/2" husky made in USA. I had the 7/16" socket in my hand but I put it down since I was digging for all of the husky metric sockets. Sorry!
