While taking a break from tearing out a patio deck that was rotting away ,I was able to meet up with a FB marketplace seller and picked up this 1943 Gerstner toolbox. It's missing the top rail of the door,and the finger pull. It's still in pretty good shape. I may just scrub it up with Murphy's and polish the hardware a bit before delving deeper.

That's a real nice Gerstner box.

The top rail would be real easy to make and the pull is still available from Gerstner.

After you clean it up try some brown Briwax.

Afternoon All!
My weekend started pretty quietly having only got home around 2am Saturday.
Once up and moving I did some chores and went to the local recycling centre to drop off some junk, checked out the charity shop attached but spotted nothing inside....

...as I drove off I spotted something freshly delivered to the "donations bay"....
.....causing an immediate and highly dubious U-Turn

Asked the lady doing the sorting and she happily gave me prices! (saving her lugging,cataloging and pricing them later)

There were also some interesting pieces between the usual nut&screws, including these weird LEAD topped square tacks which have "BT" (British Telecom) embossed on one side and a patent number on the other......I assume some form of old "P-clip" for telephone wires? But never seen them before.



After recovering from too many pints this morning and whilst watching the Monaco Grand Prix I spotted an add on Gumtree, 500m down the road....staggering distance

Brand New garden spade and fork for £10, still with tags on. Not the best quality, ASDA (UK Walmart) own brand, but perfect for my wee garden.

No sales for me, but SWMBO and I did pick up another free trampoline (our third) two miles down the road from us. I now have plenty of material for building a large firewood rack with all the curved metal pieces, and SWMBO plans to try out the tramp fabric as a weed barrier.

I went to about 6 sales on Saturday and only had one sale that I picked anything up at. I walked into a little estate sale. As I walked into the garage, I started at the workbench. The man running the sale told me to take anything I wanted in the garage. It was almost all free. I grabbed a set of Wiss tin snips, a Champion Brass oil drum wrench, Greenfield tap handle, Proto snap ring pliers, K-D snap ring pliers, and a MAC brake bleeder wrench. I asked about the Wilton vice and the guy told me I could have it for a couple bucks. I worked on getting it removed using two pipe wrenches that were there. I struggled for a few minutes before remembering that I had a toolkit in my car. I got it off and offered the guy $4. He countered with $2. Can't complain with that!

I wasn't planning on going to any sales today, but I saw a listing on Facebook Marketplace for some free tools. Apparently I was the first one that responded. I sped down there really quick. When I got to the neighborhood I realized it was the same place I bought the Armstrong set and MAC ratchet a couple weeks ago. The listing had two totes, and he told me to bring my own boxes. I was shocked to find he had a lot more than the listing showed. He told me to take everything. I spent about a half hour walking back and forth filling boxes and emptying them into the trunk of my car. The trunk was packed completely full and I had a couple boxes in the back seat. Here's a quick overview. I'm still unloading and sorting through everything. Not bad for free. Total spent this week is $2!

Nice get, HeelSpur. I ran into a Giles patent a few weeks ago, but the guy wouldn't come down from $35. They were very popular in the early oil industry in northwestern PA and upstate NY.

If your ever in northwestern PA make a stop down in Titusville to see Drake's well. Edwin Drake was a distant relative of mine on my mothers side. He was the first to successfully drill for oil. The well still pumps small amounts of oil. If your into things like that. It's really interesting. Spent many summers down there as a kid at my grandmother's.

$5 Heuer vise. Saw an old looking vice, didn't know the brand but when he said $5 and I could make out 'germany' on it, I figured it was worth it. Plus it is a neat design of which style I didn't have yet. Don't know if I'll ever use it, but for $5 I can't complain.

Also picked up 2 large older Craftsman ball peen hammers over the last 2 weeks, one for 50 cents and one for $1

Yes, that's an antique shop. 1942. A bargain at $75. Spotted when I picked up that forest green Hamilton FSN GMTK box last week.

I think that is a bit high for a ships wheel wine rack, but that is just me.

Found a Pioneer Silver Era (1978) SX-780 stereo receiver yesterday, for $15. Works fine, but a bit noisy in the volume control, just in need of a forty year cleanup. Was going to use it as a garage radio, but maybe not. Sounds great and looks almost as good as the one pictured. It will fit in with my G/S SX 650 and SX 750 that I bought new.

Also bought a couple of vises at a church sale $10 Ea. I don't bargain at church sales.

Fully agree lilredex there is no haggling/bargianing at a charity event/store, if its a fair price thats what I pay.
I don't like seeing people trying to strong arm a volunteer to lower a price and have butted in a few times to say so. (Much against my English manners)

Suckage for youinreverse and double suckage for Provincial! Three big hauls for cheap money!

I picked another Craftsman radial arm saw (my ninth, I think), a Crowntop 8-incher. I responded to a Facebook Marketplace ad priced at $50, but after we got it loaded up, the guy told me I could have it for free! That's an easy hundred bucks for less than a gallon of gas.

It was a lovely Memorial Day at Jake’s flea. A couple good purchases...1-1/8” Barcalloy combo, Bonney 1/2dr hingehandle...a couple fumbles. When I got home and derusted the two small combos and 90° obstruction wrench, I realized I already had identical ones. I already had the Craftsman offset screwdriver. Probably the punch, too, if I look.
In hindsight, should have left them and bought a pair of well-made slipjoints with both a “Bergman o’ Buffalo” on the cheek and a forged-in “B” in a field of diamonds on the grips. Really attractive.
Der Klein Schraubenzieher says “Made in USA” on t’other side.
The fumbles deflated my wallet just enough, I was too cash-depleted to buy the Crowntop preblock with both original eye-shields and tool-rests for $35. (To tell the truth, I am not a fan of the chocolate and butterscotch color scheme, but the weight of it compared to the aluminum blocks is impressive. But I had sufficient for the Crowntop stapler at $1! Now to find some staples to fit it, LOL.

Saturday afternoon after the other sales I went back to the Estate sale where I got the Craftsman RHFT flex ratchet on Friday. I had seen a bunch of Fairmount tools there and thought I would try to negotiate a package deal.

Everything was priced half off, so I nosed around a little. Out back there was a Rears Nifty 50-gallon spray rig that mounts on a Category 1 tractor three-point hitch with a PTO-driven pump and booms. It was priced at $175.00. I put a bunch tools in a bucket and settled the whole works for $100.00.

On Saturday and Sunday, I wandered down to the other end of the state, stopping at interesting sales and a small flea. I picked up a few things and spent time in another part of the state. Here are my findings:

Stanley rabbiting plane, P&C wrench and socket, Edelmann compact flaring tool, Weaver K1 scope, and a complete set of Lectrolite DBE's in the holder. I also found this at the most backwood "sale" I ever went to. Paid up and got out as soon as I could.

Tin boiler and steam engine. I paid $10 and it needs a stack and a sight glass. And a good clean up, but I am certified on low-pressure boilers! In any case, I pretty happy digging up this little project.

Spent the holiday weekend with my parents in western Nebraska, about 250 miles from home.
Dad and I went to an auction on Saturday, a fair amount of tools and fairly nice stuff. Overall prices were pretty reasonable.
Among my scores were the following:
Total of 5 DeWitt Vise Grips along with some needle noses, a pair of Channellock 420, and a pair of CeeTee slip joints in a leather holster. I paid $30 total for these various lots.
Set of 13 assorted CMan screwdrivers plus a CMan nut driver handle, and 11 other assorted screwdrivers for $5.
Klein ratcheting cable cutter. Thought it was interesting, and looked it up online and decided it was worth buying. Got it for $5.
B&D folding step stool $1
Dad then scored a CMan 113-29943 10” table saw for $85. It was in great condition, and included a miter gauge, leg base with wheels and dust collection ports.
Near the saw, I saw a Hitachi 18V cordless drill sitting by itself. I have a large amount of the Hitachi 18V stuff, so I was interested in scoring another battery and a backup drill, hopefully cheap since there wasn’t a charger. I bid $10 and didn’t get any competition. The auctioneer then remembered that the charger and a second battery were plugged in over at the edge of the building. They were retrieved and bidding continued. I ended up getting the bid for $20. I was really happy to get 2 more batteries fo $20 and the drill and charger were a bonus. However, when I got it home and looked closer, I realized that it was actually a hammer drill, which I didn’t have. So much the better!

During the auction, my Mom texted that she had seen a FB post that a local lumber yard was having a garage sale to clear out excess merchandise. This garage sale ended at 3 PM. The auctioneers finished with tools between 2-2:30, so Dad and I headed to the garage sale to see if anything was left. They had a row of plastic totes filled with plumbing, electrical and tools. Signs on the totes did say “$X ea for items in this tub.” But, by this time, they had crossed that out and replaced it with “Buy the whole tub for $X”. I found a tub with 12 replacement hammer/ax handles, 3 scoring blade cutters, and a Fuller 11/16 wrench for $5.
Dad scored two boxes of wood veneer facing for $1 ea.

Overall, a good day!

Sorry, yes, I was poking fun at antique store prices. In general I have never paid more than $20 for a WWII jerry can at a flea market or estate sale. They may sell for more than that at a military vehicle rallies, usually to guys who don't live near flea markets. There are cans with two-tab caps (1941) or cans in exceptional condition with period stenciling or a certain maker that may demand a little more, as high as $50-ish range. But yes, $75 is high.

I think that is a bit high for a ships wheel wine rack, but that is just me.

Just hit a yard sale on my lunch break. Picked up a red Kennedy KK-19 tool box and a Wizard 1/2" ratchet for $5. The box should clean up fairly well.
